Aleppo, one of the most ancient cities located in the north of Syria, became the homeland of a large Armenian community. However, many of Armenians were forced to leave Syria during the war, News Front news agency reported.

Aleppo’s Armenian district Midan is inhabited particularly by residents of Armenian nationality, but this district is not the only Christian quarter of the city. It is the eastern areas adjacent to the historical center that was bearing the brunt of the war.

This quarter was the main target during the shellings as up to several tens of mines or gas cylinders filled with explosives were flying into the homes of people living there and there was the largest number of affected residents. However, the region is coming back to life. Shops, cafes, mini-workshops and factories have already opened their doors. Now residents will walk the streets without fear.

Midan residents are positive and optimistic, they will do their best to recover and rebuild the city. But the most important thing is that the war is over.

Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov says that the formation of a new government in Armenia in 2019 will help achieve progress in settling the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

“We hope that with the formation of a new government in Armenia based on the mandate of that country’s people, we will achieve progress [in settling the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh] in 2019 and provide good conditions for establishing peace, stability, and progress in this region,” Mammadyarov said at the 39th ministerial meeting of the Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC) in Baku on Friday.

By continuing its “policy of occupation,” Armenia has deprived itself of economic growth, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry quoted Mammadyarov as saying.

“This also causes damage to efforts to normalize common regional trade. The military occupation of Azerbaijani territories does not settle the conflict and will not produce the political result sought by Armenia,” he said.

Memorial unveiled for ‘martyr’ Kiwi WWI soldiers who fought against Armenian Genocide

It’s estimated 1.5 million people died in the Armenian Genocide during World War I – among them, 300,000 Assyrians.

On Sunday, New Zealand’s Assyrian community unveiled a memorial at Makara Cemetery in Wellington dedicated to the Kiwis who fought and died trying to rescue them.

Robert Nichol was a house painter from Lower Hutt, and one of New Zealand’s most respected and decorated soldiers of World War I.

His memory was honoured on Sunday by the descendants of those he died trying to save.

“Captain Nicol [was] shot down and he died, sacrificing his life for thousands of Assyrian refugees,” Assyrian-Kiwi Ashoor Yalda said.

A captain aged just 23, Nichol volunteered for a specialist brigade known as Dunsterforce – a forerunner to today’s SAS.

Dunsterforce was sent to modern day Iran to seize vital oil fields for the British in 1918 – but ended up trying to stop the 20th Century’s first great crime against humanity.

“The Assyrian Genocide was a very specific part of a general process in the Ottoman Empire to ‘Turkify’ the Empire,” historian James Robins explained.

“In other words, to get rid of its non-Turkish Christian minorities – so that included the Armenians, it included the Assyrians, and it included ethnic Greeks as well.”

Mr Robins is writing a book on New Zealand’s many links to the Genocide, and is dedicating a chapter to Nichol.

“He was fighting alongside another New Zealander called Alexander Nimmo, who was from Mosgiel in Otago, and he was fighting to defend the rear guard of this refugee column of around 60,000 Armenians and Assyrians who were fleeing annihilation,” said Mr Robins.

Outnumbered 100 to one, the Kiwis fought bravely; Nimmo survived, but Nichol was shot and killed – his body never recovered.

“What he did was brave and courageous in the sense that it was for a humanitarian purpose,” Mr Robins said.

“And it’s important to realise that he volunteered for this mission – he didn’t have to go into that valley to defend those refugees.”

Jacinda Ardern’s Government has never officially acknowledged the Armenian genocide – over genuine fears Turkey would ban Kiwis from visiting Gallipoli if it did – but it was a very different political story a century ago, under William Massey.

“The New Zealand government under Massey during the war, and in the immediate aftermath of the war, used it as a justification for pursuing the war effort,” Mr Robins said.

“They said, ‘We’ll look at these poor Christians in the Ottoman Empire who’re being exterminated – this is precisely why we need to fight this war’.”

So 100 years on, those crimes against humanity are ignored by the New Zealand Government – but the sacrifice Robert Nichol made trying to stop them is remembered by the people he was trying to save.

Starting from 2019, minimum old-age pension in Armenia will be raised to the threshold of food poverty

Yerevan November 29

Naira Badalian. On November 29, the Government of Armenia approved the legislative initiative of the Ministry of Labor and on Social Affairs to raise the minimum pension to the threshold of food poverty of 25,500 drams. The government will amend the law “On State Pensions”, following which starting from January 1, 2019, the minimum pension will rise immediately by 60% – from 16,000 to 25,500 drams.

As stated in the brief description of the bill, the purpose of the presented document is “overcoming extreme (food) poverty among pensioners”. It is noted that according to the data of December 2017, in 2016, the threshold of food poverty in Armenia was 23,313 drams. As expected, in 2019, taking into account the 3% annual inflation, the figure will reach 25,500 drams. According to the document, as of June 1, 2019, the number of pensioners in Armenia will be 497,394 people, of whom 463,069 people will receive a retirement pension, 32,420 more will receive recipients of pensions through the power structures and 1905 military retirees.

