UFC Fight Night 13 Preview: Karo "The Heat" Parisyan

My mother was Armenian and I have her maiden name tattooed across the
entire top of my back (Jierjian was her name for the record). I
support any and all Armenian fighters and when Karo tangles with the
ultra-talented Thiago Alves, I’ll be rooting for him more than ever.

This highlight reel shows the enormous talent of the Armenian
welterweight with particular attention paid to his victory over
current UFC welterweight champ Matt "The Terror" Serra. Serra proved
to be a worthy adversary, but Karo is extremely tough and proved it
by weathering a storm St. Pierre could not.

Karo Parisyan is a little gun shy in the wake of losing a title shot,
but let us not forget what he can offer when the opportunity presents
itself. Hopefully April 2nd is one of those days.

Dalai goof-up in nuclear deal haste

Dalai goof-up in nuclear deal haste
K.P. NAYAR

Washington, March 22: India allowed Nancy Pelosi, second in the line
of succession to the US presidency, to travel to Dharamsala and meet
the Dalai Lama in the misplaced expectation that the gesture would
wipe off some of the bad blood caused by the stymied nuclear deal
during foreign minister Pranab Mukherjee’s visit here from Sunday.

But the effort to bend over backwards to the point of risking India’s
historically calibrated Tibet policy has cut no ice with the Bush
administration.

White House spokesperson Gordon Johndroe told reporters who contacted
him during the long Good Friday weekend that the Bush administration
had no comment on Pelosi’s meeting with the Dalai Lama, instead of
praising the Indian gesture that South Block had hoped for.

State department officials who are garrulous in private about such
issues are stupefied that the Manmohan Singh government has allowed
the US to fire at China from India’s shoulders in total defiance of
their own expectations to clear Mukherjee’s pathway in Washington.

India’s questionable decision to allow the Speaker of the US House of
Representatives to criticise China on Indian soil in the company of
the Tibetan political leader whom Beijing views as a threat to its
territorial integrity is in sharp contrast to the White House’s own
policy of discretion.

Mukherjee, who will meet George W. Bush on Monday afternoon for 30
minutes, will find the US President paying no more than lip service
to the Tibetan cause.

Bush has refused to cancel his visit to Beijing for the Olympics,
saying: `I am going to the Olympics (because) I view the Olympics as
a sporting event’ and not as a political platform.

The President needs China to restrain North Korea’s nuclear programme
and because Beijing’s investments in US treasury bonds are vital in
the looming financial crisis here.

A senior South Block official, who seriously doubted the wisdom of
India’s new activism on Tibet, told The Telegraph that no one told
Mukherjee before Pelosi met him or in the run-up to his trip to
Washington that Bush has so far remained totally silent on the
Chinese crackdown in Tibet.

The official regretted that in the ill-considered haste to shore up
support in the US Congress for ratification of the 123 Agreement to
operationalise the nuclear deal, Mukherjee was also not briefed that
Pelosi was a maverick who has no qualms about putting US strategic
objectives at risk for electoral gains.

Five months ago, her unwavering pursuit of a congressional resolution
to hold Turkey accountable for a genocide of Armenians nearly a
century ago prompted Ankara to recall its ambassador to Washington
and threaten to cut off the use of its military bases that send
supplies to US troops in Iraq.

All because her home state of California is home to the largest
number of politically active Armenians who constitute a vote bank for
five Democratic members of the US House of Representatives from that
state.

While Bush is silent on Tibet, the three candidates in the fray to
succeed him next year have used the freedom of electioneering to
outdo one another in professing support for human rights for Tibetans
and exploiting the fears and suspicions among American voters about
China.

Even so, Republican John McCain has been restrained: he did not
discuss Tibet at all during his 45-minute meeting today with French
President Nicolas Sarkozy in Paris, but did not miss an opportunity
at a news conference later to roundly criticise China.

As such, by allowing Pelosi to travel to Dharamsala for a photo
opportunity with the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhists, India may
have unwittingly waded into US electoral waters.

Pelosi is certain to make the most of the photo opportunity she had
with the Dalai Lama both for her own re-election and in support of
the eventual Democratic nominee to be the next US President.

The Secret Still Not Revealed

THE SECRET STILL NOT REVEALED

Hayots Ashkhar Daily
March 21, 2008

The President is not going to reveal "The biggest secret of the
Republic of Armenia" during his last press conference in a wide
format. That is – "what is the President planning to do after quitting
his competencies?"

In response to this question Robert Kocharyan reconfirmed his answer
given during the meeting with the students. Which is – to rest for
some time, and later to decide what to do. " I have already said that
I’m not going to be the youngest pensioner. But I have never said
whether or not I’m gong to hold a position. With my character and
type I can’t sit in idleness. But before making up my mind I must
decide what I want from this life. This I have already said during
my meeting with the students."

