Chess with Errol Tiwari
Anand and Gelfand lead the World Chess Championship
Sunday, September 23rd 2007

‘It is a fact that chess games and chess positions
have a hold upon many, a hold strong enough to make
them burst into applause and cause these games and
positions to be preserved in books and to be fondly
remembered.’

– Dr Emanuel Lasker, world chess champion 1894-1921,
in his famous Manual of Chess

After six rounds, India’s Viswanathan Anand and
Israel’s Boris Gelfand lead the World Chess
Championship US$1.3M tournament currently being played
at the Sheraton Historico hotel in scenic Mexico City.

Anand is conforming to the expectations of a curious
world as the highest-ranked active player on the
planet with the staggering FIDE rating figure of 2790.
The Indian super-grandmaster has recorded two wins and
four draws from six games played so far, dismissing
one of my favourites to win the tournament, Armenia’s
Levon Aronian, with classical elegance and an
unlaboured naturalness.

In his mellifluous victory over Russia’s Peter
Svidler, Anand neutralized his opponent’s early
home-prepared initiative in the Marshall Attack of the
Ruy Lopez, then initiated a queenside diversion which
led to a winning attack on the opposite wing.
Undoubtedly, India’s superstar treated the chess world
to a smooth, perhaps puristic demonstration of
strategy in a board game. Anand has been tipped by
former world champion Garry Kasparov to win the
championship.

Gelfand, a naturalized Israeli citizen, is the
surprise of the tournament so far. Like Anand, he
boasts two wins and four draws from six games. His
last win against Alexander Morozevich surprised many,
including myself. Gelfand played with maturity and
expressed himself well in the opening and the
middle-game. He found the most accurate moves going
into the endgame when he drew with world champion
Vladimir Kramnik. Suddenly the world is watching
Gelfand and paying serious attention to his games.

Here at home, Suriname has invited Guyana to
participate in its open chess tournament at the end of
October, but we have to politely say no, because I do
not believe we are ready for international
competition. Added to that, October is going to be a
busy month for chess beginning with the preparations
for the establishment of the new Guyana Chess
Federation. Added to that, Dr Frank Anthony, MP, has
said he wants to begin the Chess-in-Schools programme
by the end of October, and the National Chess
Championship will begin around that time. The Minister
also noted that French Guiana has invited us to their
open tournament, but again we have to say no. Next
year perhaps.

To my knowledge, Guyana has never sent a team to play
chess in French Guiana. We played in Suriname over a
decade ago, and have enjoyed a number of amicable
exchanges with that country over the years.

Today, the final rounds of the qualification
tournament to determine who will participate in the
upcoming National Championship, would be played at the
Kei-Shar’s Staff Club in Hadfield and Camp Streets.
Shiv Nandalall is leading the tournament on three
points from three games played so far. Former national
junior player Kriskal Persaud from Rose Hall is in
second place with 2½ points.

Players wishing to become members of the new Guyana
Chess Federation can do so by visiting the Kei-Shar’s
Staff Club today. Persons can also contact Irshad
Mohamed on tel. 664-1650 and Shiv Nandalall on tel
225-8270 or 623-7723.

Anand v Svidler

Anand seems to be pulling away from the field in the
World Championship tournament currently being played
in Mexico City. He leads on points folowing two
victories after six games. Here he outplays Peter
Svidler in the Marshall Attack of the Ruy Lopez.

Karabakh: Fearing Of Complete Collapse, Baku Agreed To Ceasefire In

KARABAKH: FEARING OF COMPLETE COLLAPSE, BAKU AGREED TO CEASEFIRE IN 1994

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ The less UN member states know about frozen
conflicts the better is for the initiators of issues of the kind,"
former Russian Co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group, Ambassador Vladimir
Kazimirov said in an interview with PanARMENIAN.Net.

"However, Azerbaijan will not derive clear profit from this
move. Azeris will mount their hobby-horse and urge implementation of
the UN Security Council’s resolution on Karabakh. But how are they
going to conceal that they failed to fulfill all UN demand except
for ceasefire. It’s worth mentioning that this provision was observed
partially, for hostilities have been suspended but incidents are still
provoked. It was Baku that upset 4 agreements in 1993-94. Documents
are available. It’s not accidental that after Baku’s violating the
ceasefire in 1993, the UN Security Council stopped to issue resolutions
on Karabakh. What is a year of war? How many people died? How many
people left their homes? The Azerbaijani population suffered from
non-fulfillment of the resolutions most of all. Not the resolutions
but the fear of complete collapse made Baku agree to ceasefire. Other
facts can also come to light in the UN General Assembly. So, GUAM
member states will not have an easy deal in New York," he said.

BENNELONG ARMENIANS TO GATHER FOR GENOCIDE RECOGNITION

SYDNEY: Eastwood Park will host a large gathering of Armenian-Australians in
support of awareness and recognition of the Armenian Genocide. The
community’s 4000-strong voters in the electorate of Bennelong are shaping as
critical to the hopes of candidates in the upcoming Australian federal
election.