Considering the abovementioned, the Armenian government proposed to introduce a new instrument in the state pension system – “the size of the minimum pension”. “This tool will make it possible to make a more targeted policy in the area of retirees receiving a low pension,” the document says. The authority to establish the minimum pension payments is proposed to be transferred to the RA government. “According to calculations carried out within the framework of budget processes, from January 1, 2019, the minimum pension is provided at the level of 25,500 (at the level of extreme poverty). If the project is approved, according to the RA Law on State Pensions, the pension lower than the minimum pension level from 1 January, 2019 will be paid in the amount of the minimum pension payments. It is noted that the corresponding funds are provided for by the program of medium-term expenditures of Armenia for 2019- 2021.

As of November 2017, according to the data of the Social Security Service of the Ministry of Social Affairs of Armenia, 524 thousand 485 pensioners are registered in the Republic of Armenia, of which 460 thousand receive a retirement pension (basic pension is 16 thousand drams, plus allowances for seniority – 800 drams for the first 10 years and 500 for the next) and 64 thousand pensioners receive an insurance old-age pension of 16 thousand drams. The concept and statistical calculation of the “minimum food basket” in the country was abolished in the late 2000s.

Azerbaijani press: Armenia earns profit from extraction of precious metals in occupied Azerbaijani lands

15:36 (UTC+04:00)

Baku, Azerbaijan, Nov. 17

By Matanat Nasibova – Trend:

Armenia’s aggression policy causes great damage to Azerbaijan in all spheres, including the economic and environmental ones, Zakir Ibrahimov, chairman of the board of AzerGold CJSC, told Trend Nov. 17 on the sidelines of the international conference entitled “Illegal activity in the occupied Azerbaijani territories and the responsibility of third parties” in Baku.

He noted that a report was prepared regarding illegal activities in the occupied Azerbaijani territories, and was sent to the country’s Prosecutor General’s Office.

He said that the process initiated by AzerGold CJSC to bring to justice Armenian companies, individuals and officials, as well as foreign companies related to the production of non-ferrous metals and operating in the occupied Azerbaijani territories, particularly in Nagorno-Karabakh region, was continued by the Prosecutor General’s Office of Azerbaijan.

“Non-ferrous metals [in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan] have been mined for more than a decade,” he noted. “The huge multimillion-dollar revenues of Armenian companies are registered in the so-called Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR), this allows to carry out huge financial transfers to the budget of the so-called NKR, as well as to the budget of Armenia.”

That is, the Armenian budget receives tax revenues and financial contributions at the expense of the profits from the sale of precious metals from the occupied Azerbaijani territories, he added.

“Naturally, Armenia’s occupation policy, its aggression against Azerbaijan lies in the core of all this,” Ibrahimov stressed.

The investigation carried out by the Prosecutor General’s Office of Azerbaijan revealed that managers of the Vallex Group, Base Metals, ACP, Lerna Metalurgiayi Institute, Teghout and other companies registered in Armenia and other countries, as well as individuals, repeatedly illegally crossed Azerbaijan’s state border from Armenia, and created facilities together with other persons in the occupied territories.

It was established that they also received illegal income from the extraction of a large quantity of gold and other non-ferrous metals at the fields in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan’s Kalbajar district, the fields of Zangilan, Tartar district and other fields.

During the investigation, using the high-definition imagery of the Azersky satellite of Azerkosmos OJSC and the geological survey data, the facts of conducting illegal mining operations at ore deposits located in Azerbaijan’s occupied territories were proved.

Regarding these facts, the Azerbaijani Prosecutor General’s Office launched a criminal case under articles 192.2.3 (illegal entrepreneurship) and 318.2 (illegal crossing of Azerbaijan’s state border).

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.

Azerbaijani press: MFA:Armenia barbarously exploiting natural resources in occupied Azerbaijani territories

15:52 (UTC+04:00)

Baku, Azerbaijan, Nov. 17

By Matanat Nasibova – Trend:

Armenia is barbarously exploiting natural resources in the occupied Azerbaijani territories and is causing environmental damage to these lands, Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry’s acting spokeswoman Leyla Abdullayeva said.

She made the remarks Nov. 17 at an international conference entitled “Illegal activity in the occupied Azerbaijani territories and the responsibility of third parties” in Baku.

She noted that the illegal activities of Armenia in the occupied territories primarily violate the laws of Azerbaijan.

She said that at the same time, this fact is gross violation of the principles and norms of international law.

“As a result, these facts should be regarded as violation of the principle of territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, as well as the requirements of the Geneva Convention,” she noted. “It is obvious that Armenia is trying by any means to continue occupying foreign territories and consolidate the status quo in order to further strengthen its military presence in Azerbaijani territories.”

Abdullayeva added that all these steps negatively affect the entire region.

“The resettlement policy of ethnic Armenians to occupied Nagorno-Karabakh region demonstrates the attempts of the Armenian side to change the demographic background in the territory of Azerbaijan, and this fact shouldn’t remain outside the attention of the international community,” she said. “The facts of settlement of Syrian Armenians in the occupied Azerbaijani territories are intended not only to improve the demographic situation of Armenia, but also to create real obstacles for the return to Nagorno-Karabakh of the Azerbaijanis expelled from their native land.”
