Sports: Given Feared For Ireland Future

GIVEN FEARED FOR IRELAND FUTURE

Setanta Sports Ireland

Oct 3 2011

New Villa manager Alex McLeish signed the Ireland international from
City in a £3.5million deal in July, on a five-year deal that will
see him up to his 40th birthday.

The Donegal man left Eastlands after losing his place in the City
first-team to England goalkeeper Joe Hart, and acknowledged that he
was unsure whether his lack of match-time would count against him at
international level.

When asked by Setanta Sports whether he could have lost his Ireland
place in the 2010 season, where he played just three Europa League
and one Carling Cup game for his club, he replied; “Easily. And I
could still lose my place this season even if playing regularly. It
is all about staying on top of your game. Last year, I was ring-rusty,
not playing every week in the Premier League.

“This year I have benefited playing more regularly. Going into Ireland
games, I feel sharper and more prepared than I did last year.”

Given is delighted that Ireland have a real chance to qualify for
Euro 2012, after Armenia’s shock 4-0 win in Slovakia set up a four-way
shoot out for the outright qualification and play-off place in Group B.

“Slovakia have to win their game at home to Russia to stay in the
qualification campaign. If that were the case, and we won our two
games (against Andorra on October 7 and Armenia on October 11),
we would qualify top of the group,” he explained.

“But that is easily said. Anything can happen, because Russia are a top
team who could go to Slovakia and win. Then it will be a shootout for
second place, with Armenia coming hard behind us as well by picking
up results in the last few games.

Keith Fahey’s late goal in Yerevan in September of last year gave
Ireland a narrow 1-0 win in the away game, and Given believes Armenia’s
results since then proved that their performance that night was not
a fluke.

“Armenia is a tough game,” he acknowledged.

“We have to concentrate on Andorra away first, but, depending on what
happens in the Slovakia-Russia game, it could be a massive game for
both countries.

The Armenia manager named his squad for the upcoming EURO 2012
qualifiers against Macedonia and Ireland.

These are two important games for Armenia as they attempt to finish in
the top 2 of the group. Their biggest challengers, Russia and Ireland,
each face Andorra once which likely means three points so Armenia
will need to beat Macedonia on 7 October to maintain the pressure
before their big showdown against Ireland on 11 October.

The biggest name on the Armenian squad is Henrik Mkhitaryan from
Ukrainian giants Shakhtar Donetsk. If anyone watched the Shakhtar
Donetsk vs. APOEL game in the Champions League, that game featured
Mkhitaryan going up against Macedonian Ivan Trickovski from APOEL.

They also have three players from Metalurh Donetsk, the same team
as Mario Gjurovski who was added to the Macedonian squad today as a
replacement due to injury problems.

Here is the Armenian squad:

Goalkeepers: Roman Berezovsky (Khimki, Russia), Gevorg Kasparov (Mika)

Defenders: Sargis Hovsepyan, Artur Yuspashyan, Artak Yedigaryan,
Varazdat Aroyan (all Pyunik), Robert Arzumanyan (Jagiellonia,

NKR MFA: “THE NKR CITIZENS ENJOYED THE RIGHT TO FREE CHOICE – THE INHERENT RIGHT OF ALL THE NATIONS IN THE WORLD”

Noyan Tapan
01.10.2011

Statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Nagorno Karabakh
Republic (NKR)

on the recent initiatives of Azerbaijan and reaction of Baku related
to the municipal elections in the NKR:

“The September 18, 2011 municipal elections in the Nagorno Karabakh
Republic were another successful demonstration of the democratic
process. The authorities formed via free voting, which was evaluated
as such by numerous international observers, are called to continue the
permanent process of increasing the Karabakh people’s self-organization
and consolidating the principles of an open and democratic society,
which is taking place in our Republic.

The NKR citizens enjoyed the right to free choice – the inherent
right of all the nations in the world. In this context, we consider
any criticism of the democratic processes in the NKR as groundless
and contradicting the modern tendencies of developing international
relations.

Besides, the NKR MFA considers it necessary to remind Azerbaijan that
its attempts to deprive the people of Nagorno Karabakh of the right
to democratic development and consolidation of a civil society are
doomed to failure, as well as expresses its concern about the lack
of similar processes in the neighboring Republic.

Also, the NKR Foreign Ministry appeals to the international community
for displaying a constructive and successive attitude towards all
the processes in the NKR, which contribute to the formation of an
open and democratic region of the South Caucasus.
