Nobody thought the conflict would last so long

`He was a forester, and everyone in the village respected him. Nobody
in the village would say a bad thing about him,’ Granny Tamara recalls
her husband. `He lived in Seydishen (Khachen) from 1938, he finished
school there, he went to the army and returned to the village. He saw
me here, he fell in love with me, we got married. Nobody thought it
would happen¦’

Aunt Tamara had an international family. Her husband is Azerbaijani,
her daughter married an Azerbaijani, the wives of her husband’s
brothers are a Russian, an Armenian and an Azerbaijani. And they all
got on well with one another.

`My husband was strong, he would not have scandals in our family. We
had one daughter, she graduated from the pedagogical college of Baku,
the department of philology. After graduating, she married an
Azerbaijani, who was also a philologist, they moved to our village,
both were teachers. We lived together in a friendly family. However,
soon my daughter died of a disease. Doctors could not help her. She
died and left two orphans. I brought up her children like my own
children. When the war started, everyone left, and now I am alone.
Nobody thought the conflict would last so long. We thought everything
would be fine in a few days, a few months, a year.’

Her grandson Emin was 12, her granddaughter Lily was 10 when they had
to leave their granny. She did not heard from them for a long
time. Five years ago Tamara got a letter from her children.

`We have relatives in Tbilisi. My Emin sent me a letter with two
photos through them. That’s all I have to remind me about them. I talk
to these photos all day long. I learned from the letter that after
finishing school in Barda he was sent to his uncle in Baku to continue
his education. There he got married and has a baby. Nothing about
Lily. I do not know where she is. And I worry about her. I am old, I
have nothing in this life, I am weak. I dream of one thing only ` to
see my children once before I die.’

SOUTH PASADENA – April 24th is marked as the beginning of the Armenian
genocide and is commemorated as a day of remembrance at the site of
memorials raised by Armenian survivors around the world.

Local author Kay Mouradian unveils one family’s experience of the
Armenian genocide, told through the eyes of a 14-year-old girl, in her
novel, "A Gift in the Sunlight, An Armenian Story," now published by
Taderon Press.

Mouradian, a South Pasadena resident for 49 years, "loosely based" the
novel on the experience of her mother, who survived the slayings before
escaping to America after the war.

Her mother only unveiled her harrowing story during the last five years
of her life, Mouradian said.

"My purpose was to really tell the Armenian story," she said. "I was
thinking that the characters would be representative of every Armenian
family that was deported."

Between 1915 and 1918, during World War I, the Turkish government
ordered more than 2 million Turkish Armenians to leave their homes and
march hundreds of miles into the deserts of Syria.

It is estimated that 1.5 million Armenians perished between 1915 and
1923, according to the Armenian National Institute.

Mouradian, a retired professor of health and physical education,
conducted research for her book by drawing on the works of journalists
and historians during World War I.

"I would go to the history section and biography and if I saw the word
Constantinople, I bought the book," said Mouradian, referring the
Turkish capital now called Istanbul. She later walked the same route as
her mother and ancestors did as she researched her story.

After 10 years, the final product is a heartfelt, coming-of-age story of
her mother’s life as she grew up in a time of turmoil.

The main character, Flora, and her family are forced to leave their
sleepy village in the Taurus Mountains and walk hundreds of miles
through the barren deserts of Syria.

Amid the horror of genocide, Mouradian weaves in acts of heroism in each
character’s journey and makes a human connection to a historic tragedy.

Mouradian will read from her book at the Los Angeles Times Festival of
Books at UCLA on at 11 a.m. April 29, and at

7 p.m. May 24 at the Sardarabad Bookstore, 111 S. Glendale Ave., Glendale.

Turkey found itself in a tight corner, not mentioning
the presidential elections

The more Ankara speaks against the recognition of the
Armenian Genocide, the more countries and
organizations are interested in real facts.
12.04.2007 GMT+04:00

Most likely Turkey is being through one of its hardest
times. Exacerbations of the situation with Kurds on the border with
Northern Iraq and presidential elections to be held on April 22 are
very untimely for Turkey to face, taking into account that at present
Turkey has to find methods of fighting against passing Resolution N
106 about the recognition of the Armenian Genocide too. In the issue
of the recognition of the Armenian Genocide, Turkish government seems
to be ready to use any means to prevent not only the recognition of
the Genocide but also its mentioning at all.

