Sayat Nova’s Journey Through Time

by Victor Swoboda

With its latest show, the Boston-based Armenian folk-dance ensemble,
Sayat Nova, might well surprise those who think of folk dancing as
grinning villagers prancing in lederhosen. The first half of the show
called Journey Through Time depicts Armenia’s 4,000-year history of
early paganism, defiant Christian faith, bloody battles and
indomitable survival. One tableau showing a massacre of Armenians by
Turks comes with a parental advisory notice.

Company founder and chief choreographer Apo Ashjian has heavily
stylized the violence, of course, to make it palatable on stage. But
his decision to tackle the harshest moments of Armenia’s history shows
how seriously he takes the company’s aim of “preserving and promoting
Armenian culture.” Spectators will get some inkling of Armenia’s role
as a cradle of Western civilization.

“Ashjian starts with a strong dance showing pagan Armenian symbols,
then through important points of Armenian history, accepting
Christianity, the battle of Vartanantz against the Persian empire,
then to (the massacres of) 1915,” said Raffi Migdesyan, a Montrealer
who in 1986 regularly travelled to Boston with three other local
dancers to rehearse and dance with the newly formed Sayat Nova.

One number uses a love song by the 18th century troubadour, Sayat
Nova, after whom the company was named, who wrote about his forbidden
love for a princess and his consequent banishment.

The show’s second half is a medley of vigorous and lyrical Armenian
folk dances along the lines of the entertaining show that Sayat Nova
performed in Montreal in 2004. These include the highland Kochari, and
the Yarkhoushda, a militant dance with clapping and stomping.

“Sayat Nova was a community dance group when we started,” recalled
Migdesyan. “Now it’s much larger, younger and more professional. When
I first came, three dancers were pregnant. Now their kids are dancing
in the group!”

The troupe’s dancers were trained at Ashjian’s own school, Abaka,
where more than 100 students age 3 to 16 are enrolled. Ashjian’s three
grown children will be among those performing in Montreal.

A self-supporting troupe aided by volunteers and donors, the company
produces its own brilliant array of costumes.

“Every single costume is traditional, authentic,” said Migdesyan. “If
you touch the material, you’ll say it feels like a rug.”

Ashjian recorded the show’s music using bands in Armenia, again to
ensure authenticity.

“You can be entertained and at the same time learn something about the
history and music of one of the world’s oldest cultures,” Migdesyan
said.

Maisonneuve Blvd. E. For Tickets, Call 514-279-3066.

membres seront connus.

Islamic Revolution pioneered democracy in region – Archbishop

Tehran:

Archbishop of Azarbaijan’s Armenians Gregor Chiftechian said the
Islamic Revolution in Iran was the prelude to emergence of
democracy-seeking movements in the region especially in Islamic
countries.

Talking to IRNA on Wednesday, the archbishop termed Iran’s Islamic
Revolution as the biggest public uprising of the 20th century, saying
it was of very positive and constructive outcomes both for the
Iranians and nations of the other world countries, thanks to its
various freedom-seeking achievements.

He said the collapse of the monarchs (of Pahlavi regime) and the
establishment of the Islamic Republic system based on the divine
teachings was the cause of progress and remarkable achievements of the
nation in the past three decades.

Pointing to the role of the Iran’s Armenian community in the victory
of the Islamic Revolution, Archbishop Chiftechian said that just like
their Muslim fellow countrymen, the Armenians too rose against tyranny
and oppression in the country and played a major role in establishing
the Islamic Republic system in the country.

He noted that the Armenian community, including that of Azarbaijan,
are committed to safeguarding the Islamic Revolution and feel obliged
to protect it.

Thoroughly Investigate Attacks on Women, Demands NGO

London

London, Jan. 31 — Amnesty International has demanded that the Turkish
government should look into attacks undertaken against Armenian women
living in Turkey.

It was reported that four women were brutally attacked and all the
attacks took place in Samatya. It was also informed that all these
women were of Armenian origin and lived in Turkey. One of the attacks
proved fatal for a woman. The NGO asked that the authorities should
launch an impartial investigation into the matter. It stated that the
authorities should not ignore the fact that the attacks can be racial
and hateful in nature.

The organization also expressed major concern towards safety of women
in Turkey. The attacks were subjected towards elderly women. It stated
that they should be respected and not treated in such a shameful
manner during their twilight years. The attacks happened in a span of
two months but nothing has been done by the security officials.

Amnesty International has been working for betterment of the society
and also aims at protecting rights of people living across the world.

