Armenian national carrier Armavia experiences financial problems,
said Russia’s Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Yuri Slusar.

“We are grateful to the company for buying two Sukhoi Superjet-100
aircrafts. It is a pity they refused the second one,” he said in an
interview with the Rossiyskaya Gazeta.

Armavia was the first air company to purchase Sukhoi Superjet-100. At
the moment the aircraft is in Russia for the scheduled maintenance.

Speaking about Armavia’s refusal to buy the second Sukhoi Superjet,
Slusar said the decision was conditioned by “company’s financial
problems”, also a shareholder changed.

A handover ceremony of the first Sukhoi Superjet-100 that arrived in
Armenia was held at the Zvartnots international airport in Yerevan
in April 2011. Currently the Superjet is operated only by two air
companies – Armavia and Aeroflot.

Russian Armenians Urge Aznavour Against Performing Outside Akhaltsik

RUSSIAN ARMENIANS URGE AZNAVOUR AGAINST PERFORMING OUTSIDE AKHALTSIKHE MOSQUE

PanARMENIAN.Net – Russia’s Javakhk community addressed legendary
chansonnier Charles Aznavour with a request to refrain from performing
outside the recently restored Turkish mosque in Rabat fortress in
Akhaltsikhe, Georgia.

“Though according to unreliable Georgian media outlets, central and
local budgetary funds were allocated for restoration purposes, local
population points to the Turkish side as the sponsor.

The Akhaltsikhe fortress covers over seven acres. It houses
architectural monuments, including mosques and madrassas dating back
to 1752.

According to Georgian media outlets, as a result of Georgian-Turkish
negotiations Turkish side pushed forth Ahmedie mosque restoration,
along with the construction of Azizie mosque in Batumi. Under the
agreement, the mosque will be granted the status of a historical
monument.

Earlier, Georgian publications disseminated information expressing
Charles Aznavour’s readiness to headline a concert dedicated to the
fortress opening.

Should the son of Mikayel Aznavourian, Akhaltsikhe defense active
participant, perform outside the newly renovated Turkish mosque?

We address honorary citizen of Akhaltsikhe Charles Aznavour with a
request to reconsider his decision. We are sure performance in Surb
Nshan churchyard would receive better reaction by Samtskhe-Javakheti’s
Armenian population,” the statement reads.

Music: Drummer John Dolmayan Offers Timetable For New System Of A Do

DRUMMER JOHN DOLMAYAN OFFERS TIMETABLE FOR NEW SYSTEM OF A DOWN ALBUM

More than a year-and-a-half after the celebrated return of System of
a Down, it’s possible that we may now have a timetable for when the
Armenian-American quartet will be releasing a new album.

System of a Down have been gigging for about a year now, having
hit many parts of the world since their return. Despite the band’s
activity, not much information has been released about a new album,
which would be their first since ‘Hypnotize’ was revealed in Nov.

2005. System are set to play Canada’s Heavy MTL and Heavy T.O.

festivals this weekend, and drummer John Dolmayan took the opportunity
to talk with the Montreal Gazette about potential recording plans.

“We don’t know what will happen next, but I’d like to be in the
studio at this time next year … possibly making an album by 2014,”
says Dolmayan.” “If we were concerned about what people think, System
wouldn’t exist. I have no concerns about what the album will sound
like. I just worry about when it will come out.”

Dolmayan also spoke about the band’s reunion. “It was time,” Dolmayan
reveals. “While I do think the hiatus was good for the band, I wish
it wasn’t so long.”

Although System of a Down lace many of their songs with social and
political content, Dolmayan says that the band’s intention is not to
preach. “That’s not what people pay for. They pay to come see us play
live, create magic onstage, not to be told how to live their lives. …

If someone takes something positive out of our music, or what we say
on stage, that’s great. But we don’t ever want to force them.”

Stay tuned for our comprehensive coverage of the upcoming Heavy
MTL festival.

Olympics: Hamid Soryan gives Iran 1st Olympic gold in Greco-Roman wr

Hamid Soryan gives Iran 1st Olympic gold in Greco-Roman wrestling,
Vlasov also wins

LONDON – It always seemed a bit strange that wrestling-mad Iran had
never won an Olympic gold medal in the Greco-Roman discipline.

Russia’s Roman Vlasov reacts after defeating Armenia’s Arsen
Julfalakyan in the 74-kg Greco-Roman wrestling gold medal match at the
2012 Summer Olympics, Sunday, Aug. 5, 2012, in London. (AP Photo/Paul

Hamid Soryan ended that drought on Sunday, and he might not be the
only Iranian to scoop up gold in London either.

Soryan, the five-time world champion, won his country’s first gold
medal in men’s 55-kilogram, beating Rovshan Bayramov of Azerbaijan
2-0, 1-0.

“I’m hoping that I made everybody happy back home,” Soryan said.

