Leader of the Communist Party of Russia Gennady Zyuganov congratulated
the Armenian nation on the occasion of the anniversary of the victory
in the Great Patriotic War.

“I feel great respect for your marvelous republic, which has always
been able to work with dignity, fight courageously and feels great
love and respect for Russia,” he said.

It’s very important to understand at this difficult moment that without
close cooperation between our brotherly peoples, it is hard to overcome
the crisis, which our countries and states have found themselves in,
Mr. Zyuganov said.

“Our faction has always supported and assisted the partners in
Armenia. We hope the Communist Party representatives will always
be able to defend the workers’ interests, and, first and foremost,
in the parliament, by passing laws for the benefit of each person,”
the leader of the Communist Party of Russia stated.

Expert: RPA, Communist Party, United Armenians Don’t Support Sects

Expert: RPA, Communist party, United Armenians don’t support sects

PanARMENIAN.Net
May 4, 2012 – 12:27 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – Head of the Center for Aid and Rehabilitation to the
Victims of Destructive Cults Alexander Amaryan met with journalists
on May 4.

Sectarian organizations will actively participate in National Assembly
elections due on May 6, he said.

“Armenia has approximately 200-230000 sect members accounting for
10% of the total voters, and these votes may help a party enter the
parliament,” Amaryan told the press conference.

According to the expert, only Republican Party of Armenia (RPA),
Communist Party and United Armenians party do not cooperate with
sects. As to remaining five forces running for elections, it appears
to be possible, he said.

There are 64 registered and 200 unregistered sectarian organizations
in Armenia, Amaryan stated saying religious organizations are well
financed, with most part of the funding coming from abroad.

Unfortunately, Armenian legislation specifies no control over the
sects; no sanctions are imposed on them either, he added.

declaration about the parliamentary elections in Armenia on May 6. In
the declaration which was inclined to Armenpress from AEC is mentioned
that the council with European Union and international society is
looking forward to the elections. “In most cases Armenian government
as well as opposition, Medias and civil society will have to secure
these elections to become a step directed to promising future of the

Europe is standing next to Armenia and welcomes the significant
progress of last years. There was held dialogue with opposition,
amnesty was implemented, the election Code was reformed, a regular
dialogue with Europe on Human rights was started, several laws and
procedures were reformed concerning behavior of policemen and judges.

Besides, negotiations with EU about the new Association agreement are
going very fast. More and more parties cooperate with their European

you” is said in the declaration.

Hrant Markaryan Says To Commissions’ Members: "The Party Is Responsi

HRANT MARKARYAN SAYS TO COMMISSIONS’ MEMBERS: “THE PARTY IS RESPONSIBLE FOR EACH HAIR OF ALL OF YOU…”

20:21 . 03/05

The meeting of ARF-D representatives with the members of the
party’s commission in the district election bodies, the authorized
representatives and the representatives of the party’s headquarters
before all-national elections has already become a tradition. Today,
ARF-D Bureau representative Hrant Markaryan and ARF-D Armenia Supreme
Body representative Armen Rustamyan met them, urged them to be active
and vigilant both for obliging fair elections and for fixing all
the facts.

“This is the team, which both knows the code by heart and is familiar
with the whole election process and can fight against each election
fraud,” Armen Rustamyan told the members of the district election
commissions urging to be strong not to allow the achievements reached
during the campaign disappear during the elections.

Armen Rustamyan urged to be active also in the issue of not allowing
election violations against or by the other parties: “Here is the team,
which will contribute to defending people’s votes. You are our hope”.

The speaker also urges each voter to attach importance to his/her
vote and to spend 20 minutes on the election. And they will do their
best to retain their votes.

Attaching importance to the necessity of changes through the elections,
ARF-D Bureau representative Hrant Markaryan stated in his turn that
when each time the citizens’ voice doesn’t reach its destination,
they get disappointed and leave the country.

The ARF-D Bureau representative criticized the difficult social
situation in the country and accused the authorities in all that:
“We must change this authority. There is no other way…”

It is necessary to form an authority, which will not give the opponent
an opportunity of becoming active and will not give a right to the
international structures to condemn us.

“The country must develop, justice must be established, and it
is necessary that we develop without ceding…” Hrant Markaryan
underscored.