Armenia and Azerbaijan agree to continue Karabakh peace talks

Armenia and Azerbaijan agree to continue Karabakh peace talks

BAKU January 28

– Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mamedyarov and his Armenian
counterpart Edward Nalbandyan in Paris on Monday, January 28,
announced their support for a peaceful resolution fo the
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and agreed to continue the talks.

The announcement was made after a meeting between the OSCE Minsk Group
Co-Chairs and the foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia.

“The Co-Chairs continued discussions with the Ministers on the working
proposal to advance the peace process, which they submitted to the
sides in October 2012”. They also exchanged views on possible
confidence building measures, the OSCE said.

The Co-Chairs referred to their statements of April 14, 2011 and July
13, 2012, and discussed with the Ministers issues pertaining to
civilian flights to and from the airport in Nagorno-Karabakh.

The Foreign Ministers and the Co-Chairs stressed the importance of the
OSCE Minsk Group as the framework for negotiating a settlement of the
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. “The Foreign Ministers reiterated their
support for a peaceful settlement and their determination to continue
negotiations. The Ministers and the Co-Chairs agreed to a further
discussion of the peace process in the coming weeks,” the statement
said.

The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said that Mamedyarov had drawn the
attention of the international mediators and the OSCE
chairman-in-office personally to the accommodation of Armenian
refugees from Syria in the occupied Azerbaijani territories. “The
minister stressed the unacceptability and unlawfulness of such steps,”
the ministry said.

Azerbaijani President Ilkham Aliyev said earlier that the
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict could be resolved only if the territorial
integrity of his country was ensured.

“The conflict can be resolved only within the framework of the
territorial integrity of Azerbaijan. There is no other solution, and I
have no doubts that Azerbaijan will restore its territorial
integrity,” the head of state said.

He stressed that Azerbaijan was seeking to solve the issue “peacefully”.

“We hope for a peaceful resolution yet. To this end, the Armenian side
should unconditionally comply with the resolutions of international
organisations, including the U.N. Security Council, free the occupied
territories, and Azerbaijani citizens should return to their homes.
After that peace and stability will come to the region,” Aliyev said.

He said the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict was the “biggest source of
threat” in the region.

Azerbaijan and its people “will never allow a second Armenian state to
be created on their historical land”, he said.

“Nagorno-Karabakh will never get independence. The people who live in
Nagorno-Karabakh now, and the Azeris will certainly return there
should live in autonomy. This is a well known international approach,”
the president said.

He made it clear that Azerbaijan would “never step aside from its
position of principle”.

The head of state called for a speedy and fair settlement in Karabakh
on the basis of international law.

Speaking of the final status of Nagorno-Karabakh, he said it was “a
matter of the future”.

“We have said many times that we will never agree to any status for
Nagorno-Karabakh outside Azerbaijan, and international law supports
our positions,” the president said.

Aliyev urged Armenia to continue peace talks on Nagorno-Karabakh.

hunger strike

February 09, 2013 | 14:58

YEREVAN. – Armenian presidential candidate, opposition National
Self-Determination Union Chairman Paruyr Hayrikyan – who is recovering
at hospital from a gunshot wound after a recent assassination
attempt – left the hospital temporarily to see fellow contender Andreas
Ghukasyan, who is on a hunger strike.

Hayrikyan handed to Ghukasyan his open letter – which he issued to
fellow candidates, namely, opposition Freedom Party Chairman, former
PM Hrant Bagratyan and opposition Heritage Party Chairman, former FM
Raffi Hovannisian – with a call for a single oppositional candidate.
Hayrikyan’s assistant, Vahan Zatikyan told this to Armenian
News-NEWS.am.

According to Zatikyan, Ghukasyan said nothing, maintaining that he is
not familiar with the content of the letter. In his turn, Hayrikyan
asked Ghukasyan to end his hunger strike, but Ghukasyan gave no
answer.

And to the query as to whether – aside from Hovannisian and
Bagratyan – Paruyr Hayrikyan’s open letter is addressed to the other
presidential candidates, too, Hayrikyan’s assistant gave a positive
response.

To note, presidential contender Andreas Ghukasyan is on a hunger
strike ever since January 21, and under the slogan, `Stop Fake
Elections.’ He demands from the Central Electoral Commission to
declare the ruling Republican Party presidential candidate, incumbent
President Serzh Sargsyan’s formal nomination null and void. Over the
course of his hunger strike, Ghukasyan’s health condition is
fluctuating. He has limited his contact with news reporters, and is
trying to speak as little as possible to save his energy.
Representatives from Andreas Ghukasyan’s campaign headquarters and an
ambulance staff are on 24-hour duty at his side.