Nationwide media outlets have afforded much coverage to the seat of
Bennelong where sitting member Prime Minister John Howard faces a spirited
challenge by high-profile Labor candidate Ms Maxine McKew. A Sydney Morning
Herald article this week mentioned that the Armenian Australian community
represented a critical mass in Bennelong and "…in a tight election, the
Armenian vote will count big time".

Ms McKew recently met with a delegation of the Armenian National Committee
of Australia (ANC Australia) to discuss issues of concern to the
Armenian-Australian community. At the community’s request, the Prime
Minister has agreed to a similar meeting with ANC Australia in the lead up
to the election.

Armenian Family Day – A Rally for Genocide Recognition will be held on
October 14, at Eastwood Park’s Lower Oval to raise awareness of the
atrocities of genocide.

"It is the obligation of every Armenian-Australian to advocate awareness and
recognition of genocide," ANC Australia President, Mr. Varant Meguerditchian
announced. "As children and grandchildren of genocide survivors, we must
work toward ensuring that the experiences of the Armenians, Jews, Cambodians
and Rwandans are never allowed to be repeated."

Politicians, public figures and community representatives will be present
amongst the estimated 1000 attendees at the event. Armenian Family Day – A
Rally for Genocide Recognition will provide an opportunity for supporters of
genocide recognition to address the community regarding this sensitive
issue.

During the last days of the Ottoman Empire, the Government implemented a
policy of Genocide upon its Christian Armenian population. As a result, up
to 1.5million Armenian men, women and children lost their lives between 1915
and 1922. Adding weight to the importance of recognising the Armenian
Genocide is the research conducted by the Australian Institute for Holocaust
and Genocide Studies that discovered records of the Australia’s humanitarian
assistance to Armenians following the genocide and testimonies by ANZAC
soldiers to atrocities against the Armenians as they occurred. In 1997 the
Parliament of New South Wales became the first legislative body to recognise
and condemn the Genocide of the Armenians.

It is possible that the presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan will meet
in early October in Dushanbe during the CIS summit, said the speaker
of the Armenian president Victor Soghomonyan on September 14. "I
cannot exclude. It will become clear after the visit of the co-chairs.

I mean the expediency and the details that the presidents will be
discussing. At least I think the meeting will not be an end in itself.

I think the meeting will take place if there is something to discuss,"
Victor Soghomonyan said.

ARMENIAN-TURKISH BORDER WILL REMAIN CLOSED UNTIL TURKEY’S DE JURE RECOGNITION OF REPUBLIC OF ARMENIA

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ "There is a habit to think that everything will go
well after the opening of the Armenian-Turkish border. It won’t. Open
border is just a result of normalization of the Armenia-Turkey
relations. I am confident that our Foreign Ministry has chosen
the right way. Turkey says it recognized independent Armenia in
1992. However, it was de facto recognition only," diplomat and
historian Ara Papian said in an interview with PanARMENIAN.Net.

"We should not forget about security issues either. If the border
problem is settled in compliance with the arbitration award, Armenia
can raise the issue of demilitarization of Turkey’s near-border
provinces, what supposes presence of international observers and
exclusion of any aggression against Armenia," he continued.

"The Kars-Akhalkalaki-Baku railroad is a menace, since Turkey obtains
the possibility to supply Azerbaijan with weapons. The greater is
amount of armament in the region, the more possible is war. All
are interested in stability in the region, except for Turkey, which
hasn’t identified itself so far and is terrified by the outlook to
lose territories. The idea of territorial integrity, so artificially
cherished by the government, will sooner or later lead to decline of
the state," he said.

450 Thousand Tourists Toward Armenia

450 THOUSAND TOURISTS TOWARD ARMENIA

Lragir.am
13-09-2007 15:19:18

On September 13 the Armenian government adopted the program of
development of tourism. This annual program is adopted for the fourth
year on, and the purpose is to coordinate the goals and subprograms,
programs implemented in separate spheres, estimate and perform the
costs, said Ara Petrosyan, deputy minister of trade and economic
development in today’s briefing. He also said as of the first half of
2007 over 180 tourists visited Armenia, which is up by about a record
36 percent. The government expects 450 thousand tourists this year.

"This program, the development program for 2008, also involves a 20
percent growth, which is the average rate of growth for the past few
years. We are hopeful to receive 500 thousand tourists next year," Ara
Petrosyan said. According to him, this expectation is quite realistic.

Ara Petrosyan says the program of 2008 involves some changes regarding
the international advertisement of Armenia. In other words, besides
advertising on TV channels broadcast worldwide there will be also
local, target advertisement campaigns. Ara Petrosyan says separate
countries will be chosen where Armenia will be advertised. Ara
Petrosyan says the government has foreseen to spend as much money for
the development of tourism in 2008 as in the past years. For instance,
in 2007 about 250 million dollars was spent. In 2008 the government
plans to spend more but if the parliament does not affirm the boosted
assignment, 250 million will be kept by all means.
