BAKU: Russia A Key Player In Settlement Of Karabakh Conflict – Turki

RUSSIA A KEY PLAYER IN SETTLEMENT OF KARABAKH CONFLICT – TURKISH PM

Recep Tayyip Erdogan It will be difficult to settle the
Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict over Karabakh without Russia, Turkish
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erodgan has said.

He was speaking to reporters from eight newspapers on the plane as he
returned from Moscow to Istanbul, Turkish newspaper Hurriyet reported
on Thursday.

"We have repeatedly stated that the normalization of Armenian-Turkish
relations depends on the resolution of the Karabakh conflict,"
Erdogan told the reporters.

"The borders between Armenia and Turkey were closed due to the
conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia and the opening of borders
must be preceded by the establishment of peace and the end of the
occupation of Azerbaijani lands. If Yerevan really wants to normalize
relations with us, it should first quit the occupied lands and only
then is the normalization of our relations possible," Erdogan said.

"I said this openly to Putin and Medvedev and asked them to intensify
the work of the OSCE Minsk Group because Russia has the strongest
influence on Armenia and if Russia is not active on this issue,
settlement of the conflict will be difficult," Erdogan said.

"We have made enough concessions to Armenia, we have opened air
communications with Yerevan. However, the opening of land borders is
different," Erdogan said.

Martirosyan Hopes To Turn Ouma’s "Dream" Into A "Nightmare"

MARTIROSYAN HOPES TO TURN OUMA’S "DREAM" INTO A "NIGHTMARE"

While the Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood, CA is home to one of the
world’s most famous fighters in Manny Pacquiao, it also houses some
of the best prospects and contenders in the world as well. One such
prospect, Armenian-born junior middleweight prospect, Vanes "Nightmare"
Martirosyan, 26-0 (17), sits on the cusp of contender status. His
next obstacle on his road to a title shot, sometime later this year,
is former junior middleweight title holder Kassim "The Dream" Ouma,
26-6-1 (16), whom Martirosyan battles this Saturday at the Hard Rock
Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, NV, as part of "Top Rank Live"; a new
fight series on Fox Sports Net. The two will fight over ten rounds
for the WBO NABO junior middleweight title.

I spoke to Vanes last week as the soft spoken, mild-mannered fighter
finished training at the Wild Card. At 6′ 0" with a 73" reach and
an orthodox stance to go with his aggressive combination punching
style, Vanes has all the tools and talent to make a splash in a hot
junior middleweight division. With fighters like James Kirkland,
Paul Williams, Sergio Martinez, Sergey Dzindiruk and Alfredo Angulo
jockeying for position (or in Kirkland’s case, waiting to return to
the sport), Vanes has set his sights on a packed division that promises
great fights for years to come. But Vanes, as he is known to his fans,
has all the tools and the pedigree to more than hold his own among
these talented fighters. Boasting a long amateur career with a record
of 120-10 and a win over welterweight title holder Andre Berto in
the Olympic qualifiers, Vanes is as seasoned a young fighter as you
can get these days. And it all started because of one man: his father.

"I started boxing when I was seven," explained the Glendale, CA
resident. "My father [got me into it]. He was a fighter too, in our
country, in Armenia. I moved [to the US] when I was four years old.

When I was seven, he found out there was a gym nearby and he took
me there and I started boxing. It was his passion too, so I love it
too now."

By junior high, it was clear Martirosyan was a talented enough young
fighter to move to the pros and be successful, so he was taken out of
school and home educated in order to pursue the rigorous demands of
an amateur fighter. After a successful career there, Martirosyan was
picked out of the amateurs and signed to Top Rank Promotions. From
there, he began training with Freddie Roach until the lifestyle of a
successful young man in L.A. began to catch up to him. Vanes decided a
change of scenery was needed. Still, the split from Roach was amicable.

"He had to get out of LA for awhile," explained Roach. "He was hanging
out with the boys; being too social. It was fine when he left. I told
him the door is always open."

Vanes settled on trainer Ronnie Shields in Texas. They fought several
times together, but there was something missing. Vanes began to
lose not only his style, but his training habits and fire in the
ring as Shields’ offensive style was installed and Vanes nature
as an up-on-his-toes, combination-throwing power puncher/boxer was
left behind.

"Ronnie was teaching me a different style," explained Vanes. "I hadn’t
come together yet as a professional under his style. So little by
little, we were trying to get together, but, you know, that wasn’t
working for me very well."

It all came to a head in the Billy Lyell fight, one which Vanes won
but hurt both his hands in. While this wasn’t the reason Vanes left
Shields, the fight marked the end of their time together and served
as an important lesson for the young fighter.

"I hurt both hands," said Vanes. "My left hand was actually broken
and was really swollen up. I had to go to the hospital. I threw an
uppercut in the first round. It was a tough test for me and I am
glad it happened early in my career. I know how to deal with it now
if something like that ever happens again."

