I urge NSS, police to implement spot-checks, disarm so-called bodyguards of oligarchs and top officials: Pashinyan

“Robert Kocharyan and Serzh Sargsyan, you decided to challenge people of Armenia, so see the challenge,” PM Nikol Pashinyan said at today’s Yerevan City Council campaign in Davitashen district, reflecting to today’s top theme.

“I want to say unequivocally and explicitly that this is conspiracy, crime against Armenia’s statehood. I also assigned NSS, the police to uncover authors of the conspiracy and subject them to the strictest responsibility. When I used to be editor-in-chief of “Armenian times” daily, I published news that based on information at our disposal people linked to some oligarchs and high-ranking officials have bought eavesdropping devices by money grasped from the people, and basically created special services within the state in parallel with special state services.

And I state with responsibility—all those “special services”, illegally armed groups in the form of skinheads and bodyguards will be uncovered and destroyed. All illegally armed groups will be disarmed and from here, I instruct the NSS, the police to implement spot-checks, lay the so-called bodyguards of oligarchs and top officials to the ground and unarm them all. Misters Artur Vantesyan and Valeri Osipyan, I’m going to listen to your reports on the work done,” Pashinyan said. “Time of thieves has passed in Armenia, let him be from the USA, Russia or Australia, we’ll find him, return every stolen penny. All those confusing our revolution of love and tolerance with weakness, will feel people’s powerful rebuff today,” he added.

In the proceedings of the Main Department of Investigation of Particularly Important Cases of the Armenian Investigative Committee, “as a result of large-scale investigative actions” undertaken in the criminal case under investigation, cases of particularly large amount of money wastage were revealed in the “Martik” Foundation. charges were brought against the chairman of the board of trustees of the fund, Artur Aghabekyan.

The criminal case regarding the apparent abuses in the “Martik” Foundation was initiated based on the application of Anahit Bakhshyan, a member of the “Yelk” faction of the Yerevan Council of Elders, in July 2018. An investigative plan has been developed and necessary investigative actions have been taken to ensure a comprehensive, objective and complete investigation,” the statement of the Central Committee informs and continues.

“According to the obtained factual data, the funds of the fund were spent in separate cases contrary to the goals and objectives defined by the charter. In particular, particularly large sums of money were directed to organize hospitality in restaurants and hotels for various individuals, to purchase premium gasoline for vehicles unrelated to the foundation, and to provide expensive gifts to various individuals.

The apparent abuses were recorded in 2012-2016. during which, as a result, funds belonging to the fund were embezzled, with a preliminary estimate of AMD 54,083,860 million. In the criminal case, it was found that Artur Aghabekyan was the chairman of the fund’s board of trustees during the mentioned period, who had the right to directly manage the activities of the fund’s staff and actually managed the fund’s property alone. Sufficient information was obtained to the effect that a part of the funds of the fund was spent for the organization of entertainment in the restaurant of the rest zone, 40 percent of whose shares belonged to Artur Aghabekyan.

Based on the evidence obtained in the pre-trial proceedings, on August 29 Artur Aghabekyan was charged under Article 179, Part 3, Clause 1 of the RA Criminal Code. A signature not to leave was chosen as a preventive measure against him.”

It should be noted that Artur Aghbekyan held the post of Deputy Prime Minister of Nagorno Karabakh for a long time. Has the rank of lieutenant general of the RA Armed Forces.

Asbarez: Haytoug Marks 85th Anniversary of AYF

The cover of the upcoming edition of Haytoug

Editor’s Note: Haytoug, the official publication of the Armenian Youth Federation Western United States, has been the voice of its members and the Armenian Cause for decades and continues to be a critical part of the Armenian-American youth, whose aspirations, motivation and drive to advance the Armenian Cause have set the tone and the agenda for our community for generations.

Below is a message from this publication’s editors.

Reflecting on oneself is central to growth. The Armenian Youth Federation celebrated its 85th year of serving the Armenian youth and its community this year, and reflecting on this milestone is the responsibility of every member.

The past 85 years have been a whirlwind of new and evolving ambitions, challenges, and victories for the AYF. A central tenet of our organization continues to be looking honestly and objectively at ourselves and fostering our continued growth. We acknowledge this and prosper.

We are confident this issue of Haytoug Magazine will allow for that reflection for our members, our alumni, as well as the community at large–all who are integral parts of the organization.

As a youth organization with a presence in all corners of the world, our members believe that it is it in their hands, alongside driven entities in the country and abroad, to be the architects of the nation. During the month-long demonstrations in Armenia–popularly known as the Velvet Revolution, toppling Serzh Sarkisian’s regime–the youth proved yet again that they have an integral role in advancing change in Armenia and demonstrated the Armenian people’s verve and courage to question the status quo.

We have found a renewed assurance of Armenian identity, culture, and the importance of participating in nation building.

Armenians today are looking forward to the future more than ever.

The AYF is cognizant that the struggle of achieving a strong nation is not one dimensional. Its members engage in all manners of initiatives: motivate and connect with Armenians of diverse backgrounds; pursue advocacy at all levels of government; organize the masses to fight injustices; raise funds to aid families of fallen soldiers; stay present as a cultural and educational tool for Armenian youth around the globe; and the list continues.

