a territory to construct a sports school.

numerous rumors.

territory at a cheaper cost to build a boxing school for children in

ANKARA: Is Erdoðan The New Nasser?

IS ERDOGAN THE NEW NASSER?

Hurriyet
Sept 9 2011
Turkey

Gamal Abdel Nasser’s remarkable string of successes propelled him
to dominate Arab world throughout the 1950s thanks to the power of
long-distance audio broadcasting, as well as the spread of affordable
transistor radios, says Eugene Rogan in his notable “The Arabs.” His
anti-imperial credentials while nationalizing the Suez Canal and
defending it against the French, British and Israeli forces in 1956,
successfully ending British rule, coupled with his emphasis on Arab
solidarity, made him a peerless leader. “Nasserism” became the dominant
expression of Arab nationalism which promised the unification of the
Arab people.

Since the U.N. Palmer Report was released last Friday, a rougher era
of ties between Turkey and Israel has begun. First, Turkish Foreign
Minister Ahmet Davutoglu decreed a “Plan B,” which included diplomatic,
military and legal sanctions against Israel.

This week Ankara decided to ratchet up the pressure. Prime Minister
Recep Tayyip Erdogan openly threatened that Turkish gunboats would
escort aid vessels (some say work is already in progress) the next
time they set sail. Erdogan also said Turkey had taken steps to stop
Israel unilaterally exploiting natural resources from the eastern
Mediterranean.

Ankara then leaked a “Plan C” to pro-government media on Thursday.

According to this plan, following Turkey’s decision to campaign
actively for Palestinian statehood at the United Nations, which the
State Department considered a “a matter of concern,” Turkey plans
to sign an “Exclusive Economic Zone” agreement with the “newly born”
state of Palestine even though the latter’s proposed U.N. initiative
is still very much up in the air. Turkey also plans to sign the same
type of agreement with Turkish Cyprus for gas and oil exploration as
well as to ink strategic and economic agreements with Egypt, which is
said to contain similar exclusive economic zone and exploration plans.

Considering the U.S. firm Noble Energy plans to start drilling in
the eastern Mediterranean next month, things appear to be moving
rather quickly.

Erdogan, on the other hand, is gearing up for an Arab Spring tour,
in which he will visit Egypt, Tunisia and Libya, countries who have
successfully overthrown their dictators. Erdogan will be the first
head of government to visit Libya since rebels forced Col. Moammar
Gadhafi to leave Tripoli, just as Davutoglu was the first to visit
Benghazi following the march of the rebel forces into Tripoli. It is
clear that Ankara is trying hard to close the gap between itself and
the French-British coalition which gave the earliest support to the
Libyan National Transitional Council.

The visit and the messages that will be given during the tour will
be watched by Washington and Tel Aviv with deep curiosity. Israel’s
undisclosed nuclear arsenal is said to be another part of the Turkish
assault strategy on Israel in this trip.

A well-positioned Washington source stated that following the release
of the Palmer report, a meeting was held at the U.S. Defense Department
in which it was posited that Davutoglu’s tough rhetoric was meant
for domestic consumption and was expected to fade away slowly.

However, as the week progressed and alternative plans were announced
(in addition to the direct threats from Erdogan), the mood in
Washington started changing. By week’s end, the relative comfort
earlier in the week in Washington had disappeared, replaced by a
worry that “things might actually spiral out” of control in the
eastern Mediterranean.

Nasser’s remarkable run of successes came to an end when the union
with Syria unraveled in 1961, the Egyptian army got mired in Yemen’s
civil war and he led his nation and its Arab allies into a disastrous
war with Israel in 1967. The liberation of Palestine was set back
by Israel’s occupation of the remaining Palestinian territories,
as well as Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula and Syria’s Golan Heights.

Needless to say, Erdogan is not Nasser, and neither is Turkey Egypt.

The Middle East has changed enormously, even in just the last few
months. Still, history holds lessons dear for ambitious leaders,
particularly when it comes to the Middle East.

ISRAELI FM INTENDS TO BOOST ARMENIAN GENOCIDE RECOGNITION, “YEDIOTH AHRONOTH” NEWSPAPER WRITES

Mediamax, Armenia
Sept 9 2011

Yerevan/Mediamax/. Minister of Foreign Affairs of Israel Avigdor
Liberman ordered to work out measures to withstand Turkey on
international arena and consider measures for rapprochement with
Armenia.

