ERDOGAN WANTS PROOF FOR GENOCIDE

Yerevan (Yerkir) – Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan repeated
a call for Armenia to open its archives to historians to prove claims
that Ottoman Turks committed genocide against Armenians in 1915,
the Bloomberg agency reported.

"The so-called genocide is completely a lie," he said. "I invite
people to prove it happened."

The World War I killings are recognized as genocide by more than
three-quarters of U.S. states, as well as the parliaments of more
than 20 countries, including France, Greece and the Netherlands.

Obama urged Erdogan during their White House meeting this week to
take measures that Turkey has agreed on with Armenia to help normalize
the countries’ relations.

Erdogan said parliament won’t approve the agreements unless there’s
progress toward resolving Nagorno Karabakh.

Manoyan Says Armenia Should Withdraw From Talks With Turkey

MANOYAN SAYS ARMENIA SHOULD WITHDRAW FROM TALKS WITH TURKEY

Yerevan (Yerkir) – Kiro Manoyan, the director of the ARF Bureau’s
Hay Dat and Political Affairs Office, has said that the Erdogan-Obama
meeting was actually in Turkey’s interest.

Manoyan told a news conference on December 10 that Turkey’s attempts
to condition the Armenian-Turkish relations on the Artsakh settlement
is an excuse for Armenia to withdraw from the talks, accusing the
Turkish leadership of changing the rules of the game and derailing
the talks. The sooner Armenia leaves the talks, the less losses it
would suffer, Manoyan said.

Speaking of the "mystery of the reasonable timeline" for the Turkish
parliament to ratify the protocols, Manoyan said that it looks like
the Turkish parliament would do it next February or March. Turkey
is likely to find a diplomatic game by next April to prevent Obama
from using the word genocide, Manoyan added. He also said that it
is now obvious that establishing relations with Armenia is no more
a priority for Turkey, and that it now is trying harder to get its
nose into the Karabakh talks.

"The fact that the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs are trying to get ahead
of the Karabakh settlement logics indicates there is pressure. And
as long as Azerbaijan fails to realize that Karabakh’s status can’t
be one under Azerbaijan, there will be no progress," Manoyan said.

Manoyan added that Karabakh’s participation in the settlement talks
is crucial, but unless Armenian changes is approach it is not going
to happen. What is necessary is that Armenia demands that Karabakh
be a party to the negotiations, Manoyan said, otherwise, Karabakh
will always be seen as a barrier.

Turkey should not give way to the influence of persons and groups
in the issue of connection of the Armenian-Turkish rapprochement
and the solution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, and should act
on the basis of statements by the Prime Minister, said Yasar Yakis,
a member of the Turkish Parliament and former Foreign Minister.

Statements by the Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the United
States that the Armenian-Turkish protocols will not be ratified
without progress in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict are already the
clear position of Turkey, and any statements from the outside are
empty, Yakis told Trend News special correspondent in Mardin.

Former Turkish Foreign Minister takes part in the second
Turkish-European forum, held in the Turkish city of Mardin.

"We are negotiating with the European Union and EU structures,"
Yakis said, adding that statements by separate persons of EU do not
reflect the position of the Union.

"We must adhere to only the statements [of Erdogan] that without
solving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, promotion can not be in this
matter [the Armenian-Turkish normalization]," said Yakis.

Turkish and Armenian foreign ministers Ahmet Davutoglu and Edward
Nalbandian signed the Ankara-Yerevan protocols in Zurich Oct. 10.

Diplomatic relations between Armenia and Turkey have been broken due
to Armenia’s claims of an alleged genocide, and its occupation of
Azerbaijani lands. The border between them has been broken since 1993.

become a transit point for Armenia for flights to Europe and
Scandinavian countries, said Latvian President Valdis Zatlers at
today’s Armenian-Latvian business forum.

During his address, the Latvian president emphasized the importance of
working with foreign partners. "There’s wonderful potential in Armenia,
from which can stem new ideas for strengthening mutual relations,"
said Zatlers.

According to Zatlers, the signed agreements between Armenia and Latvia
can become a new stimulus for the development of bilateral relations.

Referring to their interests in Armenia, the Latvian president pointed
out woodworking, energy, finances and tourism, in particular.

According to him, the activities of Latvian pharmaceutical and
foodstuffs companies are particularly effective in Armenia.

Furthermore, Latvia also has an interest in construction. "Latvia’s
construction companies are searching for new partners," noted Zatlers,

EURONEWS TO SHOOT REPORT ABOUT AZERIS TO MAINTAIN PARITY

/PanARMENIAN.Net/
10.12.2009 21:26 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Euronews is always interested to cover the major
events of our times and Nagorno Karabakh is today one of the biggest
developing stories, Editor-in-Chief of Euronews channel told a
PanARMENIAN.Net reporter.

