10,000 Armenians march for Ottoman massacre anniversary

Men set fire to a Turkish national flag (L) and an Azerbaijan national flag in Yerevan, late on , as Armenians mark the 106th anniversary of World War I-era mass killings. Armenians mark the 106th anniversary of the massacres in which they say some 1.5 million ethnic Armenians were killed during World War I as the Ottoman Empire collapsed. Armenians have long sought to have the killings internationally recognised as genocide, with the support of many other countries, but this has been fiercely rejected by Turkey.

Thousands of Armenians marched Friday in Yerevan to commemorate WWI-era mass killings of their kin by Ottoman forces, the bloodletting which US President Joe Biden is reportedly set to recognise as genocide.

The annual torch-lit march was held on the eve the 106th anniversary of the massacres in which — Armenians say — up to 1.5 million ethnic Armenians were killed during World War I as the Ottoman Empire collapsed.

Armenians have long sought to have the killings internationally recognised as genocide — with the support of many other countries, but fiercely rejected by Turkey.

On Friday evening, some 10,000 people marched from Yerevan’s Freedom Square to a hilltop genocide memorial that overlooks the capital, holding torches, and some singing patriotic songs or beating the drums.

Activists of the nationalist Dashnaktsutyun party — which led the march — burned Turkish and Azerbaijani flags.

The New York Times and Wall Street Journal have reported that Biden is to announce the genocide designation on Saturday — a move which would further inflame Washington’s tensions with NATO ally Turkey.

“If Biden recognises the genocide, that will be a huge moral support for our people,” march participant and unemployed 46-year-old Hasmik Martirosyan told AFP.

“I hope that other nations will then find the courage to follow the great country’s suit.”

Turkey denies the killings’ genocidal nature, arguing that 300,000 to 500,000 Armenians and at least as many Turks died in civil strife when Armenians rose up against their Ottoman rulers and sided with invading Russian troops.

Yerevan has long demanded from Ankara the financial compensation and restoration of property rights for the descendants of those killed in the 1915-1918 massacres, which Armenians call Meds Yeghern — the Great Crime.

Last year, Turkey backed neighbour and ally Azerbaijan in its war with Armenia over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region.

Ankara’s arms supplies helped Azerbaijan’s army win a decisive victory in the six-week war and under a Russia-brokered truce — which was seen in Armenia as a national humiliation — Yerevan ceded to Baku swathes of territories it had controlled for decades.

YEREVAN, APRIL 15, ARMENPRESS. Speaker of Parliament Ararat Mirzoyan and the Speaker of Russia’s Federation Council Valentina Matviyenko held a meeting in St. Petersburg within the framework of the CIS Inter-Parliamentary Assembly meeting.

Matviyenko attached importance to restoring bilateral meetings despite the pandemic. She expressed satisfaction over the existing dialogue between the two parliaments and expressed conviction that the partnership will be further bolstered parallel with the overcoming of the pandemic.

Matviyenko highlighted the trilateral statement which ended the military actions in Nagorno Karabakh, as well as the presence of Russian peacekeepers in the conflict zone, which in her words is the most important guarantee for ensuring the ceasefire. Matviyenko reaffirmed the Russian side’s viewpoint that Azerbaijan is obliged to repatriate all prisoners of war and other detained persons.

Speaking about the CIS IPA activities, the Chairperson of the Federation Council spoke highly about the Armenian lawmakers’ work in the organization.

Speaker Ararat Mirzoyan emphasized that the strategic relations of Armenia and Russia continue steadily developing in various sectors.

Mirzoyan raised the importance of the repatriation of Armenian prisoners of war and other detainees who are still held by Azerbaijan. Mirzoyan told Matviyenko that Azerbaijan’s refusal to do so creates unfavorable atmosphere for the ongoing works on re-opening regional infrastructures.

The sides reached an agreement that an observer mission of the CIS IPA will be sent to Armenia for the expected forthcoming parliamentary election.

Mirzoyan also personally bestowed the Medal of Honor of the Armenian National Assembly upon Matviyenko for strengthening the inter-parliamentary ties between the two countries and her highly important contribution in achieving the release of Maral Najaryan, the Armenian woman who was being held captive in Azerbaijan.

Aliyev deliberately attaches ethnic, religious elements to Karabakh conflict – warns Stepanakert

STEPANAKERT, APRIL 3, ARMENPRESS. The Foreign Ministry of Artsakh has expressed serious concern over the latest speech of Azeri leader Ilham Aliyev when the latter continuing fuelling anti-Armenian sentiments.

“The statement by President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev at the Summit of the Cooperation Council of Turkic-Speaking States is of serious concern in terms of establishing lasting peace and stability in the region.

The President of Azerbaijan continues to fuel anti-Armenian sentiments not only within Azerbaijan, but also in the societies of Turkic-speaking and Muslim countries. By doing so, the leader of Azerbaijan deliberately attaches ethnic and religious elements to the Azerbaijan-Karabakh conflict, attempting to unite the Turkic and Muslim worlds around the aspirations of Azerbaijan.

Aliyev purposefully transfers the Azerbaijan-Karabakh conflict and Armenophobia to the dimension of Pan-Turkism and Pan-Islamism, thus attaching elements of radicalism to these ideologies.

