Artin Elmayan is the oldest-ranked tennis player of the world

Artin Elmayan is the oldest-ranked tennis player of the world

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 19, ARMENPRESS: “I’ve got to get my rackets,” he
says under the shadow of the Monumental, the giant stadium which is
home to one of the world’s great soccer clubs where members enjoy a
variety of sports. As Armenpress reports citing Reuters, Armenian-born
Elmayan’s choice is tennis, a sport he took up at the age of 39. Now,
aged 95, he is the world’s oldest-ranked player. The International
Tennis Federation ranks Elmayan 26th among men over 85, a list headed
by Italian Angelo Sala who will be 86 in December. There are only 39
men in the ITF’s over-85 ranking, three of them Argentines, and
Elmayan is the only one born before 1920. The next oldest are
Eugeniusz Czerepaniak of Poland who is 91 and ranked one place above
Elmayan, and 90-year-old Australian Neville Halligan, the number
eight. Elmayan does not compete internationally so he is likely to
meet only fellow-Argentines Guillermo Garcia or Jose Otero, both in
their 80s, in competitions. “Eighty-five plus, because there isn’t
anyone who’s 90, much less 95. So I have to play against
85-year-olds,” Elmayan told Reuters in an interview. “I do all right,
sometimes I take second place. Last year I won second place twice. It
depends on the state of my opponent, and my own. There are no enigmas
here,” he said after a 20-minute knockup with one of the club’s
coaches. The sprightly Elmayan enjoys a routine that keeps him slim
and happy, travelling by train into the capital to River Plate from
the suburbs three times a week. “If my body and feet allow it, I’m not
going to sit still. As far as stretching, I take the train and walk
from the station to here. When I get here I’ve already loosened up,”
he said. Elmayan said that if he had to play three sets, he was able
to cope and recalled having recently played and lost against Garcia,
seven years younger than him, and then suggesting they go for a run.
“Are you crazy, now you want to run?” Elmayan, laughing, recalled
Garcia as saying. Elmayan, who emigrated to Argentina from Europe when
it was on the verge of war in 1938 at the age of 21, said he took up
tennis as a hobby and has never looked back. He is part of a large
Armenian community in Argentina that includes leading professional and
former world number three David Nalbandian. Elmayan said he had never
had a tennis lesson, taking his cue from playing “paleta”, a sport
with a wooden paddle-like racket and rubber ball that he played when
he was younger. “No one told me how to hold a racket, I copied it from
paleta and went on from there,” he said. Elmayan’s whole family plays
or played tennis, his wife now 88, daughter, son-in-law and two
grandchildren. He lost a grandson, who represented the club at tennis,
at the age of 21 from cancer, a shock that may have added to his
fierce grip on life. “First there is eating and then comes tennis. It
is part of my life to stay in shape in every way,” said Elmayan from
behind his goggle-like sunglasses on a bright late winter’s day in
Buenos Aires. “Tennis makes you breathe oxygen, keeps your body in
shape, keeps you from getting a belly, or getting fat, helps fight
cholesterol problems and everything,” he said. “Now, if you stop
coming, if I go two months without playing, I’ll get a belly.”

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 19, ARMENPRESS: The `Cooperation 2012′ joint
military drills of the Collective Rapid Response Forces (CRRF) of the
Collective Security Treaty Organization (SCTO) were conducted on high
level. According to Armenpress, this evaluation of the military drills
conducted in Armenia was given by the CSTO Secretary General Nikolay
Bordyuzha.

The subdivisions of the Armed Forces, Security Services and Internal
Affairs Ministries of the CSTO member countries took part in the
military drills. `In fact, a large-scale work has been done, but the
most important thing is that the Armed Forces, Ministry of Defense of
the Republic of Armenia and the Minister himself made great efforts to

implementation of the drills’, – said the CSTO Secretary General.

It is quite important for the CSTO Secretariat that the training

non-aggressive drills were attended also by the representatives of the
Red Cross International Committee.

