Ishkhan Saghatelyan’s full speech from France Square

Armenia –

NEWS.am presents Ishkhan Saghatelyan, ARFD General Assembly representative and an MP from the Hayastan faction, speaking during a rally in France Square.

"Dear Compatriots,

I have spoken many times about the achievements we have together as a result of this movement. I declare with full responsibility that from the end of April to this day, you, the citizens gathered here, have become the number one security factor of our country. This is a proud yet painful fact. Before this group of traitors came to power, Armenia's security was ensured by our Army, our intelligence services, and our diplomacy. Today, however, there is no state. All those structures have been seized by the traitor Nikol and have become his henchmen. But instead there are you. Dignified citizens of Armenia who defend the real interests of Armenia, who tell the world that we own our homeland and are ready to fight for it.

And all those who think our struggle is ineffective, let them see how they speak out about the Resistance movement in Turkey and Azerbaijan, let them see how worried the leaders of the enemy state are about the fate of the Armenian government. This fact alone proves the success of the movement.

Dear fellow Armenians, the accomplishments are obvious; however, I know that many of you had higher expectations than what we achieved.

We have set ourselves the task of removing these powers in a short period of time, which we have not yet been able to achieve. Our main problem remains unresolved. Armenia still rules us, creating ontological dangers for all of us. This is why many of our friends who fight with us on the street are sometimes depressed, angry, but never broken.

But if the struggle drags on, we should not become depressed or frustrated, but rather fix the gaps, address the problems, and move forward. Fighting should become a way of life, our daily routine.

If the battle drags on during the war, and during the battle you also have casualties, losses, why not desert, it does not mean that you should lay down your arms and retreat, in this case you should reorganize, mobilize your forces, prepare for a long fight and go for victory. We are guided by this principle and logic.

They said that in September we would go back to parliament and work with these authorities. Moreover, they do this by brazenly twisting my words. I never said anything like that. This is an absolute and immoral lie.

Once again for those who haven't understood I must say what we have been saying for the last three months: if the opposition enters parliament it will do so only with its own agenda which our people have set.

That agenda is very clear: the elimination of Nikol, the fight against threats to Armenia and Artsakh, and our initiatives to solve vital issues in Armenia and Artsakh.

The majority group in the National Assembly cannot involve us in their anti-patriotic and anti-national conspiracy by blackmailing us into depriving them of their mandates. CC Backpackers will not see us in the same room with their bogus plans.

To put it more simply and solidly, the Armenian people, unfortunately, have no other platform for the _expression_ of their will than the street than this square. All other institutional platforms where, under other conditions, issues concerning the interests of the Armenian people could be discussed are occupied by a traitor who is a Turkish national. Therefore, our street struggle has no alternative at this time.

Dear compatriots, we have reached a very important juncture. I am not just talking about our Movement. I am also talking about the state, the government of the day, and regional developments in general. At this point, everyone is planning their upcoming activities. Thus, the intelligence services of hostile countries openly declare and discuss how to neutralize our Movement. A group of traitors is thinking about how to retain power. Criminal cases are fabricated, persecution continues, political prisoners remain in custody. I repeat: their only support is the power structures.

I would like to tell you that all the tasks we spoke about from this rostrum are being worked on, all the questions you regularly raise, we have recorded and inventoried them all.

Dear Compatriots, the goals and objectives of the Resistance movement are clear. We must prevent the adoption of new surrender agreements that compel us to make vital concessions, which preclude any agreement without the direct participation of the people; I repeat, Nikol Pashinyan has no mandate to negotiate on behalf of the Armenian people.

Through popular disobedience, we will achieve the ouster of Nikol, whether through his resignation or dismissal. The struggle on these two tracks must run in parallel and complement each other. If we take the road of dismissal (impeachment), two legal requirements must be fulfilled: legal and political grounds for dismissal and the nomination of a candidate for prime minister by the people. The legal and political grounds for dismissing Nikol are clear and fully articulated, and the candidate nominated by the people will be decided together in this publication.

