Syriac League: Erdogan apology to Kurds fell short

November 26, 2011 01:39 AM The Daily Star
BEIRUT: The Turkish prime minister of did well to apologize to his
country’s Kurdish population earlier this week but the move didn’t go
far enough, according to the Syriac League.

In a statement, the league said that while the announcement by Turkish
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan earlier this week was a cry of
conscience, `even if late,’ the group said that such national
reconciliations should not be selective. Erdogan apologized Wednesday
for a bombing and strafing campaign that killed around 14,000 Kurds in
the 1930s.

The league wants Erdogan to address similar apologies to Syriacs and Armenians.

Father Of Heroes Is Homeless

FATHER OF HEROES IS HOMELESS

yerkir.am
13:02 – 26.11.2011

Hrachik Hovhannisyan from Vanadzor has granted his 2 sons to the
motherland. His first son left to the battle field leaving his two
sons behind. In 1992 he fell in Lachin.

His second son Hounan also was devoted to the military work. It was
in peaceful years that he started working as a military serviceman
ignoring his parents’ pleas.

He was in Karvachar first then moved to Ijevan. The opponent’s bullet
had hit him at the front. The injury of the first son’s death wasn’t
cured yet when they received the news of the second son’s death.

It was 2005. The brothers are now together forever. The only comfort
for the parents is the cemetery of heroes in Vanadzor.

The family of the lost heroes lives in a loaned house now and talking
about the social situation is in vain. Grandfather Hrachik had been
in the ministry of defense and doesn’t believe the promises given to
him by the minister that they will have a new home.

The Dignity Of Karabakh People

THE DIGNITY OF KARABAKH PEOPLE
Naira Hayrumyan

Story from Lragir.am News:

Published: 11:33:39 – 26/11/2011

Armenia Fund must restore dignity which it has replaced by beggary,
fake patriotism and compassion. The people in Karabakh who watch the
telethon videos about their own life say it is not quite pleasant to
watch them. Yes, there is a problem of water supply in Karabakh but why
should it necessarily be presented as if they have never seen water,
they take a shower once a month, and the lands are dry and infertile,
and Karabakh is unable to sustain itself?

Do the organizers of the telethon care about the opinion of Karabakh
on these videos? Do the people of Karabakh agree to be introduced
to the world in this way, with their hand stretched out, unwashed
and uncombed? Hardly so! I know a lot of people in Karabakh who are
ashamed of these videos and hurry switch the TV channel.

Karabakh really needs water supply, in Stepanakert the citizens have
only 2 hours of running water but people do take care of their hygiene,
and their city is one of the cleanest cities in the world.

Water is a more urgent problem in villages, and instead of showing
people who are surprised to see water running from the faucet it
would be better to see a young entrepreneur who worked his land with
the help of the fund, sold the crops he harvested and renovated his
house and road with that money.

The people of Karabakh are proud people, they never beg for anything,
they live on their own income, small or big, and they never complain.

However, thanks to the “policy” of the recent years, the image of a
begging person is publicized in the Armenian world, who is deprived
of dignity and whom you do not even want to help because he takes a
bath only once a week.

The problem of water supply could be solved should the money be spent
on actual work rather than unnecessary universal events. For instance,
if the water was not used to irrigate the lands of people whose names
are known to everyone in Karabakh.

Most importantly, dignity may become a convertible category. The
people of Karabakh may announce that they disagree to being shown
in this light and they can feed themselves but there are problems
which require major investments. And the people of Karabakh will be
happy if the Diaspora makes these investments with the expectation
of getting profit.

In that case, instead of the feeling of pity the Diaspora will become
a partner and will preserve both its honor and the dignity of the
people of Karabakh.

GORAN LENNMARKER: “IT IS TIME FOR RESOLUTION OF NAGORNO KARABAKH CONFLICT” – INTERVIEW

APA
Nov 25 2011
Azerbaijan

“First of all that it is question of the public opinion in Azerbaijan
and in Armenia to have a debate about acceptance of the solution that
is good for people of the both countries”

Stockholm. M. Guliyeva – APA. APA’s interview with former president
of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, chairman of the Jarl Hjalmarson
Foundation Goran Lennmarker

– How do you estimate the current situation around the settlement of
the Nagorno Karabakh conflict?

– First of all, I think that it is time for resolution of Nagorno
Karabakh conflict. Three things I would like to underline. First
of all that it is question of the public opinion in Azerbaijan and
in Armenia to have a debate about acceptance of the solution that is
good for people of the both countries, because the negotiation process
must be accepted by the people of Azerbaijan and also by the people
of Armenia. Otherwise there will be no solution and if there is no
solution the status quo will be gone and a lot of people will suffer.

In Azerbaijan 700.000 up to one million people that should have the
right to go back to their property, to visit the graves. Even perhaps
if the most will stay in Baku, they should have the get back their
property, their ancient home because it is their fundamental right.

And I think that it is time in Azerbaijan to have a debate on that.

Because there is a possibility for the solution that is not only for
refugees who wish to come back. Another thing from the outside that
Europe could do more is that I think to give membership perspective
to Azerbaijan and Armenia and Georgia in the European Union. Then
it is up to Azerbaijan if it wishes to use it, it is voluntarily and
you must wish it yourself, but there is should be a perspective for
the European membership and insertion to reach a solution.

– Can Europe propose anything aside membership perspective?

– No, if there is should be a negotiated solution, it should be
depended on the negotiation process between the two countries. From
the outside we can help to support but the solution cannot be imposed
from the outside.

It must be negotiated. It must be a solution which is accepted by the
both sides, in other words, the compromise. Nobody will be 100% happy
because it is the nature of it. I think that the discussion between
Armenia and Turkey could be helpful, and here I have a different
opinion with the leadership of Azerbaijan. Because I think that
could help the solution. If they could get through their complicated
history in the whole manner, I think that could be a good thing for
Nagorno-Karabakh. That could help for the solution, because this is
the European experience. We all have in a war, for example Sweden had
12 wars with Denmark, 9 wars with Russia and many wars with Poland
and Germany. This is a typical European history of the conflicts,
and we have to learn to live together with the bothers that are very
debatable and discussed.

What about Russian role in this conflict

We should have Russia there as a part of the Minsk Group because
that is important. The most important thing is that we could get the
solution to the Nagorno Karabakh which will help to the whole Caucasus
region. Perhaps also help Russia to have more Russian policy towards
its own part of Caucasus, I mean the north part of Caucasus which
from the Russian point of view is a big problem.

Armenia displays its unwillingness to make progress in the Karabakh
peace settlement, Azeri Deputy Foreign Minister Araz Azimov told
reporters in Baku on Thursday.

“Instead of responding to the constructive proposals of Azerbaijan,
Armenia takes a different path and uses the occupied Azeri lands for
mercenary goals. It thus displays unwillingness to foster the peace
process,” he said.

Azerbaijan does not expect anything new from the regional visit of
the OSCE Minsk Group cochairman to begin on November 28, he said.
