UNITED NATIONS (AP) — After three days in which the war in Ukraine consumed world leaders at the United Nations, other conflicts and concerns are beginning to emerge.

Some are long-simmering ones with global reach that have receded from the public’s attention recently. Israel’s prime minister called for the establishment of a Palestinian state in a speech Thursday that focused on that conflict. The Palestinian president speaks on Friday.

Others are regional conflicts that have flared. Armenia’s prime minister warned that “the risk of new aggression by Azerbaijan remains very high” after the largest outbreak of hostilities between the two adversaries in nearly two years. The ex-Soviet countries are locked in conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, which is part of Azerbaijan but has been under the control of ethnic Armenian forces backed by Armenia since a separatist war there ended in 1994.

Leaders from Iraq and Pakistan, meanwhile, take the stage Friday. Both nations are pivotal to the geopolitical world order but have received less global attention in recent years.

The annual gathering of leaders at the U.N. General Assembly provides an opportunity for each country to air its concerns and express its hopes. This year’s meeting has thus far focused heavily on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the ensuing war, as countries have deplored how the conflict has upended the geopolitical order, repeatedly raised the specter of nuclear disaster and unleashed food and energy crises.

Russia and Ukraine faced off Thursday at a Security Council meeting — an extraordinary if brief encounter during which the top diplomats from nations at war were in the same room exchanging barbs and accusations, albeit not directly to each other.

At the meeting, the United States called on other nations to tell Russia to stop making nuclear threats and end “the horror” of its war. Moscow repeated its frequent claims that Kyiv has long oppressed Russian speakers in Ukraine’s east — one of the explanations Vladimir Putin’s government has offered for the invasion.

The Security Council meeting came a day after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, speaking to the assembled leaders via video, insisted that his forces would win the war and demanded more robust U.N. action. The General Assembly gave Zelenskyy a pass from leaving his wartime nation so he could appear remotely — a decision Russia opposed.

Meanwhile, over in the assembly hall, Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid delivered a speech focused on the Palestinians.

The speech, ahead of Nov. 1 elections, appeared to be part of an effort by Lapid to portray himself — both to voters and global leaders — as a statesman and moderate alternative to his main rival, hardline former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“An agreement with the Palestinians, based on two states for two peoples, is the right thing for Israel’s security, for Israel’s economy and for the future of our children,” Lapid said.

But he was short on details, and there is virtually no chance Lapid, who has long supported a two-state solution, will get to push forward with his vision. Israel’s parliament is dominated by parties that oppose Palestinian independence, and opinion polls forecast a similar result after the upcoming elections.

The Palestinians seek the West Bank, east Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip — territories captured by Israel in 1967 — for an independent state, a position that enjoys wide international support.

Former Russian leader Boris Yeltsin is also buried at Novodevichy.

Gorbachev passed away on August 30 at the age of 91, after a prolonged illness.

Serzh Sargsyan: Today there will be no festive fireworks or expected joy in Artsakh

Panorama
Armenia – Sept 2 2022

Armenia’s third President Serzh Sargsyan issued a message on the 31st anniversary of the Republic of Artsakh’s (Nagorno-Karabakh) independence marked on September 2. The full message is provided below.

“Today there will be no traditional congratulations, festive fireworks or expected joy in Artsakh as it used to be for many years in the past because Artsakh’s independence is imperiled. Artsakh, which for three decades was safeguarded and cherished through the efforts of the entire Armenian nation, has suffered a treacherous heavy blow from behind, and now a considerable part of the victorious, independent, dignified and advancing Republic’s territory has been handed to the enemy.

And as long as the traitorous peace-lovers open our doors for the enemy and do it on behalf of the people in Armenia and Artsakh and make deals behind the back of that very people, conduct negotiations and represent our country, menaces for Artsakh and Armenia, which once was the guarantor of Artsakh’s security, will become more gruesome by day.

Only the removal of those who undermine our state and jeopardize the very existence of our nation can give us a chance to extract the country from this perilous situation, can allow to conduct negotiations with dignity and normalize the relations with the partners. The inability to comprehend this simple truth will be critical for the Republic of Artsakh and Republic of Armenia alike.

Based on this premise, our political team and I personally, our supports and partners have been and will continue to fight against our internal and external enemies.

To be able to celebrate Independence Day again, we must first and foremost erase indifference inside us, erase fear and despair; we must trust our abilities again, we must awake the freedom loving Armenian spirit, we must join the common struggle, we must become a fist again and must defend our right to live in freedom and independence.”

Ruben Vardanyan on reasons for moving to Karabakh: I am ready to sacrifice everything

NEWS.am
Armenia – Sept 2 2022

I am Armenian and I am a patriot. I have done everything for my country and people. Ruben Vardanyan—a Russian Armenian businessman, entrepreneur, and co-founder of the Aurora Humanitarian Initiative—told this to a press conference in the Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) capital Stepanakert on Friday.

