Ankara: Van-Yerevan Flights End Before Starting

VAN-YEREVAN FLIGHTS END BEFORE STARTING

Hurriyet, Turkey
March 30 2013

ISTANBUL – Hurriyet Daily News
Erdem GuneÅ~_

Direct flights between the Turkish city of Van and the Armenian
capital Yerevan have been canceled before they even began operating.

BoraJet, the company handling the flights, canceled the agreement
after a low number of passengers during preliminary flights, Deputy
Governor of Van Mehmet Yuzer said.

However, an Armenian tour agency, Narekavank, issued a statement March
29 saying that it was the Turkish aviation authorities who suspended
the first flight between Yerevan and Van.

According to the agency, the decision was made on March 28 by Turkey’s
General Department of Civil Aviation.

“The organizers were keen on staying away from politics. It is very
sad and discouraging that Turkish authorities were not able to do
the same and eventually let politics interfere with this promising
initiative,” the statement read.

Turkey’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation declined to comment
and BoraJet officials have said the reason for the cancelation were
passenger numbers far below the capacity of the flights.

Yuzer also said the Directorate did not inform them of any such issue
and that the decision was made only by BoraJet.

“We were not informed by Turkey’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation
to cancel the flights. The necessary permissions were already granted
by Iran and Armenia,” Yuzer told the Hurriyet Daily News on March 29
in a phone interview.

The flights were planned to operate on April 3, despite closed borders
between the two countries, marking the first of their kind for Turkey’s
eastern cities.

Disappointment by cancelation

Ayanis Travel Agency from Van said they were disappointed by the
cancelation as they had made campaigns for the upcoming season.

Abdullah Tuncdemir, the director of Ayanis Tourism Agency, said this
was an important step to reviving the economy in the region.

“The Armenian and Iranian markets are so close to us but for years
we did not have the chance to open the doors for these countries as
locals. We had arranged our package tour and they are all in vain now.

We avoid politics here, the reason is only trade, economy and the
peace between people,” he told the Daily News by phone.

ARMENIA TO BID FOR EURO 2020 – FA CHIEF

YEREVAN, Armenia, March 29 (R-Sport) – Armenia will bid for the
right to host several Euro 2020 matches, the country’s FA chief Ruben
Airapetyan said Friday.

The tournament will be the first to be shared among 13 countries,
with the aim being to reduce the economic burden on any single nation.

Airapetyan announced that the 55,000-seater Hrazdan stadium in the
capital city of Yerevan could stage three group matches and one
quarterfinal.

“The Armenian president set a goal to reconstruct Hrazdan stadium
in the next five years and it will be one of the best in Europe,”
football chief said.

The arena, named after a nearby river, was built in 1971 and renovated
in 2008.

The Euro 2020 bidding process will start in April, with the final
decision to be made in September 2014.

Others to have expressed hosting interest include several cities in
Ukraine, Munich, Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium and Bulgaria’s Vasil
Levski stadium in Sofia. Rome, Berlin, Istanbul and Madrid have also
been mooted as possible venues.

The organizing committee of the 2018 World Cup in Russia has also
expressed an interest in staging some of the games as a Luzhniki
Stadium legacy feature.

Euro 2020 will feature 24 teams, the second to do so after Euro 2016
in France.

UEFA president Michel Platini said last month that interested nations
may apply for group games plus one knockout round fixture, or the
final plus the two semifinals – or both.

Robert Zildjian, Musical Cymbal Co. Founder, Dies At 89

ROBERT ZILDJIAN, MUSICAL CYMBAL CO. FOUNDER, DIES AT 89

Boston Herald, MA
March 29 2013

by Ira Kantor

Robert “RZ” Zildjian, whose eponymous moniker could be seen on the
musical cymbals of rock legends and jazz virtuosos alike, has died
at the age of 89.

Zildjian was the Boston-area founder of the Sabian Inc. musical
cymbal manufacturing company. His death was confirmed by the company
in website and Facebook posts.

“A tireless and dynamic force within the drum industry, he inspired
each one of us in the Sabian family to work harder, to reach farther,
to make a difference – and he led us by example,” the company wrote.

“With his bare hands he shaped the Sabian cymbal brand into his life’s
story – and by extension we became his family.”

Zildjian was the descendant of 10 generations of Armenian cymbal
makers. His father, Avedis Zildjian, immigrated to Boston from
Turkey at the beginning of the 20th century. Together with Zildjian’s
great-uncle Aram, Avedis founded the Avedis Zildjian Company, where
they began manufacturing cymbals for the rest of the world, according
to Sabian’s website.

At the age of 14, Zildjian, along with his older brother Armand,
began apprenticing at his father’s company. In time he would serve
several roles, including accountant, advertising executive, artist
relations and sales as demand for cymbals soared post-World War II
and into the rock ‘n’ roll era.

Zildjian then went on to set up a subsidiary, Azco, in Meductic,
New Brunswick, Canada in 1968.

When Ziljian’s father died in 1979 at the age of 90, the entire cymbals
business was left to him and Armand. Yet their partnership would not
last as Armand inherited the controlling share, according to Sabian’s
website. This caused two years of litigation in Massachusetts courts
and resulted in a settlement under which Armand kept the Avedis
Zildjian Co. and Robert Zildjian received the Azco subsidiary.

Zildjian opened Sabian in 1981, an acronym formed from the first two
letters of the names of his children, Sally, Bill and Andy.

“I’d like to be the best cymbal company in the world,” Zildjian said
in an early Sabian interview. “I’m not that worried about being the
biggest. But if we are the biggest, that’s good, too. But being the
best is primary … that’s my motivation.”

Further details were not immediately available.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

ROBERT ZILDJIAN, FOUNDER OF MUSICAL CYMBAL MANUFACTURING COMPANY SABIAN INC., DIES AGED 89

Vancouver Sun, BC, Canada
March 29 2013

The Associated Press

BOSTON – Robert “RZ” Zildjian, founder of the Sabian Inc. musical
cymbal manufacturing company, has died. He was 89.

Sabian announced Zildjian’s death on its website Thursday. The firm
was closed until Monday and the company announcement had no details
about his death.

Zildjian founded Sabian in 1981 after a legal battle with his brother,
Armand, over their inheritance of the family business, Avedis Zildjian
Co., a major cymbal maker. The companies remain competitors.

The family’s U.S. business was founded in the Boston area in 1928 by
their father, Armenian immigrant Avedis Zildjian, and a great-uncle.

The rock ‘n’ roll era brought an expanding demand for its percussion
products.

RZ Zildjian began working for his father as a teenager and set up a
subsidiary, AZCO, in Meductic, New Brunswick, Canada, in 1968.

CBC Canada
March 29 2013

The founder of Sabian Cymbals, the New Brunswick company that supplies
cymbals for drummers around the world, has died.

Robert “RZ” Zildjian died on Thursday. He was 89.

“A tireless and dynamic force, he inspired each one of us in the
Sabian family to work harder, to reach farther, to make a difference
and he led us by example,” wrote the company on its Facebook page.

“We draw comfort from the knowledge that his spirit will live on in
the music made by artists the world over.”

Zildjian founded Sabian Cymbals in Meductic in 1981 after a legal
battle with his brother over inheritance of the Zildjian family
business.

The two companies remain competitors and world leaders in the cymbal
business.

Sabian cymbals are still made in the southern New Brunswick town
where the Zildjian company once had its production line.

Keeping production in Canada was one factor in the split between the
Zildjian brothers.

Fans of his cymbals include Phil Collins, Neil Peart of Rush and
Keith Harris of the Black Eyed Peas.

Sabian’s current president is Zildjian’s son, Andy.