Iran has 30 overall medals in freestyle but had only two, a silver and
a bronze, in Greco-Roman before Sunday. The Iranians also have a pair
of Greco-Roman world champions in Omid Noroozi at 60 kilograms and
Saeid Morad Abdvali at 66 kg, and both are considered the favorite in
their respective classes.

Roman Vlasov of Russia won gold as well on Sunday, defeating Armenia’s
Arsen Julfalakyan 1-0, 1-0 in the final of the men’s 74-kilogram
category.

The 21-year-old Vlasov, who hails from the same Siberian city of
Novosibirsk that produced wrestling great Aleksandr Karelin, now has
Olympic gold to match a world championship in 2011.

There was a lot of pressure on Vlasov to win gold. He didn’t
disappoint, and he’s in position to dominate this weight class for
years to come.

“It has not sunk in yet that I have the gold medal. I am just so
happy,” Vlasov said. “The whole country has supported me, has rooted
for me. This is a success of the whole country.”

Soryan has been the best Greco-Roman wrestler in the world at his
weight for years, but he stumbled badly in Beijing and finished fifth.
He bounced back with world titles in 2009 and ’10, but only an Olympic
gold would make up for 2008.

Soryan didn’t waste his second chance.

Soryan scored two late points to win the first frame. Bayramov then
needed either a pin – which was highly unlikely – or to win the last
two periods. But when Soryan scored midway through the second period,
the match was all but over.

“Beijing was a bit of experience, and I’ve used that experience to
achieve this victory,” Soryan said.

Bayramov, the defending world champion, lost in the Olympic final for
the second straight time after falling to Nazir Mankiev of Russia in
Beijing. He seemed overcome by the thought of another silver medal,
briefly putting his hands to his face when he was announced to the
crowd.

Sensing this, fans began clapping harder as if to let Bayramov know
that, in their eyes, he’d done all he could do.

Julfalakyan was trying to join his father and coach, Levon
Julfalakyan, a gold medalist for the Soviet Union in 1988, as the
first father-son duo to win Olympic gold medals.

Vlasov wasn’t having any of that.

The Russian was shaky at the outset, dropping the first period against
Denmark’s Mark Madsen in his opening match. Vlasov kept France’s
Christophe Guenot from scoring on him in last 30 seconds of the third
period to reach the semifinals, where he closed out Lithuania’s
Aleksandr Kazakevic 3-0, 1-0.

Julfalakyan hadn’t allowed a point in reaching the finals, where he
was overwhelmed by Vlasov.

“I respect him as an opponent. His father was an Olympic champion, and
every meeting I have with him is a difficult one,” Vlasov said.

As expected, the Americans didn’t get very far.

Spenser Mango won his first match over Egypt’s Abouhalima Abouhalima,
but Bayramov had little trouble with him in his next match, winning
4-0, 4-0. Mango dropped the first match of the consolation bracket to
Russia’s Mingiyan Semenov 2-0, 1-0.

“Work hard, that’s all I can do, and come back in 2016,” Mango said.

Ben Provisor also won his first match before Georgia’s Zurabi
Datunashvili beat him 1-0, 6-0. Provisor stopped wrestling after his
elbow popped out, though he was unlikely to win anyway.

BAKU: ‘No Sane Syrian Armenian Will Move To Nagorno-Karabakh’

‘No Sane Syrian Armenian Will Move To Nagorno-Karabakh’

Sunday, 05 August 2012 13:03

The Azerbaijani community of Nagorno-Karabakh will never agree with
the placement of Syrian Armenians in the Nagorno-Karabakh.

The statement came from Chairman of “Azerbaijani community of
Nagorno-Karabakh” Public Union Bayram Safarov.

However Safarov considers it unlikely that Syrian Armenians would
prefer to live in Nagorno-Karabakh.

“Regardless of who settle in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan,
they will not be able to live there for a long time. This is our land
and we gave nobody permission to move to our area. As soon as
Azerbaijan will liberate the occupied lands, illegally populated
residents in these areas will be withdrawn from there,” he said.

He also noted that this is another provocation of the Armenian leadership.

“Armenia itself is in poor condition, people are fleeing this country,
and I do not think any sane Syrian Armenian will stay there for a long
time. Just tossing this subject, the Armenian leadership is engaged in
another provocation. But in any case, we will put a barrier to such
provocation by Armenia and Karabakh separatists,” said Safarov.

According to the Armenian media, the office of party Dashnaktsutyun
has established a special committee on the problems of Armenians in
Syria.

“Head” of so-called “Kashatagh region”, created by the Armenians in
the occupied lands Gubadly, Zangilan and Lachin, Suren Khachatryan
said that he had received appeal from the Armenians of Syria for
resettlement in the land.

According to him, one agreement has been already reached on the
relocation of one family, and now they are ready to take another five
families. According to Khachatrian, until recent developments, seven
families were relocated from Syria, of which five families remained.
