Turkish national extradited from Armenia to face trial in the US

Kemal (Kevin) Oksuz, who plead guilty for his role in a scheme to conceal the fact that a 2013 Congressional trip to Baku was funded by the Azerbaijan government, will face trial in the US today.

Oksuz was extradited from Armenia where he was detained by authorities, pursuant to a warrant that was issued for his arrest. He accepted the charges against him in December of first year before his judge.

  • Justice Department issues indictment for 2013 Congressional trip to Azerbaijan

The Ministry of Justice blamed the Orphan in 2013 for violating the laws of some US Congress members on the financing of a trip to Azerbaijan.

According to admissions made in connection with his guilty plea, Oksuz lied on disclosure forms filed with the Ethics Committee prior to, and following, a privately sponsored Congressional trip to Azerbaijan.

Oksuz falsely represented and certified on required disclosure forms that the Turquoise Council of Americans and Eurasions (TCAE), the Houston non-profit for which Oksuz was president, had not accepted funding for the Congressional trip from any outside sources.

Oksuz admitted to, in truth, orchestrating a scheme to funnel money to fund the trip from the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR), the wholly state-owned national oil and gas company of Azerbaijan, and then concealed the true source of funding, which violated House travel regulations.

A five-count indictment was returned earlier this year in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia and ordered unsealed in September. Oksuz was recently extradited from Armenia where he was detained by authorities, pursuant to a warrant that was issued for his arrest.

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 8, ARMENPRESS. One of the most important processes taking place in Armenia in the past months are the signs of rebirth of professional education. By the mediation and encouragement of the government dozens of private companies sign contracts with the state colleges for preparing specialists for them, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said on Facebook, Armenpress reports.

He stated that this means that the private sector is interested in making concrete investments in the education system, providing material-technical support to the colleges in order to prepare cadres necessary for these companies.

“This means that at least majority of the graduates will have a guaranteed job. The happiest part is that this process is also being carried out in the provinces. Currently nearly two dozen contracts have been signed in the fields of textile, tourism, food industry, design and etc. Signing of nearly dozens more contracts is expected in the near future. I call on all private companies to closely cooperate with the ministry of education and science, the government to expand this extremely positive process”, Nikol Pashinyan said.

Israeli dronemaker allowed to renew sales to Azerbaijan

The Israeli defense ministry has allowed Aeronautics Ltd., an aircraft manufacturer, to again sell the unmanned aerial vehicles to Azerbaijan, The Times of Israel reports.

In August 2017, reports emerged that the company was suspected of using the Orbiter 1K kamikaze drone to attack Armenian forces in Nagorno Karabakh during a demonstration for Azerbaijani officials. The Israeli defense ministry launched an investigation, but last week the Ministry said that it had decided to revoke the export licenses of the company officials.

Aeronautics announced that the export licenses of three senior officials — CEO Amos Matan, deputy CEO Meir Rizmovitch and a third, unnamed, employee — were to be suspended by the Defense Ministry beginning in April.

On Monday, the company informed the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange that the ban on sales of its Orbiter 1K kamikaze drone to its “central customer ‘A’” had ended. “The Defense Ministry announced to the company that the suspension of its license was immediately canceled. The company can continue to supply the UAV to the aforementioned customer as soon as possible,” Aeronautics wrote.

The company also said the CEO, deputy CEO and third official were indeed being removed from the company’s export license beginning on April 3.

“This temporary suspension will remain in place until a decision is made to file or not file an indictment against the employees. Once the aforementioned decision is made, the temporary suspension will be reconsidered”, Aeronautics said.

Israel’s defense ministry probed allegation according to which Azerbaijan asked Aeronautics Defense Systems to demonstrate drone on Armenian military positions. The defense ministry recently received a complaint alleging that after a team from Aeronautics Defense Systems came to Azerbaijan seeking to finalize a contract for the sale of company’s Orbiter 1K unmanned aircraft, they were asked to deploy the aircraft, armed with explosives, on a military position of the Armenian army.

The existence of the complaint was reported on August 13 by the Israeli daily paper Maariv.

The company, however, denies the allegation that its staff conducted such a mission, stating that the company “never carries out demonstrations on live targets, and that was true in this case as well”.

According to Maariv, the two Israeli operators of the craft refused to hit the Armenian position, and after remaining firm in their refusal even after the Azerbaijani threats directed against them, senior representatives of the company armed and operated the unmanned aircraft themselves. Ultimately the drones are said to have missed their targets, and no damage was caused, but according to the complaint, one of them struck at a distance of about 100 meters (330 feet) from the position.

A1+: “Right Wheel” dissatisfied with Vanetsyan’s ultimatum (video)

Though members of the “Right Wheel” initiative came to a common agreement with the government and, as a result of the discussions, they drafted a bill on making amendments to the law on banning vehicles on the right-hand steering wheels, nevertheless, the members of the initiative were again in front of the government building.

According to member of the initiative Vachagan Minasyan, the necessary agencies have given a positive conclusion, but today the issue of the draft was not included in the government’s sitting.

