Yuri Khachaturov: We do not want war, but we want to be respected

ARMINFO
Armenia – June 3 2022
Marianna Mkrtchyan

ArmInfo. We don’t want war, but we want to be respected. Former Secretary General of the CSTO, former Chief of the General Staff of Armenia, Colonel-General Yuri  Khachaturov stated from the rostrum on France Square in Yerevan.

At the beginning of his speech, the Armenian general spoke about the  background of the resignation of first President of Armenia Levon  Ter-Petrosyan on February 3, 1998, when Prime Minister Robert  Kocharyan, Minister of Defense Vazgen Sargsyan and Minister of  Internal Affairs and National Security Serzh Sargsyan did not support  Ter-Petrosyan’s proposed plan for settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh  conflict, which included the demilitarization of the conflict zone  and the return to Azerbaijan of a number of settlements taken during  the hostilities of 1992-1994.

“Then they said that people will come to power, whose coming will  cause bloodshed, that there would be a war. And what really happened?  We lived in peace for 20 years, lived like winners. We were proud of  our army and state. There was no war. They said we want war, but we  didn’t want war. Even now they say we want war, but we don’t want  war, we want to be respected,” he said.

At the same time, Khachaturov expressed bewilderment at the behavior  of officials and parliamentarians from the ruling power when they are  asked a question about the future of Artsakh. “I don’t understand  these ministers and the rest officials, they are asked a simple  question. Are you in favor of Artsakh being part of Azerbaijan? They  say we cannot answer. I understand that they can do nothing to  prevent Artsakh from becoming part of Azerbaijan, but at least say  that you do not want NKR to be part of Azerbaijan. Can’t you do that,  aren’t you Armenian? “Then who are you?” He asked.

Khachaturov also bowed before the parents of the soldiers who died  for the homeland, calling them saints, while urging them not to  condemn those who did not come to the square. According to him, each  of them experiences the pain of loss in their own way.

Referring to the work of law enforcement officers, the general  expressed bewilderment and indignation at the behavior of people in  uniform. He shamed all those law enforcement officers who use  disproportionate brute force against peaceful demonstrators,  especially women.

“When did we get to the point where the police drag women by the  hair, kick them in the stomach? Guys, behave more modestly, remember  that you are all in the field of view of our citizens,” he said,  adding that they would not succumb to the provocations of law  enforcement officers and will not beat law enforcement officers in  response. According to him, the authorities are just waiting for  this.  “Don’t wait, we won’t beat you. Viva Armenia, Viva Artsakh,  Viva the Armenian people,” Khachaturov summed up.

It should be noted that a rally of the opposition Resistance Movement  is taking place in France Square.  It should also be noted that the  Armenian parliament today at 16:00 convened an extraordinary meeting  at the request of the “Hayastan” and “I have the honor” opposition  factions. On the agenda is the discussion and adoption of a statement  on Armenian-Turkish and Armenian-Azerbaijani relations. The meeting  did not take place due to the lack of a quorum. Only 33 opposition  MPs attended the meeting, while 54 MPs  were needed for a quorum.   The ruling Civil Contract faction announced last week that it would  not take part in an extraordinary meeting of the Armenian parliament,  initiated by the “Hayastan” and “I have the honor” opposition blocs  and scheduled for June 3. The Civil Contract stated that they would  not succumb to political blackmail and would not take part in an  extraordinary meeting, but would continue to protect the rights of  Artsakh and its population at all levels and platforms.

LOS ANGELES— Friends of the Armenian National Committee of America–Western Region held a fundraising event in support of California Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis’s re-election campaign. The event was attended by friends of ANCA-WR, ANCA-WR board members, and representatives of the Armenian American community in California.

“Lieutenant Governor Kounalakis has been a dedicated friend to the Armenian-American community, so we are proud to support her re-election,” remarked Chair of the ANCA-WR Board of Directors, Nora Hovsepian, Esq. “We are grateful for the Lieutenant Governor’s principled positions on the Armenian Genocide and Artsakh over the years and her dedication to the empowerment of Armenian-Americans in California.”

During the event, Lieutenant Governor Kounalakis had an honest discussion about issues concerning the Armenian community in California, including the integration challenges faced by Armenian immigrants, the challenges facing Armenian youth in California, the rising levels of cost-of-living, poverty and homelessness, as well as the security threats posed by Turkey and Azerbaijan against the Republics of Armenia and Artsakh.

