Ban on Turkish imports boosts Armenian fashion

Last December, a prominent spot on Yerevan’s central Abovyan Street was home to an outpost of the Turkish fast-fashion chain Mavi.

But following a ban on Turkish imports into Armenia, a reaction to Turkey’s extensive support for Azerbaijan in last year’s war, Mavi is gone, replaced by a homegrown substitute: Prime, a new Armenian label selling hipster reinventions of everyday basics. The store is packed with sweatshirts, jeans and T-shirts of all shapes and sizes. A selection of accessories – handmade by one of the salespeople – hangs on the wall.

Before the ban, clothing comprised the single largest category of Turkish imports to Armenia. Local production of textiles had been slowly growing for years, but has been kickstarted by the embargo.

“The ban helped a lot,” said Elen Manukyan, the co-founder of the Fashion and Design Chamber, a non-profit aimed at supporting and promoting Armenian designers. As Turkish clothing has disappeared from the Armenian market, local producers started offering a broader variety of products instead of the usual assortment of underwear and socks. “In addition, the war changed people’s attitude towards Armenian-made products. Consumers started prioritizing Armenian things,” Manukyan told Eurasianet.

The Fashion and Design Chamber supports local designers by helping them access investment, training, and international fashion shows. The government has helped, too, providing tax cuts to major textile investors.

Over 100 large and small companies are engaged in the sector. Still, the activity is a far cry from Soviet days, when Armenia exported clothing throughout the USSR and textiles employed 150,000 people, a quarter of the workforce, compared to around 8,000 today.

The Armenian government first developed a strategy to promote development of the industry in 2013. The plan drew attention to unused potential manufacturing capacity and projected double-digit growth. Production has indeed grown significantly, with output value tripling between 2015 and 2019 (data for 2020 is not yet available).

But many challenges remain. Armenia used to source most of the fabrics from Turkey. And while the embargo does not apply to raw materials such as cotton, experts predict that the Armenian textile industry’s sourcing map will have to change. Another serious challenge, = Manukyan says, are undeveloped business skills and poor schools.

“Universities do not have the necessary technical equipment and curricula are outdated,” she said. “But little by little we have educated the domestic consumer; they have started buying Armenian. Designers also have changed their attitude and now work on mass production to offer affordable clothing.”

That change is easy to see on Yerevan’s streets: Whereas Armenian-made clothing used to be restricted to a few haute couture offerings, more recently mid-size brands offering cheaper but unique clothing have come on the market.

Some of these labels emphasize Armenian culture – shirts adorned with letters of the Armenian alphabet, Christian symbols, ornaments from classical Armenian art – to attract customers from the large global diaspora.

Other new designers try to appeal to local youth by reinterpreting symbols from popular culture. One, Light Affect, has built an identity around the image of “qyarts” – members of a subculture of powerful, semi-criminal street thugs from the 1990s and early 2000s, which have been transformed from objects of fear to that of ironic mockery.

Another brand with a similar aesthetic, Prime, features stylized illustrations of Armenia’s landscapes. Some of Prime’s T-shirts feature famous mountains and hiking boots. The company also has a line of shirts with Soviet cars – retro models much older than the brand’s target audience.

Designer brands with higher price tags have a harder time getting a foothold in the Armenian market, where most consumers have little to spend. Vahan Khachatryan, an Italian-trained co-founder of the Fashion and Design Chamber, sells haute couture clothing worn by celebrities. Others – like LOOM Weaving, which focuses on knitted items or ZGEST, known for its dresses – offer mid-range prices, yet the cost of a single item can be comparable with Armenia’s monthly minimum wage.

Some small designers work together, setting up stores under the slogan “Made in Armenia.” One such shop, 5concept on Yerevan’s central Sayat Nova Avenue, offers clothing by dozens of Armenian labels, most of which are too small to afford their own boutiques.

Manukyan of the Fashion and Design Chamber is optimistic that Armenian-made clothes will soon be a significant force in the local market.

“Six or seven years ago there were only individuals who worked with custom orders. And factories would just take orders from Russia, sew and ship,” she said. “Now we have serious brands, and new names emerge every day. The [design] field is very active, and it goes hand in hand with textiles because the number of factories is growing, too.”

