Erdogan’s Justice And Development Party’s Popularity Increases In Tu

ERDOGHAN’S JUSTICE AND DEVELOPMENT PARTY’S POPULARITY INCREASES IN TURKEY
By Hakob Chakrian

AZG Armenian Daily
06/06/2007

It’s a pledge of success in the coming parliamentary elections
in Turkey

According to the Gallup poll of Seljuk University in Konya Erdoghan’s
Justice and Development party’s popularity increases in Turkey. The
Gallup poll was conducted in 40 states of Turkey, among 10.951 people.

As the presidential elections of Turkey are to hold on June 22 together
with the premature parliamentary elections, the Gallup poll contains
statistics of both of them.

According to "Vatan" daily 70 % of questioned agreed to elect the
president by popular vote, 22,5 % found appropriate for "Mejlis"
to elect the President, and 6,8 % were not oriented.

36.8 % of questioned gave preference to Erdoghan’s Justice and
Development party (AKP), 21 % – to the Republican People’s party
(CHP), 10,1 % to the alliance of Democrat Party formerly the True
Path Party and Motherland Party (ANAVATAN)" and 10,1% to Nationalist
Movement Party (MHP).

Abdullah Gul’s nomination as candidate for the presidency and
as a result of it the crisis in Turkey contribute to Justice and
Development party’s increasing popularity and recruitment of new
members, i.e. on May 30 ten popular political figures recruited to
the party, one of them was the former General Secretary of Republican
People’s party. And the efforts of President Sezer to unite the
parties of the same ideological trend became in vain.

The elections in Turkey gained the former US Ambassador in Turkey
Morton Abramovich’s attraction and he published his article titled
"The secular part of Turkey is divided up".

Though Abramovich warned about the results of the interference of
the army, which would end the process of the membership of Turkey to
European Union and would deepen the public polarization in Turkey,
he, anyhow, for the seculars considered preferable the army but not
Erdoghan’s party. "Will the army let Justice and Development party
control the parliament and elect a president in Turkey?"

With this equivocal sentence Abramovich shows the attitudes of the
Jewish institutions of USA and "The New Conservatives" of Israel. The
Department of State also prefers Turkish army, as McCormack has
announced that the army of Turkey is the US ally.

Time will show if it is an invitation card to Turkish Army or not.

But Abramovich’s concern about the probable victory of Erdoghan’s
Justice and Development party confirm the probability of it.

ANCA Communications Director Reconnects with a Decade of ANCA Interns

— Evening with Regional and Local Leaders Focuses
on ANCA’s Commitment to Expanding Youth Advocacy

Los Angeles, CA – Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA)
Communications Director Elizabeth Chouldjian joined with regional and local
leaders and former ANCA Interns for an evening celebrating over two decades
of Leo Sarkisian Internship Program successes.

During an evening gathering, hosted by community activists and former ANCA
intern John and Pattyl Kasparian, Chouldjian provided an executive summary
of the ANCA’s work in support of U.S. foreign aid to Armenia, the Armenian
Genocide resolution and efforts to promote security issues in
Nagorno-Karabagh. She placed special focus on the key role that the ANCA
Leo Sarkisian Internship Program and the expanded Capital Gateway Program
play in ensuring increased youth participation in the American political
process.

"As a former ANCA intern in 1991, it was a pleasure catching up with Leo
Sarkisian interns from throughout the Southern California area," stated
Chouldjian, who directed the Washington component of the internship program
for some 10 years. "Whether serving in our Regional Board or active with
our local chapters, the internship program has been a critical factor in
training the Armenian American political advocates of tomorrow."

Now in its 23rd year, the Leo Sarkisian Summer Internship has brought
together interns from across the nation and Canada, providing them an
opportunity to hone their grassroots activism skills by attending seminars,
participating in an intensive lecture series and working on specifically
designated projects. The eight-week program is geared to provide proven
student leaders with the skills they need to effectively advance Armenian
American concerns in their hometowns and campuses around the country.

"After returning from Washington, DC in 2000, I felt reenergized and ready
to hit the ground running with our local efforts," stated former Leo
Sarkisian Intern Sevana Zetlian. "My experience in Washington provided me
with the right tools and also helped me realized that what we are doing
locally makes an enormous difference in the Armenian Cause," she added.

The Leo Sarkisian Internship Program is an integral part of the ANCA Capital
Gateway Program, which provides Armenian Americans greater opportunities to
explore careers on Capitol Hill, in the U.S. Foreign Service and key
Washington, DC foreign policy think tanks. Now reaching the end of its
fourth year, the year-round program is designed to help university students
and graduates find internships and permanent positions in Congressional
offices, government agencies and policy groups by providing temporary
housing and assistance in transitioning from student to professional. To
date, the ANCA Capital Gateway Program has placed over 40 individuals in
jobs on Capitol Hill and in think tanks in the nation’s capital.

"My invaluable experience as a Leo Sarkisian intern equipped me with the
knowledge and experience needed to be active within my community and to
serve Cong. Pallone on Capitol Hill. I will always be grateful to Elizabeth
and the ANCA for providing me with the tools necessary to be successful and
make a difference," stated Angineh Babooian.

The Capital Gateway Program has been funded through the generosity of the
Cafesdjian Family Foundation, the Hovig Apo Saghdejian Fellowship, Armenian
American Veterans Post of Milford, Massachusetts (AAVO), longtime ANCA
benefactors Mr. and Mrs. Frank and Barbara Hekimian and Armenian American
activists from across the U.S.

The Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) is the largest and most
influential Armenian American grassroots political organization. Working in
coordination with a network of offices, chapters, and supporters throughout
the United States and affiliated organizations around the world, the ANCA
actively advances the concerns of the Armenian American community on a broad
range of issues.

IN DPA CHAIRMAN’S WORDS, KOCHARIAN WILL HAVE TO REFUSE TO SIGN ANY DOCUMENT ON PRINCIPLES OF NAGORNO KARABAKH SETTLEMENT

Noyan Tapan
Jun 04 2007

YEREVAN, JUNE 4, NOYAN TAPAN. At the meeting of Armenian and
Azerbaijani Presidents scheduled for June 10 Robert Kocharian will
have to refuse to sign any document on settlement principles, as this
will be "a mortal blow for the current authorities." Aram Sargsian,
Chairman of Democratic Party of Armenia, gave assurance at the June
4 press conference.

In his words, Ilham Aliyev had refused to sign any document on Nagorno
Karabakh settlement principles so far, while, this time the Armenian
side will have to assume the fault of protracting the negotiations.

In A. Sargsian’s words, so far the Armenian authorities through RA
President’s Spokesperson had named not serious I. Aliyev’s statements
about ceding all liberated territories, while they cannot say the
same about similar statements made by Minsk Group Co-chairs.

Touching upon statements of western observers about parliamentary
elections, A. Sargsian expressed apprehension that their being
positive is directly connected with the mechanism of Nagorno Karabakh
settlement. He considered possible an agreement reached between
U.S. and Armenia, according to which by placing peacekeepers in Nagorno
Karabakh conflict zone Armenia de jure remaining as member of CSTO,
de facto will join NATO.
