RETURN OF OLIGARCHS TO PARLIAMENT ‘DISGUSTING PHENOMENON’ – EXPERT

The wish of Armenian oligarchs to return to parliament is a ‘disgusting
phenomenon’ and a ‘matter of concern’ Richard Giragosyan, director
of Regional Studies Center, told a news conference today.

‘In English it is called ‘Frankenstein’s monster’, he said. According
to him, the oligarchs have become a threat not only for people but
the state as well: they pay small taxes but have focused the economy
of the country in their hands.

The expert also said he does not understand why an oligarch goes to
meeting with people with a gun, like in case of the leader of the
Prosperous Armenia party (PAP) Gagik Tsarukyan.

‘Does it mean the oligarch is afraid of people, or it just shows what
kind of figure he is?,’ Giragosyan said.

The Minority’s Spring

THE MINORITY’S SPRING
By OMER GENDLER

Ever since Britain and France occupied the Middle East, the myth of
the “Arab” Middle East spread across the world. Large parts of the
world saw the Middle East as one homogeneous unit-the Arab nation-with
other unwanted minorities to blame for the woes of the region.

We learn this to be an illusion, especially following the Arab Spring.

Iraq’s liberation from the hands of Saddam Hussein provides the
most telling example. The de-facto division of Iraq into different
minorities-Sunnis, Shiites, and Kurds-exemplifies the myth of the
regions homogeneity. Especially in northern Iraq, the long-standing
Kurdish minority sprung forward and demands its historical rights in
the renewed wave of self-determination.

The same process occurs in the greater Middle East. The breakup of the
Soviet Union granted independence to Armenia and Azerbaijan. The two
countries, although geographically distant from the core of the Middle
East, feel historically and culturally connected to the region. The
Armenians see themselves as the original Christian followers and
zealously guard the Armenian Quarter in Jerusalem’s Old City. And,
the Shiite Azeris see their legacy deeply rooted in the ancient
Persian Empire, no less than the Iranians themselves.

Additionally, Southern Sudan, which recently gained independence,
illustrates another example as it represents the first time in
modern history that sovereignty was passed from an Arab to a
Christian country. Finally, Libya’s recent civil war exemplified
the insurmountable divide between the Tripolitania, Benghazi and the
Touareg tribe of Fezzan.

The aforementioned examples demonstrate that the “Arab” North-African
countries are not so Arab. Among them we find enormous minorities-tens
of millions of people-including Berbers, Darfuris, Coptic Christians,
and many other who have nothing in common with the Arabs.

Syria illustrates the most recent example heading toward an “Iraqi”
future of its own. One would expect opposition to unite in times
of strife. Nevertheless, as the death toll rises and Assad’s regime
continues to struggle, no unified opposition is prepared to take the
lead and raise the flag following victory. The somewhat organized
changes of government in Egypt, Tunisia, and Yemen are not expected to
repeat in Syria. On the contrary, Syria is on the verge of a second
civil war, and can easily split into various minorities including
Alawites, Christians, Sunnis, and Druze among others. Syria today risks
becoming its Eastern neighbor-Lebanon-which has been divided since
its establishment. Such future composed of an endless mosaic of tiny
minorities that stretch from the Beirut shores on the Mediterranean
Sea to the Basra shores in the Persian Gulf.

The Arab Spring revealed that all that is known about the Middle East
could change overnight. More specifically, as the once all-mighty
leaders can now be overcome, so can Middle East borders be subject
to changes in accordance with the rising minorities. The Arab Spring
exemplified the desire of Arab youth to have their voice heard. More
importantly, however, the Arab Spring illustrated that the Arab Spring
is not only Arab and that there are many other voices ignored and
forgotten that now demand to be heard. This is the Minority’s Spring,
which signals the end of the Arab hegemony in the area. We have been
introduced to a new Middle East-a Minority’s Middle East.

Zolyan Doesn’t Deny The Information About Winding Up The University

ZOLYAN DOESN’T DENY THE INFORMATION ABOUT WINDING UP THE UNIVERSITY AND SAYS HIS DISMISSAL IS ILLEGAL

17:05 . 18/04

The events continue to become heated over the Yerevan State Linguistic
University. Despite the efforts which the university’s management,
the staff and the rector Suren Zolyan have been taking since morning,
the students of the university came out to the street after 2:00pm.

Those gathered moved towards the ministry of education and science
with numerous posters of protest and chanting. They demanded to
have annulled the minister’s decree about their rector’s dismissal
by tomorrow. Before the ministry building already the students held
a demonstration and demanded that Minister Armen Ashotyan comes down
and speaks to them. In answer, the minister invited their delegation to
him, but the students, in their turn, didn’t respond to the invitation
and moved towards the government building.

Suren Zolyan answered the questions of the journalists gathered at
the university if there are political motives in his dismissal or not.

Zolyan said he cannot make any assumptions and said there are no such
motives. Nevertheless, he noted a tendency of acting against him but
he is not aware of its reasons. Suren Zolyan said once again that the
minister’s steps are illegal and has turned to court, as well as to
the prime minister to dispute them. He has said he believes in the
impartiality of our courts and the issue will still become a topic
of discussion in the European structures.

