To highlight its new exchange program with a school in Armenia,
Pingree School in Hamilton is hosting a number of exhibits, including
a collection of books on Armenian subjects.

The collection belongs to Beverly resident John Soursourian, whose
wife, Judith Klein, is director of communications and marketing
at Pingree.

Soursourian, whose father came to America from the town of Kharpert
at the age of 8, has loaned works in English by contemporary
Armenian-American novelists Peter Balakian and Carol Edgarian.

There is also a copy of the memoirs of Henry Morgenthau, American
ambassador to Turkey from 1913 to 1916, describing the genocidal
holocaust in which 1.5 million Armenians were murdered by Turks.

These events are treated in another book in the collection, a textbook
published by the nonprofit organization Facing History and Ourselves,
which helps students address the topic of genocide.

There are titles in Armenian, a language with a unique script that
uses a 36-letter alphabet that was codified in 404 A.D. by St. Mesrob.

There are also books documenting Armenians~R experience as immigrants,
including ~SThe Armenian Quarter of Jerusalem~T and ~SThe Armenian
People of Portland, Maine,~T a collection of photographs.

~SOur Boys,~T which collects photographs of Armenian veterans

soient construites.

Oskanian Recalls Economist Hirschman

OSKANIAN RECALLS ECONOMIST HIRSCHMAN

05:06 PM | TODAY | POLITICS

Albert O. Hirschman, an influential economist who had authored several
books on political economy and political ideology, died in December at
the age of 97. He is widely known for his “Exit, Voice, and Loyalty”
treatise, former foreign minister, Prosperous Armenia member Vartan
Oskanian wrote on his Facebook account.

“The main idea of Hirschman’s theory was that people respond to
the deteriorating situation in two ways; they either turn their
backs and go away, or struggle for changes. Of course, the factor of
loyalty plays a major role in choosing the right option. The author
of the treatise says the approach is equally applicable as to ordinary
consumer environments, in small and big organizations and particularly
in states.

If the consumer is dissatisfied with the quality of the product or the
services of the store, he/she will either take another product of the
same price or go to some other store. If he is a constant buyer of the
store he attempts to recover the situation by voicing his complaint.

Similarly, the employees of a certain company will either resign or
try to improve the situation in the company if they encounter similar
problem there.

Public discontent with the situation in the country stirs up either
struggle or emigration. Those unable to flee the country show disregard
for the ongoing developments. Hirschman’s treatise is quite topical,
given the current situation in Armenia, the emigration rates and the
forthcoming presidential elections,” Vartan Oskanian said.

On
n’en est pas encore la”, a-t-il ajoute.

LEADER OF DPA: ARMENIA SHOULD GET RID OF THE “TRIUMVIRATE” OF THE THREE PRESIDENTS

arminfo
Wednesday, January 9, 15:20

Armenia should get rid of the “triumvirate” of the three presidents:
Levon Ter-Petrosyan, Robert Kocharyan and Serzh Sargsyan. It is
necessary to put an end to their epoch and find new leaders, says
Aram Sargsyan, Leader of Democratic Party of Armenia (DPA).

He told media Wednesday that Armenia needs a new stage of political
development, which requires new quality political figures. Sargsyan
believes that there is relevant potential in the country.

The politician considers the upcoming presidential election quite
strange, as the relatively strong political figures having their
political teams do not participate in the presidential race. Instead,
he said, some unknown persons having no experience in politics claim
such a serious position as the position of the president.