"Sargsyan Said: I Am Not Stupid"

“SARGSYAN SAID: I AM NOT STUPID”

Is it time to replace the Armenian prime minister? Was President Serzh
Sargsyan’s dissatisfaction at the government on September 15 a hint at
“getting rid” of Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyam?

“I don’t know whether the prime minister will be replaced, but the
consultation means another thing: Serzh Sargsyan declared that if
a good thing is done in the country, the president is responsible
for that. He declared that he realized their bluffs, about which,
as a matter of fact, we have been speaking for 4-5 years.

The news is that the president sees the prime minister at the head
of corruption. He said: “I am not stupid, I am not happy with you”. I
don’t know whether the prime minister will be replaced now or not, it
will become evident in the future, ” deputy of the Armenian National
Congress (HAK) Hrant Bagratyan said.

BORDYUZHA: CSTO DOES NOT NEED UNPREDICTABLE AND UNRELIABLE MEMBER-STATES WHICH ARE LIKE A DRAG

No country has applied to CSTO to join it, but many countries are
concerned about participation in any actions within the frames of
this organization, CSTO Secretary General, Nikolay Bordyuzha, said
at today’s press-conference in Yerevan when asked if this military
and political structure is going to extend.

He also added that at present many neighboring states want to
participate in the joint actions on fighting illegal drug trafficking.

We have been successfully cooperating with more than 20 countries in
this context. “The raising of information safety is on the agenda. We
are also going to create a serious system of collective response
at crisis situations, that may occur as a result of technological
disasters”, – he said.

He said not quantity but high quality participants are important
for the CSTO. “Unfortunately, we have got an experience when a
country joined CSTO but did not want to take part in the work of the
organization. Some time later, it left the organization. In fact,
it made us understand that it does not need such security system. We
don’t need such partners”, – Bordyuzha said meaning Uzbekistan that
left CSTO in June of the current year.

SAFAROV SCANDAL IN ORBAN GOVERNMENT

ARMENPRESS
18 September, 2012
YEREVAN

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 18, ARMENPRESS: The Hungarian opposition arouse a
“Safarov” scandal in the country. It is accepted as well even at the
Government of Viktor Orban, which implemented the Hungarian-Azerbaijani
criminal deal. The Spokesman of the Hungarian Government Giro Andras
gave an interview on the Safarov’s issue, during which he answered the
journalists’ questions with some reserves and sometimes even avoided
the questions on the Hungarian Government’s guilt in extradition of
the Azerbaijani assassin to Azerbaijan.

As reported by Armenpress, quoting the Hungarian nol.hu website, to the
observation, that the Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orban confessed
that the Safarov’s extradition was implemented by his decree, the
Spokesman of the Hungarian Government answered: “I understand why you
raise this question. The announcements spread by the opposition should
have influenced on the Safarov’s scandal. I should say that in case of
a general decision adopted by the Government, correspondent ministries
present corresponding legal opinions and then the Government makes
it decree, which generally depends on the Prime Minister’s position”.

“After the Azerbaijan’s written guarantees, when the extradition was
implemented, does it happen to be that the Azerbaijani Government
lied to the Hungarian Government?” To the journalist’s question Giro
Andras answered that the diplomacy within the framework of this action
is obviously on another platform. To the question did not Azerbaijan
buy state bonds from Hungary, Andras answered that there was not even
talks on that and it did not correspond to the reality.

During the interview the Spokesman of the Hungarian Government Giro
Andras once again stated that in the extradition processes Hungary
acted in correspondence with the international rights norms.

On February 19 2004 in Budapest Azerbaijani assassin Ramil Safarov,
who axe-murdered Armenian officer Gurgen Margaryan while sleeping,
when they were participating in NATO English Language Courses in the
capital of Hungary, was sentenced to life imprisonment without right
to be pardoned for 30 years. On August 31 2012 Safarov was extradited
from Hungary to Azerbaijan and was pardoned by the President Ilham
Aliyev. The murderer was advanced to mayor, provided with an apartment
and given “national hero” and compensated for the 8 years of the
imprisonment in Hungary. Armenia suspended diplomatic relations
