Calling All Santas: Eric’s Wish Is That His Mom Gets Well

CALLING ALL SANTAS: ERIC’S WISH IS THAT HIS MOM GETS WELL

13:05, October 26, 2012

By Shoushan Ohanyan

42 year-old Ashkhen Lazarian and her 9 year-old son Eric live in
the town of Agarak.

Ashkhen suffers from cirrhosis of the liver and hasn’t received any
medical treatment for the past seven months.

“I haven’t been able to continue travelling to Yerevan for treatment.

Each trip costs about 150,000 AMD. I used to pay by taking out loans
but I can’t even do that anymore,” says Ashkhen.

I had heard about the plight of this family months ago and decided
to visit them. They welcomed our team of reporters with open arms.

Ashkhen has sought financial assistance from a number of people, but
few have heeded her call. During our conversation she mentioned the
names of MP Vahe Hakobyan and his father Maxim Hakobyan, Director of
the Kajaran Copper-Molybdenum Combine, as providing some help.

Her illness has gotten worse. Ashkhen now suffers from ascites (fluid
retention in the abdominal cavity). It’s the most common complication
of cirrhosis, and is associated with a poor quality of life, increased
risk of infection, and a poor long-term outcome

“Naturally, any talk of serious treatment with those amounts is out
of the question, but at least I was able to cover the cost of my
medications. The drugs I was taking and should have continued taking
are very expensive,” Ashkhen says.

Even though the woman is classified with a level 2 disability, she
hasn’t been able to get her medications for free.

“They say that I must pay for them since they don’t have the
resources,” Ashkhen explains.

The woman’s one joy in life is her son Eric. Despite his young age,
Eric spends all his free time on the internet, exploring new medical
alternatives and physicians which might help his mother.

“I go on the internet and search for hospitals and doctors. My mother
then makes a selection,” explains Eric, who fully understands the
importance of the responsibility he’s assumed.

The young boy can recite the names of all the hospitals and doctors
that his mother has attended and the drugs she’s taken. That’s the
level of his commitment to his mom.

Eric is a boy who has been forced to grow up quick but he still has
a wish list for Santa Claus.

“I would like Santa Claus to fix my hand and to cure my mother’s
illness,” Eric tells me.

(Eric had broken his hand and due to a mistake made by the doctors
it remains painfully sensitive)

God willing, a number of Santa Clauses will come forth to make Eric’s
wish come true.

It seems that Cilician Catholicosate took offense at comments made
by Father Gyulumyan during a sermon he gave in Los Angeles.

Here’s a snippet of what he said: The church is not a national
institution. The church is the symbolic body of Christ. The church
mustn’t be viewed as a national center or a place to be used. It
must be freed of all types of partisan, Masonic and secret organizing
institutions”

The video below contains more of what Father Gyulumian said as a
basis for his defrocking. (See minute 16)

On October 16, the California-based Asbarez newspaper published the
following news item:

Antelias -The Executive Assembly of the Brotherhood of the Cilician
Catholicosate declares that taking into account the following:

a) The disobedience shown by Father Bartev

b) The fact that he tricked the Catholicosate by staying in Los
Angeles and not to his new post

in Canada

c) His inappropriate comments made in an Armenian Church in Los
Angeles

d) His refusal to write a letter of contrition

The Executive Assembly, according to the charter of the Great House
of Cilicia, unanimously proposed to His Holiness that Father Bartev

GREEN ACTIVISTS DEMAND BRINGING NATURE PROTECTION MINISTER OF ARMENIA TO CRIMINAL RESPONSIBILITY

Thursday, October 25, 17:53

The civil initiatives “Save Teghout”, “Trchkan”, “Khosrov Reserve” and
“Jermuk Will Never Become a Mine” have released a statement demanding
that the Prosecutor General and Special Investigative Service should
bring the Armenian Nature Protection Ministry employees and Minister
Aram Haroutyunyan to criminal responsibility.

The authors of the statement point out that over the past few years
problems have been observed almost in all spheres: development of ore
mining industry, construction of small hydropower plants, protection
of Lake Sevan and other water bodies. The activists say in most cases
the Ministry learns all the problems from the environmentalists,
civil initiatives and the mass media. In the meantime, according to
the regulations of the Nature Protection Ministry, the minister is
responsible for the situation ruling in his sphere. “The Ministry
and the Environmental Inspectorate fail to carry out their functions
and obligations and do not master the situation. This allows us to
state that they display criminal negligence and/or try to conceal
the situation”, the document says.

In this context, the activists call on the Prosecutor General
and Special Investigative Service to bring the Armenian Nature
Protection Ministry employees and Minister Aram Haroutyunyan to
criminal responsibility for the abuse and criminal idleness.
