PanARMENIAN.Net – Armenian cellist Narek Hakhnazaryan will present
the next concert in the Emporia Arts Council series on October 18 in
the Granada Theatre, Kansas.

Hakhnazaryan received the first prize and gold medal at the 2011
International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, and was hailed as
“a seasoned phenom” in the Washington Post’s review of his Kennedy
Center debut.

“He produces a powerful and colorful sound in all registers, nails
every big shift and flashes all the virtuoso’s tricks with insolent
ease,” the Post review said. “He should have a stellar career.”

The 2011-2012 season will bring his first concerto appearance at
Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s
under the direction of Ryan McAdams, as part of the Young Concert
Artists Gala.

The season for Hakhnazaryan also includes performances with the London
Symphony and the Mariinsky Orchestra, a five-concert tour across Europe
with the Moscow Philharmonic; and other international orchestras in

Having summed up the results of the ninth International Theatrical
Festival High Fest, the organizers say the event provoked a great
interest among the youth.

“It’s very commendable that a ‘festival audience’ capable of telling
the difference between ordinary spectacles and festivals is coming to
light in Yerevan. ” HighFest President Artur Ghukasayan told reporters
on Saturday.

“Next to our permanent audience we saw this year new people who
attended almost all the spectacles; it is really gratifying,” he said.

The organizers note that the Armenian spectator was particularly
interested in Credo Theatre’s “Father is Always Right” and Billy
Cowie’s Tango de Soledad (Tango of Solitude).

As for the local producers’ works, they find Vahan Badalyan’s Seagull
and Mihr Theatre’s “Plays about Death” to be the most attractive
shows of HighFest 2011 .

Expert Concerned Over Internet Illiteracy In Armenia

EXPERT CONCERNED OVER INTERNET ILLITERACY IN ARMENIA

Tert.am

Internet illiteracy is a serious problem in Armenia, Samvel
Martirosyan, an information security expert has said.

At a news conference on Saturday, the expert spoke of safe and unsafe
connections to the virtual network, warning particularly against
the danger of WiFi internet access in cafes. He said such connection
often enables third person’s access to one’s computer data.

Martirosyan further spoke of the free information flow on the personal
pages of public figures. He noted in that connection that Yerevan
Mayor Karen Karapetyan’s Facebook profile is among the most visited
pages on the popular social networking site, with many people posting
there photos and messages to raise awareness of the urgent problems
in the capital city (dead animal or tree cutting).

The expert said information security should not place restrictions
on civil freedom, but it should protect officials from being pursued
in social networks.

“That’s a real problem around the world. The Azerbaijani intelligence
agents may use a beautiful lady’s photo to draw out important
information from a vulnerable Armenian official,” he added.

Martirosyan said false profiles do not normally have a long life as it
is possible to identify them by searching the persons named on Google.

168 ZHAM: LEVON TER-PETROSYAN AND GAGIK TSARUKYAN HELD MEETING

Tert.am

The paper claims it has learned that leader of the opposition alliance
Armenian National (HAK) Congress Levon Ter-Petrosyan and leader of
the Prosperous Armenia party have held a meeting.

The paper reminds that during his October 1 speech Levon Ter-Petrosyan
said that the HAK should consider relations with the Prosperous
Armenia party rather than the Republican Party of Armenia, calling
it as not a political party but rather a “group of opportunists”.

Levon Ter-Petrosyan also said that the Prosperous Armenia party was
formed naturally, based on the economic capabilities of its leader
and his influence in Kotayk province.

Ter-Petrosyan further said that he had no doubts that the party would
avoid linking its name to former President Robert Kocharyan as by
doing it the party would assume also the responsibilities of the 1,
2 March 2008 events.

Further, citing an unnamed source, the paper claims that after this
statement the HAK and the Prosperous Armenia party held a meeting.

The same source told the paper that later they held another meeting,
and now continue holing talks over possible unification.

ANKARA: Turkey, France And Sarkozy

TURKEY, FRANCE AND SARKOZY

Today’s Zaman, Turkey
Oct 14 2011

Turkey’s relations with France throughout history have had many ups
and downs. There are numerous linkages between these two countries
that are not always adequately articulated. For instance, one of the
greatest French thinkers was Jean-Jacques Rousseau.

