YEREVAN, JULY 26, ARMENPRESS. The airplane carrying the Armenian citizens from Hurghada landed at Zvartnots airport.

ARMENPRESS reports 132 people returned to Armenia.

132 Armenian citizens were left in Hurghada due to the cancellation of OTF 3703 flight en route Hurghada-Yerevan. According to some reports, the flight was cancelled because the Armenian A&R tour agency didn’t pay the Greek Orange Fly airline to carry out the flight. Hurghada-Yerevan July 29 flight has also been cancelled, which means that nearly 100 Armenian citizens will face the same problem. The flights are funded by the Government of Armenia.

The Embassy of Armenia in Egypt urges the citizens of Armenia spending their holiday in Hurghada to suspend their holiday and return to Armenia by July 29 flight.  “The Armenian Embassy in Egypt informs that Hurghada-Yerevan OTF 3701 flight will be carried out at 03:00, Egypt time. At the same time we urge the passengers whose flights are scheduled on August 1 and 5 to suspend their holiday and fly to Armenia by the mentioned flight”, reads the statement.

The Government of Armenia discusses allocating 47 million and 198 thousand AMD from the reserve fund of the Foreign Ministry for organizing the return of the remaining 119 citizens.

The Police of Armenia is preparing materials over the activities of the A&R tour agency.

Zaruhi Batoyan is “determined” to combat domestic violence

Zaruhi Batoyan is “determined” to combat domestic violence

“Human Rights Watch plays a vital role in protection of the rights of children, women and other vulnerable groups in Armenia. We attached significance to your analyses and studies, particularly those that concern deinstitutionalization, inclusive education, and children in state care. Their importance is such that we include them in the basis of our future policies,” said Zaruhi Batoyan.

According to her, the ministry is especially “determined” to prevent domestic violence and violence against women. Zaruhi Batoryan has highlighted the importance of cooperation with international organizations in this regard.

She has also pointed out that recently the Armenian government approved a draft law, submitted by the Ministry of Labor, which launches two key processes: establishment of requirements to the shelters for domestic violence survivors and the shelter staff, and provision of financial aid to the survivors. “We believe that a traditional Armenian family is built on love and respect, and the state must support families that find themselves in a difficult situation,” added Zaruhi Batoyan.

“We might not share the same views on every issue sometimes, but the understanding that our common goal is to protect human rights is unchanging. We hope that our further cooperation will remain on the same foundation,” said Rachel Denber.

Here’s another set of pages

That has not been used yet

Cheers, feelings

They are not recorded below

Like me and you. . . felt

Loves that remained unborn

Trapped in volcanic hearts

Covered in impenetrable goodness

Where should I keep these notebooks?

That suddenly the unwritten words will not appear

Do not let the unrecorded thoughts appear

The unspoken words will be forgotten

They will not come true. . .

Maine lawmaker with Armenian roots to run for Congress seat

PanArmenian, Armenia

PanARMENIAN.Net – Maine House Speaker Sara Gideon, a Democrat with Armenian roots, is expected to formally announce in the coming weeks that she’s running for Republican Sen. Susan Collins’ seat in 2020, five Democratic sources confirmed, according to HuffPost.

She will likely launch her campaign shortly after the close of the state’s legislative session on June 19, the three Democratic sources in Maine and two national Democratic strategists said.

Defeating Collins, the Maine moderate who infuriated liberals with her vote to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, is key to Democratic hopes of winning back control of the Senate in 2020. Gideon is a top-tier recruit for the race and is expected to have at least the tacit backing of establishment groups like the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and EMILY’s List.

At the same time, the Senate GOP is marshaling its resources to defend Collins, who has long outperformed other Republicans on the ballot in Maine.

Gideon hinted last October that she would toss her hat in the ring following Collins’ controversial vote for Kavanaugh.

“Maine deserves a champion in the US Senate,” Gideon wrote in a Facebook post at the time. “After November I will be seriously considering how I can elevate the voices of people who deserve and demand to be heard and represented in Washington, DC.”

Gideon, a 47-year-old mother of three, has served in the Maine House of Representatives since 2012, representing the towns of Freeport and Pownal. Her legislative initiatives have focused on boosting the state’s economy, tackling the opioid crisis, investing in sustainable energy and increasing access to universal health care.