To recall, out of 15 presidential candidates, two are nominated by
the political parties: incumbent president Serzh Sargsyan from the
Republican Party and former prime minister Hrant Bagratyan from the
Liberty Party. All the remaining are self-nominated candidates: Leader
of the Union for National Self- Determination Party Paruyr Hayrikyan,
Leader of Heritage Party Raffi Hovannisian, Advisor for Political
Issues of the Refugees and the International Law Civil Society Network,
ex-foreign minister of NKR Arman Melikyan, a member of Prosperous
Armenia Party Ruben Ayvazyan, non-party man Taron Abrahamyan, Leader
of the Progressive Socialist Party Robert Aharonyan, Director of Hay
Radio Andreas Ghukasyan, unemployed ethnographer Vardan Sedrakyan,
Head of Kashatagh NGO Robert Simonyan, pensioner Pavlik Sargsyan,
unemployed Mher Hayrapetyan, and head of the NAtional Press Club
Narine Lazarian. The elections will be held on Feb 18 2013.

Boredom Defeats Intrigues

BOREDOM DEFEATS INTRIGUES
Levon Margaryan

11:03 10/01/2013
Story from Lragir.am News:

The current situation of the extra-government sector can be described
as fragmental, civil and extra-systemic, non-partisan opposition or
the resistance defeated partisan opposition. In addition, it won
not because its fight was aimed at victory but because the losers
quickly escaped to the margin very quickly, for example, the ANC,
or they failed to find their place and identity in time and space,
for example, the PAP.

As a result, we have appeared in a situation which appears disgusting
because the government has no opponent in the “political field”
to dispute its victory at least a little. It is disgusting because
despite Ter-Petrosyan’s and Tsarukyan’s political qualities,
their participation in the elections would at least bottle up the
overconfident, arrogant attitude of Sharmazanov and his fellows to
the result of the upcoming election.

There is an interesting thing about the self-sufficiency of the
Republicans: it is defeated by Serzh Sargsyan’s “achievements” only.

On these days, in his interview with the Armenian service of RFE/RL,
candidate for president Paruyr Hayrikyan described the current
political situation precisely, saying that Serzh Sargsyan has been
able to take power through legal and illegal means with some defensive
lines, and underlined that he speaks about Serzh Sargsyan and not the
Republicans. The departure of Levon Ter-Petrosyan and Gagik Tsarukyan
from the field is the “achievement” of Serzh Sargsyan’s small group of
“friends” and not the Republican Party.

Let’s come back to the situation of the opposition. At the moment,
this disgusting situation is described by the lack of a candidate
who would shatter the government, if certainly the free field does
not unite around the idea of boycott. This would be a cold shower for
Serzh Sargsyan because his efforts of the past five years to achieve
legitimate reelection will vanish.

The issue is that the upcoming election will be the first in Armenia
which will lack intrigue, which is a negative aspect because hope to
change something in Armenia through elections has always been linked to
intrigues. The presence of intrigues has become a peculiar indicator of
political efficiency, and the opposition is neither willing, nor able
to participate in rational political and legal processes. It believes
in intrigues. By and large, the stagnation of the political field and
society of Armenia is not determined by the thought that everything is
predetermined but that everything is predetermined without intrigues.

In this sense, if the scenario of the forthcoming election does not
change, it may be interestingly significant. For the first time in
the history of Armenia, we have the opportunity to listen to programs
and not to follow intrigues. Though many people think listening to
programs is a waste of time, the upcoming election campaign will be
focused on programs.

Of course, the field remains irrational to some extent, namely due
to the presence of Vardan Sedrakyan’s epic and Raffi Hovannisian’s
funny linguistic innovations. On the other hand, there is pressure of
“heavyweights” who have been left out and who treat extra-governmental
activism as pro-governmental actions or put forth the thesis that it
is clear that Serzh Sargsyan will win so it is meaningless to run in
this election.

However, this approach is very primitive in terms of rational
politics because if guided by this idea there should always be
only one candidate. After all, the aim of elections is victory but
promotion of one’s political claim is no less important, including
for a future victory. The most important thing is the process of
change of the ongoing political perception in the public – programs
and rationality instead of intrigues and apocalyptic scenarios.

In this sense, the upcoming presidential elections may seem and
interpreted as boring. In terms of some political perceptions, the
elections are really boring but this is the main difference of the
upcoming election from the previous ones.
