Turkey slams Pope Francis for having recognized the Armenian Genocide

ANKARA (Diario ARMENIA).- After Pope Francis recognized the Armenian
Genocide as “the first genocide of the twentieth century” on June 3th,
the Foreign Minister of Turkey, Ahmet Davutoðlu, issued a statement
saying that “Pope Francis’ expressions are absolutely unacceptable”.

Davutoðlu said that during the last years of the Ottoman Empire,
“Turks, Armenians, and many others suffered immensely”, and accused
Armenia of selecting the Armenian suffering and “distort it in several
ways and attempts to present it as a genocide”.

In the statement, Davutoðlu tried to tell the Vatican what to do,
saying that “what is expected of the office of the Pope, under the
responsibility of the spiritual authority it has been endowed with, is
to contribute to world peace instead of bringing out enmity from
historical events”.

Finally, the Foreign Minister of Turkey considered that “Pope Francis’
expressions were absolutely unacceptable” and asked the Holy See to
“refrain from taking steps that may cause harm to our bilateral
relations that may be difficult to repair”.

“The Turkish state, the same that censors all those who speak about
the Armenian Genocide with its Criminal Code, intended to convince the
international community that the pope acted under the influence of the
Armenian community of Buenos Aires”, said Carolina Karaguezian,
director of the Buenos Aires region of the Armenian National Committee
of South America in a statement. “The Turkish
state attempts to impose denial and censorship, not only to their own
citizens, but also to everybody who understands that the road to peace
between nations is memory, truth and justice”, she added.

il Papa difende gli armeni

La Folla, Italia
8 giugno 2013

Soccer: Satisfaction for all at last on a glorious night in Yerevan

Malta Independent

SATISFACTION FOR ALL AT LAST ON A GLORIOUS NIGHT IN YEREVAN

Last Friday’s victory in Yerevan against Armenia was a very big
satisfaction for all those connected with football in Malta.

The MFA administration, the coach, the technical staff, the players,
the fans and why not, even the press, must be more than happy and
satisfied with the win.

It was something which we were all eagerly awaiting. It had to come
almost exactly 20 years after our historic first win in Tallinn,
against Estonia, in another World Cup match. That was a similar win
with a solitary goal scored by Kristian Laferla.

On that occasion, I was also lucky to have been present to witness
that first glorious moment for Maltese football away from our shores.
The same happened on Friday with the win reviving a bit of my memories
of that fantastic moment.

Then it was Pippo Psaila who led the team to glory. Today we have the
affable Pietro Ghedin, an Italian who is winning the sympathy of one
and all.

Since he took over the reins of the side in June of last year, Ghedin
has worked hard to see an improvement in the standard of our national
team players. His technical staff gave him all the support he required
and last Friday’s win was the result of their sheer determination to
put Maltese football a step ahead than the level seen in recent years.

This was not just a victory away from home. It was, of course, a
competitive match and this makes the result even more satisfactory as
it should help the team gain some much needed points to move up the
FIFA world rankings. There were, in fact, three other wins under
Ghedin, all away, in the friendlies against Luxembourg, San Marino and
Liechtenstein.

This win against Armenia, however, was the cherry on the cake, as
Ghedin himself told me at the end of Friday’s match.

I am glad for him, his technical staff and the players. They went
through a lot of sacrifices and did everything within their
possibilities to get where they wished to be.

But, as the Italian coach said, there is still a lot of work to be
done. The win and the three points should serve as further motivation
for the matches still to be played in this qualifying group, starting
with Bulgaria and Denmark at Ta’ Qali in September.

We must certainly keep our feet to the ground. It is common knowledge,
in fact, that our next two opponents possess superior quality than the
Armenians, even if the latter also showed they were a strong side.

To keep on the right track, our players need to continue showing
determination and commitment both in their preparations as well as on
the field of play whenever they play for their club or for the
national team.

Ghedin was full of praise for his players on Friday night. It was
evident that he was glad to see them repaying him for having given
them his confidence.

Well done to all involved. I am sure this was the right tonic our
football needed at present. A pity that it had to come at the end of
the season. But I am sure such glorious moments will never be
forgotten.

Armenian Genocide survivors Honored by Gov. Deval Patrick

Armenian Genocide survivors Honored by Gov. Deval Patrick
By Tom Vartabedian

June 9, 2013

BOSTON, Mass. – The Boston terrorist bombings may have taken a tragic
toll on more than 300 victims and devastated the city’s metropolis in
its wake. But it did little to deter the spirit behind the 98th
anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.

Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick honored Nellie Nazarian, the last
Armenian Genocide survivor in Merrimack Valley, with a special
proclamation from the Commonwealth. Front, from left, Jirair
Hovsepian, member, Greater Boston Commemorative Committee; Nellie
Nazarian, 101; State Rep. Linda Campbell (D-Methuen/Haverhill) and
State Rep. Brian Dempsey (D-Haverhill). Rear, Rev. Dr. Vart Gyozalian,
pastor, Armenian Church at Hye Pointe, Haverhill, and Debbie Nazarian,
Haverhill, with whom she makes her home.
True, a manhunt for the perpetrators resulted in the cancellation of a
Statehouse Commemoration and shut down businesses for the day, turning
the hub into a virtual ghost town.