Earlier this week, Maine Gov. Janet Mills (D) signed a bill sponsored by Gideon that expands access to abortion in the state by allowing health care professionals who are not doctors ― such as nurse practitioners and physician assistants ― to perform the procedure.

Gideon is a graduate of George Washington University and the daughter of an Indian immigrant father and a second-generation Armenian American mother.

YEREVAN, JUNE 6, ARMENPRESS. Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan, who is in Russia’s St. Petersburg city met with Russian President Vladimir Putin at Konstantinovsky Palace, ARMENPRESS was informed from the Offic of the Prime Minister of Armenia.

”Honorable Nikol Vladimirovich, dear partners, friends,

Advertisement 14

I am very glad to welcome you once again, this time in St. Petersburg. I have no doubts that it will be interesting for you and I hope also useful for you to participate in the discussions of the St. Petersburg Economic Forum. It is a very good platform for meeting with partners and discussing and exchanging views on economic issues, speaking about a range of issues of political nature. In my opinion we have a useful and serious event. I see no necessity to speak about our bilateral relations, since we do it regularly. Recently we met, discussed a lot of issues and had the opportunity to talk about everything.

I want to remind that Russia is the leading trade and economic partner of Armenia – 26%, nearly 2 billion USD investments and many other things that show the special and partnering nature of our relations», Vladimir Putin said.

Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan said, ”I am thankful Vladimir Vladimirovich. I am very glad to meet you again in St. Petersburg. Last time we met in Nur-Sultan, while we first met a year ago and we had numerous meetings during this one year. In fact, we have talked about all the possible issues of our common agenda. I think our relations develop steadily.

As you mentioned, we have strategic, partnering relations and this for not only bilateral relations, but we also actively cooperate in the sidelines of the EAEU, CIS and CSTO and I think all these directions have strategic importance for our countries.  I am very glad we have the opportunity to comprehensively develop our relations in these directions.

I want to say that this year we have recorded quite optimistic economic indexes. We have recorded 7.1% economic growth by the results of the 1st quarter of the year. In April our index of economic activity amounted to 9.2%. Why am I talking about this? Because it’s obvious that these are good indexes not only for Armenia, but also for the EAEU, because our economic indexes in many cases depend on our relations in the EAEU and the availableness of the Russian market for the Armenian business. This is very important.

I hope we will be able to reach decisions over a number of issues that will not hinder this positive economic tendency. I want to say that we also have growth in the number of tourists this year who visit Armenia from Russia. And now everywhere in Armenia, be it the capital city or other touristic centers one can hear the Russian language. It’s very peasant. When meeting them I always ask them how they feel in Armenia. I want to note with confidence that Russian tourists feel very good in Armenia. And it’s obvious that more and more Russian tourists will vist our country. Thi is of course very pleasant, since I think it’s not only an economic issue but is also about cultural and humanitarian links. Such interactions, in my opinion, foster our political and economic relations”.

During the meeting the interlocutors discussed the issues on the Armenian-Russian agenda. Particilarly, the sides discussed the future coopration in different spheres of the economy, the future activities of the inter-governmental commission. The sides highlighted high-level meetings.

168: Why did businessman Samvel Aleksanyan decide to change the way of paying taxes?

Category
BUSINESS & ECONOMY

The State Revenue Committee of Armenia has finally released the list of large taxpayers of the first quarter of this year. The fees of the organizations in the list have risen, but there are still oddities in terms of tax revenues.

Based on the list released by the State Revenue Committee, in the first quarter, 1,000 large taxpayers paid a total of AMD 212.2 billion in taxes (33.6 billion more than the previous year). There is almost 19% growth, and unquestionably, this is a high and even record-setting indicator.

Perhaps it is necessary to ask the State Revenue Committee how it managed to record such a high growth indicator when there is only 6.5% economic activity. If this is truly at the expense of the reduction of shadow economy, then indeed, this is commendable. But if the tax authorities achieved this through known and unknown methods, we can only express concern, especially since there are some grounds for this. Revenues with minus signs are more often seen in the releases of the State Revenue Committee recently, but this hadn’t been seen in the list of large taxpayers to this day.

For example, how can we understand that the profit tax of the Transgaz Company made up AMD -22.9 billion in the first quarter of the year? How is it that the City Company (belonging to former oligarch Samvel Aleksanyan who has close ties with the new authorities) paid AMD -986 million in income taxes in the first quarter? Does this mean Samvel Aleksanyan has to pay dues to the budget or the opposite?