He urged the commission members not to allow misrepresentation of
votes, advised to be attentive, not to get tired and not to be afraid
of anyone.

“The party is responsible for each hair of all of you…,” the ARF-D
Bureau representative said.

It is necessary to carry out the work flawlessly, to fix all the facts,
in order that fair elections take place, and in order to have a basis
for appealing against the results if no fair elections take place.

Kocharian Again Attacks Government, Hints At Comeback

KOCHARIAN AGAIN ATTACKS GOVERNMENT, HINTS AT COMEBACK
Emil Danielyan

03.05.2012

Amenia — President Serzh Sarkisian (R) and his predecessor Robert
Kocharian attend an official ceremony.

With only three days to go before Armenia’s crucial parliamentary
elections, former President Robert Kocharian on Thursday again did not
rule his return to the political arena and criticized his successor
Serzh Sarkisian’s economic track record.

In his latest interview with the Mediamax news agency, Kocharian also
downplayed his reputed ties with the Prosperous Armenia Party (BHK)
of businessman Gagik Tsarukian, while predicting that it will make
a strong showing in Sunday’s vote.

“My relationship with the government is not unequivocal,” he said.

“I sincerely want it to succeed but am unhappy with the results of
its activities, especially the economic ones. Incidentally, I have
directly said this to the president as well.”

Kocharian went on to accuse the Sarkisian government of misleading
Armenians about the economic situation in the country which he said
has deteriorated since he completed his ten-year rule in 2008.

“People don’t get it when [the authorities] are trying to convince them
in that their life has improved. Ultimately, that leads to cynicism
and widespread public distrust,” he said, pointing to increased labor
migration from Armenia.

Asked about the possibility of his political comeback, he said,
“In Armenia, there are now great public expectations of change, and
that means the extent of public indifference is not irreversible,
which is a highly positive fact. The question that interests me is:
to what extent do the people associate those changes with my return
to active politics? I have no complete answer yet.”

Kocharian gave similar indications of his desire to regain a key role
in the country’s political life in his previous Mediamax interview
published last September. Just days after that interview Tsarukian
pointedly declined to reaffirm support for Sarkisian’s candidacy in
the next presidential election due in 2013.

Relations between the BHK and Sarkisian’s Republican Party of Armenia
(HHK) seem to have worsened since then. Tsarukian’s party, which
is part of the HHK-led ruling coalition, now makes no secret of its
intention to at least win a greater presence in government as a result
of the parliamentary elections.

The BHK has for year been linked with Kocharian owing to its wealthy
leader’s long-running and close rapport with the ex-president.

Hence, persistent media speculation that it would serve as the main
platform for a possible Kocharian comeback. The speculation only
intensified when former Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian, a key member
of the Kocharian administration, joined the BHK in March.

Kocharian insisted, however, that the BHK is only “one of the parties”
with which he cooperated during his 1998-2008 presidency.

“Had it been mine, the majority of ministers and regional governors
would have probably ended up [in the BHK,] rather than the HHK,
in the run-up to the 2007 parliamentary elections,” he argued.

“But on the whole, I am glad that the BHK is succeeding and registering
a substantial rise in its popularity,” he stressed. “I think that it
will have a serious influence on the size of the party’s representation
in the next National Assembly,” he said.

A much stronger BHK presence in the parliament would have to come at
the HHK’s expense. The presidential party has made clear, however,
it is aiming to again win the absolute majority of parliament seats.

Observers believe that a landslide victory in Sunday’s polls is
critical for the success of Sarkisian’s reelection plans.

Kocharian denied on Thursday any involvement in the Armenian
parliamentary race. “Generally speaking, I think it’s not a president’s
job, neither a former nor a current one’s,” he said in an apparent
dig at not only Sarkisian but Levon Ter-Petrosian, another former
president leading the main opposition Armenian National Congress (HAK).

Kocharian also seemed to scathingly allude to both men’s well-known
passion for chess when he rejected parallels drawn between Armenian
politics and the ancient game. “The game of chess is all about
protecting the king’s ‘head’ at any cost,” he told Mediamax.

“For the sake of that aim, you can even sacrifice half of the
‘kingdom.'”

