Syria: Armenian Christians Pressured to Convert to Islam

Arabic language websites

reported earlier this
week that the al-Qaeda-linked Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant –
which, throughout the course of the war against the Assad government
has committed any number of atrocities, from decapitating `infidels’
to burning churches – has successfully `forced’ two Armenian Christian
families to convert to Islam.

A video accompanies some of these reports. In it, what appears to be
an elderly Armenian man stands alongside an Islamic cleric who
announces the Christian man’s conversion to Islam – to thunderous
cries of `Allahu Akbar!’ In his exultation, the cleric makes
exuberant statements like `You see, we have no honor without Islam –
without proclaiming aloud that `There is no god but Allah and Muhammad
is his prophet!’ (Without the religious jargon, this is simply another
way of saying, `Only by joining our team can you ever escape
dishonor,’ the lot of all non-Muslim, subhuman
`infidels.’
)

The cleric also adds that, because the man is the head of his
household, his Christian wife and children are all now Muslim as well
– `all praise to Allah!’ Naturally, if they reject their new Islamic
identity, they become `apostates,’ a crime punishable by death.

The rather flippant and sarcastic text that accompanies this video
points out the obvious:

*After decades of peaceful coexistence between the various religions
of Syria, and after decades of living under the moderate form of
Levantine Islam =85 these two Armenian families were none too keen on
entering Islam or learning of its eminence – except at the hands of
DAASH [al-Qaeda-linked Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant], which
has been presenting a `rosy’ picture of Islam and Muslims, by way of
chopping heads, whipping people, and general repression. Thus did
these two Christian Armenian families finally enter Islam, `willingly’
– but only at the hands of DAASH.*

In other words, it’s `curious,’ to say the least, that Christians who
for generations lived amid moderate Muslim majorities in Syria but
opted to remain Christian, are now `suddenly’ attracted to Islam – and
at the hands of a jihadi organization that has been bombing churches,
kidnapping and beheading Christians, and even teaching children to
slaughter
Christians
wherever they may be found.

Sound like genuine conviction to you? Maybe things like the 2012 news
that `a family of Armenian Christians was found murdered, and all
members of the family horribly
decapitated’
in Syria is compelling these Armenian families into seeing the
`wisdom’ of embracing Islam?

Here we reach an important but overlooked historical point. While
many Christians, past and
present,
have indeed willingly embraced
martyrdom – the sword,
death – rather than recant Christ for Muhammad, the majority of born
Christians, when faced with converting to Islam or dying, have opted
for the former. Indeed, call it a lack of idealism or a lack of
faithfulness, when faced with converting to the `winning team’ of
Islam or simply being third-class subjects (*dhimmis*), many nominal
Christians throughout the centuries have opted for the former.

That is precisely how and why the so-called `Islamic world’ – the
majority of which was almost entirely Christian before the Islamic
conquests
– came into being: a fact Western people were once well acquainted
with, before the current age of political correctness and
alternate
realities fell upon us.

Update:
New information has just emerged concerning the recent killing of a
young Armenian man, Minas, for refusing to convert to Islam, again at
the hands of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (so much for
their claims that they do not threaten Christians to convert).

He was reportedly killed in one of ISIL’s dungeons in Aleppo, north
Syria, which has a notable Armenian minority.

According to
iNews,
`Minas and his father were held in ISIL’s prison for 115 days,
according to one activist, and his accusation was that he refused to
submit [to Islam, i.e., convert].’

iNews adds that activists from the region sent the accompanying
picture, saying it is of the slain Minas. Others confirm that the
picture is of a slain Armenian in Syria, but not of Minas. In any
case, the man appears to be wearing the garments of the Armenian
Evangelical Church of Aleppo.

The same report mentions other Christian Armenians slaughtered,
including one who reportedly had `his head chopped off and placed in a
biscuit box.’