Did you know that Rousseau’s father was looking after the Ottoman
palace’s clocks in the Sublime Porte? Indeed, from 1705 to 1711
Rousseau’s father, Isaac Rousseau, who was a watchmaker, served the
Ottoman sultan in Istanbul. Turkey and France established diplomatic
relations in 1525, and this bilateral diplomatic relationship
constitutes one of the oldest diplomatic relationships in history. If
we move on to the more recent past we see that there is a strong
economic dimension to Turkish-French relations. France is one of the
greatest investors in the Turkish economy. French moviegoers follow
Turkish cinema closely, not to mention the more than 5,000 words we
have imported from French.

These linkages, be they in the economic, cultural and even political
field, suffered an immense blow in 2007 when Nicolas Paul Stéphane
Sarközy de Nagy-Bocsa — that is his full name — was elected
president of the French Republic. The rise of Nicolas Sarkozy to the
French presidency has dramatically altered the atmosphere between
our nations. Within a very short time the French president became the
personification of European opposition to Turkey’s bid to join the EU.

He argued vehemently that Turkey was not part of European identity
from the past to today. Worse, he frequently employs discriminatory
and Islamophobic language vis-a-vis Turkey.

Of course one reason behind Turkey bashing a la Sarkozy is that there
is almost no cost for French domestic politics in doing so. Despite
the 500,000 Turks who live in France, they wield little political
influence. On the other hand, the well-established Armenian community
projects much more influence than its numbers would suggest. So, when
President Sarkozy started preaching to Turkey about the unfortunate
events of 1915 in Yerevan last week and urged Turkey to revisit its
history, even the French press was blunt about Sarkozy’s timing,
which was described as “calculated provocation” aimed at wooing the
Armenian vote in France.

Despite the war on Muammar Gaddafi and the hastily arranged visit of
Sarkozy and Cameron just one day before Prime Minister Recep Tayyip
Erdogan was scheduled to be in Libya, public opinion polls in France
are not looking good. Although it is still too early to write Mr.

Sarkozy off, he does seem to be in genuine trouble. According to a
recent Economist piece, 68 percent of respondents told a Viavoice
poll that they do not want Sarkozy to be re-elected. Undoubtedly,
Turks would be extremely happy to see him lose, but there is plenty
of time left in the campaign.

Of course should he lose and Merkel be pushed out of the German
chancellorship there could be a remarkably different picture at hand
in the heart of Europe. Turkey’s EU membership aspirations could get
an unexpected boost, but I do not think anyone is betting on this
right now.

Under the leadership of Sarkozy, France has come to represent the
essence of opposition to Turkish interests. This opposition was
not limited to blocking Turkey’s negotiation process, but is visible
wherever Turkey’s growing power and influence can be observed. Ranging
from North Africa to the Levant, from the Balkans to the Caucasus,
Sarkozy’s France seems to be operating in a sort of “contested
neighborhood” framework. It is self-evident that France loses from
this staunchly anti-Turkish approach. Sarkozy’s roots go back to the
Ottoman city of Salonika. He is a descendent of the Mallah family.

“Mallah” means messenger or angel in Hebrew. Sarkozy has been no
angel to Turkey. His legacy is likely to remain one of greatest
disappointments to what could have been a mutually beneficial
Turkish-French partnership.

BAKU: ‘Nagorno Karabakh Armenians Can Determine Their Destiny Within

‘NAGORNO KARABAKH ARMENIANS CAN DETERMINE THEIR DESTINY WITHIN AZERBAIJAN’

news.az, Azerbaijan
Oct 14 2011

‘Armenian living in Nagorno-Karabakh can determine their destiny
within borders of Azerbaijan.

They have rights and obligations as citizens of Azerbaijan and they
can enjoy autonomous status to develop their specific features’.

The statement came from head of the political analysis and information
department at the Presidential Administration of Azerbaijan Elnur
Aslanov in his remarks to the presentation ceremony of a book
“Post-conflict restoration of Azerbaijan’s lands: conceptual basis”
co-authored by Nazim Muzaffarli and Eldar Ismayilov.

The principle of self-determination should not contradict the principle
of territorial integrity in any case, he noted.

‘This principle does not apply to national minorities. It should be
noted that the main reason why Armenia avoids the negotiating process
is that the essence of common principles contradicts their insidious
intentions. The establishment of peace in the region necessitates
social and economic development in the occupied lands and improving
welfare of population, especially Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh as
a first step.

Vast financial opportunities of Azerbaijan allow it to implement
programs and projects in the lands to be freed from occupation. This,
of course, requires to study the situation in detail, to conduct
assessment and determine what is needed and take planned action. This
book is a good database about geographical features, financial
resources and economic potential of the occupied lands. Its value also
lies in a conceptual basis of restoration in these lands contained
in it.’

GEORGIE