Israeli “Yedioth Ahronoth” newspaper wrote this, Mediamax reports
quoting News.co.il web site.

The newspaper writes that rapprochement with Armenia, first of all
through the recognition of the Armenian Genocide, is considered as one
of the measures. “During his upcoming visit to USA Avigdor Liberman
is going to meet with representatives of the Armenian lobby and offer
Israel’s assistance in promoting the issue of Genocide recognition
on international arena,” the newspaper writes.

In their recent interviews to Mediamax, Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister
Danny Ayalon and Israeli Ambassador Shmuel Meirom stressed that Israel
never denied the “tragic events” and “mass murder” of Armenians during
the World War I, however, this issue has become political and Israel
doesn’t wish to become a party to the confrontation between Armenia
and Turkey on this important issue.”

Besides, Danny Ayalon preferred to abstain from answering Mediamax’s
question about Israeli-Turkish relations.

TEL AVIV: Lieberman: Exact A Price From Turkey

LIEBERMAN: EXACT A PRICE FROM TURKEY

Arutz Sheva
Sept 9 2011
Israel

Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman plans to adopt measures that will
show Turkey is must treat Israel with ‘respect and common decency.’

Israel news photo: Flash 90Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman has
decided to adopt a series of reciprocal measures in response to
Turkey’s latest anti-Israeli moves.

Senior Foreign Ministry officials convened Thursday to prepare for a
meeting on Saturday with Lieberman dedicated to formulating a response
to Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s recent threats and
his decision to downgrade Ankara’s diplomatic ties with Jerusalem.

Following Thursday’s meeting, officials said in their estimation
Turkey is not, as it claims, interested in an Israeli apology and is
instead exploiting the dispute with Jerusalem to increase Ankara’s
stature in the Muslim world.

Lieberman, officials say, decided there was no point in seeking
creative formulas for apologizing and chose, instead, to protect
Israel’s dignity with a muscular response.

But whereas Turkish moves appear to telegraph a direct, potentially
military confrontation, Leiberman’s moves are aimed at dealing a blow
to Turkey’s international standing.

In that vein the Foreign Ministry has decided to proceed with the
formulation of a diplomatic and security “toolbox” to be used against
the Turks. The first move would be to issue a travel warning urging
all Israeli military veterans to refrain from traveling to Turkey,
even for connecting flights.

Another move would be cooperation with Turkey’s historic rivals,
the Armenians. During Lieberman’s upcoming visit to the United States
later this month he is expected to meet with leaders of the Armenian
lobby and propose anti-Turkish cooperation in Congress.

The implication of this move could be Israeli recognition of,
and assistance in promoting international recognition for, the
Armenian genocide. A measure certain to incense Ankara who fears
broad recognition would hurt its global stature. Israel may also
choose to back Armenia in its dispute vis-a-vis Turkey over control
of Mount Ararat.

Lieberman is also reportedly planning to set meetings with the heads
of Kurdish rebel group PKK in Europe in order to “cooperate with them
and boost them in every possible area.”

In these meetings, the Kurds are likely to ask Israel for military
aid in the form of training and arms supplies, a move that would
mean backing a foreign insurgency and constitute a major anti-Turkish
position should it materialize.

However, violent clashes between Turkey and the Kurds are only one
avenue of advancing the narrative Ankara is violating human rights.

Another tactic vis-a-vis Erdogan is a diplomatic campaign where
Israeli missions worldwide will be instructed to join the fight and
report Turkish oppression of minorities.

The tough response formulated by Lieberman stems, among other things,
from the foreign minister’s desire to make it clear to Erdogan that
his anti-Israeli moves are not a “one-way street.”

Officials in Jerusalem also noted that Turkey’s international forecast
at this time is not promising, adding that Ankara is embroiled in
tensions with NATO and Greece, while Erdogan’s relations with Syria
and Iran are also not favorable.

“We’ll exact a price from Erdogan that will prove to him that messing
with Israel doesn’t pay off,” Lieberman said. “Turkey must treat us
with respect and common decency.”
