ANKARA. – During the Turkish parliament’s hearings on the proposal
for fight against the financing of terrorism, the Kurdish “Peace and
Democracy Party” (BDP) MP Sirri Sureyya Onder reflected on the court
ruling on the case of Hrant Dink, the founder and former chief editor
of Istanbul’s Agos Armenian weekly, who was killed in 2007.

“The person [Erhan Tuncel] who was punished in the trial was punished
for placing a bomb in a hamburger-selling company [McDonald’s]. In
Turkey, the life of an Armenian citizen is not as important as an
American company that sells hamburgers. You cannot touch a hamburger
seller, but you can kill an Armenian,” Sirri Sureyya Onder said,
Turkish Haberx news agency informs.

To note, Erhan Tuncel was found not guilty of prompting Dink’s
murder, and, instead, he was sentenced to 10 years and 6 months for
an explosion in a McDonald’s store. But taking into account that
Tuncel was already incarcerated for that amount of time, the court
had ruled his release.

One of the largest Turkish-American organizations, the Turkish
Coalition of America (TCA), has sent letters to News Corporation
Chairman Rupert Murdoch and News Corporation-owned Fox News Chairman
Roger Ailes to make known its concern regarding anti-Turkey sentiments
voiced on Fox News during the Jan. 17 Republican presidential debate.

The letters were prompted by media reports that Murdoch’s News
Corporation is considering a bid to buy one of Turkey’s biggest media
groups, which owns the Sabah daily and popular TV station ATV. TCA
President G. Lincoln McCurdy explained his concerns in the letters
sent to both Murdoch and Ailes.

He stated that during the Fox News-hosted Republican Presidential
Primary Debate in South Carolina on Jan. 17, “Fox News’ anchor
Bret Baier recited a litany of out-of-context statistics arranged to
portray Turkey in the worst possible light and then suggested to Texas
Governor Rick Perry that such statistics might indicate that Turkey,
one of the United States’ most robust NATO allies, no longer deserved
to be a member of NATO.”

“Led on by this outrageous question, Governor Perry responded in a
manner that nearly caused an international incident, accusing Turkey’s
democratically elected government of acting like ‘Islamic terrorists’
and suggesting that Turkey should be expelled from NATO,” he added.

McCurdy said taken together, the moderator’s question and the
candidate’s response shocked and alarmed Turkish-Americans and the
people of Turkey. “Though this was a single broadcast, as you well
know, in this global and interconnected world, everyone is listening.

The negative impact of this single broadcast, therefore, should not
be underestimated,” he continued.

The letters concluded that “taking into account the uproar the debate
caused among Turkish-Americans and throughout Turkish society,
as well as News Corporation’s interests in doing business in
Turkey, TCA requested meetings with senior representatives of both
organizations so that it could personally convey its concerns, talk
about issues related to Turkey and establish a dialogue between the
Turkish-American community and Fox News to prevent future incidents
which do not benefit anyone.”

” a dit Arev Cebeci.

pratique ” a dit Turgut Alaca.

ISTANBUL: FM Readies For Syria, French Bill Talks In US

FM READIES FOR SYRIA, FRENCH BILL TALKS IN US

Turkey

Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu will have talks with U.S. Secretary
of State Hillary Clinton in his work visit to Washington between Feb.
8 and 13.

Recent developments in the region including Arab League and United
Nations Security Council initiatives on Syria, political tension in
Iraq and United States sanctions against Iran are expected to be high
on the talk agenda.

He will also seek to ensure Congress does not take up any move on
the Armenian genocide allegations issue ahead of April 24, diplomatic
sources said.

Armenian-Americans traditionally urge U.S. presidents and Congress
to officially recognize World War I-era deaths of their kinsmen in
the Ottoman Empire as “genocide” around this time of year.

Each year a bill related to the issue arrives in Congress, but
this year Turkey is expected to face a greater challenge due to the
approaching elections in the U.S. During his visit Davutoglu will also
deliver a speech at the American Turkish Council (ATC) and participate
in a meeting at the Center for Strategic and International Studies
(CSIS). The Turkish foreign minister and Clinton are also expected
to meet at the Munich Conference this week.

Boyer vows to fight to end ANKARA – Hurriyet Daily News

French lawmaker Valerie Boyer, architect of the controversial
bill criminalizing denial of Armenian “genocide,” expressed her
disappointment the bill was taken to the Constitutional Council and
said she will fight to the end for this cause.

