The money will be spent to purchase modern Russian weapons at a discount in 2015-2017, he said.

Matteo Darmian reportedly set to become Bayern’s first summer signing

Arsenal and Manchester United target Matteo Darmian is on the verge of joining Bayern Munich from Torino, it has been claimed, accoring to .

The 25-year-old Italian international has grabbed headlines this summer as a number of top clubs are involved in a mad scramble to acquire his signature.

Arsenal and Manchester United have maintained a long term interest in the full-back and were hoping to take him to England this summer but the German powerhouses seemed to have beaten them to the post.

German champions Bayern Munich have been on his trail and it has been claimed that they are on the verge of clinching Darmian’s signature.

According to Italian daily Tuttosport, the Bavarians are close to agreeing a deal worth €16m plus add-ons with Torino for the transfer of the Italian right-back.

Other than enjoying an impressive season with Torino, Darmian has also established himself in the Italian national team and has earned 11 caps for the Azzurri.

According to , the right-back of an Armenian origin played 46 matches for Torino in Serie A and Europa League this season, scoring twice and assisting one goal.

At Bayern, Darmian could become an alternative to Rafinha, who played as a right-back in the most important matches in Bundesliga and Champions League.

New York Museum of Jewish Heritage to mark Armenian Genocide centennial

On Thursday, May 14, Robert M. Morgenthau, Chairman Emeritus of the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York, will lead a commemoration of the Armenian Genocide at the Museum, repots the Armenian Assembly of America.

The ceremony will include remarks from Mr. Morgenthau, Carnegie Corporation President Vartan Gregorian, and His Eminence Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, Primate of the Diocese of the Armenian Church of America (Eastern). The program will feature an excerpt from the award-winning PBS documentary Morgenthau and a musical performance by pianist Hayk Arsenyan, followed by a reception.

The program is made possible through the generous support of Museum Trustee Peter S. Kalikow.

On April 24, 1915, Ottoman officials ordered the deportation of Armenian intellectuals from Constantinople – a devastating blow that stripped the beleaguered community of the ability to defend itself. Word of the atrocity that befell the Armenians a century ago was spread, in no small part, by Henry Morgenthau Sr., the American ambassador to the Ottoman Empire and the grandfather of the Museum’s Chairman Emeritus, Robert M. Morgenthau. Remembering the Armenian Genocide has always been important for the Museum. Hitler was infamously said to have asked, “Who, today, remembers the annihilation of the Armenians?”

In holding this ceremony, the Museum affirms its commitment to remember.

Mkhitaryan offers something Dortmund wouldn’t have without him

Borussia Dortmund picked up another vital three points in their quest for European football next season with a 2-0 win over Hertha Berlin on Saturday.

However, with Marco Reus out injured, the responsibility to guide Jurgen Klopp’s side through another tricky tie fell upon the shoulders of Armenian international Henrikh Mkhitaryan. And he didn’t disappoint, the writes.

With Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang misfiring of sorts at the moment, with just two goals in his last six Bundesliga games, as well as an out of form Shinji Kagawa and Kevin Kampl, it was Mkhitaryan who stood up and stood out in this rather temped front line.

Playing on the right side of the front three, the attacking midfielder was the go-to player for all things attacking for Klopp’s team on the day. Sure, Kagawa can make a pass and Kampl has heart, but it was Mkhitaryan who was constantly skipping past players and always in the right place at the right time.

This was best illustrated in the manner of Mkhitaryan’s passing which was seen across the pitch as he drifted from right to left and through the middle of the pitch. A number of his passes were directed straight at goal, with a number of short, completed passes on the edge of the Hertha box.

According to the author, “with Mkhitaryan in the team we see a little bit of creativity that certainly goes a long way.”

Another aspect of that vital creativity is in the way Mkhitaryan dribbles past players with such ease when he is at the top of his game. Unlike Kampl, Kevin Grosskreutz and Jakub Blaszczykowski, Mkhitaryan has lately shown exactly what he’s capable of in shaking things up in attack and offering something that Dortmund simply wouldn’t have without him.

A welcome sign for a player who Dortmund spent so much money on and entrusted so much hope in bringing them success. This season may well be something of a write-off for the whole squad, but with form like this Mkhitaryan may well be looking towards a very big campaign later this year.

President Serzh Sargsyan visits US Holocaust Memorial Museum

On May 6, President Serzh Sargsyan, who has conducted a working visit to the United States of America, visited the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington. During the tour, the curator of the museum introduced the Armenian president to the exhibition items. After the tour, Serzh Sargsyan made a note in the museum’s honorary guest book: “I am very impressed with what I saw. This is a place whose walls embrace deep sorrow and at the same time a big ray of hope, emphasizing the advantage of confronting the past over its denial and disguise. This is an invaluable contribution as a silent, but vivid safeguard of the future.

The museums devoted to crimes against humanity, such as this Holocaust memorial museum and the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute in Yerevan, are not only aimed at paying tribute to victims, are not only the summarized memories of survivors, but also carry a clear message to present and future generations so that they always keep remembering the bitter memories of the past in order to take lessons and pass them down from generation to generation,” reads the RA president’s note.

YP London Holds Its First Armenian Networking Event

On the evening of November 12, 2009, the AGBU Young Professionals (YP)
London held its first Armenian Networking Event in Bonds London after
nearly a year of planning. Throughout 2009, YP London had been trying to
organize a networking event with the goal of bringing together young
Armenian professionals from London and the surrounding areas. The
inaugural event focused on uniting bright young Armenians working within
such fields as banking and finance, entrepreneurship, medicine and
dentistry, law, and communications and technology. More experienced
professionals also showed up at the event, providing guidance and
mentorship for the ambitious attendees.

With over 90 participants in attendance, the event was without a doubt a
success. Armenian professionals from London and its outskirts were given
an opportunity to network with one another and build business
relationships. University students and junior professionals were
provided with an excellent platform to interact with more established
professionals and seek guidance regarding their career paths.
Participants were also given the chance to break up into different
groups based on their professions. This was particularly beneficial for
the young professionals, as they were able to exchange thoughts and
ideas with people working in similar fields.

As intended, the mood of the event was informal and friendly, creating
an unintimidating environment that encouraged communication and meeting
new people. The feedback on the YP London Networking Event has been
overwhelmingly positive. Time and time again, it was mentioned that
professionals in the Armenian community of London had been waiting for
such an opportunity. YP London plans to organize similar events and
mentorship programs in the future.

ARMENIA AGAINST ARMS RACE

Armenia

Armenia is against arms race in the region, and countries we must
join their efforts to maintain the limits set by relevant treaties,
RA Minister of Defense Seyran Ohanyan stated at the Rose Roth seminar
organized in Yerevan by the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.

"Armenia will not be involved in arms race, as it is not numerical
strength that is a key factor of its army’s efficiency," Ohanyan said.

According to him, Armenia places emphasis on the quality of its
armed forces.