After he had healed, Martirosyan and his father decided a return
to Roach and the Wild Card was needed. The prospect’s progress had
stalled and the belief was that Roach might be able to help him regain
that edge he once had. Roach welcomed him home with open arms.

"He was embarrassed when he came back but I told him ‘C’mon. It’s
fine. No big deal’," explained Roach.

As for why Shields and Vanes didn’t fit, Roach chalked it up to
chemistry. Sometimes a fighter and trainer’s styles or philosophies
simply don’t mesh.

"Something was off," said Roach. "He is using his speed and power more
aggressively and more efficiently. The Texas guys had him doing too
much output. I have him sitting him down more. He’s accurate. We have
slowly brought him back to where we had him when he left. He’s back
on track. Nothing against Ronnie Shields. He’s a friend of mine. We
have [Vanes] in good sparring and on a good program. We think it’s
all coming together pretty well."

"Freddie brings out the best in me," Vanes explained with a shy smile.

"He brings out that fire in me. He knows my style very well. I’ve
been working with him for a long time. He looks at me and knows if
I ran or didn’t run. What I do bad or what I need to do better. He
sees all the best parts of me. I fight with fire now. So Freddie’s
the best and he brings out the best in me."

They first thing Roach did upon Vanes’ return was erase some bad
habits that vanes had accrued in Texas.

"The second day he was back, Vanes was hitting the heavy bag with a
headset on," Roach remembered with an incredulous laugh. "Listening to
music while he was hitting the heavy bag. I went crazy. I said ‘What
the f**k you doing?’ I ripped that thing off and laughed ‘We’re not in
Texas.’ We have more of a program now. We have good habits every day."

Part of their preparation for a fight includes Roach watching tape
and Vanes taking instruction off of what Roach sees. While some
fighters prefer to watch it themselves, Vanes has trust in Roach
and prefers to listen to instructions rather than studying film and
gathering preconceived notions that may or may not be useful in the
fight itself. This camp has been no different.

"Actually I haven’t seen any tape of [Ouma]," admitted Vanes. "I’ve
just seen him fight when I have seen him on TV. Freddie’s the one who
is looking at it. He just tells me what to do. I trust in Freddie and
I just do whatever he tells me to do. I [trust Roach] because it has
worked for me already for so many fights. I trust in Freddie. We did
the same thing in the last fight. I may watch it once or twice if he
wants me to look at it and see what I think. But as far as looking
at it over and over again, I just trust in Freddie. He’s the best as
what he does."

With this being their fourth fight together, the fighter and trainer
both feel that the wheels are now close to turning at full speed and
a title shot is not far off.

"I think so," said Vanes. "Last couple of fights, I’ve been coming
together well as a professional fighter. There’s still more to learn.

There is still a learning process. But I think we are getting real
good."

With a plethora of top-notch amateur and professional talent ready
and willing to spar with Vanes and push him to the limit, Roach feels
that all that’s lacking is some fine tuning.

"The hope is that sparring with world champions gets you sharper and
makes you rise to the occasion," said Roach. "I’ve always felt that
if you put Vanes in with a real good fighter, he will rise to the
occasion. If you put him in with an ordinary fighter, he will look
ordinary sometimes.. So, with this fight, we are moving up the ladder a
little bit. We fight Kassim Ouma and beat Kassim Ouma [then] we want a
world title fight. There are a few world champions and a lot of good
fighters out there. There’s Angulo, we’ll fight him [and/or] Yuri
Foreman. And the guy (Sergio Martinez) who just took on Paul Williams.

All those styles are difficult. Martinez is the most difficult,
style-wise, out of all of them; but they’re all difficult. They are
world title fights. But I think [Vanes] is good. He is ready. He has 26
fights now. Undefeated. I think he is ready for the fight of his life."

"I hope so," said a hopeful Vanes. "It’s the plan. Kassim Ouma is a
great fighter and I have nothing but respect for him. I know he is
on the internet talking how he is going to beat me. I don’t talk. We
do our talking in the ring. I’m just humble until the bell rings and
then I turn into a nightmare."

With his team in place and the wrinkles in his game ironed out, it’s
all now in Vanes’ hands to fulfill his father’s dream for his son to
be a world champion.

"When I win, it’s like he wins," Vanes said with a smile.

ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION IN ARMENIA DEDICATED TO THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF BAKU POGROMS

A roundtable discussion dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the Baku
massacres was held in Yerevan at the initiative of the Ombudsman’s
Office of Armenia.

A most real genocide was perpetrated against the Armenian population of
the Azerbaijani capital in 1990. Tens of Armenians were killed between
January 13 and 20. Thousands were beaten, many became handicapped.

Armenians were exiled from the country, their property was robbed.