“Even if this is not a surprise, I am disappointed to see that some
parliamentarians prefer legalism to humanism,” Boyer, from the ranks of
the ruling Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) party, said in a Facebook
post. “Although I respect their decision, since it is their right,
I share the pain of the families that the memory of the victims is
once again proven by this procedure. For me, the pressure exerted
by a foreign state denial should not outweigh a universal cause,
on the defense of human rights and the size of France,” she said.

“Anyway, I remained convinced that it is not admissible on French
territory that the memory of the victims of genocides recognized
by France is not protected in the same way! It is unequal treatment
and cruel perfectly unacceptable discrimination against which I will
fight to the end,” the parliamentary member said.

gorge.”

BAKU: Law On "Armenian Genocide" Adopted By French Senate Is Inappro

LAW ON “ARMENIAN GENOCIDE” ADOPTED BY FRENCH SENATE IS INAPPROPRIATE AND UNNECESSARY

Azerbaijan

Law on so-called “Armenian genocide” adopted by French Senate is
inappropriate and unnecessary is said in response of deputy chairman
of the French Senate, Jean-Claude Carle to the letter of the Youth
Union of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party (NAP).

“French Parliament can’t deal with the evaluation of the history, it
is a deal of commission of historians and I consider that it would
be appropriate to create the international group of historians. I
hadn’t participated in voting on the inappropriate and unnecessary
draft law.” Carle noted.

Carle said, current legislation and constitutional basis gives an
opportunity to punish the negationists.

Members of NAP Youth Union sent a letter to Jean-Claude Carle which
purpose is to protest against the adoption of draft law criminalizing
the denial of “Armenian genocide” and to call the French Senate not
to repeat mistake and injustice of the parliament’s lower chamber.

“Armenian Diaspora and the State, realizing that the investigation
and study of historical documents together with Turkey will not
be able to substantiate their claims, are opposed to research and
international debate on this issue. In this case, the adoption of the
bill by the French Parliament without proved motives talks about the
biased position of the country,” the letter says.

BAKU: Azerbaijan Cannot Deprive France Of Co-Chairing In OSCE Minsk

AZERBAIJAN CANNOT DEPRIVE FRANCE OF CO-CHAIRING IN OSCE MINSK GROUP FOR CRIMINALIZING DENIAL OF ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

Azerbaijan Business Center
Feb 1 2012

Baku, Fineko/abc.az. At the opening of the spring session Milli
Majlis has had a discussion on the adoption of the law by the French
Parliament criminalizing denial of the “genocide” of Armenians in
the Ottoman Empire in 1915-17.

In the course of the discussion, parliament’s speaker Ogtay Asadov
said that although France had lost its moral right to participate in
the OSCE Minsk Group on settlement of Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict
over Nagorno Garabagh conflict, physically they would remain in the
Group, and we cannot still do anything.

“We must examine the legal side of this issue, but cannot do anything.

However, Azerbaijan will do everything necessary to protect the
interests of Turkey and Azerbaijan,” the speaker stated.

The proposal to deprive France of participation in the Minsk Group
was made by MP Ganira Pashayeva, in case France still passes a law
criminalizing denial of the “genocide” of Armenians.

ISTANBUL: How Many Angels Can Dance On The Head Of A Pin?

HOW MANY ANGELS CAN DANCE ON THE HEAD OF A PIN?
by Mouhanad Halwani*

Today’s Zaman
Feb 1 2012
Turkey

This quintessential question consumed Byzantines in the mid-15th
century — right at the peak of the Turkish blitzkrieg.

While Turkish forces pounded the walls of Constantinople (with the
largest cannons known to mankind back then), monks quibbled crossly
about this complex conundrum, oblivious to the winds of change that
were sweeping across their empire.

Today, in a world existentially threatened by a worldwide economic
collapse, currency devaluation, global warming and rogue states making
away with nuclear weapons, one nation is going all Byzantine. In
a throwback to the good old days, France contemplates codifying
legislation that renders the “Armenian genocide” sacrosanct. Any
denial, debate or critical thinking incongruent with the government’s
narrative can land you one year in jail and a hefty fine of 45,000
euros. So, if you’re like historian Dr. Bernard Lewis, who posits that
“there is no evidence of a decision to massacre [Armenians]. On the
contrary, there is considerable evidence of attempt [sic] to prevent
it.” You’d better not be in France while expressing such views.

