Azerbaijan Not to Open Embassy in Israel Due to Respect for Iran

Fars News Agency, Iran

Expert: Azerbaijan Not to Open Embassy in Israel Due to Respect for Iran

TEHRAN (FNA)- A senior Azeri military expert and a former parliament
member dismissed the US reports about a military alliance between his
country and the Zionist regime of Israel, and said Azerbaijan even
refrains from opening an embassy in Israel due to its high esteem for
the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Azerbaijani military expert Vladimir Timoshenko, a lieutenant general
(retired) in the air defense forces and former MP, made the remarks in
an interview with News.Az.

Asked to comment on the information made public by the US sources that
Israel supposedly has an agreement with Azerbaijan on the use of
airfields by Israeli aircraft to attack Iran, he said, “It seems to me
that this is not the case. What these sources say is not true and
cannot be.”

“The government of Azerbaijan will never agree to use the republic’s
territory against Iran, even in exchange for a promise of gold
mountain, even if the Americans promise us to return Karabakh. I have
faith in this,” he continued.

“Notice that because of the respect for the neighborly relations with
Iran, Azerbaijan for 20 years has not opened its embassy in Israel,”
he added.

He reiterated that a war on Iran would harm Azerbaijan’s interests in
different ways.

“We are all aware of what we can face in the event of war in Iran. The
influx of a huge wave of refugees, many of which are our countrymen is
only one aspect of the problem, let alone the other aspects and
consequences of such a war for Azerbaijan.”

Yet, the former general could not evade the question about the
assortment of weapons mentioned in the USD 1.6bn worth agreement of
Azerbaijan with Israel. The weapons deal includes such types of
weapons as anti-ship cruise missiles like Gabriel, which are obviously
not directed against Armenia as they are only good for a war in the
sea.

In response to the question against whom these missiles as well as
unmanned aerial vehicles Heron and Searcher, air defense system of
Barak type with 75 missiles and radar EL/M-2080 Green Pine could be
directed, the retired general said, “Perhaps anti-ship missiles have a
hint to Iran but only a hint in the negotiations on the status of the
Caspian Sea.”

In Ohio, Mystery Robo-Calls Upend Race .

In Ohio, Mystery Robo-Calls Upend Race .

By ALICIA MUNDY

A mysterious group involved in the upset of an Ohio Democrat during
the congressional primary earlier this month continues to befuddle
both the loser and winner of that race, as well as the Justice
Department.

David Krikorian, a Cincinnati-area Democrat, appeared to have his
party’s nomination locked up, giving him a chance to take on a
vulnerable Republican incumbent, Rep. Jean Schmidt. But Mr. Krikorian
was upended by a 61-year-old truck driver who made $15,000 last year,
didn’t campaign and was unknown to the Democratic Party in the
Cincinnati area district.

The trucker, William Smith, benefited from a series of robo-calls
suggesting President Barack Obama supported him. The messages said
they came from the “Victory Ohio” super PAC, but neither the Federal
Election Commission or the Ohio State elections board has a record of
such a group.

For weeks, Mr. Krikorian, 44, an Armenian-American, has said he
believes Turkish-Americans and operatives with the Turkish Coalition
of America were behind the calls. Mr. Krikorian has been involved in
several public disputes over Turkish-American groups’ financial
support of Ms. Schmidt. Tensions between Armenians and Turks go back
100 years to the Turkish massacre and deportations of more than one
million Armenians.

Ms. Schmidt also lost her primary to physician Brad Wenstrup, who will
likely win the House seat in the solid Republican district.

This week, a new FEC report showed the Turkish Coalition of America’s
political-action committee, which has denied any involvement in the
robo-calls, donated $1,000 to the Ohio Congressional Victory Fund in
late February. Mr. Krikorian at first said the report showed a link
between robo-calls and the Turkish-American group, but that connection
didn’t seem to pan out.

The Ohio Congressional Victory Fund is part of Athens, Ga.-based PDS
Compliance Inc., a longtime Republican campaign accounting operation.
“All the committees here are registered with the FEC,” said PDS
President Paul Kilgore. He noted this company manages the “Ohio 2012
Victory Fund,” not “Victory Ohio.” He added: “We don’t know anything
about them – if you find out, let us know, cause we’re getting a lot of
questions.”

