Iran, Armenia plan to expand regional transit

IRNA (Islamic Republic News Agency) – Iran

Tehran, IRNA – Iran Minister of Transport and Urban Development Rostam Ghasemi in a meeting with Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure of the Republic of Armenia Gnel Sanosyan on Monday discussed the details of bilateral transit cooperation and joint infrastructural projects.

During bilateral talks, Iran and Armenia expressed their willingness for reaching agreements that would facilitate transit and trade between the two countries and in the region.

In the meeting, Kheirollah Khademi, director-general of Construction and Development of Transportation Infrastructures Company, pointed to the previous negotiations and visits to Armenia for the implementation of the road route from Nurduz to Yerevan and re-design of Iran’s routes to Nurduz, informed of Iran’s preparation to participate in the construction of the southern part of the strategically important Tatev Road in the Sisian (southern Armenia) to Nurduz, particularly the construction of a tunnel and also the development of Nurduz Terminal.

Moreover, Iran is ready to export technical and engineering services to Armenia by Iranian contractors and companies for completing the construction of the Corridor stretching from Nurduz in Iran to Yerevan with higher productivity.

Referring to the transit of 22500 Armenian trucks and 24000 Iranian trucks in 2021, Hedayati, the general director of Iran Transit and International Transportation Bureau at Iran’s Road Maintenance & Transportation Organization, proposed for commercialization of Iranian and Armenian Corridors beyond trade ties for increased regional transit, because the demand for transit is increasing due to the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) and recently signed Persian Gulf-Black Sea Agreement.

For the rail connection, Miad Salehi, head of the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways, pointed to three possibilities for rail transit between Iran and Armenia. The first two rail connections are i) Jolfa-Nakhchivan-Yerevan and ii) Jolfa-Nurduz (in Iran) and Yerevan-Nurduz (in Armenia) railroads which were agreed 7 years ago though not realized by now. The third possibility is multi-modal transit from Yerevan to Jolfa by road and then southward to the Port of Bandar Abbas by rail.

Previously in October 2021, Iran’s Deputy Transport Minister Kheirollah Khademi, heading a delegation, went to Armenia to consider the participation of Iran in completing the Tatev Road as an alternative route to Goris-Kapan Road which bypass Azerbaijan territory due to the heavy tolls levied to Iranian fleets.

OSCE sees need to intensify efforts within Minsk Group to establish stable peace in South Caucasus

ARMINFO
Armenia –
Marianna Mkrtchyan

ArmInfo. The OSCE considers the Minsk Group as an appropriate body and sees the need to intensify efforts to establish a stable peace, prosperity and development of  the region. This is stated in the message of the OSCE secretariat.

This is how the secretariat answered the question of RFE/RL whether  they see the prospect of further activities of the Minsk Group  against the background of the fact that Azerbaijan does not de facto  recognize the mandate of the co-chairs, and there are huge  contradictions between the mediators.

However, the OSCE did not comment on the statement of the Russian  Foreign Minister that the United States and France refused to work  with Russia in the OSCE Minsk Group, against the background of the  developments around Ukraine.

“The OSCE Chairmanship does not intend to comment on the statements  within the Minsk Group concerning France or the United States,” the  response says.

Also, the secretariat did not comment on Armenia’s appeal sent about  two months ago to the co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group on organizing  negotiations with Azerbaijan.  “The co-chair countries, like the EU,  have been actively cooperating with Baku and Yerevan in recent weeks.  Armenia and Azerbaijan, as OSCE member states, are aware that the  organization is ready to provide any support, both within its mandate  and in other contexts,” the OSCE secretariat noted.

A full house in the Aramian Auditorium is captivated by Prof. Hovannisian’s lecture.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – UCLA Professor Emeritus Richard Hovannisian spoke to a full house at Aramian Auditorium at Sts. Vartanantz Church on Saturday. The event was organized by the Providence Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF) “Kristapor” Gomideh and the Armenian National Committee (ANC) of RI. Hovannisian presented a slideshow beginning with the volumes of books he has written throughout his illustrious career and focused on his latest book Armenian Communities of Persia/Iran – History, Trade, Culture.

The entire presentation, which begins at the five-minute mark, is available on the Providence ARF Facebook page.

Prior to his talk, Hovannisian was taken on a tour around the city of Providence which included the RI State House, Brown University, historic Federal Hill and the Armenian Martyrs’ Memorial Monument at North Burial Ground. A small group of admirers accompanied him for dinner at Botega on Smith, an Armenian-owned market and deli located in the heart of Smith Hill where many Armenian Genocide survivors first settled.

Providence ARF member Michael Varadian introduces guest speaker Prof. Richard Hovannisian.

Providence ARF member Michael Varadian introduced the professor, who has now spoken to the community five times in the past two decades. “It’s, for me, a blessing to be able to return to Providence,” Hovannisian said, referring to the last time he was in the city four years ago. “With all the unhappiness that I’ve experienced for our people in the last few years, partly I’m thankful that I was able to find the time and determination to write a book I didn’t think I would ever write or at least edit,” he continued while explaining that he had no doubt this book about the Armenians of Iran would likely be his last.

Prof. Hovannisian dedicates his presentation to his beloved late wife, Dr. Vartiter Hovannisian.

As expected, Professor Hovannisian captivated the audience with his amazing ability to cover so much information with a personal touch. He dedicated his presentation to his late wife Dr. Vartiter Hovannisian. “Vartiter was a beloved physician, but even more so for my life, we were partners for more than 65 years of research together, and whatever I’ve done and the books that I’ve written, her mark is there very strongly,” he recalled. Together, they raised a family and researched Armenian history around the world.

The evening’s topic covered thousands of years of Armenian Iranian history, focusing primarily on the period of the 1600’s to present day.

When the professor concluded, the audience rose to a standing ovation.

All of the available books sold out, and orders were taken for others. Anyone who would like to order a copy of Armenian Communities of Persia/Iran – History, Trade, Culture may contact the Providence ARF at [email protected]. Checks ($30 per book) should be made payable to the Providence ARF.
