Turkish press: Once hummus now fusion: Palestinians heat up new food trends

From the ancient alleys of Jerusalem's Old City to kitchens around the world, Palestinian cuisine has started to cross the boundries of "hummus."

The trend has whipped up a growing appetite for specialised books and food tours. "It's changing for the better, I think. Many Palestinians are keen on promoting their foods," said Nassar Odeh, as oven aromas wafted over a Jerusalem street. The Palestinian entrepreneur has spent the past few months watching gourmands drift in and out of his new eatery, Taboon, named after the traditional clay oven.

Customers are tucking into dishes such as Armenian lahmajoon, a thin pizza with ground meat and spices which Odeh remembers being sold to hungry crowds in the Old City decades earlier.

"Armenian dishes are part of the Palestinian culture," said Odeh. "This is extremely important because this emphasises the Palestinian presence and the entrepreneurship," he said. "We need to be proud of our products."

Opened last year in what was once the family's souvenir store, Taboon is part of a string of new Palestinian cafes and restaurants. Beyond those within the Old City walls, they have sprung up in other areas of annexed east Jerusalem such as the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, or further afield in Ramallah in the West Bank. They range from a fine dining experience to fusion menus, blending Palestinian ingredients with European dishes, according to Izzeldin Bukhari, who runs Jerusalem food tours and cooking classes.

"It's a great start; we're really in the beginning," said Bukhari, who plans to offer consulting services to business owners wanting to revitalize their restaurants. "Everyone was doing kind of the same thing, but lately I see people stepping up and doing a new concept, new ideas," he said.

Showcasing the breadth of Palestinian dishes and produce remains central for Dalia Dabdoub, who manages Taboon and other venues in the West Bank cities of Bethlehem and Jericho. "We want to change the industry, in doing more food that people don't know," she said.

A variety of aubergines renowned locally, which come from Battir, a village in the Bethlehem area, will soon be hitting the Taboon menu, while some produce is imported from Gaza.

"I always try to choose the tomatoes; when they come from Gaza they're really red and they're tastier," said Dabdoub. Gazan green chillies, meanwhile, are particularly fierce. The advent of new eateries builds on the Old City's history of hole-in-the-wall spots, specializing in a single dish like falafel.

Palestinian chef Sami Tamimi grew up with home cooking, such as school packed lunches of cauliflower fritters stuffed in pita, and went out for certain foods. "I remember carrying a plate and going to the hummus guy," said Tamimi, talking avidly about beloved dishes including stuffed vine leaves and courgettes. Such traditional foods and contemporary takes were compiled in the chef's 2020 cookbook: "Falastin."

"Just 10 years ago, if you went to a publisher and said I want to publish a book about Palestinian food, they would say 'Who's going to buy it?'" said Tamimi, who moved to London more than two decades ago. A growing interest in Palestinian food abroad is tied to a shift away from presenting the Mediterranean or the Middle Eastern cuisine as one set of recipes.

"Nowadays you see more focus on the country, or the place and their food … I think it's a wonderful thing," said Tamimi, who has a series of cookbooks and runs restaurants with Israeli business partner Yotam Ottolenghi.

Israelis have proven more successful than Palestinians in branding local cuisine, noted Bukhari, including an image of an Israeli flag atop falafel at Tel Aviv airport. "They are very good at marketing it," said the SacredCuisine founder. "We are leaving a gap for the Israelis to talk about our food."

But Palestinians are catching up internationally, with Bethlehem chef Fadi Kattan set to open a London restaurant later this year. Tamimi himself is due to return briefly to Jerusalem for a residency at the historic American Colony Hotel in October.

His two-week menu follows a previous event there when the chef saw just how much has changed on the city's food scene. "It was the first time that I worked with a whole team of Palestinians," he said.

YEREVAN, AUGUST 5, ARMENPRESS. The Defense Army of the Republic of Artsakh denies the statement of the Azerbaijani defense ministry according to which the Defense Army units violated the ceasefire regime.

The Defense Army said that the situation in the Line of Contact is relatively stable despite the existing tension.

“The statement of the Azerbaijani defense ministry according to which the units of the Defense Army of Artsakh have violated the ceasefire regime 9 times by using sniper rifles and various caliber firearms is another disinformation and has nothing to do with the reality”, the Defense Army said, once again stating that the Azerbaijani side is regularly violating the ceasefire regime.

“Despite the existing tension, the operational situation in the Line of Contact is relatively stable”, it added.

EU deeply concerned by recent incidents: Josep Borrell responds to MEPs over Azeri aggression in Nagorno Karabakh

YEREVAN, AUGUST 5, ARMENPRESS. A group of Members of the European Parliament have recently sent a question for written answer to the Vice President of the European Commission/High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell about the deterioration of the situation in Nagorno Karabakh.