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ The story of closing the exhibition in UN, which was
dedicated to the Genocide in Rwanda, became a disgrace not only for
Turkey or UN itself but a slap on the face of the whole civilized
world too. `Turkish government’s attempts to conceal the history from
own nation wasn’t enough. At present campaigns against the recognition
of the Genocide has gone so far, that the initiative of opening an
exhibition on Genocide with the title: `Lessons Learned in Rwanda’ is
being considered,’ announced the Armenian Minister of Foreign Affairs
Vartan Oskanyan regarding the postponement of the dates of the
exhibition dedicated to the Genocide in Rwanda, which was to be
organized in UN headquarters. One may only guess what brought the
Organization to this decision, but the fact that UN backs out more and
more of its principles adopted in 1945, is beyond doubts. The world
has certainly changed in 60 years, but not so much as to obey the
country having perpetrated a massacre. The nuance Turkey fails to
notice is that the more it speaks against the recognition of the
Armenian Genocide, the more countries and organizations are interested
in real facts. Consequently, the truth which the Turkish government is
trying to deny so persistently is being revealed by the actions of the
same government. Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which spends
great sum of money for campaigning against the recognition of the
Armenian Genocide, hardly expects such results.

As for Kurdish issue, here Turkey is in a much more difficult
situation. No matter how stubbornly Turkey tries to prove that Kurds
are terrorists and separatists, and possibly there is some truth in
these qualifications, the Kurdish Labor Party indeed can make troubles
for the Turkish government. On April 9 Turkey sent a note to Iraqi
authorities, which called to take decisive measures to resist Kurdish
Labor Party and recognize it as a terrorist organization. `Turkey is
about to lose its patience for the increasing number of terrorist
attacks organized by the Party militants, having their bases in
Northern Iraq. If the Iraqi authorities do not take decisive steps to
counteract terror, Turkey may apply to the rights given to Turkey by
the international law regarding terror response,’ was mentioned in the
note. The leader of the Iraqi Kurds Masud Barzani promised in answer,
that if the Turkish Army launches an operation in Northern Iraq, his
militants will start work actively in Turkey’s territory. In answer to
this threat Turkish Prime-Minister Erdoghan advised Barzani `to be
more careful with his words and not to utter words which will later be
difficult to be responsible for.’ Abdullah Gul in its turn made a
phone call to Condoleezza Rice and called the US Secretary of State to
condemn Barzani’s announcement. It is not very difficult to guess how
all this will end; Turkey will enter Northern Iraq with the excuse of
finding and annihilating terrorists, Kurds will start organizing
explosions in Turkish towns, particularly in Istanbul and Ankara, and
plane hijackings will be organized just as it happened the other
day. In short the whole story has a 30-year-old history, and doesn’t
seem to be coming to an end. Turkey will never give away the territory
under the control of Kurdish autonomy, though it can be fulfilled by
Iraq with the assistance of Iran, and just another unrecognized state
of `Iranian Kurdistan’, which will have its share of tension in the
already troubled region, will appear on the world map. As for Turkey
itself, it will be used as a tool in the realization of these plans.

The US embassy has not yet received the letter of Public Union "Nagorno
Karabakh’s Azerbaijani community", the US Embassy public affairs officer
Jonathan Henick told journalists, APA reports.

Commenting on the reports about the US Company Sutter Emergency Medical
Associates’ (SEMA) preparing general plan of Azerbaijani region of Shusha
occupied by Armenian Armed Forces, Jonathan Henick said investigations are
being held regarding this company.
"The embassy has no information about this company. But I can say that the
information we gave to the US citizens and companies have not changed, we
always state that the occupied territories are part of Azerbaijan, and we do
not recognize the so-called government and officials there. We said that it
is difficult to get to Karabakh passing through Azerbaijan. The country is
in the state of war and if our companies get to Nagorno Karabakh through
another country they might violate Azerbaijan’s laws," Mr. Henick said.