"Twenty years after these events the issue of rights of the people
that passed through all the horrors remains unsolved," Human Rights
Defender Armen Harutyunyan said.

"Our approach is as follows: it’s necessary to draw lessons and think
how it is possible to avoid reoccurrence of such events in the future,"
he said.

Vardan Poghosyan: Unconditional Ratification Of Protocols In Armenia

VARDAN POGHOSYAN: UNCONDITIONAL RATIFICATION OF PROTOCOLS IN ARMENIA’S INTERESTS

PanARMENIAN.Net
14.01.2010 17:56 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Armenian diplomacy’s mistake in RA-Turkey
rapprochement issue was accepting the point on existing border between
the states. This mistake was caused by the fact the Protocols were
created behind closed doors, no experts being allowed to participate
in the process, legal expert Vardan Petrosyan said.

As he noted at the joint news conference with the head of the
department for international agreements of Armenia’s Constitutional
Court, even in this case, ratification of Armenia-Turkey Protocols
without any reservations is in the interests of Armenia. "No wonder
Turkey drags out Protocols’ ratification, having more problems with
them than Armenia does," Vardan Petrosyan said.

He also added that Turkey’s attitude spells county’s unwillingness to
ratify Protocols as they currently are, trying instead to link the
rapprochement to relations with the third country. "Thus, Armenian
President’s initiative on introduction of changes to RA Law on
international agreements was very opportune," the expert emphasized.

The Protocols aimed at normalization of bilateral ties and opening of
the common border between Armenia and Turkey were signed in Zurich
by Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian and his Turkish
counterpart Ahmet Davutoglu on October 10, 2009, after a series of
diplomatic talks held through Swiss mediation.

On January 12, 2010, the Constitutional Court of the Republic of
Armenia found the protocols conformable to the country’s Organic Law.

Russia Tells Turkey To Drop Karabakh Linkage

RUSSIA TELLS TURKEY TO DROP KARABAKH LINKAGE
By Alex DerAlexanian

MOSCOW (RFE/RL)-Turkey should not link the normalization of its
relations with Armenia to further progress in international efforts
to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Russian Prime Minister
Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday.

Putin also reaffirmed Moscow’s support for Turkey’s dramatic
rapprochement with Armenia, his country’s main regional ally, after
talks with his visiting Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

"We receive with great optimism Turkish proposals on the
normalization of Turkish-Armenian relations," he told a joint news
conference. "We very much hope all elements of shortest approaches
[to the normalization] will be used in the negotiating process and
Armenia’s leadership is also on this positive path."

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov was among foreign dignitaries
that attended the signing in Zurich last October of two protocols
envisaging the establishment of diplomatic relations between Armenia
and Turkey and the opening of their border. Erdogan has repeatedly
stated since then that Turkey’s parliament will not ratify the
protocols without a resolution of the Karabakh dispute acceptable to
Azerbaijan. Armenia responded to those statements by threatening to
walk away from the deal.

In remarks that will be welcomed by Yerevan, Putin made clear that
Moscow believes the two issues should not be "tied in one package."

"It is difficult to solve each of these problems separately, and
if one tackles them in a single package, then prospects for their
settlement will automatically become very remote," he said. "Packaging
these problems is not quite right from the practical and strategic
standpoints."

The Karabakh conflict was expected to be on the agenda of Erdogan’s
talks with Putin and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. Speaking at a
Moscow diplomatic academy earlier in the day, Erdogan implicitly urged
the Russians to do more to broker a Karabakh settlement. He said they
can become "the most important actor" in the Karabakh peace process.

The Turkish premier’s high-profile visit focused on growing
Russian-Turkish energy cooperation. Medvedev described Moscow’s
current rapport with Ankara as "strategic partnership."

RUBEN SAFRASTYAN: "ONE NATION, TWO STATES" CONCEPT HAS EXHAUSTED ITSELF

Unlike Armenia, no large political force in Turkey refers to the topic
of Armenian-Turkish relations in its platform. According to Turkologist
Ruben Safrastyan, this evidences that the Turkish political elite is
not ready for establishment of Armenian-Turkish relations.

Director of the Oriental Studies Institute of the Armenian National
Academy of Sciences Ruben Safrastyan views the steps of the Turkish
authorities, especially the ruling Justice and Development Party,
towards normalization of relations with Armenia as an attempt to go
against the opinion of the country’s political majority.

Some forces in Turkey consider that the normalization of relations
with Armenia is a betrayal with respect to brotherly Azerbaijan. This
is the reason for the statements by Prime Minister Erdogan and other
officials about the link between the Armenian-Turkish relations and
the Karabakh issue. The Turkologist considers that the statements tend
to please Azerbaijan and escape breaking relations with the latter.

Ruben Safrastyan is confident that the "one nation, two states" concept
has exhausted itself, and when working out its foreign policy Turkey
will be guided by its own interests.

