All 23 Georgian crew members aboard a Malta-flagged tanker struck by Iran off the Iraqi coast have been rescued, a relative of one of the sailors told RFE/RL’s Georgian Service.

Two oil tankers sailing in Iraqi territorial waters were struck in the Persian Gulf early on March 12, with sailors describing a coordinated attack involving drones and explosive devices.

Iranian state television confirmed that Iranian forces had attacked the tankers, reporting that at least one vessel was hit by an Iranian unmanned vehicle from the water.

One of the targeted ships was the Malta-flagged tanker Zefyros, which included the 23 Georgian sailors, while the second vessel that was hit, Safesea Vishnu, was sailing under a Marshall Islands flag and was chartered by an Iraqi company, according to the Iraqi State Organization for Marketing of Oil (SOMO).

“I spoke with him around midnight and everything was fine,” Nincho Surmanidze, the wife of Georgian sailor Irakli Jashi, told RFE/RL. “Then he called me again around 2:30 a.m. and quickly said: ‘We’re all OK, everyone survived.'”

Later in the morning, she said, her husband told her a drone had struck their tanker, triggering a fire that heavily damaged the vessel.

“He said everything burned,” Surmanidze added.

According to Iraqi authorities, 38 sailors were rescued from the tankers targeted in the attack and were transported to an Iraqi port.

At least one sailor was killed, Iraqi officials said, though the victim’s identity and nationality have not been disclosed.

Surmanidze said her husband had been working aboard the vessel for about six months and had been scheduled to return to Georgia on March 10 before the ship was delayed due to the conflict in the Middle East.

“If there had been no war in the region, he would have already been home,” she said.

US To Allow Sale Of Some Russian Oil To Ease Shortages Amid Iran War

The attack occurred amid rising tensions across the region as Iran retaliates for ongoing US and Israeli air strikes.

Much of Tehran’s campaign appears aimed at disrupting global energy markets, especially hitting targets around the Gulf, including vessels, raising security risks for commercial shipping routes that are vital to the oil and gas industries.

Some analysts say the reported use of drones, remotely detonated explosives, and unmanned vehicles in the water suggests a sophisticated maritime strike designed to damage tankers while limiting direct confrontation.

Officials at Georgia’s Maritime Transport Agency and the Foreign Ministry were not available to comment when contacted by RFE/RL’s Georgian Service, saying information about the incident would be released later.

Trump says U.S. has hit 28 Iranian minelaying ships

Read the article in: ArmenianRussian:

U.S. President Donald Trump said U.S. forces have hit 28 Iranian minelaying ships as of Wednesday.

“They started talking about mines, so we hit 28 mine ships as of this moment,” CBS News quoted Trump as saying while touring a pharmaceutical company in Cincinnati.

U.S. officials had told CBS News that Iran may have been preparing to use naval mines in the key Strait of Hormuz off the Iranian coast.

A reporter asked President Trump on the White House South Lawn Wednesday what more needs to happen militarily for the operation in Iran to end.

“More of the same,” the president responded. “And we’ll see how that all comes out. Right now, they’ve lost their navy, they’ve lost their air force, they have no anti-aircraft apparatus at all. They have no radar. Their leaders are gone. And we could do a lot worse.”

When he was asked about the latest reporting suggesting the U.S. may be at fault for the deadly strike at a school in Iran, the president said, “I don’t know about it.”

Iran said that 170 schoolgirls were killed in a school in Minab in a U.S. Tomahawk strike on the first day of the military operations. The U.S. said it would investigate. Initially, the U.S. president suggested to reporters that Iran might be behind it. But Reuters, CBS News and New York Times reported that a preliminary military investigation into the bombing of the elementary school found the U.S. was likely responsible.

“It’s a call to war”: Pashinyan now angered with references to Artsakh in chu

Aysor, Armenia
Mar 12 2026

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan expressed his anger that the name Artsakh continues to be mentioned during Holy and Immortal liturgies of the Armenian Apostolic Church.

“What does that mean? It means a call to war – nothing else,” he said, speaking with reporters.

