Anti-PM Protests Continue in Big Cities of Armenia
Protest rallies have been underway in all large cities of Armenia against former President Serzh Sargsyan’s election as Prime Minister on April 17.
A 100-meter long Armenian tricolor was waved during the large-scale rally which kicked off at the Republic Square on April 18. The rally began with the singing of the national anthem.
The demonstrators, led by “My Step” initiative leader MP Nikol Pashinyan, have blocked streets and squares in Yerevan. Over 40 people have been injured in clashes with police. Several dozens have been apprehended.
However, Serzh Sargsyan says that people’s rights and freedoms are a priority for the government.
In his interview with “Shant” TV on Wednesday, he noted that “the goal is to reach the minimal level where people will be able to implement at least half of their wishes.”
Sargsyan was the third President of Armenia. He won the February 2008 presidential election with the backing of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia, a party in which he served as chairman, and took office in April 2008.
On 18 February 2013, he was re-elected as President and served the entire term. Sargsyan was appointed Prime Minister of Armenia on April 17, 2018. Opposition figures described the move as a “power grab” and launched large-scale protests across the country.

Pope Francis to bless Gregory of Narek statue in Vatican gardens
Pope Francis will bless the bronze statue of Saint Gregory of Narek – a real bridge between the East and West, a symbol of ecumenism, who was proclaimed by the Pope as Doctor of the Church. The inauguration of the statue will take place midday April 5 in the gardens of the Vatican.
The inauguration will take place in the presence of Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan, Catholicos of All Armenians His Holiness Garegin II and Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia Aram I.
The sculptor of the statue is Davit Yerevantsi.
The statue was made in the Czech Republic with financial support of Armenia’s Ambassador to Vatican Michael Minasyan and Arthur Janibekyan.
Two statues were made – one for the gardens of Vatican, and one for Etchmiatsin – a message conveyed through art, which can bring the sister churches even closer.
The story behind the idea of giving the statue of Gregory of Narek to Vatican goes back to the Papal visit to Armenia two years ago, when the Armenian President gave a small statue of the Armenian saint to the Pope as a gift, and said he hopes to see the bigger version of the statue in Vatican someday.
Saint Gregory of Narek was a Christian mystic, Vardapet and Bishop of the Armenian Church. He was born in 951 and was educated in the Monastery of Narek. Gregory later became a teacher at the Monastery, and his fame as a Christian scholar was renown. His “Prayerbook of Lamentations”, written in 1003, has also been known by the title of each of the 95 chapters in it: “Speaking with God from the Depths of the Heart”. For ten centuries, the prayerbook has been one of the most often read and respected book among Armenians, second only to the Holy Bible. The book also has miraculous power attributed to it, and is frequently read over those who are ill.
Davit Yerevantsi is one of the renowned contemporary Armenian artists. Born in 1940 in Yerevan, he relocated to Paris in 1974. He currently lives and works in both Yerevan and Paris.

Turkish Press: Turkey slams US congressmen buoying Karabakh occupation
Turkey’s prime minister on Thursday slammed members of the U.S. Congress for meeting with the so-called leader of Nagorno-Karabakh, an Azerbaijani territory occupied by Armenians.
Taking reporters’ question in Azerbaijan’s capital Baku, Binali Yildirim urged U.S. leaders to hold Armenia accountable for its crimes in Nagorno-Karabakh rather than meeting with occupiers and receiving a so-called “medal of gratitude” from them.
On Wednesday, a group of eight U.S. congressmen met at Washington’s Capitol building with Bako Sahakyan, Nagorno-Karabakh’s so-called leader, and accepted the “medal.” The congressmen are known for supporting the occupation.
Azerbaijan and Armenia remain in dispute over the occupied Karabakh region. Nagorno-Karabakh broke away from Azerbaijan in 1991 with Armenian military support, and a peace process has yet to be implemented.
Three UN Security Council Resolutions and two UN General Assembly Resolutions refer to Karabakh as part of Azerbaijan. The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe refers to the region as being occupied by Armenian forces.
Turkey reiterates that the dispute needs to be resolved within the framework of international law and Azerbaijan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Speaking at the Sixth Global Baku Forum in Azerbaijan, Yildirim added: “Turkey and Azerbaijan are working together in counter-terrorism and establishing regional security.”
Reasserting that Upper Karabakh is Azerbaijan’s “rightful cause,” he stated that if there is a terror threat against Turkey or Azerbaijan from the occupied region, it will receive a response.
On Turkish-Azerbaijani ties, he said: “From now on, regional cooperation, cultural relations, and developing tourism will be enhanced as investments in infrastructure projects are increased.”
Hariri: We need to strengthen relations with Armenia
Lebanon and Armenia have many sphere of cooperation, Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri said during the joint press conference e with Armenian Premier Karen Karapetyan.
According to him, the Armenian-Lebanese relations and the relations between the two peoples are deeply rooted in history. Such historical links are also conditioned by the important role of the Armenians in Lebanon.
“For me it’s a great honor that my father, Rafic Hariri, was the first person to established firm fraternal relations with Armenia in 1991. And we are committed to continue this path for the benefirt and welfare of the two countries and peoples”, Hariri said.
The Lebanese PM said during the talks with the Head of the Executive of Armenia they agreed to strengthen and develop relatiuons between Armenia and Lebanon in different spheres, particularly in the banking sector.