Turkish press: Tel Aviv prepares to attack Gaza and Iran: Israeli official

Israel is stepping up plans for a possible military operation in Gaza and a strike against Iran, Israeli Defense Forces Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Aviv Kochavi said Wednesday.

“Perhaps we are preparing for a new operation in Gaza in the near future, and we do not and will not accept the violation of Israeli sovereignty, no matter who is behind it,” Kochavi told reporters, according to Anadolu Agency (AA).

He was alluding to recent rocket fire from the Gaza Strip and the launching of incendiary balloons from the enclave. Kochavi also said that Israel was accelerating plans for a possible strike on Iran in case Tehran does not halt its nuclear program.

According to the Walla news site, a portion of funds from the recently passed defense budget will be diverted to beefing up the attack option. Regarding his plans against Iran’s naval activities in the region, Kochavi said the Israeli army is working systematically and in various ways to reduce Iran’s influence in the Middle East.

On Wednesday, Israel’s Defence Minister Benny Gantz accused Iran of launching a deadly drone strike on an oil tanker last month from its territory and reiterated that Israel would act alone if needed to stop Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, as reported by The Associated Press (AP).

Gantz spoke as Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett was visiting Washington to discuss Iran with Biden administration officials during his first state visit in Washington. The Mercer Street, an oil tanker that was sailing in the Arabian Sea off Oman, was struck by a drone aircraft July 29. The attack killed two, a British national and a Romanian. The tanker is managed by a firm owned by an Israeli billionaire.

The United States, Britain and Israel have all blamed Iran for the drone strike on the Mercer Street, but no country has yet offered evidence or intelligence to support their claims. Iran has denied any wrongdoing.

“Our assessment is that the UAV employed in the Mercer Street attack was launched from Iranian territory and approved by Iranian leadership,” Gantz told foreign diplomats in a briefing. His remarks were released by his office.

Gantz, a former Israeli army chief, has previously warned that Israel is prepared to take military action against Iran and called for international action to halt Iranian aggression. The two countries have been locked in a shadow war for years, which in recent months has taken a higher profile after a long string of attacks on merchant vessels.

The attacks began after then-President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew in 2018 from the nuclear deal between Iran and world powers, which saw Iran limit its enrichment of uranium in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions.

President Joe Biden has said he is willing to rejoin the accord, but talks over salvaging the deal have stalled in Vienna. Israel contends its regional archrival Iran seeks nuclear weapons, while Tehran insists its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.

Gantz doubled down on those threats Wednesday, saying that Israel “has the means to act and will not hesitate to do so – I do not rule out the possibility that Israel will have to take action in the future in order to prevent a nuclear Iran.”

Azeri troops set fire to Armenian farmers’ winter hay

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 1, ARMENPRESS. Azerbaijani military servicemen are deliberately setting fire to not only the pastures and hayfields of Armenian villagers in the Gegharkunik province, but also the hay reserves which the farmers are keeping for winter season.

[See Video]
Villagers from Kut and Sotk are reporting to the Ombudsman Arman Tatoyan that as soon as the fire is extinguished the Azeri troops are again setting fire. The wildfires which began as a result of the Azeri military’s arson continues to spread. “In many areas you can’t go anywhere near the fire because the area is under Azerbaijani military crosshairs, and whenever anyone approaches they start to shoot. Firefighting is carried out by rescuers, with support of local residents. But equipment cannot be deployed in all affected areas because the fire is spreading in terrain which is difficult to access. The weather conditions make the fire spread more easily. Studies showed that firefighters were able to extinguish only the fire near Sotk in one day,” Tatoyan said in a statement, emphasizing that the Azeri arson is depriving the villagers from their source of income.

Given the fact that the Azeri troops are located inside Armenian sovereign territory, in direct vicinity of villages, the fires pose a real and present danger to the life and property of the civilian population.

The Human Rights Defender said that the facts show that the Azeri troops are acting deliberately, with intent to cause damages to the civilians.

