First Sinology Conference Opens In Armenia

FIRST SINOLOGY CONFERENCE OPENS IN ARMENIA

China

The first conference on Sinology took place here Tuesday to discuss
Chinese and Armenian literature and cultural exchanges.

Under the theme of “Armenia and China: 20 years of cooperation in
the spheres of politics, economy, language and culture,” the two-day
conference mainly focused on Chinese literature and its connection
to Armenian literature, as well as methods of teaching Chinese to
foreign students.

The conference, organized by the Confucius Institute at Yerevan State
Linguistic University (YSLU), grouped scholars from China, Armenia,
Russia and Germany, among others.

Armenian Minister of Culture Hasmik Poghosyan said the conference
had a great importance for the cooperation between two countries,
adding that learning Chinese would produce many opportunities in life.

Since 1987, lots of events devoted to Chinese culture, history and
language had been organized, she said.

It was difficult to remember a single year that no event was organized
at the state level in the cultural field, she added.

“The Confucius Institute could be a symbol of cooperation between China
and Armenia. And the cooperation with China is one of the priorities
of the foreign policy of Armenia,” said Ashot Voskanyan, head of the
Asia, Africa and Oceania department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“The Confucius Institute at YSLU, the first one in Transcaucasia when
it was established three years ago, has already become an important
basis for the Armenian people to understand the history and culture
of China,” said Chinese Ambassador to Armenia Tian Changchun.

“Today more and more young people want to learn Chinese language and
culture,” the ambassador said.

This year, 40 Armenian students went to study in China due to
intergovernmental cooperation between China and Armenia, and 15
Chinese students studied in Armenia with scholarships offered by the
Armenian government.

Can You Imagine A World Without Journalists?

CAN YOU IMAGINE A WORLD WITHOUT JOURNALISTS?

Youth Ki Awaaz
November 5, 2012 Monday

India, Nov. 5 — Hailed as the 4th pillar of democracy, the world
without journalism would be a stone slab with only three legs,
unstable, collapsing every time anyone tried to sit on it. Being a
journalist is not a 9-to-5 profession or a monetarily-incentivised
occupation; journalism is a service to mankind, a way of life chosen
by a few daring ones who are not afraid to be the ‘last men standing’.

And foremost, journalism is not replaceable. Without this particular
genre of professionals, the world would be in darkness and obsolete
with no crux holding together the diversities of the world.

In the absence of the breed of journalists, cross-cultural awareness
would be a distant dream. The 21st century housed in today’s ‘global
village’ with continually deprecating boundaries and increasing
socio-cultural amalgamation would, without any journalistic medium,
be nothing more than a Picasso artwork, bits & pieces fitted together
making no sense of the obvious, oblivious to each others’ existence.

The world would be in chaos, plagued by a burgeoning population
that is largely uninformed, or worse, ill-informed. Without media,
one wouldn’t know that halfway across the world, a Gandhi and a
Mother Teresa were doing the great things that they did, or that, a
Hitler was born and that, a Hitler was overthrown. Would it even be
thinkable that the Gangnam style, born out of a Korean music video
would have Ban-Ki-Moon dance on it in a UN conference to promote
brotherhood, without the advent of social media? The answer is a blunt
no. Without journalism, there will be no impact. There would hardly
be any real-time effect of a high-profile meeting between Heads of
States, or framing of practises to curb global warming, since there
would be no one to report the outcome of the high-profile meet or
advocate the ill-effects of global warming to the masses. This way,
the urban would stagnate in its development while the rural would be
in an unnerving state of isolation.

The alacrity present in the nature of journalists sets them in a
league of their own. One might argue that we have mechanisms like
the Police forces and the Judiciary in place to prevent injustice
and crimes, but the case rests that the Police roll into action only
when they are alerted of a crime, and the Judiciary serves justice to
only those cases that reaches her chambers. The journalists are the
sole vigilantes in the society, trained to sniff out megalomaniacs,
operating under a seemingly calm surface at the behest of the honest
& humble citizen, and that’s why their absence would only lead to
exploitation and despair in the community. Without them, there would
be no voice of the masses.