“So we had better leave chess alone. Let it remain a mere intellectual
game,” concluded the ex-president.

Students Attend Clinton Global Initiative, Bring Armenian Issues To

STUDENTS ATTEND CLINTON GLOBAL INITIATIVE, BRING ARMENIAN ISSUES TO LIGHT
By Anita Tokatyan

April 25, 2012

As the 21-year-old Armenian student looked into the eyes of former
President Bill Clinton, she took a moment to comprehend whether this
was a dream or reality. “How could I, only a college student and a
recent immigrant, meet the president?” she said. “How could I be here
today and shake hands with one of the most powerful men in the world?”

Suddenly the reality of it all hit her and she realized her calling,
her reason, and her purpose for this meeting. Without further thought
she reached out to shake Clinton’s hand and realized she only had a
minute to say all she could about what mattered most to her and her
people. “Mr. President. I can’t thank you enough for the opportunity
to participate in this conference. As a recent immigrant to the United
States, I am literally living the American dream. Thank you for what
you’ve done for the Armenians. But my real dream is for the Armenian
Genocide to be recognized one day by the American government.”

“Thank you for what you’ve done for the Armenians. But my real dream
is for the Armenian Genocide to be recognized one day by the American
government.”

Nanor Balabanian and her team-Astkhik Hakobyan, Alexandra Basmadjian,
and Lilliana Karadavoukian-were one of the few Armenian students
invited to participate in Clinton’s 5th Annual Clinton Global
Initiative University (CGI U), held from March 30 to April 1 in
Washington, D.C.

The conference hosted over 1,000 college students from around the world
as a means of empowering, connecting, and inspiring their engagement
in public service. As the founder of the Hidden Road Initiative (HRI),
which aims to connect roads and bridge issues between the children of
Akhpradzor Armenia and the rest of the world, Balabanian, along with
her three motivated and dedicated peers, represented their development
project in Armenia.

“In this big group of 1,000 students and hundreds of different
organizations, I could not be more honored to see our Armenian flag
shine brightly among the big pool of student exhibits. I could not
be more honored of being Armenian and being present,” Balabanian said.

“This was not a trip to remember and grieve about the tragedies of the
past. This was a trip for us to move forward and build upon the past.

This was a trip where we would show President Clinton that Armenians
are alive and thriving.”

Through various panelists and speakers, the students learned about how
to be better leaders in their community. Panelists included Secretary
of State Madeleine Albright, world-renowned pop star Usher, the founder
of the online networking sensation Twitter, and the founder of Zipcar,
as well as many other non-profit and business leaders. The weekend
was full of speeches, seminars, and panel discussions.

Astkhik Hakobyan, the HRI director of international operations, was
moved by the inspiring and engaging lectures presented at CGI U and
felt they were all directed toward HRI. The experience opened her
eyes to the different opportunities and endeavors available to her
as an individual and as a founding member of HRI.

“A wonderful anthropology professor once told me, ‘Culture is the
lens through which we see the world,'” Hakobyan said. “Indeed,
this short weekend has polished and refined the lens through which
I gather information.”

According to Hakobyan, the most dominant lesson, however, was the
importance of learning how to listen to others.

“All of this [our projects] can be done by first listening, absorbing,
analyzing, and constructively critiquing,” Hakobyan said, “then by
using the resources at our disposal to administer new ideas and plans
for action.”

Lilliana Karadavoukian, the HRI fundraising manager, said she felt her
commitment to HRI was strengthened through her participation in CGI U.

The environment of growth and innovation struck her personally and
sparked her ideas concerning HRI’s future.

“Networking with a thousand other student leaders…inspired us to
work even harder,” Karadavoukian said. “A surrounding of such ambitious
individuals was so infectious…it makes me want to network, innovate,
and plan for more projects.”

Although the students felt they gained valuable information from
CGI U, Karadavoukian was disappointed that Armenia was not covered
in the “Preventing Human Genocides and Mass Atrocities” workshop. As
an Armenian, Karadavoukian felt that history of genocides should be
better recognized.

“They mentioned one word of the Holocaust, went over very briefly
the genocide in Bosnia,” Karadavoukian said. “And no word over the
Armenian Genocide, which was the core root of all the other genocides
that occurred throughout history.”