YEREVAN, JULY 29, ARMENPRESS. Secretary-General of the CSTO Stanislav Zas commented on the situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border. ARMENPRESS reports, citing the official website of the CSTO, Stanislav Zas offered deep condolences to the families of the 3 Armenian servicemen killed during the military clashes on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border on July 28 and wished speedy recovery to the injured.

”The risk of further escalation of the regional situation is of great concern, which can have a negative impact on the implementation of the trilateral agreements enshrined in the declaration of November 10, 2020 by the leaders of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia. We consider use of force inadmissible. Only political-diplomatic methods should be used to resolve contradictions. I salute the efforts of Russia aimed at the stabilization of the situation in the region’’, Stanislav Zas said.

On July 28, at around 03:40, the Azerbaijani armed forces launched a provocation and violated the ceasefire in the northern-eastern section of the Armenia-Azerbaijan border. Three Armenian servicemen have been killed, four others have been wounded in action. The Azerbaijani attacking forces have been repelled to their initial positions, suffering losses. The sides have reached an agreement on ceasefire at the mediation of the Russian side.

On July 29, at around 03:00, the Azerbaijani armed forces, violating yesterday’s agreement on the ceasefire, again launched a provocation in the Gegharkunik section of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, in the direction of Karvachar, by opening fire at the Armenian positions from firearms. The adversary was silenced as a result of the retaliation of the Armenian side.

Armenian American Museum Groundbreaking Held Sunday In Glendale

at 10:15 pm

GLENDALE (CBSLA) – A groundbreaking ceremony was held Sunday evening at the Glendale Central Park for the new Armenian American Museum.

Plans to build the new museum have been in the works for years. The groundbreaking comes after millions of dollars in donations by organization, individual families and the state.

State Senator Anthony Portatino praised Governor Gavin Newsom’s support for the museum.

“Governor Newsom embraced this museum and was instrumental in getting $5 million. The state has invested a total of $8 million into the museum and I think that’s a testament to the Armenian activists,” Portatino said.

The two-story facility, which will span more than 50,000 square feet, will house archives and highlight historical and cultural moments of the Armenian people over the past 5,000 years.

Hundreds of attendees came out for the evening’s festivities, which included dignitaries, special guests and informative video segments on the future cultural and educational center for the museum.

Many of the guests told CBSLA that this will be a place to share a history that people may not yet know.

Louisa Tutunjuan, a supporter of the museum, said the new cultural attraction will introduce the Armenian culture to everyone in the city.

A dignitary, Consulate General of Armenia, Ambassador Armen Baubourtian, expressed how he felt about the new museum.

“It’s going to be a bridge between Armenia community and all other communities in Los Angeles and California,” the ambassador said.

The Armenian American Museum , which is expected to open mid-2024, will give special recognition to the 1.5 million lives lost in the Armenian Genocide, which until April had not been formally recognized by a sitting US president.

Political analyst: Doctor Armen Charchyan is first ‘political prisoner’ in Armenia in post-election period

Panorama, Armenia
July 2 2021

Political analyst Andranik Tevanyan, who heads the Political Economy Research Institute, considers famous doctor Armen Charchyan, the director of the Izmirlian Medical Center, the first “political prisoner” in Armenia in the post-election period.

Charchyan, a member of the opposition Armenia bloc, was arrested on June 23 after being charged with electoral offence. He was taken to hospital shortly after a first instance court in Yerevan issued the arrest ruling.

Speaking to reporters outside the Court of Appeals which was hearing the defense appeal against Charchyan’s arrest on Friday, Andranik Tevanyan indicated the authorities are “cracking down on those who help other people, such as doctors.” He also pointed to media reports alleging famous surgeon Artavazd Sahakyan has been forced to resign.

“So, it turns out that there is a future in Armenia, but without doctors,” he said.

Separately, the political analyst stated the June 20 snap elections have been rigged.

“The authorities, that were reelected, are not legitimate, since the elections have been rigged,” he said, adding the Constitutional Court is yet to rule on the matter.

Tevanyan stressed the need for political changes in Armenia, adding otherwise the problems facing the country will further deepen.
