Diyarbakır – BİA News Center
10 August 2009, Monday

On 6 August, Armenian-Kurdish musician Aram Tigran died in Athens,
Greece.

Fırat Anlı, Diyarbakır province chair of the Democratic Society
Party (DTP) and member of the funeral organisation committee, told
bianet that the funeral mass would take place either today (10 August)
or tomorrow, in the Armenian church in Diyarbakır.

Tigran will then be buried in the Armenian graveyard.

Anlı said that Tigran had previously expressed a wish to be buried in
his place of birth, in Al-Qamishli, Syria.

However, after participating in a culture and arts festival in
Diyarbakır last year and spending around two months in the city on
this visit, he told his family and people in the city that he wanted
to be buried there.

"Tears in their eyes"

Anlı finds this very meaningful: "Tigran is almost the first name
that comes to mind when one speaks about Kurdish music. Everyone over
a certain age in this region got to know music in their mother tongue
because of Tigran, with his soft, emotional tunes, and the oud he was
a master of.

"It was our greatest dream for him to come to Diyarbakır and play at
a concert. It took us years to achieve it. Previously, the situation
in Turkey made20it impossible; he himself hesitated. But his first
arrival was a historical event, like a dream. Thousands of people had
tears in their eyes when they listened to him."

"Diyarbakır is a mythological city, one of the most important,
multilingual, multicultural cities of Mesopotamia. It is very
meaningful that artists and intellectuals who have worked for this
place, who have agonised with it, want to be laid to rest here."

"We want Diyarbakır to be a meeting point for artists and
intellectuals while they are still alive; we invite them to
Diyarbakır, the capital of peace, brotherhood and freedom."

"Diyarbakır, I have missed you"

During his stay in Diyarbakır, Tigran gave an interview to Aknews,
saying that he loved Diyarbakır very much. He said, "It was the dream
of the century to come to Diyarbakır. I always used to say, ‘God,
will I ever see the place where my parents lived before I die?’ Two
years ago, after becoming a Greek citizen, I first came to
Diyarbakır. I was very touched and wrote a song. One verse of it goes
like this (in Kurdish):

‘Di xewnên Å=9Fevan de min bawer nedikir (If I had dreamed it, I
would not have believed it) / Bi çavan bibînim bajarê Diyarbekir
(Being able to see Diyarbakır) / RojbaÅ=9F Diyarbekir me pir bêriya
te kir (Good morning Diyarbakır, I have missed you very much) / Te
derî li me vekir (You opened your gates to me) / Te me Å=9Fa kir (You
made us very happy)."

Tigran also visited the villages of Bêemde (Kexriban in Armenian) and
Kaskê, where his parents had been born. He said about these visits,
"When I looked at the mountains, trees, streams and houses, my inside
was shaking. I cried. I was extremely pained. I remembered what my
father, my mother, what they experienced. I was saddened and bemoaned
the fact that we had not grown up on this soil."

Who was Aram Tigran?

Born in Syria in 1934, Tigran sang in Arabic, Armenian, Kurdish and
Turkish. His father had been saved in what the Armenians call the
"Great Disaster" of 1915.

Tigran’s interest in music and the oud began at the age of nine.

In 1966 he moved to Yerevan, Armenia’s capital, and worked for Erivan
Radio for 18 years. After 1995, he moved to Athens.

This year, he took part in Diyarbakır’s 9th Culture and Arts
Festival, but because of ill health he only performed three Kurdish
songs.

During Newroz celebrations in Batman last year, Tigran sang songs in
Kurdish, Turkish, Armenian and Arabic. He also sang the "Sarı Gelin"
song in memory of assassinated journalist and human rights activist
Hrant Dink. (TK/AG)

USA refuse to solve issue of Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict

Baku, Fineko/abc.az. Hopes on the peaceful settlement of
Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict melting with every
minute. If conducted under an aegis of Russian president Dmitry
Medvedev the process of direct negotiations between Armenian and
Azerbaijani presidents does not produce results, there will be nothing
for Azerbaijan, except for the power redintegration of Nagorno
Karabakh, because the USA refused to solve the problem of this
territory.

Matthew Bryza? co-chair of the OSCE Minsk group on the settlement of
Karabakh conflict stated that Armenia should return to Azerbaijan
seven regions, bordering Karabakh and occupied in 1992-1994.

Five regions should be returned immediately, and two ` in time. This
time can last till five years. International peacemaking forces, the
structure of which mainly will be defined by the parties also should
be placed in the area of conflict,’ Ð`.Bryza said.

He does not actually put a question on the terms of returning of
Nagorno Karabakh to the Azerbaijanian statehood.

In accordance with to the Madrid document, safety of population of
Nagorno Karabakha should be provided and temporal status should be
created till conducting of referendum. The parties should find
decision which will be based on three fundamental principles of the
Helsinki Act. It is a right of people of self-determination,
territorial integrity and non-use force», `
Ð`.Ð`Ñай&#x D0;·Ð° said.

According to him, principles of settlement are developed, and renewed
version of document will be presented.to Armenian and Azerbaijani
presidents.

Earlier Armenia stated that Karabakh had decided its fate and would
not cede an inch of «its land» to Azerbaijan. In his turn,
Azerbaijan ambassador to Russia Polad Bulbuloglu put a question on
forcing of aggressor (Armenia) to peace, if problem of Nagorno
Karabakh not to be solved during negotiations.