Of course, this is not the only interesting episode related to this businessman in the list of large taxpayers.

Aleksanyan’s Alex Holding, which fulfilled its tax obligations of more than AMD 3.3 billion in the first quarter of last year, paid only AMD 132.4 million to the State Budget in the same period of this year. Basically, the company paid 25 times less. This might seem surprising at first sight, but this is the case.

This is the case because, in new Armenia, this businessman has decided to show that he is fulfilling his tax obligations in a new way, that is, under the name of not one, but several companies. It is a fact that Aleksanyan would constantly do business under the name of several organizations in the past as well, and it is clear that this is not an end in itself.

It seems as though there is a new company that will replace Alex Holding as well. Right after shift of power in Armenia, the businessman registered a new company (Alex & Holding), which is expanding its activities more and more.

Although it worked for a couple of months, it paid an AMD 2.8 billion tax last year, and the main part — at the end of the year. In the fourth quarter, the company’s taxes made up nearly AMD 2.2 billion.

The company started working actively in the beginning of this year as well. In the first quarter, Alex & Holding paid AMD 1 billion 332 million to the State Budget, of which more than AMD 1.2 billion was customs tax. This means the company imported products. As a matter of fact, out of the paid AMD 1.3 billion, only AMD 5.7 million was profit tax.

City Company, one of the other companies of the businessman, has paid AMD 1 billion 339 million in taxes. Since the taxes paid by the City supermarkets last year were included in the payments of Alex Holding, now it is impossible to say whether the taxes increased or decreased. The same goes for the other companies. Perhaps Alex Textile is an exception. Like last year, it was separate this year as well. It fulfilled a tax obligation of AMD 326 million, which is almost 2.4 times more than the previous year.

Since we talked about one of the well-known businessmen in the list of large taxpayers, let’s also touch upon the taxes paid by other well-known businessmen.

Recently, Ararat Cement Factory, which is the target of the government, paid AMD 374 million to the State Budget in the first quarter, and this has increased by AMD 124 million. Onira Club, another company owned by Gagik Tsarukyan, has paid AMD 1 billion 232 million in taxes, and this is AMD 53 million more than the previous year. The growth is particularly seen in the case of Multi-Leon and Multi Gas. In the first three months of the year, the first company paid more than AMD 259 million, the second — AMD 210 million. Multi-Leon’s taxes have increased by 2.9 times and Multi Gas company’s taxes have risen by 3.6 times.

The owners of Grand Holding have particularly advanced in terms of tax payments. In the first quarter of this year, Grand Tobacco paid more than AMD 12.8 billion compared to the AMD 8 billion last year. In other words, the company’s taxes increased by nearly 60%. Compared to the AMD 2 billion last year, International Masis Tabak paid AMD 3.9 billion to the budget, and this is almost two times more.

Why are these tobacco companies actively paying taxes? This is not clear. Let’s simply state the fact that, based on official data, in the first quarter of this year, Armenia has seen a 10% growth of tobacco production, while cigarette production has not grown.

One can notice a tendency of reduction of taxes paid by telecommunication companies in the list of large taxpayers, and this is rather sharply expressed in the case of certain companies.

Compared to the AMD 1.6 billion of the past year, in the first quarter of this year, MTS Armenia only paid AMD 199 million, meaning 8 times less. Veno Armenia transferred AMD 518 million to the budget, which is 2.5 times less than last year.

Ucom is the leader in terms of paid taxes and has paid more than AMD 1.9 billion, even though the company has paid fewer taxes. In the first quarter of last year, Ucom paid nearly AMD 2.5 billion in taxes.

In the spheres of import and realization of petrol and diesel fuel, unlike CPS Oil Corporation, the paid taxes of which have dropped, Flash Company’s transfers have increased by AMD 1.1 billion. Max Petrol has sharply advanced in the market — compared to AMD 292 million paid last year, this year, the company paid almost AMD 2.6 billion in taxes. Instead, Rosneft Armenia paid only AMD 199 million in taxes, which is less than last year’s taxes by AMD 155 million.