Another dimension which journalists preserve is democracies. Without
their correspondence, the very essence of a democracy would be
dishevelled, and democracies will simply cease to be democracies.

There would be no trusted moderator between various perspectives to
give an unbiased yet well-researched opinion on common issues. While
some may remain ignorant and precarious towards their living
conditions, those who would wish to raise a voice against misdemeanours
would deem it inscrutable, because a voice is of no use unless it
is heard. This is preciously where the crucial role of a journalist
comes into play. Because he knows the definition of a democracy and
the fallacies that could potentially wreak havoc in the system, it
is his purpose to keep a vigil and bring to light stories of human
rights abuse, gender inequality, corruption and the likes. An excellent
example of the perils a society faces where journalism is primitive
is the case of the Armenian Genocide. A premeditated destruction of
Armenian lives and heritage with no real-time coverage by the media
not only allowed for massive extermination to go unnoticed but also
has Armenian Diaspora fighting for its recognition as a bona-fide
historical event today.

In the times of rising adversities, journalists play another precious
role, they provide hope to citizens of the world that no matter what
language you speak, what traditions you follow or what race you belong
to, we are all united by the common thread of humanity. Journalism
keeps alive that human spirit which beckons citizens halfway across
the world to help rebuild communities after Katrina and Fukushima,
it promulgates atrocities in Rwanda to human rights agencies to enable
humanitarian action and most importantly, journalists ensure that no
one even in the remotest corner of Earth feels isolated and that the
achievements and laureates of mankind is broadcast far and wide to
make us proud to be a part of this human race. Suffice to say, it was
probably not Pandora but a journalist who opened Pandora’s Box. And
that’s why, without journalism, this world would be unfathomable.

Meteorological Service Of Zvartnots International Airport May Be Sus

METEOROLOGICAL SERVICE OF ZVARTNOTS INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT MAY BE SUSPENDED DUE TO ARMAVIA’S DEBTS

arminfo
Tuesday, November 6, 17:09

If Armavia, the national air carrier of Armenia, fails to pay off
its debts for meteorological services of its aircrafts, Zvartnots
Aero-Meteorological Center CJSC will be unable to make the payments
in line with the contractual obligations of the Armenia International
Airports (operator of Zvartnots Airport) and will be forced to stop the
meteorological service of the airport within the next few days, Pavel
Manukyan, Deputy Director, Acting Director of the Aero-Meteorological
Center, lawyer Anahit Grigoryan and Head of the Technical Service
Garnik Petrosyan said at today’s press conference.

Manukyan said that over the past few months Armavia’s debt to the
Aero-Meteorological Center (the sole shareholder is the Armenian
Ministry of Nature Protection) has risen from 48 mln AMD (nearly 120
thsd USD) in early 2012 to 93.87 mln AMD. In the meantime, the debt of
the Center (more than 70 employees) to Armenia International Airports
is 14.86 mln AMD. Nearly 60% of the Center’s profit, which is by 50-60%
connected with Armavia’s payments, is transferred to the state budget.

He added that the termination of the contract with Zvartnots’ operator
means disruption of the transmission of the aero-meteorological
information to the Armavia aircrafts departing and arriving
at Zvartnots Airport, and in case of failure of connection with
international aero-meteorological databases, the aircrafts of other
air companies will also fail to get the information. The technical
director said that according to ICAO rules, the aero-meteorological
information should be available for everybody.

Meanwhile, the rules of ICAO say that each country itself decides
which organization in its territory is responsible for provision
of the meteorological information, and Armavia has no alternative
in this sphere. Notwithstanding this, Armavia can draw information
about the weather conditions of Zvartnots Airport from international
databases, but the ICAO rules and international conventions say that
the air company must pay to the party providing the information to
the database.

Manukyan said that the Aero-Meteorological Center provided the
information about the flight situation for 33 thsd AMD per flight,
but Armavia enjoyed discounts as the national air carrier.