In this context, the first serious geopolitical claim of the criminal trinity of Azerbaijan, Turkey and international terrorists was the large-scale military aggression unleashed against the Republic of Artsakh on September 27, 2020. This is followed by the expansionist aspirations also for different regions of the Republic of Armenia, in particular, Syunik.

Without adequate steps by the international community, similar actions will surely take place in other regions as well, which are fraught with unpredictable consequences for global peace and stability,” the Artsakh foreign ministry said.

Armenia head coach Joaquín Caparrós has offered words of praise for the players after the stunning comeback that saw Armenia defeat Romania 3-2 at a home match on Wednesday.

“You have fought from minute 1 to the end. You have given everything for your colleagues and for your country. You deserve the victory more than anyone. We are very happy to be able to bring another victory to our fans,” Caparrós said in a Facebook post.

Armenia leads Group J of the FIFA World Qualification round after three consecutive victories against Lichtenstein, Iceland and Romania.

Armenia took the sole lead with 9 points after Germany were defeated by North Macedonia 1-2.

North Macedonia and Germany have six points each, Romania and Iceland have each scored one victory and sit 4th and 5th in the table with three points. Lichtenstain is yet to earn a point.

Armenia scored two late goals to beat Romania 3-2 and win their third straight match in European World Cup qualifying Group J.

Eduard Spertsyan put Armenia ahead in the 56th minute but Romania levelled through Alexandru Cicaldau six minutes later.

Cicaldau then made it 2-1 with a powerful header in the 72nd minute, which looked to have given the Romanians the three points before a dramatic finale to the game.

Romania’s George Puscas was sent off in the 78th for a dangerous challenge, his raised foot crashing into his opponent’s chest.

Armenia, with the home support roaring them on, looked to use their extra-man advantage to get back into the game and they did so, in the 87th minute, levelling through Varazdat Haroyan who volleyed in a Tigran Barseghyan cross.

In the 89th minute, Alexandru Cretu was ruled to have impeded Spertsyan and amid the noise and excitement Barseghyan calmly converted the winner from the spot.

Armenian Museum launches Sound Archive program

Wicked Local, MA
March 23 2021

The Armenian Museum of America in Watertown has launched its fourth online program, the Sound Archive, which is featured on its website and social media pages every month. The debut offering presents the full catalog of Mardiros Der Sarkis Tashjian and his brothers for the first time and is considered to be the earliest known Armenian sound recordings produced in the United States in the early 20th century.

To kick off the launch of the Sound Archive, the Armenian Museum is hosting its first webinar with music researcher and collector Harout Arakelian at 7:30 p.m. April 1. This online Zoom event is free; registration is required via Eventbrite at st1yle=”line-height:1.6;,Times,serif”>The content of the Sound Archive is supplemented with vintage images from the collection of Project SAVE Armenian Photograph Archives, and their archivists have worked closely with volunteers from the Armenian Museum to create this original multi-media content.

“The music collection of the Armenian Museum is extensive, comprising of more than 3,000 records donated by members over the past 50 years,” Executive Director Jason Sohigian said. “Volunteer Jesse Kenas-Collins has been digitizing and cleaning up the sound on these old recordings, some of which date back to the beginning of Armenian music in America. We are excited to preview this work online in an event with Harout Arakelian.”

Arakelian worked with Kenas-Collins, Harry Kezelian and other researchers to document the stories behind some of these recordings, and the museum has begun posting these online, starting with the Tashjian Brothers. Arakelian will present some of this material during the webinar, including songs that have been restored. Some of the artists will include the Tashjian Brothers, Karekin Proodian, Armenag Shah-Mouradian, Torcom Bezazian, and Nevart Dzeron Koshkarian.

“Harout has done similar events live at Abril Bookstore in Glendale, and these were hugely popular,” Sohigian said. “So we are excited to host this public event on Zoom. We are sure it will be of interest for our members, fans of Armenian music, and collectors who have taken a renewed interest in these early recordings that were being lost to time.”

“This introduction to the first Armenian recordings in America will highlight music in the Armenian Museum’s holdings, and I will use the Tashjian story as the vehicle to discuss other musicians and recordings of the 1910s,” Arakelian said. “All audio files to be played will be from the Armenian Museum of America’s archive, and we will explore these long-forgotten tunes and hear stories about the creators of culture.”

Like most cultural institutions, the Armenian Museum quickly made the shift to virtual programming such as this over the past year. While galleries had to remain closed during the COVID-19 pandemic, members and families began participating in online events.

These programs have been growing at the Armenian Museum and now include an online concert series sponsored by the Dadourian Foundation and a monthly virtual exhibition highlighting objects from its collection. In addition to the new Sound Archive, the museum has been featuring a weekly ‘’show and tell’’ video hosted by curator Gary Lind-Sinanian, where he shares informative and often amusing stories about objects in the collection. This popular video series is sponsored by Michele Kolligian, president of the museum’s board of trustees.

“Since we have not been able to open the museum galleries to the public, or present live events such as lectures, book talks and concerts, our team has done a wonderful job curating virtual offerings to keep people connected during the time the Museum has been closed,” Sohigian said. “While we look forward to reopening in the second half of the year, we will continue posting online content so our members across the country and internationally can remain engaged and enjoy learning about our vast collection, and beyond.”