According to Pashinyan who declared war against the Church, the Catholicos and other members of the clergy have “taken the leadership of the war party.”

“There should not be such a situation. How can there be six different foreign policies in one country?” Pashinyan emphasized.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that recent military developments in Iran are likely to affect the progress of the TRIPP program.

“It is obvious that, at least for the US administration today, TRIPP is not among the priorities. We see what is happening and what they are doing. Unfortunately, there is a high probability that this will impact the timeline of the processes,” he said in a conversation with reporters.

According to Pashinyan, the US government is currently focused on events in Iran.

“But if it turns out that it will not have an effect, all the better,” he added.

Opinion: Pashinyan is right — Armenia’s path to the European Union will becom

Giorgi Rukhadze, founder of the Centre for Strategic Analysis, commented on a statement by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, who said that one of the biggest obstacles to Armenia’s integration into the European Union is the freeze in political dialogue between the EU and Georgia.

Rukhadze said Pashinyan’s remarks reflect Armenia’s national interests and the current reality.

“Frankly speaking, the biggest problem for Armenia’s European integration at the moment is the frozen political dialogue between the European Union and Georgia. For us, Georgia is the path to the European Union. We adopted a law to begin the EU accession process after Georgia received EU candidate status. That made the prospect of Armenia’s EU membership tangible, and we expect and demand the development of a constructive process between the European Union and Georgia. This is important for Armenia. It is just as important as it is for Georgia itself,” Nikol Pashinyan said during his speech in the European Parliament.

Giorgi Rukhadze said: “Pashinyan’s statement reflects Armenia’s national interests. What Pashinyan says is true. Armenia’s path towards the European Union will become significantly more complicated if Georgia remains in the condition it is in today. Prime Minister Pashinyan did not explain why the process [of Georgia’s integration] has stalled, but in reality we all know why.

Everything would be different if Georgia were not ruled by a Russian oligarch. Bidzina Ivanishvili — the ‘Georgian ayatollah’ — is effectively governing the country today.

Because of this, negotiations with the European Union have been suspended; the visa-free regime is under threat, and, incidentally, the association agreement is also at risk.”

“This situation cannot be fixed through dialogue. There is only one reason why Georgia as a state has ended up in this position: the Russian and illegitimate rule of Ivanishvili.

The need for negotiations will arise only when the moment comes and the Ivanishvili regime sees that it is losing power. Only then will it agree to talks. Have you seen the Georgian Dream retreat on anything over the past two years?

Today there is nothing to talk about. Who would we talk to — the Russians? What is there to discuss with Russian occupiers — whether they will grant you some place in politics? Unfortunately, there is nothing to discuss.

The only way out is unity — expanding that unity. Through a broader unity it will be possible to create even greater pressure on Georgian Dream. External factors will also play a role, and they are no longer working in Georgian Dream’s favour.”

Turkish Press: Turkish Airlines launches Yerevan flights amid Armenia-Türkiye

Hurriyet Daily News, Turkey
Mar 12 2026

Turkish Airlines inaugurated direct Istanbul–Yerevan flights on March 11, marking a new step in the slow rapprochement between Armenia and Türkiye, which have never established formal diplomatic relations.

The move comes as Yerevan and Ankara pursue a cautious normalization after decades of hostility and Ankara’s support for Azerbaijan in its long-running conflict with Armenia.

“Flights on the route Istanbul-Yerevan-Istanbul will be operated daily,” Armenia International Airports company said after the inaugural flight of the Turkish flag carrier landed at Yerevan international airport.

The frequency of flights will gradually increase in the coming months, the statement added.

Armenia and Türkiye have no diplomatic ties and their land border has remained closed since 1993.

In 2021, the two countries appointed special envoys to explore a path toward reconciliation.

Direct commercial flights between the two countries resumed in 2022 after a two-year suspension.

Since then, Ankara and Yerevan have taken several limited steps aimed at improving ties.

They agreed to allow direct air cargo trade and to open the land border to third-country nationals, though the frontier has yet to reopen in effect.