Touching upon the information about winding up the linguistic
university and uniting it with the pedagogical university Zolyan said
he cannot definitely deny it but doesn’t consider it serious. He
cannot deny it definitely as two years ago some things happened
about which he preferred to keep silent till now. Two years ago by
the decree of Minister Armen Ashotyan the university was deprived of
the license to promote activity in the specialties of Linguistics and
Intercultural Communication. The minister, of course, annulled the
decree under serious pressures. Otherwise, according to Zolyan the
university would really be wound up losing the overwhelming majority
of the staff and students.

To note, the university’s lecturers also circulated a manifesto today
in protection of Zolyan.

We should also inform that the TV programme “Yerkri Harts” [The Issue
of the Country] of Yrekir Media TV Company will host Suren Zolyan
today. You can watch it at 10:30pm.

GLENDALE OFFICIALS REACT TO KIM KARDASHIAN’S POSSIBLE FUTURE BID FOR MAYOR

YEREVAN

YEREVAN, APRIL 18, ARMENPRESS: Kim Kardashian’s declaration that she
wants to run for the mayor of Glendale, California in the future has
drawn reaction from several city officials, reports Armenpress citing
ACESHOWBIZ. While city spokesman Tom Lorenz clarified that there is no
public election for the position, two city council members expressed
their support for the reality star.

City Councilman Rafi Manoukian told E! News, “I would support
her. I think she would make an excellent mayor.” City Councilman and
former mayor Ara Najarian also thought “it’s a great idea.” In fact,
he claimed to have reached out to her representative to offer her
“the position of honorary chief of staff to my office to help her
get acquainted to Glendale.”

In another interview with On the Red Carpet, Najarian explained about
his offer. “I know Kim is busy all over the world and all that but
if she’s able to come in a few days a week or a few days a month to
see how the city works and see all the great things we do,” he said,
“if she wants to learn how Glendale runs this is really the best way
to do it.”

Najarian also expressed hope that Kardashian would attend Glendale’s
annual Armenian genocide commemoration. He believes that her attendance
“would make a great impact on the city.” Unfortunately, Kardashian’s
spokesperson said the estranged wife of Kris Humphrieswon’t be able
to make it.

Another Glendale official commenting on Kardashian’s intent to run for
mayor was City Clerk Ardashes Kassakhian. He told Los Angeles Times
that by talking about her possible political bid, the reality star
“has done what we try to do election after election after election.”

He added, “I think it would be one of the more closely followed
elections in Glendale’s history.”

Russian Radar Stations Will Be Placed In Irkutsk, Kaliningrad, Lenin

RUSSIAN RADAR STATIONS WILL BE PLACED IN IRKUTSK, KALININGRAD, LENINGRAD REGION AND ARMAVIR NOT IN ARMENIA

arminfo
Wednesday, April 18, 15:38

Russia will not place a radar station like “Voronezh Radar” in Armenia
despite previous reports, a source from the Russian Defense Ministry
told Nezavisimaya Gazeta.

Instead, radar stations will be created in the territory of Russia:
Irkutsk, Kaliningrad, Leningrad region and Armavir, as well as in
the Transdniestria.

Earlier semi-official sources in Moscow were insisting that Russia
will create a radar station in Armenia if Moscow and Baku fail to
arrive at an agreement regarding the terms of Gabala station. Prime
Minister of Armenia Tigran Sargsyan, in turn, expressed readiness to
provide relevant territory.

To recall, Azerbaijan demands Russia to pay a higher annual lease
price for the Gabala radar station (former Armenian Kutkashen) i.e.

300 million dollars instead of the current 7 million dollars. The
leasing agreement signed with Russia in 2002 will be valid till Dec
24 2012.

FORMER FM SAYS MEETING VOTERS WITH A GUN IS NOT A BIG DEAL

PanARMENIAN.Net
April 18, 2012 – 13:18 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – Leader of the coalition Prosperous Armenia party
Gagik Tsarukyan did have a gun in his belt during a meeting with
voters in Armenian town of Etchmiadzin on April 13, party member,
former foreign minister of Armenia Vartan Oskanian said.

This is not a big deal, Oskanian told the journalists at the 3rd
meeting of the anti-forgery headquarters held at the Political
Analysts Union.

“Gagik [Tsarukyan] decided to come to the meeting this way. If you
have the legal right to carry weapon, you have the right to do so,”
Oskanian emphasized.

Judging from the pictures taken at the rally, it is obvious that
Tsarukyan had a gun and not allegedly a telephone in his belt,
Prosperous Armenia’s member said.

Meanwhile, Armenian law “On Freedom of Rallies” prohibits carrying
weapon during mass gatherings.

Parliamentary elections are due in Armenia on May 6 featuring 8
political parties (Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), Prosperous
Armenia, ARF Dashnaktsutyun (ARFD), Orinats Yerkir, Heritage,
Democratic Party of Armenia (DPA), Communist Party of Armenia and
United Armenian party, as well as one election bloc represented by
opposition Armenian National Congress (ANC).

DIYARBAKIR. – A delegation led by the president of the World Council
of Assyrians Johny Messo met with Diyarbakir Mayor Osman Baydemir.

As the Turkish Haberler informs, the mayor mentioned that a great
tragedy happened in the beginning of the 20th century as a result
of which the Armenians, Assyrians and Yezidis had to leave their
hometowns.

“They suffered much and left, but be assured that it is us, who stayed
here, that lost something. After they left, we got poor and lost our
peace. The new generation faces the history and condemns the cruelties
of the past,” Osman Baydemir stated.