G. Lincoln McCurdy, treasurer of the Turkish Coalition of America’s
PAC, said in a statement that the $1,000 contribution was for an Ohio
GOP congressional fund-raiser on Feb. 16, hosted by House Speaker John
Boehner (R., Ohio). He said the PAC “had no involvement in or
awareness of unregistered PAC activities, including Victory Ohio Super
PAC, in recent Ohio congressional primary elections.”

The U.S. Attorney in southern Ohio has begun examining whether the
robo-call group violated federal-election disclosure laws. Fred
Alverson, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney, confirmed that the
government is reviewing the situation; he called it unusual, but
wouldn’t say more.

Mr. Smith, for his part, said that he had just filed to run in
December to get some “empathy for the working people” and has no idea
who ran the automated call campaign. He said he spent just a few
hundred dollars campaigning, mostly on filing fees and gasoline to
drive around the district, reaching out to people “at convenience
stores, gas stations, that sort of thing.”

On primary night, he said he was in his 18-wheeler driving between
Cincinnati and Cleveland when he got a call from a friend saying,
“Butch, you’ve won the nomination for the Democratic Party.”

“I said, ‘Sparky, please don’t mess with me, it’s not funny,’ ” said Mr. Smith.

Corrections & Amplifications
The Turkish Coalition of America’s political-action committee donated
to the Ohio Congressional Victory Fund, an FEC report says. An earlier
version of this article incorrectly called the group the Turkish
American Coalition, and didn’t specify that the donation was made by
its PAC.

The statement of the initiative group for the demolition of the
illegal constructions in Mashtots Park

The statement of the Police on the planned activities of dismantlement
in Mashtots Park are evidence that the police intends to continue
to defend the illegal constructions built with obvious essential
violations of requirements defined by the license on land of public
property in Yerevan community. We suppose that the police are aware
of their responsibility to the society for the protection of the
illegal property and the ensuing consequences.

Please note that Yerevan is a community, a community of the population
of Yerevan. The residents of the community can fulfill self-governance
within the administrative borders of Yerevan. The communal or state
ownership of an illegal construction on land which is community
property is recognized, regardless of who built it. The owner of the
land has the right to dismantle an illegal building on his land.

We continue to consider the right of the representatives of the
society protesting against illegal actions in Mashtots Park violated.

Hence, we believe that the necessity of actions for the protection
of the communal property of the residents of Yerevan persists.

At the same time, we expect the police to present more substantive
arguments to prevent the actions for self-defense of civil rights
besides use of force.

‘NOT A SINGLE VOTE FOR THE CRIMINAL REGIME!’- ARMENIAN OPPOSITION LEADER

Tert.am
30.03.12

Levon Ter-Petrosyan, Chairman of the opposition bloc Armenian National
Congress (ANC), made a speech at the ANC rally in Yerevan on Friday.

He spoke of the ANC election program, which, he said, has been approved
by all the political forces forming the ANC. He noted that the ANC
is the only political force in Armenia that does not need any special
election program. During its 4-year-long activities the ANC has shown
itself a political factor that can prove a real counterbalance to
the ruling regime.

Ter-Petrosyan stressed that the ANC has carried out tremendous work
to elaborate alternative programs of political and social reforms. The
ANC strategy envisages the following steps:

– 100 steps. A socio-economic policy reform program – Basic provisions
of the healthcare policy – A pension reforms program – A long-term
comprehensive education development program – A cultural manifesto –
An election process reform platform – A national environmental safety
concept – A long-term higher education and scientific development
program – A judicial reform concept – An industrial development
program – Urgent agricultural development measures

According to Ter-Petrosyan, the ANC will implement all the
aforementioned reforms should it come to power and create real
conditions for establishment of real democracy in Armenia.

“Given the fact that Serzh Sargsyan seized presidential power in
Armenia through gross violations of the Election Code, election
rigging and murdering peaceful demonstrators, we must immediately
raise the issue of his resignation and prosecution.”

The ANC leader stressed the need for forming impartial parliamentary
commissions with broad powers to prepare legally binding report on
the crimes on October 27, 1999, and March 1, 2008. Ter-Petrosyan
also calls for imposing severe punishment on the government officials
violating the right to freedom of assembly.
