PARENTS OF SOLDIERS HOLD A PROTEST ACTION IN FRONT OF THE PRESIDENTIAL RESIDENCE

A group of the parents of soldiers have started an action of protest
in front of the presidential residence.

They demand that the authorities take decisive steps to improve the
situation in the army. They say that the authorities do nothing to
punish those guilty of harassment in the army.

One of the parents said that she has always trusted the Republican
Party of Armenia, but it has betrayed her. “It would be better if my
son was killed by the enemy rather than as a result of violence by his
comrades-in-arms. We do not want our sons to be killed by cannibals,”
she said.

The protesters demand that the authorities thoroughly investigate all
the deaths in the army. They are convinced that Military Prosecutor
Gevork Kostanyan is not mature enough to be able to solve this problem.

The protesters want to meet with the President of Armenia, but the
police are standing in their way.

To remind, several accidents have taken place in the Armenian army in
the last five days, including three suicides by 19-year-old Vladimir
Asatryan and Yuri Nersisyan and 21-year-old Aram Melkonyan.

“This list is growing, and we must do something to stop this,” the
protesters say.

‘THE MIDDLE EAST IS OSCILLATING BETWEEN FEAR AND HOPE, UNCERTAINTY AND
PROMISE’
Stated Aram I at the University of California, Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES, ANTELIAS – On Saturday 15 October His Holiness Aram I spoke at
the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) on the topic, “The future
of Christianity in the Middle East.” The presentation was attended by
faculty members, students, representatives of local communities and
organizations and the public at large.

Catholicos Aram I stated that regime change will have a positive impact on
the lives of Christians only when democratic states are established and the
rights of Christian communities are fully recognized and respected.
Otherwise, he continued, “Christians will continue to emigrate.”

In the second part of his speech, His Holiness spoke about the challenges
faced by the churches in the region. He stated that they must redefine their
self-understanding and reassess their witness in this region which is in
turmoil and transition because the church is a God-given vocation and not
simply an institution.

After sharing his view on the way the churches in the Middle East should
respond, Catholicos Aram I concluded: “Christians in the West should not
consider the churches of the Middle East as the remnants of Christian
history or mission lands, but as genuine partners; they should assist them
to remain in the Middle East, in their own lands. Judaism, Christianity, and
Islam must assume their prophetic roles at this critical moment of history,
and endeavor together to build a culture of life which promotes reconciled
diversities and a quality of life sustained by dignity, freedom, justice and
peace, as well as by tolerance and mutual trust. Especially at this time,
when the region is oscillating between uncertainty and promise, fear and
hope, the three monotheistic religions are called to respond to this
challenge.”

Manifestation Anti-Sarkozy En Turquie

MANIFESTATION ANTI-SARKOZY EN TURQUIE

TF1.fr, France
14 oct 2011

PanARMENIAN.Net – Human rights activist, journalist and translator
Suzan Zengin, who was kept under arrest for nearly two years despite
her chronic health problems, died on October 12 due to her worsening
medical condition after she was released on June 14, Hurriyet Daily
News reported.

“We feel the deep agony of having lost Suzan Zengin. We send our
condolences to her family, acquaintances and her journalist friends,”
read a written statement issued by the Solidarity with Arrested
Journalists Platform (TGDP) following her death.

Zengin received proper treatment after she was released on June 14
this year, but she did not make it through a surgery because her
ailment was too advanced.

Zengin’s funeral ceremony will be held today in Istanbul’s Tuzla
Aydınlı Cemevi, the TGDP announced.

Zengin was arrested on Aug. 29, 2009 while working at the Worker Farmer
Journal and in the Umut Publishing House’s office in Istanbul’s Kartal
district. Claims that she was not receiving periodic treatment while
under arrest caused uproar among press organizations.