"We are not focusing on the historical aspects of this issue, that is
for the historians to study. For us, the issue in the story of Nagorno
Karabakh is the people who suffered on both sides. We have recently
done a report on the Armenians who suffered during the conflict, and
it is now our obvious intent to focus on the other side as well, that
is the Azeris whose lives were also uprooted during all these years
of confrontation between Armenia and Azerbaijan. This idea has nothing
to do with a number of protests we have received from individuals and
organizations from Azerbaijan following the broadcast of our report
on the Armenian side in Nagorno Karabakh. Both our reports are based
solely on our editorial values and guidelines," he said.

L.A. council candidate Paul Krekorian assails 2 mailers

L.A. council candidate Paul Krekorian assails 2 mailers by Christine Essel
Her hit pieces accusing him of sexism and anti-Semitism are called
‘disgusting and grotesque.’

By Maeve Reston

Prominent supporters of Los Angeles City Council candidate and
Assemblyman Paul Krekorian denounced two mailers sent last week by the
campaign of his opponent, former Paramount Pictures Corp. executive
Christine Essel, that accuse Krekorian of sexism and anti-Semitism,
based in part on comments on a blog.

Tuesday’s runoff race for former City Councilwoman Wendy Greuel’s seat
in the San Fernando Valley has grown increasingly caustic in the final
weeks, but Krekorian condemned one of Essel’s new mailers as "the most
disgusting and grotesque political communication" he had ever seen.

In the first mailing, Essel’s campaign said a previous Krekorian
campaign mail piece had portrayed her "hog-tied with arms and hands
held back by heavy rope." Krekorian’s spokesman said the mailer, which
depicted a smiling Essel with ropes lifting an ankle and her wrists as
she stood on a DWP bill, was intended to portray the candidate as a
puppet controlled by the union that represents Department of Water and
Power employees. That union has independently spent more than $244,000
to boost her campaign bid.

Essel’s campaign consultant, John Shallman, said Krekorian should
apologize for the portrayal.

The mail from Essel’s campaign also charged that Krekorian and his
supporters "have unleashed a shocking barrage of nasty, sexist and
anti-Semitic personal attacks" on a website. Shallman provided a list
of comments that the campaign had collected from readers of Mayor
Sam’s Sister City blog as examples.

Krekorian’s campaign stressed that it has no relationship to the
independent blog, created in 2004 by Valley resident Michael Higby. In
a telephone interview, Higby said he supports Krekorian but has no
official role in the campaign. He and two other writers on the blog
have authority to approve reader comments, he said.

A second Essel mailer late last week showed an image of City Hall
wrapped in barbed wire and accused Krekorian of "intolerance." The
piece criticized "anti-Semitic hate speech" on the website of Asbarez,
an Armenian newspaper, that Essel’s campaign said was owned or
controlled by Krekorian supporters. The source listed was a report in
Asbarez about an Essel event at the home of a Turkish American. The
Essel campaign said the reference to "hate speech" stemmed from reader
comments posted below the article that now appear to have been
removed.

Krekorian’s spokesman said the campaign has advertised in the
newspaper but has no other connection to it.

Shallman said Krekorian and his supporters have misrepresented Essel’s
position on the Armenian genocide, which claimed the lives of more
than a million Armenians under the Ottoman Empire (now Turkey)
starting in 1915. The Turkish government disputes that a genocide
occurred.

Because of the misrepresentations, Shallman said, Essel put out a
statement in the Armenian press underscoring her condemnation of
anyone who denies the genocide. He added that Krekorian should have
publicly condemned the comments on both websites.

"Paul Krekorian’s silence on the sexist remarks and anti-Semitic
remarks has been deafening," Shallman said.

Rep. Brad Sherman, who recorded an automated phone call criticizing
the Essel mailers, said it was "utterly absurd" for Krekorian to be
blamed for comments by "some lunatic" on a website. He said he
believed the mailers would backfire: "It undermines our efforts to
fight hate speech and anti-Semitism."

Euronews broadcasting might be banned in Azerbaijan

Euronews broadcasting might be banned in Azerbaijan

18:08 / 12/05/2009Azerbaijan National Television and Radio Council
(NTRC) might ban the broadcasting of international cable TV channels,
that are of anti-Azerbaijani nature, NTRC Chairman Nushiravan
Maharramli told Trend News.

`If any foreign television channel continues broadcasting such biased
programs, we will demand their cessation,’ he said, speaking of
`Nagorno-Karabakh ` wind of change’ program by Euronews.

`Maharramli recalled that the legislation on televisions broadcasting
specifies the cases when broadcasting of foreign television channels
may be interrupted in the country,’ Trend says.

The mentioned program provoked negative reaction in Azerbaijan up to a
note of protest by Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry. In his report the
journalist says: `Nagorno-Karabakh declared independence in 1991 after
collapse of Soviet Union. It resulted in war between Armenia and
Azerbaijan.’

The journalist also points out that for many Karabakhi Armenians
`religious faith remained deeply important part of their lives’. There
are hundreds of traditional Armenian churches and monasteries in NKR.

Under NTRC decree, the broadcasting of BBC, Azadlig (Liberty) and
Voice of America was suspended in accordance with law `On TV
broadcasting’. Euronews seems to be the next.
