THERE IS A DEMAND OF DIRECTORS

In the Yerevan State Theater and Cinematography Institute a new profession
has been opened – sound directing. There are professions which are opened
once in 4-5 years as, according to the dean of the faculty Narineh Sargsyan,
there is no demand, like – choreography directing, cinematology, etc.

At present there are 27 applicants in the Institute. The majority has
applied to the directing faculty, for which they must take 3 exams – acting,
directing and Armenian.

We tried to find out from the applicants themselves why they have chosen the
profession. Elen Brutyan said she loves it. And Gohar Poqrikyan wanted to
become a theater director.

The entrance applications are accepted till July 15, and the exams will
start on July 28.

By the way, Narineh Sargsyan assured that the exam committee will not
announce its staff till the exam day.

1995. “Yes or no to the constitution”

1995. `YES OR NO TO THE CONSTITUTION’

`Yes or no’, a choice the RA citizen faced 10 years ago, no matter
consciously or not. This choice gave birth to the Constitution which is
called semi-presidential in the language of the Constitutional right, but is
in fact and super-presidential in its essence.

It is called semi-presidential as the main mandate had two subjects of power
– the President and the National Assembly. It is super-presidential as one
of them has super authorities. This system of governing is called `De Goll
regime’ after Charles De Goll, General of the French army who later became
President. It was under him that the present Constitution of France was
adopted.

In its classic interpretation it was neither super-presidential, as USD, nor
Parliamentary, as Great Britain. It was the synthesis of Monarchy with the
Republic in French interpretation.

The Constitutional reforms which are worked upon by the authorities of the
RA and the political power do not presuppose the change of the governing
system adopted by the 1995 Constitution.

Evangelists Activities in Turkey Warned
By Omer Sahin

Activities of Evangelists have caused discomfort in Turkey.

Turkish Foreign Ministry and the Intelligence Service (MIT) have
warned governors for not to hold any “official contacts” with German
Protestant Church that visited Southeastern Anatolia to “handle the
problems of refugees”. The Foreign Ministry also warned the Turkish
Parliament before a visit by the Church delegation to the Parliamentary
Justice Commission. A secret paper sent to the Parliament stated that
Evangelists support the terrorist organization Kurdistan Workers’
Party (PKK) and carry out activities to prevent Turkey to be included
into the European Union (EU) in case the so-called Armenian genocide
allegations are not accepted.

The German Evangelische Landeskirche Church had wanted to organize
a European Churches Conference in Istanbul between June 12 and 16,
2005, before its Turkey visit, but later gave up on this demand. An
11-member delegation of the Church came to Turkey on June 8-17.

Holding a series of talks, the delegation expressed that it wanted
to visit Van, Midyat town of Mardin and Diyarbakir before Ankara. The
Church also demanded to talk to Van’s gendarme commander and receive
information about Iranian and Iraqi refugees during their visit
to Van. This demand of Church and method of its visit have caused
discomfort. The Foreign Ministry gave directives to Berlin Embassy
to warn the Church for not acting in line with procedures for its
visit to Southeastern Anatolia. Governors of Eastern and Southeastern
Anatolia were also warned not to hold any official talks with the
Church delegation. The Berlin Embassy proposed the Church delegation
to call officials to Ankara and hold official contacts in Ankara.
Despite this warning, Evangelists visiting Turkey went to Van, Midyat,
and Diyarbakir and tried to obtain appointments through unofficial
ways, though they failed to have any contacts with province and
district governors.

The Evangelists came to Ankara later on and made contacts in Turkish
Parliament. The Turkish Foreign Ministry sent a “secret” note to the
Parliament before the church delegation’s visit. Informing the Human
Rights Commission, the Ministry dealt with this determination of the
Turkish National Intelligence Service (MIT): Evangelische Akademie
Bad Boll activating under the church’s control held meetings in 1997
and 1998 related to the lift of ban on the Kurdistan Workers’ Party
(PKK) in Germany and directly involved in anti-Turkish activities
like blocking access to EU in case of Turkey’s non-recognition of
the so-called Armenian genocide and support for Kongra-Gel.

REPORT ABOUT MASS MEDIA AND TERROR

The attempts of Azerbaijan to blame Armenia of terrorism on any occasion on
PACE are not new for anyone. The speeches of the Azeri delegation members do
not differ from one another independent of what is being discussed.

During today’s discussion «Mass Media and Terrorism» the Azeri delegate
Rafael Huseynov repeated without any change his speech which has sounded
many a time in PACE, «Armenia has occupied 20% of the territory of
Azerbaijan. For already 13 years our refugees are not able to return to
their houses. We have spoken in the PACE about Armenia being a terrorist
propagandizing it by the Armenia Mass Media». Mr. Huseynov blamed Armenia of
new calls for terror and demanded that PACE take proper steps to punish
Armenia.

In answer to the Azeri delegate, representative of the Armenian delegation
Artashes Geghamyan advised everyone to open several numbers of the newspaper
`Zerkalo’ and to read how the Azeri Mass Media propagandizes the killing of
Armenians, especially in Karabakh. He also reminded those present about the
cruel assassination of the Armenian officer Gourgen Margaryan by the Azeri
officer.

Drawing parallels between Azerbaijan and Turkey, Mr. Geghamyan referred to
the offer of the Turkish Prime Minister Erdoghan to investigate the events
in Turkey during the first World War and said that it is ridiculous, as
everyone knows what has happened in Turkey.

Shavarsh Kocharyan too made the speech about the theme. In his speech he
called the Azeris, as well as the other PACE delegates not to forget that
the theme refers to international terrorism which is propagandized by the
Mass Media to spread terror in people. He also mentioned that terrorism in
anti-humanitarian phenomenon which does not praise the human life as the
highest value.

SHOW OF ARCHIVAL DOCUMENTS IN MEMORY OF REPRESSED CLERGYMEN OPENS AT NAA

YEREVAN, JUNE 16, NOYAN TAPAN. A show of archival documents, “I am
Alive and You will be”, dedicated to the memory of the clergymen
repressed from the 1920s to the 1950s opened at the National Archives
of Armenia (NAA) on June 16. The show was organized jointly by the
Archives of the Mother See of Holy Echmiadzin and the NAA. The show
presents over 150 documenst kept at NAA, including the personal
files of the repressed clergymen, as well as the letters written
by the Armenian Catholicoses of that time to the Soviev authorities
demanding that the violence and persecutions unleashed against the
Armenian Church be stopped. Recalling that period, Chief Priest Eghishe
Sarsgsian, an inspector of the Gevorgian Seminary of Echmiadzin,
noted that about 200 Armenian priests died during the Stalin regime,
including Bishop Artak Smbatian, Archimandrite Vrtanes Hakobian,
Bishop Aristakes Zuloyan, Archbishop Sahak Ter-Hovhannisian and others
who photos are featured at the show. Priest Astghik Karapetian,
the director of the Archives of the Mother See, said that “this
joint initiative of the NAA and the Mother See of Holy Echmiadzin is
definitely demand for justice and a spiritual duty since, as Catholicos
of All Armenians Vazgen I wrote years ago, “it would be unfair to bury
in oblivion the sufferings and destruction inflicted to the Armenian
Apostolic Church in those cruel times.” The vocal quintet “Luys”
(“Light”) performed spiritual works at the opening ceremony. The show
will last until late June.