They wanted particularly to know what concrete steps the European External Action Service intends to take to prevent a renewed outbreak of hostilities in Nagorno Karabakh and to continue the constructive dialogue between the parties.

On behalf of the European Commission, Josep Borrell provided an answer to the MEPs, where he expresses the EU’s deep concerns over the recent incidents between Armenia and Azerbaijan and the possibility of further escalation.

The question was sent by the following MEPs: Fabio Massimo Castaldo (NI), Gianna Gancia (ID), Francisco Guerreiro (Verts/ALE), Isabel Santos (S&D), Martin Sonneborn (NI), Miriam Lexmann (PPE), François-Xavier Bellamy (PPE), Lars Patrick Berg (ECR), Mario Furore (NI), Evin Incir (S&D), Ivan Štefanec (PPE), Costas Mavrides (S&D), Carles Puigdemont i Casamajó (NI), Antoni Comín i Oliveres (NI), Clara Ponsatí Obiols (NI), Eva Kaili (S&D), Tiziana Beghin (NI), Sabrina Pignedoli (NI), Loucas Fourlas (PPE), Carlo Fidanza (ECR), François Alfonsi (Verts/ALE), Chiara Gemma (NI), Dino Giarrusso (NI), Emmanuel Maurel (The Left), Charlie Weimers (ECR).

In their letter the MEPs note that while the world’s attention is focused on the developments in Ukraine, the situation in Nagorno Karabakh is deteriorating. “Azerbaijani forces attacked the village of Parukh on March 24, 2022, and violated the ceasefire on May 28, 2022, fatally wounding an Armenian soldier. This happened a day after a crude speech by Azerbaijani President İlham Aliyev, in which he presented the use of force as an approach to enforcing international law, also claimed that the conflict over Nagorno Karabakh had been fully resolved, made claims to Armenian territory, and said in harsh words that the "Nazis in Armenia" [… ] "should keep quiet and not dare to even turn their eyes to Azerbaijan if they do not want their heads to be crushed again", the MEPs said.

They stated that these actions and statements are in open contradiction with the provisions of the November 2020 ceasefire agreement and the spirit of the declaration issued after the trilateral meeting between Armenia, Azerbaijan and the EU in Brussels on May 22, 2022.

In response, Josep Borrell said: “The EU is deeply concerned by the recent incidents between Armenia and Azerbaijan and the possibility of further escalation. The Commission regrets the loss of life.

The EU takes a positive approach to the continuation of the trilateral talks led by the President of the European Council with the Armenian Prime Minister and the Azerbaijani President. These efforts have already produced numerous results, but a peace process is never without difficulties. The EU's goal remains to contribute to a comprehensive agreement for lasting peace and security in the region.

The High Representative/Vice President has been in regular contact with Armenia and Azerbaijan since the outbreak of hostilities. The EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the Conflict in Georgia has been involved in the preparation of the trilateral meetings and has followed up on the ground on the implementation of the agreements reached between the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan, most recently in early June 2022. On May 31, 2022, the Spokesperson for the President of the European Council issued a statement reiterating the need for a fair and balanced negotiation process and the need to prepare the population for peace. The President of the European Council also addressed both heads of state and government in early July 2022 regarding the recent sharp statements that are not conducive to the nature and spirit of the talks and expressed the EU's readiness to convene the next round of trilateral talks in Brussels”.

"Azerbaijan's deadly attacks in Nagorno-Karabakh are not only a violation of the ceasefire regime, but also an unacceptable continuation of its latest model of aggression. France’s Macron talks to Pashinyan and Aliyev, expresses concern over recent escalation

Public Radio of Armenia
Aug 5 2022

President of France Emmanuel Macron is closely following the development of the situation in the South Caucasus. He spoke by telephone with the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, this Thursday, August 4, 2022, and had talked the day before to the Armenian Prime Minister, Nikol Pashinyan.

He expressed his concern over the serious incidents that have occurred in recent days, particularly in the Lachin corridor. He called for everything to be done to avoid an escalation. He stressed the importance of respecting the commitments made under the statement on ceasefire of November 9, 2020.

“France keeps in close contact with the parties and with its partners in order to continue to support and contribute to efforts in favor of dialogue between Armenia and Azerbaijan and for stability in the region,” Macron’s press office said.

Armenian MP: Azerbaijan is trying to get rid of buffer zone through new route

Panorama
Armenia – Aug 4 2022

MP Tigran Abrahamyan of the opposition Pativ Unem faction has reacted to the Armenian Foreign Ministry’s statement on the situation around the Lachin corridor.