Like last year, Gazprom Armenia is on the top of the list of large taxpayers this year as well, even though the company has even reduced its taxes this year. The negative difference is higher in Transgaz’s case — AMD 1.7 billion compared to AMD 1.9 billion last year.

Another important fact: although the large taxpayers’ payments have increased by at least 19% this year, there has been almost no change in terms of profit tax. With respect to this type of tax, the payments of 1,000 taxpayers have made up AMD 22.9 billion compared to the AMD 22.4 billion of last year.

Prof. Ze’evi Talks to TNH about The Thirty-Year Genocide

The National Herald, Greece
May 5 2019

The Thirty-Year Genocide: Turkey’s Destruction of Its Christian Minorities, 1894-1924 by Benny Morris and Dror Ze’evi is a reappraisal of the giant massacres perpetrated by the Ottoman Empire, and then the Turkish Republic, against their Christian minorities. Previous books have examined the genocides against the Armenians, Assyrians, and Greeks separately or focused only on the period of 1913-1923, but The Thirty-Year Genocide is the first account to show that the three were actually one intentional effort to rid Anatolia of its Christian population.

This well researched book by Morris, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Middle Eastern Studies at Ben Gurion University of the Negev, and Ze’evi, Professor in the Department of Middle Eastern Studies at Ben Gurion University of the Negev, is a must read for anyone interested in the tragic events and history which inevitably shaped the modern world.

Professor Morris has published books about the history of the Zionist–Arab conflict and has also written about the conflict in the New York Review of Books, New York Times, New Republic, and The Guardian. Professor Ze’evi has published several books on Ottoman and Middle Eastern history.

As noted in the book’s description, between 1894 and 1924, three waves of violence swept across Anatolia, targeting the region’s Christian minorities, who had previously accounted for 20 percent of the population. By 1924, the Armenians, Assyrians, and Greeks had been reduced to 2 percent. Most historians have treated these waves as distinct, isolated events, and successive Turkish governments presented them as an unfortunate sequence of accidents. The Thirty-Year Genocide is the first account to show that the three were actually part of a single, continuing, and intentional effort to wipe out Anatolia’s Christian population.

The years in question, the most violent in the recent history of the region, began during the reign of the Ottoman sultan Abdulhamid II, continued under the Young Turks, and ended during the first years of the Turkish Republic founded by Ataturk. Yet despite the dramatic swing from the Islamizing autocracy of the sultan to the secularizing republicanism of the post–World War I period, the nation’s annihilationist policies were remarkably constant, with continual recourse to premeditated mass killing, homicidal deportation, forced conversion, mass rape, and brutal abduction. And one thing more was a constant: the rallying cry of jihad. While not justified under the teachings of Islam, the killing of two million Christians was effected through the calculated exhortation of the Turks to create a pure Muslim nation.

The National Herald contacted Professor Ze’evi for comment about the book and he took time out of his busy schedule to answer a few questions via email.

TNH: How long did it take to put the book together from idea to publication?

Prof. Dror Ze’evi: We started thinking about this project about nine years ago. In the beginning, our aim was to study the Armenian genocide during World War I, but as we delved into the research, we understood that the wartime Armenian tragedy was only part of a much larger saga of torment and suffering that lasted three decades and destroyed the Christian communities in Asia Minor – Armenians, Greeks, and Assyrians. The huge scope of this tragedy, in both space and time, led us to this nine-year research journey.

TNH: What was the most challenging aspect and also the most rewarding aspect of writing this book?

DZ: Our research took us to many archives in many countries, including the United States, Turkey, Britain, France, and Germany. In all these archives we found large quantities of primary sources. For me the most challenging aspect of writing the book was sifting through these mountains of material, comparing them, and sometimes combining, say, a deportation telegram from the Turkish Interior ministry with the report of a German consul and a letter written by an American missionary to create the narrative. Most rewarding was understanding that all these documents told a lucid and incontrovertible story and that they clearly complemented and completed each other.

TNH: What projects are you working on next?

DZ: We just finished this long and often exhausting project, and at the moment we are still writing articles and lecturing about it around the world. But I have no doubt that we will both continue to write about the fascinating history of our neck of the woods.

The Thirty-Year Genocide: Turkey’s Destruction of Its Christian Minorities, 1894–1924 by Benny Morris and Dror Ze’evi, published by the Harvard University Press, is available in bookstores and online.