Baku: Issue Of Next Meeting Of Presidents Of Azerbaijan And Armenia

ISSUE OF NEXT MEETING OF PRESIDENTS OF AZERBAIJAN AND ARMENIA REMAINS UNCLEAR: DEPUTY ASSISTANT SECRETARY OF STATE

TREND News Agency

Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Baku, 21 March /corr. Trend News K.Ramazanova / The
issue of the date and place of the next meeting of the Presidents of
Azerbaijan and Armenia remains unclear, said the U.S. Co-Chairman of
the OSCE Minsk Group, Matthew Bryza.

According to unofficial information, the meeting of the Presidents
of Azerbaijan and Armenia regarding peaceful settlement of the
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict may take place at the beginning of April
in Bucharest within the NATO summit. Yerevan and Baku highlighted
their preparedness to re-establish the negotiations process which was
suspended as a result of presidential elections in Armenia in February.

The U.S. Co-Chairman said that the President of Armenia, Robert
Kocharyan, who completes his presidential term will not participate in
the NATO Bucharest summit, and the newly elected President of Armenia,
Serj Sarkisyan, will come to the presidential oath no earlier than
9 April, Bryza said, adding that it remains unclear when the next
meeting of the leaders of the two countries will take place.

The U.S. politician considers that the fair and sustainable settlement
of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict remains as one of the key issues of
the US-Azerbaijan partnership. "The United States and Azerbaijan
are satisfied with the deep friendship and strong strategic
partnership. The high-ranking officials of Azerbaijan clearly
made aware Washington that they intend to, in every possible way,
strengthen and intensify our close relations in a wide diapason of
issues of mutual interest," said the Deputy Assistant Secretary of
State for European and Eurasian Affairs, Matthew Bryza.

The conflict between the two countries of the South Caucasus began
in 1988 due to Armenian territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Since
1992, Armenian Armed Forces have occupied 20% of Azerbaijan including
the Nagorno-Karabakh region and its seven surrounding districts. In
1994, Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement at which
time the active hostilities ended. The Co-Chairs of the OSCE Minsk
Group ( Russia, France, and the US) are currently holding peaceful
negotiations.

No Legal Force

NO LEGAL FORCE

Estimating the adoption of the resolution regarding Nagorno Karabakh,
submitted to the UN General Assembly by Azerbaijan V. Oskanyan said:
" I estimate negatively the resolution submitted by Azerbaijan
to the UN. It was unnecessary, untimely, both as a process and as
a result. But I’m satisfied with the number of the countries that
didn’t support it. I estimate positively their decision.

The decision has no legal force and it is of consultative nature and
I don’t think it will have any consequence on the settlement process,
if this step taken by Azerbaijan is not aimed at misleading Azerbaijan
and all the others."

CBA Calculates Composite Economic Indices Of First Quarter Of 2008

CBA CALCULATES COMPOSITE ECONOMIC INDICES OF FIRST QUARTER OF 2008

Noyan Tapan
March 18, 2008

YEREVAN, MARCH 18, NOYAN TAPAN. The Central Bank of Armenia (CBA)
has calculated the composite indices of the Armenian economy of
the first quarter of 2008. According to the CBA press service,
the business environment index of this period made 107.8% on the
previous quarter and 87.4% on the same quarter of last year. The
economic activity index made 120.6% and 99.1% respectively, while
the consumer confidence index made 110.3% and 99.1% respectively.

The CBA has calculated composite economic indices since early 2005. In
order to calculate the indices of the first quarter of 2008, the
CBA studied 845 organizations in industry, construction and service
sectors by a selective principle. 1,789 households in Yerevan and
all the marzes were surveyed as well. The surveys were conducted by
the Internet, phone, and letters.

The business environment index was calculated by averaging the
organizations’s estimates concerning risks and changes in the overall
economic situation, the economic activity index was calculated by
averaging the organizations’ expectations concerning output, demand
for products and services and their stocks. The consumer confidence
index was calculated by averaging the estimates concerning households’
incomes, domestic expenses, employment and the current economic
conditions.

The questions were of qualitative character: the answer choices were
"grew", "remained unchanged" and "declined". Based on these answers,
the share of each version in the total number of answers is calculated,
then the percentage of positive answers is added to half the percentage
of neutral answers and the balances of answers are obtained. The
values of these balances range from 0 to 100. The value over 50
shows a positive tendency of the observed phenomenon, that below 50 –
a negative tendency, while 50 means an unchanged situation.