But the remaining survivors of the Armenian Genocide are being
remembered with proclamations issued by Gov. Deval Patrick.

Moreover, they are being delivered by `messengers’ from the committee.

`It would have been nice to have the governor hand these proclamations
to these survivors on the day of our commemoration,’ said Jirair
Hovsepian. `But other circumstances prevented that. So we are meeting
with these survivors and making the presentation in the governor’s
name. It’s much more personal that way.’

Hovsepian traveled 50 miles from Belmont to visit Nellie Nazarian with
proclamation in hand. The 101-year-old survivor makes her home in
Haverhill with granddaughter Debbie Nazarian, who has taken over the
jewelry business started by her grandparents generations ago.

The event turned into a community-wide endeavor. Attending the home
ceremony were two state representatives from Nellie’s district, Brian
Dempsey, chairman, Committee on Ways and Means, and newly-elected
Linda Campbell, both of whom presented the guest of honor with House
resolutions.

A blessing was given by Rev. Fr. Vart Gyozalian, pastor, Armenian
Church at Hye Pointe.

Despite her advanced age, Nellie attended the Merrimack Valley
commemoration this year in North Andover with family members. She was
also the object of everyone’s affection.

The statehouse commemoration was expected to attract some 500 guests,
many of whom were prepared to walk the distance to the Rose Kennedy
Greenway and the Armenian Heritage Memorial for a service, followed by
lunch on the grounds.

`We’re hoping to visit as many survivors as we can to present these
citations,’ said Hovsepian. `It gets us to spend some quality time
with them and meet their families. They really appreciate the visit.’

Hovsepian, who operates a photography business, will return to
Nellie’s home with a video camera to document her history.

`With the centennial just around the corner, we’re making plans to
bring the different communities together for one large observance,’ he
pointed out.

Hrazdan Mall Vendors Protest; `We want our merchandise, we want to work’
Narek Aleksanyan

14:14, June 7, 2013

Irate vendors from the Hrazdan mall gathered today outside the
Government Building in Yerevan to protest the fact that they have been
forced to move from their former place of business and are banned from
setting up shop elsewhere.

The vendors handed a letter, addressed to RA Prime Minister Tigran
Sargsyan, to the reception desk of the Government Building spelling
out their grievances and the fact that 104 businesses have been
evicted from their stalls surrounding the Hrazdan Stadium due to a
urban construction project planned for the area.

In their letter, the vendors claim to have approached the owner of a
nearby market now in bankruptcy proceedings and that they reached an
agreement with the owner for them to relocate to his space.

They also say that on June 1, employees from the Stare revenue
Committee visited the Hrazdan Mall and put locks on their stalls,
arguing that the merchandise would have to be examined for tax
purposes.

The vendors are calling on PM Sargsyan to quickly resolve the issue
and thus allow them to continue working.

ArmRosgazprom Considering Opportunity to Import Iranian Gas in Armenia

TEHRAN (FNA)- ArmRosgasprom company is ready to consider opportunities
for purchasing Iranian gas to provide Armenia with alternative imports
of natural gas, Vardan Harutyunyan, CEO and head of the ArmRosgazprom
company’s board, said.

If Iranian gas is cheaper than the Russian, then the company may do
it, he said.

Armenian Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan had earlier said Armenia
doesn’t buy natural gas from Iran after Russia raised its price
because Iranian gas is still more expensive than Russian supplies.

In 2004, the Armenian government initiated construction of
Iran-Armenia gas pipeline.

The pipeline started operating in 2007. Armenia uses Iranian gas for
generating electric power, which is sent to Iran – 3kilowatt/hour for
1 cubic meter of natural gas.

Under the agreement, Iran will send 36 billion cubic meters of natural
gas to Armenia for 20 years.

The terms of the agreement can be prolonged for five years and gas
import can be enlarged to 47 billion cubic meters.

The Public Services Regulatory Commission’s decision to increase
consumer prices for natural gas took force today.

It mean consumers using up to 10,000 cubic meters of natural gas per
month will be paying 156 thousand drams, including VAT, for one
thousand cubic meters, up from former 132,000 drams.

ArmRosgazprom CJSC, established in 1997, enjoys the sole right for
importing and distributing Russian natural gas in Armenia. Russia
conveys its gas to Armenia through Georgia. The company’s shareholders
are Russia’s Gazprom and the Armenian government. ($1 – AMD 414.92).

Mistrust between Baku, Yerevan impedes Karabakh conflict settlement – expert

BAKU. June 7

The lack of trust between the Azerbaijani and Armenian presidents is
the reason for no progress in the Karabakh conflict settlement,
Matthew Bryza, former co-chairman of the Minsk group of the
Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE)
representing the United States, said.

Bryza said that in his opinion there was no progress in the talks so
far not because co-chairmen did not aspire it, but because the
countries did not treat the issue seriously. Bryza said that it
referred to the mistrust between the Azerbaijani and Armenian
presidents.

The U.S. president’s administration has to help creating trust between
the two sides, Bryza said.

Bryza said that it would be difficult to discuss this before the
presidential elections in Azerbaijan because presidents and candidates
were conservative ahead of elections.

Bryza said he hoped that the U.S. role and involvement in the talks on
the Karabakh conflict settlement would increase.