Nevertheless, the students worked together to develop a comprehensive
“commitment to action.” This commitment requires them to build upon
their development project in the rural village of Akhpradzor, Armenia.

Last year, Balabanian led a team of UCSB, Yerevan State University,
and Stanford students to build a computer lab, bring internet
connectivity, and run an educational camp that included classes in
computer, health, English, sports, and arts. The reason behind this
project was to provide avenues of communication and commerce for
villagers who are isolated for six months every winter due to snow.

The long-term goals of their project are for the internet to be used
to create new jobs in the village, provide access to tele-medicine,
and give new resources for education. Meanwhile in the U.S., the
team holds various fundraisers to provide basic needs, such as winter
coats and sturdy shoes, for the village children.

“What makes our team thrive is the dedicated individuals who take
part in the Hidden Road Initiative. Our 20 members at UCSB come
from a variety of majors, bringing with them skills that move the
organization forward,” Balabanian said. “Leading HRI has led me to
believe that Armenian college students have the ability to make a
tremendous impact.”

This idea was reinforced in the students when they had the opportunity
to meet the ABC foreign correspondent in Dubai, Lara Setrakian, who
also was a speaker at CGI U. Upon meeting Setrakian the students were
motivated by her experiences and wise words. “During our meeting, Lara
covered three main unforgettable points,” Karadavoukian said. “First,
the importance of our contribution to society as individuals; second,
the importance of our identity as an Armenian and our role in the
diaspora; third, the importance of being an Armenian woman in today’s
society and our role in public service.”

Setrakian’s effect on the students changed their perception of the
abilities and opportunities to evoke change in Armenia and the world.

The HRI director of development, Alexandra Basmadjian, felt uplifted
by the experience of meeting someone who redefined the notion of
overcoming limitations in life, and pursuing not only the impossible
but also the unimaginable.

“Her genuineness was beaming as she overflowed with words of wisdom and
advice,” Basmadjian said. “She has become my new source of strength,
motivation, and passion.”

The presence of encouraging leaders and students raised the bar on
the capabilities of these students to engage in public service on
both large and small scales. To emerge successful in their attempts
for positive change and to redefine the meaning of possibility, the
participants were asked the big question: What would you attempt to
do if you knew you could not fail?

The inviting atmosphere of experience and leadership provided
the students a new outlook toward their personal and global goals:
abandoning limitations and pressures, and driving forward with their
imaginations.

“In a group of 1,000 motivated and dedicated students from around
the world, we not only found a new Armenia, but we started building
one as well,” Balabanian said.

Teachers Of Yerevan State Linguistic University Send Open Letter To

TEACHERS OF YEREVAN STATE LINGUISTIC UNIVERSITY SEND OPEN LETTER TO PRESIDENT

arminfo
Thursday, May 3, 16:44

Teachers and students of the Yerevan State Linguistic University
after V. Bryusov have sent an open letter to President Serzh Sargsyan.

“The teaching staff of the YSLU is deeply concerned over the atmosphere
inside the university. The insulting statements and disrespectful
attitude by Suren Zolyan and his supporter-‘free teachers’ are
inadmissible. Zolyan’s services as a public worker and scientists
are undisputable but his authoritarian style of management inside
the university and negligence towards the teaching staff is deepening
year by year. Zolyan calls a show introduction of the acting rector
but it is Zolyan who makes a show every day sending a small group
of students (40-60 people out of 4,000 students) to the street to
protect his interests,” the letter reads. A total of 178 teachers
and students signed the letter.

To recall, on April 17 Armenian Minister of Education and Science
Armen Ashotyan signed a decree on dismissal of Souren Zolyan from
the post of the Rector of the Yerevan State Linguistic University and
on termination of the labor contract signed with Zolyan on 17 March
2008. The press service of the Ministry reported that the dismissal
was preceded by two disciplinary sanctions imposed on Zolyan on April
6 and April 17. The first severe reprimand was for the fact that
Zolyan ignored Armen Ashotyan’s instruction not to leave Armenia over
the period from 19 to 23 March and devolved his responsibility upon
another person. The second reprimand was the response to the numerous
violations revealed at the Yerevan State Linguistic University during
the inspection carried out by the Ministry on March 20-27.
