USC Institute of Armenian Studies Brings Studio to LA in Mobile Truck

USC Institute of Armenian Studies #MyArmenianStory Mobile Truck flyer

LOS ANGELES—With a mobile studio in a retrofitted food truck, USC Institute of Armenian Studies is traveling throughout Southern California to encourage and invite people to record their life stories.

#MyArmenianStory is a crowd-sourced oral history project that has thus far gathered nearly 100 interviews from around the world. The purpose of the project is to record, gather, and document individual stories and reconstitute them as part of the national story. The method is simple: enlist anyone who is willing to interview and/or be interviewed to discover and record family stories and more. Everyone’s story is relevant, and together, they all make up the Armenian Story.

The Armenian experience of the 20th and 21st centuries is ingrained in the memories of the generations who lived it – California Armenians who lived in Boyle Heights, Hollywood and Pasadena, Soviet citizens who lived to see Armenian independence, and those caught in the Lebanese Civil War or the Iranian Revolution, refugees from Syria and Iraq, and so many others. These are Armenian stories that have individual value to families, but collectively, are essential history sources for scholars and creatives.

The Los Angeles County and the cities of Los Angeles, Glendale, and Pasadena celebrate Armenian heritage during the month of April and this is an opportunity to partner with city and community organizations to commemorate and remember in a way that is meaningful and lasting.

The mobile studio, housed in a bright taco truck in University of Souther California colors, can be found throughout Southern California. Individuals wanting to interview and be interviewed will be seated inside the truck, given guidelines and questions, and their conversation will be recorded.

For those interested in just being interviewed or would like to volunteer to do the interviewing, the Institute staff is ready to make a match. The testimony will be made available to the participants. And, anyone can receive detailed information and instructions on how to conduct interviews at home with loved ones, in person or remotely.

The ambition is to collect as many stories as possible for future reference as a primary source for scholars and artists interested in the global Armenian experience.

The recordings will be archived at USC Digital Libraries, and in other regional and global collections, thus accessible to researchers around the world.

While the mobile #MyArmenianStory Mobile Studio will travel for one month, the project as a whole will continue. Armenians around the world are encouraged to participate in this important initiative by interviewing and sharing their stories with the Institute. Questionnaires, guidelines and all needed information is available in English, French, Spanish and Russian, as well as Eastern and Western Armenian.

Established in 2005, the USC Institute of Armenian Studies supports multidisciplinary scholarship to re-define, explore and study the complex issues that make up the contemporary Armenian experience—from post-genocide to the developing Republic of Armenia to the evolving diaspora. The institute encourages research, publications and public service, and promotes links among the global academic and Armenian communities.

The number of the wounded is still being clarified, but the Defense Army said earlier that five servicemen were injured in skirmishes overnight.

As of 2pm, the situation in the eastern section of the contact line remains “extremely tense”, the Defense Army said.

On Thursday, Azerbaijan used drones to launch an offensive against Nagorno-Karabakh, capturing a village and positions nearby and injuring at least five Armenian soldier. It was reported on Friday, however, that lengthy negotiations of the Russian peacekeeping troops have not yielded significant results, and the Azeris have not returned to the starting positions.

Artsakh people to international community: We exist and we want peace for our children on our own land

ArmInfo.Protests were held in Yerevan and Stepanakert in connection with the inhumane actions of Azerbaijan against the civilian population of Nagorno-Karabakh.

So, today, on March 24, children and women gathered in front of the  children’s hospital in Stepanakert, who protested in connection with  the inhumane actions of Azerbaijan, which has been terrorizing the  civilian population since March 8, by obstructing the gas supply to  Nagorno-Karabakh.

“Dear friends, what is happening now in Artsakh can only be called a  humanitarian catastrophe. Deliberate damage and blocking with illegal  installation of a gas pipeline valve on harsh, snowy days, leaving  the civilian population without heat, is an act of terrorism. If not  us, ordinary citizens, then who instead of us will inform the world  about how the Azerbaijani authorities are mocking the people of  Artsakh? We have gathered here and are holding a peaceful rally for  the right to life in our own home. We want to show the world with  this protest action that we exist and we want peace for our children  in own land,” the participants of the rally said.

The participants of the peaceful rally also recalled that the  population of Artsakh has the same rights as the population of other  states, which is stated in the UN Charter. In this vein, an appeal  was made to the international community to take steps to curb the  aggressive actions of Azerbaijan.

At the same time, a similar action was held in Yerevan in front of  the UN office building. The protesters demanded that the UN stop the  policy of double standards and respond to the humanitarian crisis in  Artsakh, caused by the fact that Azerbaijan cut off the gas supply to  Nagorno-Karabakh.  The protesters came with banners “Warm the  children of Artsakh”, “Right to a safe life”, “Aliyev terrorist”,  etc

Ararat Mirzoyan: OSCE Minsk Group conveyed Armenia`s proposals on a peace agreement to the Azerbaijani side

ArmInfo.The 5 principles presented by Azerbaijan on the peace treaty with Armenia do not contain anything unacceptable for Armenia. Minister of Foreign  Affairs of Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan stated, answering the questions of  the parliamentarians from the rostrum of the National Assembly.