As for the Armenian-Turkish protocols, Mr. Safrastyan believes that
despite strong resistance, the Turkish Parliament will ratify those
if the political elite decides so.

World Doctors Orchestra founder and conductor is Stefan Willich,
Professor in Medicine at the Charite University Medical Center
in Berlin, the largest medical school in Europe. He is also an
experienced musician and studied conducting and violin in Stuttgart,
Berlin, Boston/Tanglewood, and Paris.

On the occasion of the Yerevan concert, Willich had come to Armenia
in August 2009 and met with Minister of Healthcare Harutyun Kushkyan.

The evening program wil include work by Harutyunyan, Tchaikovsky, and
Beethoven, and will feature soloist Sergej Khachatryan on violin, who,

BAKU: Turkish PM discussing NK issue in Russia for positive solution

Turkish prime minister’s discussing Karabakh issue in Russia to
positively affect solution of problem: deputy executive secretary of
Azerbaijan’s ruling party
08.01.2010 21:57
Azerbaijan, Baku, January 8 / Trend News, A.Huseynbala /

Including the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in the agenda of the meetings
of the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan with the leaders of
Russia can positively affect the solution of this problem, deputy
executive secretary of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party (NAP) said.

"Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s visit to Moscow is
aimed at addressing several issues in the Russia-Turkey relations. As
known, over recent years, bilateral relations between the two
countries have been developing intensively. The common interests of
Russia and Turkey are recorded in several economic projects. These
countries implement energy projects," deputy executive secretary, MP
Mubariz Gurbanli told the website of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party
(NAP) on Jan. 8.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988
when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian
armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992,
including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts.
Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The
co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group – Russia, France, and the U.S. – are
currently holding the peace negotiations.

Turkish and Armenian foreign ministers Ahmet Davutoglu and Edward
Nalbandian signed the Ankara-Yerevan protocols in Zurich on Oct. 10.

Diplomatic relations between Armenia and Turkey have been broken due
to Armenia’s claims of an alleged genocide, and its occupation of
Azerbaijani lands. The border between them has been broken since 1993.
In addition to the so-called "Armenian genocide" in 1915, Armenia has
voiced territorial claims on Turkish Anatolia.

According to Gurbanli, who remembered the existence of problems
between Turkey and Russia during the U.S. period, now the relations
between the two countries are developing in a positive direction. "The
rapprochement between the two countries, strengthening of economic and
political relations ultimately has a positive impact on the solution
of problems in the South Caucasus," said deputy executive secretary.

Referring to the Turkish press, Gurbanli said that during the visit,
the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict question will also be on the agenda of
negotiations. "It is not accidental, since Turkey has initiated
various projects, including Platform of peace and stability in
Caucasus, in order to restore peace and stability in the South
Caucasus. In August 2008, during Russian-Georgian war, Turkey was one
of the most active countries, making many efforts to restore peace in
the region," said the spokesman of the ruling party.

He said that including the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in the agenda of
Erdogan’s meetings with the leaders of Russia can positively affect
the solution of this problem. "Russia is a co-chairman of OSCE Minsk
Group, and Turkey is a member of the Minsk Group, and a big state.
Russia has enough possibilities to influence Armenia. The question of
opening border between Turkey and Armenia is also in Russia’s
interest. Because opening the border would "give breath" to Armenia,
which is under a difficult economic situation," he said.

According to Gurbanli, despite all these, Turkey’s position is clear.
"Without solution of the Karabakh issue, borders will not be opened.
>From this point of view, I think that comprehensive discussions over
several issues during the forthcoming visit will bring positive
results," said deputy executive secretary.

NAP was founded in 1992 by Nationwide Leader Heydar Aliyev when he was
Chairman of Supreme Assembly of Nakhchivan. Now the ruling 16 years
organization is chaired by President Ilham Aliyev.

Turkey, Russia holding closed-door discussions on Armenia

Turkey, Russia holding closed-door discussions on Armenia
08.01.2010 13:25 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Turkish President Abdullah Gul revealed Tuesday that
Turkey and Russia have been engaged in closed-door discussions
concerning Armenia since Ankara and Yerevan signed the Turkey-Armenia
protocols in October.

Gul made the revelation during an interview broadcast on CNN Turk. He
stated that `silent, yet very active diplomacy’ has been occurring
between Turkey and Russia, focusing on a political settlement of the
Nagorno Karabakh conflict.

`While we are raising the frozen conflicts, making the process open
would only complicate it,’ Gul told CNN Turk, explaining why details
of the discussions are being kept under wraps.

The protocols aimed at normalization of bilateral ties and opening of
the common border between Armenia and Turkey were signed in Zurich by
Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian and his Turkish
counterpart Ahmet Davutoglu on October 10, 2009, after a series of
diplomatic talks held through Swiss mediation.