Under such conditions, the idea to place peacemakers round Nagorno
Karabakh implies creation of pillow of safety for the aggressor,
Azerbaijan, probably will not consent to it.

The conflict began 20 years ago and the regime of cessation of arms
has operated since May, 1994. As a result of the conflict, Azerbaijan
has lost control over 20% of own territory, and 1 million persons of
non-Armenian nationality (Azerbaijanis, Kurds, Russians and etc) were
driven out from Armenia and occupied Azerbaijani territories.

BAKU (APA)-Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry demanded an explanation
from Microsoft Corporation for categorizing Nagorno-Karabakh as
an independent state on its portal MSN.com, the APA news services
reported Wednesday.

The site’s search listings for the weather in Nagorno-Karabakh
does not include "Azerbaijan" as the country of location; rather
the territory exists on its own. MSN.com, however, places the word
"disputed" in parentheses after Nagorno-Karabakh’s name, but also used
the Azerbaijani name for Karabakh’s capital. (Khankendi; Karabakh’s
government uses the Armenian Stepanakert – ed).

Baku has tasked its embassy in the United States to seek an explanation
from Seattle-based Microsoft, the APA report said

BAKU: Politicians And MPs Of Azerbaijan Make Different Suggestions O

POLITICIANS AND MPS OF AZERBAIJAN MAKE DIFFERENT SUGGESTIONS ON WAYS OF SOLVING NAGORNO-KARABAKH CONFLICT

Trend
Aug 4 2009
Azerbaijan

Politicians and MPs of Azerbaijan made different suggestions on the
ways of solving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

The chairman of opposition Unified Azerbaijan Popular Front Party, MP
Gudrat Hasanguliyev, said that fair solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh
conflict through peaceful talks does not exist.

"No fact of occupation in the world found a fair solution in a
peaceful manner. Azerbaijan must itself liberate seven regions
around Nagorno-Karabakh, and then resume the negotiations. And
politicians should prepare nation for this," Hasanguliyev said at the
scientific-theoretical conference on "The role and tasks of political
parties and NGOs in solving the Karabakh conflict".

The MP said that the opposition parties, which undertook obligations
before the Council of Europe to resolve the conflict peacefully,
should abandon their signature.

"The reasons why they do not do it are clear. They think if they
withdraw signature, West will refuse cooperation," said Hasanguliyev.

Making a speech at the conference, chairman of opposition Adalat
Party, MP Ilyas Ismaylov said he did not see anything improper in
undertaking such an obligation. "Application of a peaceful path to
resolving conflicts is an international principle. But if the conflict
is able to be settled through refusal from signature, then I will do
it first," said Ismaylov.

Chairman of opposition Democratic Party Sardar Jalaloglu said that
the solution of the conflict must be made in a legal plane.

"Resolution of the conflict should be moved from political into legal
arena. International mediators do not participate permanently in any
of conflicts existing in the world. Mediators deal with only those
that delay the conflict, ensuring the interests of their countries,"
he said.

He stated that the government and opposition should take a unified
position on the issue of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

Chairman of opposition Democratic Reforms Party, MP Asim Mollazade,
said that the facts of military crimes committed by Armenia
against Azerbaijan must be presented to the attention of the world
community. "Unfortunately, the world community is not completely aware
of these facts. Nagorno-Karabakh conflict should not be used by any
parties for their own purposes. This kind of national question should
not be used for public campaigns of political parties in the debate
with other parties," Mollazade said.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988
when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan
lost all of Nagorno-Karabakh except for Shusha and Khojali in December
1991. In 1992-93, Armenian armed forces occupied Shusha, Khojali and 7
districts surrounding Nagorno-Karabakh. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed
a ceasefire in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group – Russia,
France, and the U.S. – are currently holding the peace negotiations.

Turkish Man Assaulted For Missionary Activities: Report

TURKISH MAN ASSAULTED FOR MISSIONARY ACTIVITIES: REPORT

Agence France Presse
August 4, 2009 Tuesday 8:16 AM GMT

A 24-year-old street seller assaulted a man on grounds he was
proselytizing Christianity, holding a knife to his throat in downtown
Istanbul before surrendering to police, newspapers reported Tuesday.

The incident, the latest in a string of religiously-motivated attacks
in Turkey in recent years, happened Monday on a busy avenue in
Istanbul’s Kadikoy district, before the eyes of dozens of passers-by.

The assailant — identified as 24-year-old pirate CD vendor Yasin
Karasu — wrapped a Turkish flag around the head of Ismail Aydin,
35, put a knife to his throat and shouted "This is Turkey, you cannot
distribute Bibles here," the Haberturk newspaper said.

The stand-off lasted for 20 minutes before the police persuaded the
assailant to surrender, according to the Sabah daily.

Karasu later told the police he was angry with Aydin for converting
to Christianity and engaging in missionary activities, Sabah said,
while the Vatan daily suggested the assailant was mentally disturbed.

Proselytizing is generally viewed with suspicion in Turkey, whose
population is predominantly Muslim, with tiny Greek Othodox, Catholic,
Armenian and Jewish communities, concentrated in Istanbul.

An Italian Roman Catholic priest was shot dead in 2006 and three
Protestants — a German missionary and two Turkish converts — had
their throats slit in 2007.

Two Catholic priests have been stabbed and several churches have
reported harrassment and threats.

The incidents have fuelled fears of rising nationalism and hostility
against non-Muslims in Turkey, which is seeking to join the European
Union.