To avoid headlines in the press and unnecessary speculation, I emphasize that we will begin the process of dissolution with parliament when there are sufficient grounds for success. That is, any step and action will not be an end in itself.

Simply put, there are two ways to remove Nikol: resignation or dismissal, to achieve either of which requires a practical manifestation of popular public pressure.

It is the qualitative and quantitative level of the movement that will ultimately determine the effectiveness of our struggle.

The only path to success is the manifestation of popular demand and the practical steps that flow from it. Therefore, we must achieve this with purposeful, well-planned steps and actions," said Saghatelyan.

YEREVAN, JULY 30, ARMENPRESS. US President Joe Biden intends to run in 2024, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said at a press briefing.

The press secretary didn’t comment on a new polling out by the New York Times and other news outlets as well, that shows a majority of Democrats don’t want President Biden to run again in 2024. The latest New York Times poll has 26 percent who say they do want him to run.

“So, the President intends to run in 2024. We are a long ways away from that. I cannot get into specifics of any political — political election polling because I am behind this podium”, Karine Jean-Pierre said.

“Positive shock”: Factors behind 12% economic activity growth

 11:12,

YEREVAN, JULY 29, ARMENPRESS. Despite the expected negative impact on the Armenian economy from the Russian economy – Armenia’s main trade partner – the economic activity index grew around 12% in the first half of 2022, and the flow of capital and tourists were a positive “shock” for the economy.

The government continues to predict 7% growth for the year, with the possibility of surpassing it in case of preserving the current pace.

Services ensured most of the growth – 26,9%.

“We have rather positive dynamics in other branches also, with the exception of agriculture,” says Eduard Hakobyan, Director of Macroeconomic Policy Department at the Ministry of Finance.

“The expectations of economic developments were pessimistic but factually we have a situation when positive risks materialized and we have high economic growth. How did this happen? All professional forecast institutions predicted around 2% economic growth for Armenia in the beginning of the year. We have the Russian-Ukrainian conflict with all its negative consequences, with deep decline expected in Russia, which, certainly, should’ve impacted the Armenian economy. Russia is an important trade-economic partner for Armenia with several connections: export and import, tourism flows, remittances and foreign investments. We had negative expectations from this perspective. But starting from the fourth month we saw rather impressive growth in all directions. Both in exports to Russia, remittances from Russia, foreign investments and tourism, with the latter being the key. These developments led to capital and tourism flows, which is so to say a “positive shock” for the economy. We have rather impressive developments in 4-5 directions, especially in the service sector, tourism-related sectors, accommodation, hotels, restaurants, also real estate, the financial system and transport. I am speaking about people and capital. People moved to Armenia, some companies relocated here, people brought certain capital flows with them. In addition, a foreign currency flow to Armenia is also happening which has developed additional demand for services sector. Therefore, we are having such high growths.”

Asked about the impact on the Armenian economy if in fact the 6% decline predictions for the Russian economy come true, the expert said: “We haven’t had a shock like that in the world. All assessments, including ours, show that Russia is the key factor which is impacting our economy. 1% change of economic growth, drop or increase, is impacting the Armenian economy. This was always the case, both during the global crisis and in 2014-2015 when the first sanctions were imposed on Russia. But the situation is different today because its transfer routes are working oppositely. The changes of the growth that would bring negative consequences are mostly positive.”

Speaking about inflation, Hakobyan said that compared to other regional countries the inflation in Armenia is actually the lowest.

He said that back in February-March international organizations were predicting 2 or 3% growth for Armenia. “But current developments show that all international organizations are starting to revise their expectations higher. For example, the IMF recently made a statement on 5% growth when it had previously assessed 1,5% growth for Armenia.

No alternative to street protests, says Armenian opposition leader

Panorama
Armenia –

The Armenian opposition will not end its street protests aimed at ousting PM Nikol Pashinyan and his government, Hayastan alliance MP Ishkhan Saghatelyan, one of the opposition leaders, has reaffirmed.

