President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan has declared the ‘importance’ of the so-called “Zangezur corridor”.

“Our efforts to restore the modern Silk Road and enhance the transport infrastructure in our region are not weakening. With the active participation of Turkey, the East-West Interim Corridor initiative through the Caspian Sea and the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway are a more concrete manifestation of our efforts in that direction. What is also clear is the importance of the Zangezur corridor, which will help establish direct road communication between Turkey and the region,” Erdogan said in his speech at the Summit of the Economic Cooperation Organization in Ashgabat.

With this, Erdogan called on the ECO ‘to show full support to Azerbaijan’. Calling the aggression of Azerbaijan against Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) ‘an opportunity to establish peace and stability in the region’, Erdogan stated that Turkey ‘will continue to support Azerbaijan in this process’.

Turkish press: Armenian premier sacks defense chief over border issues

MOSCOW

Armenia’s prime minister on Monday sacked his defense minister in the wake of border issues with neighboring Azerbaijan.

Nikol Pashinyan said that he dismissed Arshak Karapetyan and appointed Deputy Prime Minister Suren Papikyan to the defense minister post, according to a government statement.

Pashinyan also discussed developments on the Armenia-Azerbaijan border and recent “border violations.”

Last Wednesday, Azerbaijan said a provocation by Armenian soldiers along the border province of Lachin had been prevented.

Armenian soldiers tried to block the road between Azerbaijani army positions to start a conflict, said the statement, but they were surrounded by Azerbaijani soldiers, who forced their retreat.

Relations between the former Soviet republics of Armenia and Azerbaijan have been tense since 1991, when the Armenian military occupied Nagorno-Karabakh, also known as Upper Karabakh, a territory internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, and seven adjacent regions.

New clashes erupted on Sept. 27, 2020, with the Armenian army attacking civilians and Azerbaijani forces and violating humanitarian cease-fire agreements.

The fighting ended with a Russia-brokered agreement on Nov. 10, 2020.

During the 44-day conflict, Azerbaijan liberated several cities and 300 settlements and villages that had been occupied by Armenia for almost 30 years.

Sports: Armenia vs. Germany: FIFA World Cup qualifying probable line-ups, match stats and LIVE blog!

Nov 12 2021

Lukas Nmecha is pushing for his first international start when Germany conclude their 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign against Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s Armenia on Sunday (kick-off: 6pm CET).

The Wolfsburg forward – who was previously an England youth international – came off the bench in Thursday’s 9-0 thrashing of Lichtenstein. With coach Hansi Flick expected to release several members of his squad, such as Manuel Neuer and Thomas Müller, early, and with World Cup qualification already secured, Nmecha is among those expected to start. He could have Wolfsburg teammates Ridle Baku and Maximilian Arnold in support, but fellow fringe player Nico Schlotterbeck has joined a long injury list which includes Florian Wirtz and Julian Draxler. With Neuer and Joshua Kimmich absent, veteran Borussia Mönchengladbach centre-back Matthias Ginter could be the man to lead the team out at the Republican Stadium in Yerevan.

Armenia could draw level on points with North Macedonia in second in Group J in the unlikely event they beat a team ranked 77 places higher than them in the latest FIFA World Rankings, but they have a vastly inferior goal-difference anyway. The side captained by former Borussia Dortmund star Henrikh Mkhitaryan will be playing for pride in front of their home fans. Hoffenheim forward Sargis Adamyan is another familiar face for followers of the Bundesliga. Argentina-born Norberto Briasco could join Mkhitaryan and Adamyan in the final third.

Watch: Nmecha “proud” after first Germany call-up

  • Germany were the first team to qualify for the 2022 World Cup, after hosts Qatar.
  • Nmecha previously scored eight goals in 31 youth international appearances with England, and then 12 in 20 with Germany’s U21s.
  • Die Mannschaft have never lost an away game in World Cup qualifying.
  • Serge Gnabry was Germany’s most potent attacking outlet in this qualifying campaign with five goals and an assists, four of those goals coming in five games under Flick.
  • Mkhitaryan had 41 goals and 49 assists in 140 games in all competitions for Dortmund before leaving for Manchester United in 2016.
  • Germany have won all four of their previous meetings with Armenia, with an aggregate score of 21-2.

It seems we must now refer to the territory of Armenia in the past tense – Taguhi Tovmasyan

Panorama, Armenia
Nov 11 2021

“It seems we must now refer to the territory of Armenia in the past tense and that is advised to do with clear judgement and common sense which is unacceptable,”  the Head of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Protection of Human Rights and Public Affairs Taguhi Tovmasyan stated on Thursday, commenting on PM Pashinyan’s statement about the establishment of Azerbaijani customs checkpoints on the Goris-Kapan road section in Syunik Province of Armenia.

Tovmasyan informed she invited an urgent working discussion on the matter, sending an invitation to Pashinyan as well, however the latter didn’t appear. The Chairwoman of the NA Committee read out five demands on the occasion of which the meeting was called for.

“What are the grounds for Pashinyan to state that the Azerbaijani customs checkpoints are not located in the territory of Armenia if no delimitation and demarcation have been conducted? What are the legal grounds to state the Azerbaijani checkpoint is out of the territory of Armenia and what maps are taken as basis for that assertion? Any changes of the state border are made through amendments to the Law on State Border. We have not made any changes to the Law, consequently the statement is controversial from the legal point of view. What is the process of free and safe movement of goods and people under Azerbaijan’s border and customs control? What problems may people driving through Goris-Kapan roadway face and what are the mechanisms for protecting their right to life, free movement and other fundamental rights?” Tovmasyan said.

The opposition lawmaker said she expected answers to the raised questions from the government, expressing hope any representative from the executive branch would appear at the Committee sitting.