The lawyer of the Aero-Meteorological Center pointed out that the
organization applied to the court to make Armavia pay the debt, but
now the Center is going to file a claim against the air company. She
said that Armavia made no payments over the past two months, and
earlier the payments made up a very small part of the payment for
aero-meteorological services, whereas there was a schedule of payments.

No longer hoping for Armavia’s response, the head of the
Aero-Meteorological Center applied to Armenian President Serzh
Sargsyan to take measures against Armavia. He pointed out that the
Center has nothing to do with Armavia’s bankruptcy processes, which
were allegedly initiated by the concessionaire of Zvartnots Airport.

Manukyan added that the General Department of Civil Aviation is aware
of the situation in the Aero-Meteorological Center but has no levers
of impact on Armavia.

Azerbaijani Refugees Surrender Themselves To France Under The Armeni

AZERBAIJANI REFUGEES SURRENDER THEMSELVES TO FRANCE UNDER THE ARMENIAN NAMES

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 6, ARMENPRESS. In a letter to the Azerbaijani website
avropa.infO… political refuge from Azerbaijan Rahim Namazov told
how the Azerbaijani people escape to Europe under the names of the
Armenians and claim their right for political refuge.

As reports “Armenpress” Namazov states that in Toulouse, France,
where he lives since 2010 an Azerbaijani woman Hadiya Bahadur living
under the Armenian name Zina Toumanyan is engaged in machinations
of transferring Azerbaijani people to Europe under the Armenian
names. In his letter Namazov states: “The Azerbaijani people come
here and pretend Armenians, that could scarcely survive Azerbaijani
prosecutions against them.”

According to him Hadiya Bahadur has already transferred several
families to France with false documents from Azerbaijani town of
Shaki and earned EUR 12,000 from each of them. Namazov states in his
letter: “After I sow this disgrace I decided to inform Azerbaijani
society about this. I called the Chairman of “Gilan Holding” Jamil
Muradov. He promised to help me to attract the attention of the
Azerbaijani authorities on this issue. In my turn I have decided to
raise this question in the international mass media.”

Azerbaijan Sent A Protest Note To Australia

AZERBAIJAN SENT A PROTEST NOTE TO AUSTRALIA

Azerbaijan’s embassy in Turkey has sent a note to Australia’s
embassy in Turkey, Azerbaijani media inform about this. As it was
reported before the legislative body of the South Wales state of
Australia adopted a resolution of recognizing Nagorno Karabakh as
the independent state.

Now the Azerbaijanis are angry with this resolution. South Wales state
of Australia had adopted a resolution on “Recognition of the right
of peoples, including Nagorno Karabakh people to self-determination”.

The resolution calls on the government of Australia to recognize the
Nagorno Karabakh Republic and establish relations with it as with

ARMENIAN RULING PARTY’S SENIOR OFFICIALS ACCIDENTALLY MEET SECOND PRESIDENT – NEWSPAPER

NEWS.AM
November 06, 2012 | 07:16

YEREVAN. – According to well-informed sources, Armenia’s National
Assembly (NA) Speaker Hovik Abrahamyan was not the sole person who
recently spoke with second President Robert Kocharyan, Hraparak
daily reports.

“While welcoming Hovik Abrahamyan at the airport [and from his official
visit to the Czech Republic], NA Deputy Speaker [and ruling Republican
Party (RPA) Spokesperson] Eduard Sharmazanov and RPA [NA] Faction
leader Galust Sahakyan warmly approached a vehicle, which was coming
toward them from the runway, thinking that it is the distinguished
Abrahamyan [inside].

But the vehicle stopped, the doors opened, and a fairly young-looking
Robert Kocharyan came out. He shook their hands in salutation,
asked how they were. “We were going to salute [him likewise], what
else would we have done? We weren’t going to say ‘we are waiting for
Hovik,’ they justified themselves at the faction,” Hraparak writes.