“if the fight drags on, we should not be disheartened, but rather fix the problems and move forward,” he said, addressing a rally in Yerevan’s France Square on Friday evening.

“If the battle drags on during the war, we suffer losses and some even flee the battlefield, it does not mean that we should lay down our arms and surrender. On the contrary, we need to regroup, mobilize our forces, prepare for a prolonged struggle and pursue victory,” Saghatelyan said.

He reiterated that the opposition would go back to the Armenian parliament only with its own agenda.

“I must once again repeat what I’ve been saying for the past three months: if the opposition returns to the parliament, it will do so only with its own agenda set by the people,” Saghatelyan said.

“The agenda is crystal clear: Nikol’s removal, efforts to counter threats facing Armenia and Artsakh and initiatives to solve pressing issues.”

He dismissed as “blackmail” the threats of the ruling Civil Contract faction MPs to strip opposition deputies of their seats, saying the ruling team “cannot draw us into its anti-national conspiracies through blackmail.”

“To put it simply, the Armenian people, unfortunately, have no platform for expressing their common will other than this square. There is no alternative to our struggle in the streets at this point,” Saghatelyan stated.

Azerbaijan openly continues its policy of Armenophobia, says Artsakh official

Panorama
Armenia –

The shots fired at the houses in Artsakh’s Taghavard and Karmir Shuka villages and other ceasefire violations by the Azerbaijani military in recent days confirm that the Azerbaijan leadership will not change its policy of hatred, physical and psychological violence against Armenians in the foreseeable future, Artsakh’s State Minister Artak Beglaryan said in a social media post on Friday.

“No matter how much the Azerbaijani authorities play at being peaceful and civil, they still openly continue their policy of Armenophobia and aggression aimed at evicting Armenians from Artsakh and humiliating the Armenian statehood and all Armenians,” he wrote on Telegram.

“As long as the Azerbaijani authorities and people are not ready for a real and dignified dialogue and peace for all sides, the conflict cannot be resolved and there cannot be long-term stability in the region.

“There is no alternative to recognizing and defending the right of the Artsakh people to self-determination, because we are the masters of our fate in our homeland, and this is the only way to prevent a new genocide in the world,” Beglaryan said.

Armenia ombudswoman: Number of investigated trafficking cases in country remain worrisome

NEWS.am
Armenia –

The Human Rights Defender (Ombudswoman) of Armenia issued a message Saturday on the occasion of the World Day against Trafficking in Persons. The message reads as follows:  Dear compatriots, The World Day against Trafficking in Persons has been observed on July 30 since 2013. Trafficking in persons, or the so-called “commodification” of people as a mass manifestation of slavery continues to cause destructive and irreversible consequences for individuals, their family members as well as for the whole society, including from the point of view of the exercise of fundamental rights and freedoms, and physical and mental health.

Unfortunately, women and children continue to be targeted predominantly. In particular, women’s absence of economic stability, the fact of being economically dependent on another person or other socio-economic problems results in an increased risk of trafficking. Hence, among the preventive measures against human trafficking and exploitation, taking decisive steps towards the economic empowerment of women is of fundamental importance. Taking into consideration the peculiarities of the crime of trafficking, awareness-raising campaigns about the concept of human trafficking and exploitation, its forms of manifestation, the methods and mechanisms of protection especially for vulnerable groups (women, children, asylum-seekers, refugees) are essential. In our country the number of investigated trafficking cases, and especially ones with conviction verdicts remain worrisome.

At the same time, as the Human Rights Defender, I emphasize that anti-trafficking policy should not only have a criminal-legal orientation but also a socio-legal one as well, which is expressed by provision of protection, socio-psychological and rehabilitative assistance to the victims and witnesses. On the occasion of World Day Against Trafficking against Persons I call upon the Government of Armenia, law-enforcement bodies, international organizations, civil society and individuals to unite and take decisive steps to prevent any possible manifestation of human trafficking and exploitation of persons, as well as to properly identify, support and protect victims of trafficking, combining the legal, economic, political and social methods of combating against the phenomenon.