“It has been an honor to represent California’s vibrant Armenian community during my tenure as Lieutenant Governor,” said Kounalakis during the event. “The contributions Armenian-Americans have made to our state over generations is a testament to their hard work and their dedication to the pursuit of the American Dream.”

Kounalakis, who previously served as the United States Ambassador to Hungary from 2010 to 2013, was the first Greek-American woman ever to serve as a U.S. ambassador, and is the author of “Madam Ambassador: Three Years of Diplomacy, Dinner Parties, and Democracy in Budapest.”

During the fundraising event, Lieutenant Governor Kounalakis recalled the events of August 2012, when Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán suddenly repatriated Ramil Safarov, an Azeri serving a life term in Hungary for hacking an Armenian soldier (Lt. Gurgen Margaryan) to death during a NATO-sponsored training program. She reiterated that PM Orban’s decision to repatriate the axe murderer to Azerbaijan ended Hungary’s two-decade status as a reliable strategic partner of the United States.

The fundraising event in support of Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis was hosted at the prestigious City Club of Los Angeles by longtime ANCA-WR supporter Michael Mahdesian. Mahdesian is currently Chairman of the Board of Servicon Systems, Inc., a business based in Los Angeles. He has previously served as the Deputy Assistant Administrator for USAID’s Bureau of Humanitarian Response between 1993 and 2000 and was the former Executive Director of the United Armenian Fund’s airlift to the 1988 earthquake victims in Armenia.

“We thank Mr. Mahdesian for his forty-years of support to ANCA-WR’s efforts to deliver justice for the Armenian Genocide and security to the people of Armenia and Artsakh,” said Levon Kirakosian, Esq., ANCA-WR Board Advisor.

The ANCA-WR endorsed Lieutenant Governor Kounalakis on April 19, 2022. The primary elections are set to take place on June 7, while the General Elections are scheduled for November 8.

Over the past several months, ANCA-WR has been announcing its endorsements as it works tirelessly to ensure issues of significance to the Armenian-American community are addressed by candidates ahead of the upcoming elections.

ARS of Eastern USA hosts virtual regional seminar

More than 50 ARS members participated in a webinar hosted by the Armenian Relief Society (ARS) of Eastern USA on Saturday, May 14. Regional chairperson Caroline Chamavonian welcomed dozens of chapter members to the seminar, thanked them for their participation and encouraged them to share their knowledge with fellow ARS members.

Chamavonian introduced the first presenter Simon Maghakyan, a Denver-based researcher and community organizer. Maghakyan discussed how he has been independently investigating Azerbaijan’s ongoing erasure of Armenian culture since 2005. His exploration of Azerbaijan’s erasure of Nakhichevan’s Armenian heritage in light of the Artsakh War engendered a conversation about the fate of Armenian cultural heritage sites that have come under Azeri control after the ceasefire agreement and what can be done to prevent further destruction.

Verginie Touloumian, former executive director of the ARS and current community outreach director of the ANCA-WR and marketing director of the ARS of Eastern USA, presented on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Touloumian offered a snapshot of ARS global and regional activities and programs and simultaneously reported on the organization’s overall progress towards the 17 goals. “By implementing these projects, the ARS is not just serving its noble mission, it’s literally changing the world,” said Touloumian.

Dr. Tro Kalayjian, an internal medicine and obesity physician, presented about low-carb and ketogenic diets and how they can conquer the cravings that challenge efforts to lose weight. He presented his own personal experience of losing 150 pounds and offered advice on lifestyle changes.

After a brief break, Dr. Yeraz Markarian, a licensed clinical psychologist and the founder and executive director of Healthy Mind New York, took the stage to discuss the psychological and emotional impact of the pandemic and the 2020 Artsakh War. Her presentation focused on how to use hope and other important mechanisms to achieve resilience-building.

ARS Cambridge “Shushi” Chapter member Artvine Torossian also presented. Torossian is the founder of Karaka, a wellbeing, lifestyle and management consulting company. She shared creative ways each person can work toward achieving individual and collective significance, peace and happiness, one “character” at a time. Her methods are designed to guide each person to seek authenticity, leadership and wellbeing.

Each presenter had the opportunity to answer questions from audience members.

The productive seminar stressed the importance of having a healthy mind and body in order to achieve a resilient community and continue serving the homeland and humanity.