Vardanyan denied the rumors being circulated about him, especially regarding his sudden moving to Karabakh. Accordingly, some believe that Vardanyan has renounced his Russian citizenship and announced his moving to Nagorno-Karabakh solely for gaining profit.

“I have developed projects, made investments, and all of that—for Armenia to be a strong, happy, and independent country; that was the basis of my activity,” assured the businessman.

According to Vardanyan, he has found his “place” and is now ready to sacrifice everything.

Armenian-Australians demand answers after Australian diplomat attends Azerbaijani propaganda event in occupied Shushi

Public Radio of Armenia
Armenia – Aug 31 2022

The Armenian National Committee of Australia (ANC-AU) has protested on behalf of the Armenian-Australian community with a letter to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), following the participation of a representative of Australia’s Embassy to Turkey and Azerbaijan to a propaganda event hosted by Baku in the ethnically cleansed and occupied village of Shushi in the Republic of Artsakh.

Defence Attaché, Captain Ben Esler was in Shushi for a “reconstruction conference” hosted by Azerbaijan’s petro-dictatorship of Ilham Aliyev despite Australia’s allies who Co-Chair the United Nations-sanctioned OSCE Minsk Group, the United States and France, boycotting the event being hosted in a village that has been ethnically cleansed of its Armenian populations, where Armenian churches are being converted into mosques.

In the ANC-AU’s letter, Executive Director Michael Kolokossian questioned the unacceptable decision of Australia to participate in the event.

Kolokossian asked: “In what wisdom did Australia feel obliged to visit the currently occupied, and ethnically cleansed territory of Shushi whilst our closest allies––most notably the U.S and France of the OSCE Minsk Group, tasked with managing a peaceful resolution to the conflict––rejected invitations to the ‘reconstruction conference’ in Shushi which has never been part of Azerbaijan?”

The ANC-AU also explained that Australia’s participation in such a conference in the occupied territories of Shushi represented “outright complicity in Azerbaijan’s systematic campaign of cultural genocide in the occupied territories of Artsakh, which the European Parliament has condemned as ‘historical revisionism’”.

Kolokossian added: “Why is Australian taxpayer dollars funding Australian diplomatic delegations to petro-dictatorship’s occupying territories, and accused of committing systematic cultural genocide?”

“Seeing as Australian diplomatic representatives are touring the occupied city of Shushi, they should take a quick pit-stop at Baku’s ethnic hatred ‘theme park’ celebrating dead Armenian soldiers before coming home.”

Kolokossian added: “The Azerbaijani government is not ‘reconstructing’ Shushi, they’re dismantling and desecrating the sacred Armenian Holy Saviour Cathedral, falsifying the region’s historical roots as part of their propaganda campaign in claiming ownership of a region that was never there.”

The ANC-AU letter has requested an urgent meeting with members of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to discuss this grave and concerning matter to the Armenian-Australian community.

Earlier, Australia’s Ambassador to Turkey, Miles Armitage, celebrated the visit of his Defense Attaché in a Twitter post.

Protest in support of Berdzor, Aghavno, Sus settlements of Artsakh held outside Armenia government building

NEWS.am
Armenia – Aug 22 2022

A group of people was staging a protest Monday in front of the main building of the government of Armenia—and in support of Berdzor, Aghavno, and Sus settlements of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh).

They demanded from people and the authorities not to allow the aforesaid Armenian communities to be handed over to Azerbaijan.

One of these demonstrators told reporters that the Armenian people have been persuaded into thinking that it is not possible to bring back what was lost. But according to her, it can be brought back only through consolidation and being a claimant.

Another protester said that the important thing is to raise the awareness level of the Armenian people and to be united.

On August 5, Artsakh Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure Hayk Khanumyan had informed the Armenian residents of Aghavno village and Berdzor town that they had to leave their homes by August 25 as these settlements will be handed over to Azerbaijan. Since August 18, electricity, telephone, internet, natural gas, and later—water—have been cut off in those settlements. The majority of the local population has already left these communities.

Yerevan explosion: Seismic specialists consult rescuers amid danger of structure collapse

 10:42,

YEREVAN, AUGUST 17, ARMENPRESS. Uninterrupted search-and-rescue operations continued overnight at the Surmalu market, the Deputy Minister of Emergency Situations Artyush Grigoryan told reporters.

“The work continues. We are now carrying out some cooling processes. As you know, two people are still unaccounted for, but one of the 16 dead persons is unidentified. If one of the two missing persons is the unidentified dead person then we have one missing person. We have information that the said missing person was near the first-floor entrance of the building, therefore we will carry out the search-and-rescue operation near the three-storey structure. This causes additional difficulties because there is a risk of collapse,” Grigoryan said.

Experts from the seismic service and a private company were asked to assist in determining the best option to continue working without causing any additional damage.