“We consider unacceptable the statements of the Azerbaijani side attempting to unilaterally change the legal regime in the Lachin corridor defined by provision 6 of the trilateral statement, and reaffirm that the road passing through the Lachin corridor can be changed only according to the plan approved by the parties to the statement,” reads the statement.

Abrahamyan says the alternative route connecting Armenia to Artsakh which is under construction will be simply a road instead of a corridor.

“In the case of the corridor, a 5-kilometer-wide area was envisaged with 2.5 km sections on both sides of the road, which, in fact, also served as a buffer zone for security reasons,” the MP wrote on Facebook on Thursday.

“Demanding a shift to the new route, Azerbaijan is trying to get rid of the buffer zone, a layer of security, due to which, theoretically, Azerbaijani positions and personnel can be deployed at a distance of 5-10 meters from the road, which is excluded in case of the current corridor,” Abrahamyan said.

Pashinyan: There are no servicemen of the Republic of Armenia in Artsakh

Panorama
Armenia – Aug 4 2022

There are a number of institutional issues related to the Russian peacekeeping operation in Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh), PM Nikol Pashinyan told a cabinet meeting on Thursday.

“In particular, in the third point of the trilateral declaration of November 9, 2020, it is clearly stated that there is a contact line in Nagorno Karabakh, along which the Russian peacekeeping forces are deployed. That area is called the zone of responsibility of the Russian peacekeeping troops in Nagorno-Karabakh. And we expect that any attempt to cross the contact line will be stopped by the Russian peacekeeping troops, and the Azerbaijani units inside the contact line will be withdrawn,” he said.

Speaking about the mandate of the Russian peacekeeping contingent in Nagorno-Karabakh, Pashinyan reiterated that the signatures of Armenia and Russia are sufficient for implementing that mandate in full force.

“And if not, then it is necessary to take measures to establish that mandate internationally, or to endow the peacekeeping mission with a wider international mandate. I don't want to reveal too many working details now, but these issues have been of our concern since November 2020, we have made efforts to reach concrete solutions, and now these efforts must be doubled and tripled,” he said.

Pashinyan claims no matter how much the trilateral declaration of November 9, 2020 is criticized, it envisages important security institutions for Artsakh.

“First, the entity of Nagorno-Karabakh was recorded, which Azerbaijan is still trying to deny, saying that Nagorno Karabakh does not exist. By the way, such statements from Azerbaijan are a gross violation of the trilateral declaration,” he said.

“Second, it was recorded, as I said, that there is a line of contact and thirdly, the Lachin corridor, which ensures the connection of Nagorno-Karabakh with Armenia. In fact, today's struggle of Azerbaijan is against these three institutions, and it is our expectation that, as stipulated by the trilateral declaration, the Russian peacekeeping force will not give Azerbaijan the opportunity to undermine these three institutions recorded in the trilateral declaration.

“Today, Azerbaijan constantly talks about the Defense Army of Nagorno-Karabakh, why they are stationed along the contact line. If the Russian peacekeeping troops and Azerbaijan guarantee the integrity of the contact line, I think the Nagorno-Karabakh Defense Army will not have the need to carry out combat duty.

“That necessity arose only after Azerbaijan refused to sign the mandate of the peacekeepers and continuously violates the provisions of the trilateral declaration of November 9, 2020, including the cessation of all military operations, which is the core point of the above-mentioned document. Azerbaijan also continuously speculates about the presence of Armenian armed forces in Nagorno-Karabakh. I have to officially announce that there are no servicemen of the Republic of Armenia in Nagorno-Karabakh,” Pashinyan noted.

Russia, Armenia capable of clearing questions about Russian peacekeepers, Kremlin says

Panorama
Armenia – Aug 4 2022

Close contacts at various levels between Russia and Armenia will help to clear questions, which Yerevan has in regard to Russian peacekeepers in Nagorno-Karabakh, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday.

"There are trilateral agreements, which serve as the starting point," TASS quoted Peskov as saying at a news briefing. "The most important is to implement all obligations, which the parties assumed under these documents."

"If there are questions, they must be certainly answered," he continued. "At the same time, all close contacts, which we enjoy at various levels with the Armenian side, will help us to clear all persisting questions."

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said speaking earlier in the day at a government meeting that recent events in Nagorno-Karabakh raised a number of questions regarding activities of the Russian peacekeeping contingent.

Pashinyan said in particular that: "A number of events that have taken place in Nagorno-Karabakh since 2020, including those in recent days, evoke questions from the Armenian public about the content and nature of the peacekeeping operation in Nagorno-Karabakh. In this context, there is an urgent need to agree the details of the peacekeeping operation there."