Come to think of it, it’s quite ironic. France, a country that prides
itself as the stalwart champion of equality, liberty and fraternity
comes up with a law that claws at two of its founding principles in
one fell swoop. In one bold — yet dubious — coup de maître, Paris
Match becomes Pravda.

Now I will not linger in this article on how unwise it would be for
a country to forsake the principles that made it great. Nor will I
extrapolate the dangers of curbing free speech and exercising double
standards, which amounts to taking steps down a slippery slope that
leads to authoritarianism and fascism. As for the history of the
subject matter, I will leave that to well-grounded historians to
discuss in the halls of academia as opposed to fickle politicians to
assert in the House of Commons.

This brings me to the crux of this article, which is about the nature
of France’s “Armenian genocide” legislation. History, in this case,
is not about finding the truth or granting justice to any of the
victims of World War I. Instead, history is used — nay, abused —
as a tool of foreign policy. Through highly selective and prejudicial
interpretation, history is weaponized, and the gestalt of Turkey
(its culture, its history and even its people) are branded with the
mark of Cain.

Why Turkey? Why now?

Who knows? Maybe the grounds for not admitting Turkey into the EU
have become too thin. After all, while the so-called “PIIGS states”
of the EU (Portugal, Italy, Ireland, Greece and Spain) have exposed
themselves as stagnant entities mired in ineptitude, mismanagement
and inertness, Turkey has time and again distinguished itself in the
last decade as a dynamic political player and an economic powerhouse.

Running out of solid reasons to turn down Turkey’s candidacy for
the EU club, trumped up charges are hence dug up to cast Turkey in
a negative light.

And therein lies the rub. It is one thing to criticize a country’s
economic performance or social laws. It is another to demonize an
entire people based on the subjective interpretation of a series of
events that happened a century ago.

History should be used to bring people together — to highlight how
much we all share. History should strive to build bridges between
people, not walls. It should discuss rather than denounce. Europe
tried it the other way and got oppressive colonialism, centuries of
incessant wars and two world wars in the last hundred years.

If this is not the universe telling the French to “take a hint”… I
don’t know what is.

ANKARA: PM Erdogan: France Needs To Break Free Of This Middle Ages M

PM ERDOGAN: FRANCE NEEDS TO BREAK FREE OF THIS MIDDLE AGES MENTALITY

Sabah
Feb 1 2012
Turkey

Prime Minister Erdogan laid into France for its acceptance of the
Armenian bill. “The France of Sarkozy’s administration is based on
dogma, biases and delirium.”

Prime Minister Tayyip Erdoðan slammed France in his Address to the
Nation last night by delivering the following messages:

FRANCE IS HAUNTED BY THE MENTALITY OF THE MIDDLE AGES: “Unfortunately
a civilization that brags of being the pioneer of enlightenment is
now led by a dark Middle Ages mentality. The France, which once aimed
to form a union in order to prevent conflict in Europe following the
Second World War, today speaks a language of discrimination, racism
and conflict. The France of the Age of Enlightenment was the center
of intellectualism, however the France of Sarkozy’s administration
is based on dogma, biases and delirium.”

STEPPING ON EUROPEAN VALUES: “We have issued the necessary threats to
France. With the approaching election, Sarkozy seems to have no problem
stepping on European values all for the sake of a few thousand votes
by Devshirmeh.” Erdoðan’s reference is to the Christians conscripted
to join the janissaries during the Ottoman Empire.

“I have said it before; this bill that was accepted by the French
National Assembly and Senate is non existent for us. By attempting to
rewrite history in the parliament, Sarkozy’s France is forcing open a
door to a very dangerous era. Therefore, as Turkey, in order to stop
watering this poisonous vine sprouting in France, we are asking our
French comrades and the French public to raise their voices.”

SAY ‘NO’ TO THIS ANIMOSITY AGAINST TURKEY: “I believe that the
conventional wisdom inherent in France will say stop to this trend
of racism and discrimination led by Sarkozy and to the animosity
towards Turkey. Turkey is a great country and will act in accordance
to this greatness. It will take on stances according to the course
of developments and we will implement sanctions in stages.”