“We hoped that it [the draft bill] will be included in today’s agenda of the cabinet meeting and will be submitted to the National Assembly. We want to understand when this will happen, since Mr. Vanetsyan has issued a statement that if the use of the right-hand steering wheels do not be stopped in Bagratashen untill January 31, the drivers of they will be fined.”

The members of the initiative claim that they are ready to wait for the government, but some problems arise in Bagratashen. They expect the government to make a decision before accepting a solution.

“The cars are being damaged there. There are problems with Customs officers, they say that there is no space for parking, they are right.”

More than 500 cars are parked at Bagratashen customs point.

Armenia has become more visible and more audible for the civilized world. Pashinyan

As part of his official visit to Germany, RA Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan met with representatives of the German-Armenian community and local community structures in the presbytery of the German Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church in Cologne.

Prime Minister Pashinyan, welcoming the attendees, specifically noted:

“It is a great honor for me to be in the Presbytery of the Diocese of Germany of the Armenian Apostolic Church today. Basically, we can say that Cologne is the capital of the Armenian community in Germany, and it is no coincidence that we start our official visit from this city.

It is a great pleasure for me to have the opportunity of such a meeting today, and I want to emphasize what a major change has taken place in Armenia, around Armenia and in the relations between Armenia and the world.

I can say the following. After the famous changes, the Republic of Armenia has become more visible and more audible to the civilized world. This is indeed a reality. sometimes a little uncomfortable situation arises for me, when representatives of various powerful civilized countries of the world directly say during discussions and contacts with us that we have a lot to learn from you. This is, of course, a very strange expression, and to be honest, sometimes I don’t know how to behave because the situation is awkward. ? But by and large, when one, two, three, four such phrases are repeated, I think we should not hesitate to record. yes’, we have problems in many areas, but there is one area in which we are truly considered a leading country in the world today. it is the sphere of building a society free of violence and achieving changes without violence, where we can say that we are a leading country in the world, yes.

Today, political change and keeping public life in general free of violence is one of the greatest challenges that exists in the world, and today the world recognizes that we have achieved great success in this area. I want to emphasize that I am not saying this as a reason to brag or be arrogant, but so that we can record this situation and with this every representative of our people and we as a collective have more confidence in the way of building our future, our homeland, our state.

Today we can record that we are on the way to or already are at least in the family of civilized nations. We say this not to be arrogant, as Paruyr Sevak rightly stated at one time, and we are faithful to that formula today: we do not prefer ourselves to anyone, but we must also state that we really have something to say and do in the modern world. That action is positive, carries universal logic, and what is said and done is interesting to the world and civilization.

This is a very important record, and I think that what happened could not have happened with the efforts of a single group, individual, party. This is the result of our nationwide efforts that we have been able to invest in the process of putting our country on a great path of transformation. We showed an unprecedented example of nationwide cooperation in April-May, and in fact, every Armenian contributed to the changes that took place in the Republic of Armenia.

And, finally, I am very happy to record that for the first time in the Republic of Armenia, parliamentary elections were held, the free, fair, legality of which is not disputed not only by the international community, but also within Armenia, for the first time we had elections, the results of which are not contested in the Constitutional Court.

These are indeed important changes, but we face an even greater challenge. We need political changes to be transformed into economic changes, to move from a political revolution to an economic revolution, so that the level of social protection, economic activity and well-being of people in our country continuously increases. This is our mission, and this is not the task of an individual party, individual, or even the government. This is a nationwide thing to do, and I am convinced that our people have enough potential to continuously strengthen and strengthen their homeland and international to occupy a larger and more permanent place among civilized nations and states in society.

I hope that we will really be able to use the potential that we have created for the sake of our national dreams and goals and to bring our next and no less important meaning to the modern and future civilization.

Long live freedom, long live the Republic of Armenia, long live us and our children who live and will live in a free and happy Armenia.”

Referring to the vision of the economic revolution, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan presented the government’s approach to this issue. “Our idea has not changed, it has remained the same. just as the political revolution was not possible and could not be carried out without the participation of every citizen, the economic revolution will not be carried out without the participation of our compatriots, citizens. How did we carry out the political revolution? we created an opportunity for every citizen to express his position and we guaranteed that the moment the RA citizens, the majority of the public, will register and show their position, will do their part to bring about changes, we guarantee that these changes will happen. The same applies to the economic revolution, where every person is required to be willing to contribute to the economic revolution.

The modern world, modern Armenia is even more a country of opportunities, and our greatest task is to realize these opportunities, to make them realistic. Who changes the world, who changes reality? that’s what people do. The 21st century is the time of people who believe in their own power. Now is the time for us and our people to believe in their own strength.”

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan answered the questions of representatives of the German-Armenian community and community structures, which were related to the negotiation process of the Artsakh conflict settlement, structural changes related to the Ministry of Diaspora, Armenia’s energy security, activities of the Armenian community in Germany, etc.