Karekin Njdeh’s mission was to instill the Armenian identity and spirit within Diasporan youth who are not in the homeland. Decades later, his mission still stands with a new generation raised on the conviction that power is within the people, and with the duty to cultivate this new awakening.

Israeli Drone Maker Targeted Armenian Soldiers During Demo For Azeri Customers

Aeronautics Drone

Employees of an Israeli drone manufacturer, Aeronautics are facing charges for allegedly demonstrating its weapons targeting skills on Armenian soldiers at the request of potential Azerbaijan customers, various Israeli media outlets said.

“Aeronautics and 10 of its employees were informed that they were set to be charged, pending a hearing,” the justice ministry said in a statement released to the Israeli media. Aeronautics chief executive Amos Mathan and other senior employees were suspected of “fraudulently obtaining something under aggravated circumstances” as well as violations of Israel’s security export control law, the ministry said.

“The employees were investigated about a deal the company made with a substantive overseas client,” the statement read without providing further details, noting a gag order over the affair.

According to media reports, in 2017 representatives of Aeronautics were working on a deal in Azerbaijan, where they were asked by their hosts to demonstrate their Orbiter 1K attack drone’s weapons on Armenian soldiers.

Two Aeronautics employees refused the request before a more senior official in the firm acquiesced, lightly wounding two Armenian soldiers, the media reports said.

Azerbaijan and Armenia are in dispute over the Nagorny Karabakh region, with frequent exchanges of fire along their volatile front line. Karabakh has been under Armenian control since it was seized in the early 1990s after the break-up of the Soviet Union. Azerbaijan has repeatedly threatened to take it back by force.

Speaker Babloyan and Arman Tatoyan meet

Speaker of the Parliament of Armenia Ara Babloyan on August 29 had a meeting with Ombudsman Arman Tatoyan.

During the meeting Speaker Babloyan told the Ombudsman that during his recent meetings with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and President Armen Sarkissian the sides attached importance to the imperative of the role of the Constitution and stated that all actions aimed at solving the issues should be made in accordance with democratic standards, in an atmosphere of dialogue, negotiations and discussion.

In his turn Ombudsman Arman Tatoyan introduced his positions on the issues raised by the Speaker:

  • Any process in the country should be based on the rule of law. Any initiative should be based on the human rights.
  • The freedom of speech is one of main indicators for the country’s democratic development: the protection of this high value is the duty of all of us. The promotion of pluralism is directly linked with this as Armenia really needs this now.
  • As for the possible formation of transitional justice bodies, the Human Rights Defender plans to completely study the international experience and standards. It will be summed up by taking into account the concrete proposals of the government. One thing is clear: the activity of any new body should be in line with Armenia’s international commitments and based on the Constitution and laws.
  • Coming to courts, it should be noted that the state power is being carried out based on the separation and balance of legislative, executive and judicial powers. This in its turn supposes independence of judiciary from both the legislative and executive, and from any other body or individual. The issues in the judicial system should be solved by consistent, also tough, but exclusively legal means.
  • It is necessary to ensure constant development of the system of protection of rights ruling out regressive achievements. The Ombudsman will continue making maximum efforts on this direction, as well as will support the government’s initiatives directed for that purpose.
  • Any issues should be discussed and solved in the conditions of solidarity and dialogue.

Gianpiero Ruggeri: I do not feel myself as a stranger because Italians and Armenians are very similar in nature

At Aram Khachaturian Concert Hall, the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra will perform Giacomo Puccini’s “Il Tabarro” (The Cloak) and Ruggero Leoncavallo’s “Pagliacci.”

“We present about 2-3 operas annually, and most important is the right choice of singers,” says director Eduard Topchyan.

Arsen Soghomonyan, who lives in Moscow, will perform the role of the Canio in “Pagliacci” opera, who, by the way, started his carrer with the Philharmonic. At that time, he was a baritone, and after only a year and a half, the singer acts as a tenor. Baritoneal tenor is a rare phenomenon and this is a great success, says the conductor.

Soprano Anna Kasyan, who will perform Nedda’s role, was a real revelation for Topchyan. He applied to Anna by Serzh Smbatyan’s advice, he heard her and admired.

The singer was born in Tbilisi and lives in France, and she is in Armenia for the first time. Her playlist includes more than twenty roles, from Mozart to Verdi and she has no lack of invitations from the world’s best theaters. She agreed with great pleasure to take part in the performance, and even canceled the concert in London.

Unlike Anna, Italian Baritone Gianpiero Ruggeri is in Armenia for the third time. “I’m not a Armenian,” he says, “but I do not feel myself as a stranger because Italians and Armenians are very similar in nature. Cooperation with this orchestra is a great pleasure. There is a professional approach to music here, which you cannot even find in many European theaters.”

Azerbaijani press: Merkel: Germany ready to contribute to settle Karabakh conflict

24 August 2018 19:50 (UTC+04:00)

Baku, Azerbaijan, Aug. 24

Trend:

Germany is ready to contribute to creation of a favorable atmosphere for settlement of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said at a joint press conference with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, the Armenian media reported Aug. 24.

Merkel stressed that Germany is a member of the OSCE Minsk Group.

“We said it would be good to resolve the conflict,” the chancellor said. “But it is important to resolve it in a good atmosphere. Germany is ready to contribute to that.”

“The conflict cannot be resolved without negotiations, and every effort should be made to resolve the conflict,” she added.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
