YEREVAN, AUGUST 2, ARMENPRESS: New York Times Best-Selling author
Chris Bohjalian capped a full day on Capitol Hill with a compelling
presentation of “The Sandcastle Girls,” his newly published novel
about the Armenian Genocide, to a standing room only Congressional
audience today. As Armenpress reports citing the Armenian National
Committee of America, the event in support of the book, published
by Doubleday, was co-hosted by Armenian Genocide Resolution lead
sponsors, Representatives Robert Dold (R-IL) and Adam Schiff (D-CA),
and the ANCA.

“Today’s strong turn-out on Capitol Hill speaks very powerfully
to Chris Bohjalian’s great talent as a story-teller who enlightens,
educates, and-ultimately-empowers his readers,” said ANCA Chairman Ken
Hachikian. “His work explores-as only art can-the key unresolved human
and moral issues of the Armenian Genocide, raising awareness of this
crime, even as it reinforces our common resolve to seek its truthful
and just resolution. We look forward to building on this excitement,
here in Washington and in communities across our country, to finally
get America on the right side of this issue, and to end forever the
denial by Turkey of this still unpunished atrocity.”

Community members, who had earlier purchased copies of the book,
stood in line to meet the author and have the novel signed before and
after the official book presentation. ANCA Executive Director Aram
Hamparian welcomed attendees and cited the important role that works
like “The Sandcastle Girls” play in educating mainstream America about
the Armenian Genocide and the consequences of Turkey’s Genocide denial.

Congressional Armenian Caucus Co-Chair Frank Pallone (D-NJ) and
Representatives Schiff, Jackie Speier (D-CA) and David Cicilline
(D-RI), as well as, former U.S. Ambassador to Armenia John Evans
and his wife Donna joined Congressional staff and community members
at the event. The Armenian Ambassador, Tatoul Markarian, who is on
travel outside of Washington, DC, was represented by senior diplomats
Antranik Hovhannisyan and Harutyun Kojoyan. Among the notable figures
publicly recognized at the event was popular actress and community
activist Anne Bedian (Ani Nahabedian).

Rep. Schiff explained that Bohjalian’s novel, “which has been so
wonderfully reviewed, has a power of its own, to tell the story in
very human terms, to bring us all into the living rooms of those who
were lost and those who struggled through those dark times in the
history of civilization. I think it is a vital part in the education
of not only the Congress, but the Armenian people about the facts of
the Armenian Genocide.”

Rep. Pallone told attendees that “all of you being here and the
author’s efforts constantly bring to our attention the need for
recognition of the Armenian Genocide,” noting that it is an ongoing
effort to secure Congressional reaffirmation of this crime.

Bohjalian opened his remarks by thanking the ANCA and the
organization’s interns for bringing “The Sandcastle Girls” to a
Congressional audience and for their ongoing grassroots effort to
represent Armenian American interests on Capitol Hill. “One of the
things that I have learned is that the ANCA is not merely a force of
nature to be reckoned with,” said Bohjalian. “The ANCA is a profoundly
accurate moral compass and I will always be thankful for the profoundly
important legislative work that they have done, that they are doing,
and that they continue to do. So, I think you so much for taking me
in your warm embrace.”

Bohjalian then thanked his readers, referring to them as the “medieval
monks of the digital age, because you still care about what words,
and reading and books mean to the soul.”

Bohjalian captivated the audience as he discussed the life journey
that inspired him to write the book, and gave moving testament of his
visits to the lands of his Armenian ancestors, to current day Armenia,
and Anjar, Lebanon, the home of many who fought to defend the villages
of Musa Dagh during the Genocide.

In a particularly poignant moment, Bohjalian described his last
morning in Yerevan, when he caught a clear glimpse of Mount Ararat
as he waited to board his flight home. “There I was standing, at
Gate A5 waiting for my flight, and I started weeping. I was weeping
for my ancestors. I was weeping for the gift of this mountain and,
I was weeping because I knew in my heart that ‘The Sandcastle Girls’
is the most important book that I was ever going to write; and,
I was grateful beyond words, that I had been given that gift.”

The recent meeting with the representatives of the Armenian community
in Syria, hosted at the Diaspora Ministry of Armenia, covered issues
related to the developments in Syria, the Ministry’s press service
told ArmInfo.

During the meeting, Armenian Diaspora Minister Hranush Hakobyan said
that a working group was set up, which studied the issues raised by
the Armenians of Syria, classified them and sent them to the relevant
state structures.

She said that 2 decisions of the Government of Armenia would come
into effect within 10 days. According to one of the decisions, the
Syrian Armenians, who have gained Armenian citizenship, will be able to
receive passports at the Armenian Embassy in Damascus and the Armenian
Consulate in Aleppo. The other decision says that the Syrian Armenians
will be able to receive an entry visa on the border with Armenia.

Hakobyan also pointed out that the Diaspora Ministry applied to the
Education Ministry to discuss the possibility of higher education
for the Syrian Armenians for a tuition fee similar to that for the
Armenian citizens.

Hranush Hakobyan said that the Health Ministry addresses the medical
assistance and service issues of the Syrian Armenians. According to
the Migration Agency of Armenia, 30 families have applied to them so
far, and they were provided with rooms in dormitories.