In particular, referring to the settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, Prime Minister Pashinyan said. “I have announced several times from the podium of the National Assembly and said: why is everyone asking us whether we are ready for compromises or not? And who said that we are the primary subject answering that question? Why doesn’t anyone ask Azerbaijan if they are ready to compromise or not? And therefore I have said several times publicly that we will not answer that question until Azerbaijan does not answer.”

In response to the question regarding the Ministry of Diaspora, Nikol Pashinyan informed. “The staff of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia will have a special assignment ambassador for the Diaspora, who will be the representative of the Prime Minister’s staff in relations with the Diaspora. Our understanding is as follows: the functions of the Ministry of Diaspora should be redistributed. The Ambassador with Special Assignments will have nothing to do except gather Diaspora-related issues, propose solutions, and implement those solutions through the Prime Minister. Therefore, we have thought of allocating the functions of the Ministry of Diaspora according to branch ministries, and having an ambassador with special assignments in relations with the Diaspora, who will work in the Prime Minister’s office under the direct supervision of the Prime Minister.

Our whole aim of optimizing the composition of the government is that every function should be handled by one body. For example, the Ministry of Diaspora always sent textbooks for Armenian educational centers abroad, but the training of Diaspora teachers was carried out by the Ministry of Education and Science. And we very often have situations when teachers are trained under the program of one ministry and receive textbooks from another ministry. It turns out that the use of that textbook and the training of teachers becomes ineffective. The Ministry of Education should be the one dealing with the issue of education. of these circumstances As a result, we have one policy of Armenian education in the Diaspora, and another in Armenia. The same is the case in the field of culture,” the Prime Minister said, emphasizing that the cornerstone of the policy should be bringing the identity of the Diaspora and the Armenians of Armenia closer together.

Music: In memory of Michel Legrand – “Armenian music flows in my blood”

Panorama, Armenia
Jan 26 2019

French-Armenian composer Michel Legrand, who won three Oscars during a career spanning more than half a century, has died aged 87. Legrand, who had been scheduled to hold concerts in Paris in April, died during the night, his spokesman told Agence France-Presse on Saturday.

In memory of the world-known musician, we recall his last visit to Armenia in 2012. Legrand’s visit came in the scope of the Yerevan 6th International Music Festival. The Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra and City Lights Entertainment (London) gave a joint concert in honor of his on his 80th birthday.

During interactions with Armenian media, Legrand spoke much of his Armenian roots and feelings toward the second motherland.

To remind, Legrand’s maternal grandfather – Sarkis Der Mikaelian was Armenian. In 1917, he fled the Armenian genocide and settled in France.

On Armenia
Armenia holds a special place in my heart. My Armenian grandpa died in 1942. As I lived for I 10 years with him learnt much about Armenia. He used to show the chords on piano to accompany Armenian national music instruments. His love toward Armenia was filled with sorrow. When I visited Armenia for the first time in 2009, I met with my extended family members I had never heard before. I have equally suffered along with Armenians for past grievances,” Legrand said.

Оn age
I do not feel fettered because of my age. In general, I’m not interested in birthday celebrations. I consider them as routine things, stages that pass.

On the past life
I wouldn’t like to go through certain periods of my life as I am not attached to the past.

On key to happiness
I find it difficult to answer what the happiness is…For me, may be it is about dedication of your life to music. Music is my passion, that’s why I create, improvise and work so hard.

To note, during the visit Legrand was hosted by then president Serzh Sargsyan. “Every time I have a chance to visit Armenia, I feel, I return back to my roots. It’s cordial for me and Armenian music flows in my blood,” M. Legrand said at the meeting.

“Bright Armenia” party to nominate Mane Tandilyan’s candidacy (video)

If the Ministry of Diaspora was not important, then you would close it for seven months. This is the opinion of the head of “Bright Armenia” party Edmon Marukyan.

“Certainly any minister will say he has worked well. What should they say, should they say that they worked badly?”

Edmon Marukyan confirmed that Mane Tandilyan’s candidacy will be nominated for NA Vice Speaker.

“The record of the nomination is ready, we have spread a message yesterday.”

Ex-president Kocharyan’s lawyers to file lawsuit with ECHR ‘in two-three days’

The lawyers of the former president of Armenia Robert Kocharyan has prepared the
lawsuit to submit the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), one of the lawyers Hayk Alumyan told reporters on Saturday at a press conference. The case concerns the detention and prosecution of the ex-president on charges of overthrowing constitutional order of the country during the March 1-2, 2008 post-election events.

“The application is on my desk right now. We need to insert certain documents and it is a matter of two-three days to submit the complaint to the ECHR,” Alumyan said.
Asked about expectations from ECHR, Alumyan said as any applicant they also count on positive outcome.  “We do expect that the violations taken place in Armenia will receive proper assessment,” added Alumyan.

To remind, on December 7, Armenia’s Court of Appeals upheld the first instance court’s ruling to arrest Robert Kocharyan. Kocharyan and his lawyers strongly deny the charges as ‘politically motivated’.