In this regard, he stressed that these proposals were supplemented by  Armenia, since the provisions of the Azerbaijani side did not affect  all important issues on the bilateral agenda, and were submitted to  the OSCE Minsk Group. According to Ararat Mirzoyan, the OSCE Minsk  Group has already sent an amended version of the proposals to  Azerbaijan. Speaking about the announced conditions of the Armenian  side, Mirzoyan stressed that the guarantee of the rights and status  of Artsakh is fundamental.

At the same time, the minister drew attention to the fact that  military operations in Ukraine complicated the work of the OSCE Minsk  Group. However, he considered it encouraging that the international  community continues to see the solution of the Artsakh issue within  the framework of the mandate of the OSCE Minsk Group.

“We continue to make efforts to organize discussions, including on  the principles proposed by Armenia for signing a peace treaty with  Azerbaijan,” he said.

The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry published proposals of 5 points sent  to Yerevan, which are the principles of a peace treaty with Armenia.  This includes, in particular, the following proposals:

– mutual recognition by states of sovereignty, territorial integrity,  inviolability of state borders and political independence of each  other;

– mutual confirmation by states of the absence of territorial claims  to each other and their acceptance of a legal obligation not to make  such claims in the future;

– refrain from threatening each other’s security in international  relations, using threats and force against political independence and  territorial integrity, as well as other circumstances that do not  correspond to the purposes of the UN Charter;

– delimitation and demarcation of the state border, establishment of  diplomatic relations;

– opening transport links and communications, establishing other  relevant communications and cooperation in other areas of mutual  interest.” The opposition criticized these actions of the Armenian  Foreign Ministry, recalling that the OSCE Minsk Group does not have a  mandate to negotiate the normalization of Armenian-Azerbaijani  bilateral relations.

Diversity Win! 68-Year-Old Armenian-American To Take On Christian Slater’s Role In INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE Reboot

BY PHIL NOBILE JR. · @PHILNOBILEJR · MARCH 18, 2022, 7:28 AM PDT

There’s an entire generation out there who might only know Eric Bogosian from Succession or Billions, or as the menacing bookie/brother-in-law Arno from Uncuh Jaaaaaaaamz. He’s great in all these recent roles, but I implore you to dig up Oliver Stone’s Talk Radio, or some of Bogosian’s one-man shows from the 1980s. Bogosian has been an electric presence for decades, and his involvement in any project is cause for excitement.

Today’s cause for excitement is the news that he’s joining the cast of AMC’s Interview with the Vampire reboot, and he’s playing Daniel Molloy, the conductor of the eponymous q&a. In 1994, that role was filled by Christian Slater, who’d stepped in for the recently deceased River Phoenix. At roughly 44 years older than Slater was when he played the role, Bogosian’s age is very much a factor, according to Variety. Molloy is described as “an investigative journalist nearing the end of his career who’s given a second chance at the interview of a lifetime.” It would have been so easy to pop some CW hottie in that role as it was originally written (author Anne Rice simply called him “the boy” in the novel). Love this pivot; love when a horror property recognizes that we share the earth with multiple generations!

It’s no secret that we at Fango are pro-mature people, and showrunner Rolin Jones seems to get it as well: “I count Eric Bogosian as one of the half dozen artists who made me want to do this for a career. He is, for me, the dented car fender of the American Soul and I can think of no better actor/writer alive to play this role. I’m in total frothing geek mode about his casting.”

Same, buddy.

The first season of Interview with the Vampire will debut on AMC later this year.

Armenia overhauls criminal legislation aligning it with ECHR judgments

Council of Europe

By its decision of 9 March in the Virabyan group of cases the Committee of Ministers welcomed the adoption by Armenia in 2021 of the new Criminal Code and Code of Criminal Procedure which will enter into force in July this year.

This new legislation addresses multiple issues raised by ECHR judgments in cases concerning notably torture in law enforcement and unlawful detention. It eliminates statutes of limitation for torture, provides for additional procedural guarantees against ill-treatment and unlawful detention, as well as for fair trial safeguards.

The importance of rapid adoption of this legislation had been highlighted by the Committee of Ministers on several occasions in its decisions related to the Mushegh SaghatelyanVirabyan and Muradyan groups of cases. The Council of Europe supported the preparation of the new codes with legal expertise in order for them to be aligned with the ECHR standards.

Marianna Mkrtchyan

ArmInfo.The Azerbaijani troops have until now made four incursions into Armenia’s territory, Armenia’s former human rights defender Arman Tatoyan.

According to him, the Azerbaijani troops have made incursions into  the following Armenian territories: the village of Nerqin Khand,  Syunik region, in March, 2022; the Vardenis community, Gegharkunik  region, in May 2021; Goris, Syunik region, May 2021; the borderland  near the village of Tsav, Syunik region, October, 2020.

“We must not forget the incursion into the part of the Tsav and take  it into account in all the actions. The Azerbaijani armed forces’  illegal presence on he Goris-Kapan and Kapan-Chakaten roads  (November- December, 2020), as well as illegal blocking of the roads  (since November 2021).

“We must not forget that since November 2020 Azerbaijani troops have  been present in the vicinities of Armenian villages, and often in the  lands and houses Armenian citizens have legally owned since the  Soviet times, as well as in the communal lands and houses,” Mr  Tatoyan said.