In another modest confidence-building move, the two governments announced simplified visa procedures for holders of diplomatic, special and service passports in December 2025.

Indian Defence Export Milestone: Yantra India Limited Ships First Batch of Gui

Yantra India Limited has shipped its first export consignment of Guided Pinaka rocket pods, reportedly to Armenia
New Delhi: Yantra India Limited Guided Pinaka export marks a major milestone for India’s defence manufacturing sector. The state-owned defence company has shipped its first consignment of Guided Pinaka rocket pods, reportedly destined for Armenia, highlighting India’s growing capabilities in advanced weapons manufacturing and exports.

The development reflects the government’s broader push to turn India into a global hub for defence production under the “Make in India” initiative. With precision-guided rockets capable of hitting targets up to 75 km away, the Guided Pinaka system is seen as a powerful upgrade over earlier variants and a key export product for India’s expanding defence industry.

Details of India Armenia Guided Pinaka Deal

Yantra India Limited (YIL), a defence public sector undertaking under India’s Ministry of Defence, has dispatched its first international shipment of Guided Pinaka rocket pods.

The consignment reportedly left the company’s Nagpur manufacturing facility, marking the first time the guided version of the Pinaka rocket system has been exported.

The shipment demonstrates India’s growing confidence in exporting high-technology defence equipment and reinforces the country’s aim to become a major defence exporter.

Industry observers believe this export could open the door for additional international orders for Indian-made rocket systems in the coming years.

What Is the Guided Pinaka Rocket System?

The Guided Pinaka is an upgraded version of India’s Pinaka Multi-Barrel Rocket Launcher (MBRL) system.

Key features include:

  • Developed by: Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO)
  • Guidance: Inertial navigation combined with GPS guidance
  • Range: Up to 75 km
  • Launch system: Truck-mounted launchers (usually Tatra vehicles)
  • Pod capacity: Typically six rockets per pod

Unlike earlier unguided rockets, the guided version significantly improves accuracy and strike capability, allowing armed forces to hit specific targets with precision.

Armenia Likely Buyer of the Exported System

Reports from defence industry trackers suggest that Armenia is the likely recipient of the Guided Pinaka rocket pods. Armenia has been actively looking to diversify its defence procurement away from traditional suppliers due to delays in weapons deliveries linked to global geopolitical tensions.

India has recently emerged as a key defence partner for the country, supplying several military systems in the past few years.

If confirmed, the deal would strengthen India–Armenia defence cooperation and expand India’s strategic presence in the global arms market.

India Armenia Guided Pinaka Deal Value and Strategic Importance

The initial shipment is estimated to be worth around ₹200–₹300 crore, forming part of a broader defence contract that could exceed ₹1,000 crore, including training and logistical support.

This export is important for several reasons:

  • It validates the combat readiness and reliability of India’s guided rocket technology.
  • It boosts India’s defence export targets, which the government aims to increase significantly in the coming years.
  • It strengthens the global reputation of Indian defence manufacturers.

Role of Yantra India Limited in India’s Defence Ecosystem

Yantra India Limited was established in 2021 after the corporatisation of the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB).

Headquartered in Nagpur, the company focuses on producing:

  • Ammunition hardware
  • defence equipment components
  • high-precision weapon systems

In recent years, the company has expanded rapidly in the global defence supply chain, with exports crossing ₹320 crore by 2024–25.

The company’s ability to manufacture custom ammunition hardware quickly has helped it secure international orders and improve India’s defence manufacturing profile.

Boost to India’s Defence Export Ambitions

India has set an ambitious goal to dramatically increase defence exports in the coming decade.

Exports like the Guided Pinaka rocket pods show how indigenous weapons systems are gaining interest among foreign militaries.

The success of this shipment could:

  • Encourage more countries to consider Indian rocket artillery systems
  • Increase global trust in Make-in-India defence technology
  • Strengthen India’s strategic partnerships with friendly nations

With continued innovation and production, India’s defence sector could become a significant player in the global arms market.