For their part, the Armenians of Syria pointed out Armenia’s warm
attitude towards them and stressed the significance of the Diaspora
Ministry’s work. They also expressed hope that all the problems will
be solved at the state level.

They also asked the Armenian mass media to display restraint when
covering the problems of the Syrian Armenians, because even one
incautious phrase may endanger the Armenian community of Syria.

At a press conference on Wednesday environmentalist, lawyer Arthur
Grigoryan said the environmentalists have revealed regular violations
of officials after learning from the web site presenting Khosrov
reserve that the territory has been cut by 6,000 hectares.

“The web site says the reserve comprises of five territories – Garni,
Kaqavaberdm Urtsi, Khosrov, Khachasar – the total area of which makes
29,158 hectares. While the first page of the web site has omitted
Urtsi territory, saying the total area of the reserve makes 23,000
hectares. A question rises how did it happen? Who has withdrawn
Ursti?” Grigoryan asked.

Arthur Grigoryan said they do not yet want to open the brackets
as they do not possess the full information but claimed that the
territory was not withdrawn without a purpose.

“The same territory called Urtsasar belongs to one of the oligarchs,”
Grigoryan claimed, without revealing the name of that oligarch yet.

SARDARAPAT MOVEMENT CALLS ON ARTSAKH AUTHORITIES TO SETTLE LIBERATED TERRITORIES AROUND KARABAKH WITH ARMENIANS OF SYRIA

“The past presidential elections in the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic
(NKR) let us state that prerequisites are being created in Artsakh for
political activation of the people”, Sardarapat Movement says in its
statement. The movement supports the political opposition in Artsakh
and hopes that the opposition will form a new political culture,
offer new original models to address the issues of the Armenians
worldwide, and will make its own contribution to the restoration and
consolidation of the Armenian statehood.

Sardarapat also calls on the NKR authorities to consider the Karabakh
problem only in the context of all- Armenian interests and to take the
most active part in the implementation of the topical tasks faced by
the Armenians worldwide. One of these tasks is to provide relevant
conditions for the Syrian Armenians to return to their homeland,
Sardarapat says. The movement thinks that the liberated territories
around the NKR can and must be settled with the Armenians of Syria.

On July 22 the Central Electoral Commission of the NKR summed up the
final results of the July 19 presidential elections. The turnout was
73.43%, and the incumbent president of the NKR, Bako Sahakyan was
re-elected with 47095 votes (66.70%).

Vitaly Balasanyan, a hero of the Artsakh war, ex-deputy defense
minister of the NKR, the candidate from the opposition, obtained
32.50% of votes. He announced the creation of the political force,
which will defend the interests of the opposition electorate.

A Newly Published Bibliography On Armenian Genocide Is Available Onl

A NEWLY PUBLISHED BIBLIOGRAPHY ON ARMENIAN GENOCIDE IS AVAILABLE ONLINE

A newly published bibliography covering literary publications on the
Armenian Genocide will now serve as a key to the multitude of works
written on this important chapter in history, Center for Armenian
Remembrance informs about this.

Bibliographer Eddie Yeghiayan, Ph.D., has gathered a vast and extensive
library of material on the Armenian Genocide, providing copious notes
and details on the major works that have dealt with the destruction
of the Armenians during World War I. In the “Armenian Genocide
Bibliography,” Yeghiayan has arranged a library of information to
help us gain a better grasp of the thousands of publications covering
the genocide.

Of course, any bibliography that aspires to furnish an exhaustive
collection of literature on so broad a topic as the Armenian
Genocide will always fall just short of completeness. The voluminous
documentation that exists on the systematic extermination of the
Armenians during the First World War ranges from contemporary articles
published in newspapers and journals worldwide, in the reports,
correspondence, diaries, and memoirs of military men and statesmen,
the eyewitness testimony of survivors, missionaries, relief officials,
and officials in the diplomatic corps, to material from the archives
of the United States, Europe, and the Near East, to say nothing about
the numerous studies published in the realm of academia.

Looking past the problems inherent in so daunting an enterprise, it is
nonetheless surprising that no dedicated bibliography on the Armenian
Genocide has appeared since Richard G. Hovannisian’s The Armenian
Holocaust: A Bibliography Relating to the Deportations, Massacres,
and Dispersion of the Armenian People, 1915-1923 in 1980. It was in
order to fill this gap, to provide to the scholar and the layman alike
a clear and accessible work of reference that Dr. Eddie Yeghiayan of
the University of California, Irvine undertook the painstaking process
of compiling a comprehensive bibliography on the Armenian Genocide.

The descendant of survivors of the massacres and deportations,
Yeghiayan has not only drawn from scholarly books, articles, and print
media, but has also produced lists of works published in the fields
of the arts and literature, as well as in the medium of television,
documentaries, and the Internet. At over a thousand pages long and
the product of five years’ of research, he has collated a vast and
diverse array of material and presented it to the reader in a cogent
and gracefully organized format. The Armenian Genocide: A Bibliography
will prove to be the definitive work for reference an! d consul tation
for a new generation of scholars and individuals keen on learning
about the first major humanitarian crisis of the twentieth century.

“The Center for Armenian Remembrance is proud to bring the first of
its kind digital archive of this vast collection of publications. The
bibliography is available to the public and fully searchable at

concludes.