Vu and Paranoia in the Deep
StateHow
long can Turkey’s democratically elected leader rule by
tyranny-of-the-majority?
BY James Traub
JANUARY 10, 2014
[image: ]
At a moment when the revolutionary convulsions of the Middle East are
dissolving into chaos and renewed authoritarianism, the one stable
democracy in the region — Turkey — is twisting its bed sheets in a
nightmare of corruption, conspiracy, and state repression. Only a few years
ago, Turkey preened as the model for a new age of Middle Eastern
enlightenment; now democratic rule seems endangered there, as it is
throughout the region.
The events that have consumed Turkish political life began Dec. 17, when
police in Istanbul arrested 18 people on corruption charges in a dawn raid.
Among those detained were construction magnates who supported the Justice
and Development Party (AKP) of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and the
sons of three of Erdogan’s ministers. Rumor had
itthat
Recep’s son, Bilal, would be next. Erdogan responded by firing some of
his ministers and shuffling others — and by getting rid of hundreds of
police officers and prosecutors who were responsible for the probe.
Additional fraud investigations led to new arrests; those prosecutors were,
in turn, dismissed. Erdogan is now seeking to gain control over the
judiciary in a brazen violation of Turkey’s separation of powers.
The drama has unfolded as a kind of shadow play. Turks are extraordinarily
attuned to the supposed machinations of a “deep
state
.” In years past, this expression referred to military and intelligence
figures who were said to pull secret strings, and who had overthrown
civilian governments on three separate occasions. Over the years, Erdogan
has sapped, confronted, and ultimately smashed the power of the military.
Now a new cabal is said to be pulling the levers of power: followers of
Fethullah Gulen, a moderate Islamist leader based in the United States who
has had a falling-out with Erdogan and whose followers in the police and
the judiciary are said to be wreaking their revenge. A column by a scholar
at a pro-regime think tank bore the
headline,
“Turkey’s Parallel State Strikes Back,” and called for the “Gulen Movement”
to be dismantled.
When I was reporting in Ankara and Istanbul a few years ago, I heard as
much about the Gulenists, who were said to be here, there, and everywhere,
as I did about the deep state. And as with the military, the shadows
reflect very real substance. Gulen’s followers, many of them successful
professionals, control major media properties and occupy prominent slots in
public service. They can be roughly compared to Freemasons, whose habits of
secrecy, and whose self-evident success, make them fertile sources of
paranoia (or once did). Turkey is now having its anti-Gulenist moment, as
the United States once had its fervent, if short-lived, anti-masonry
movement.
As journalistic shorthand, the story of Islamist versus Islamist is both
entertaining and plausible. Erdogan really had split with Gulen, whose
growing power he may have feared. In November, the prime minister had
signed legislation which would have forced the
closingof
almost all of the 3,100 prep schools Gulen operates in Turkey. The
raids
came the following month. Many Turks, encouraged by the regime, connected
the dots. The problem with this neo-deep-state explanation is that the
investigations had begun months earlier, and in any case the allegations of
political corruption seem all too well-founded. Turkish politics runs on
black money, especially from the construction industry. What’s more, Yavuz
Baydar, a columnist for the English-language *Today’s Zaman*, says that
while Gulenists dominate the upper ranks of the police, they do not control
the judiciary. (The Zaman Group, which owns the newspaper, is itself
Gulenist, though the English-language paper is generally considered
independent.)
Even if the Gulenists are getting their revenge, they are only turning on
Erdogan a tool he has been quite effective in wielding in the past. The
final nail in the coffin of Turkish military power came in the form of
spectacular investigations and trials of the most senior military officers,
starting in 2007, for allegedly conspiring to overthrow the state. The
so-called Ergenekon trials depended on the “heavy use of fabricated
evidence,” as Sinan Ulgen, a former diplomat and scholar now at the
Carnegie Endowment in Brussels, puts it. At the time, said Ulgen, the AKP
not only remained silent, but “attacked people who were criticizing the
legal process and categorized them as putschists.” Now, the party has
retrospectively turned on the prosecutors: Erdogan’s chief of staff wrote
in a recent columnthat
the military had been the victim of the same “plot” which was now
engulfing the AKP. Gulenist justice, in short, was just fine so long as the
victims were the regime’s rivals.
Among the prosecutors that Erdogan has summarily fired is Zekeriya Oz, the
deputy prosecutor of Istanbul — famed as the chief man behind Ergenekon.
Stories of Oz’s own alleged corruption have begun to
circulatein
the media. Yet graver than the mass firings and reassignments, whose
number is said to have reached 2,000, is Erdogan’s attempt to subordinate
the judiciary by re-writing the laws governing the Supreme Council of
Judges and Prosecutors, a body which the government had reformed only three
years ago in order to comply with European Union standards. Erdogan wants
the body to report to the justice minister, and thus to the government. The
E.U. has admonishedthe
Turkish government not to compromise the independence of the
investigations.
In this fast-moving, opaque, and tangled tale, the ultimate narrative is
not Erdogan versus Gulen or even cops versus robbers; it’s the government
against democracy. After 11 years in office, Erdogan has become utterly
intolerant of independent voices or of autonomous institutions. “If you
don’t like him,” as Hakan Altinay, a Brookings scholar in Istanbul, puts
it, “you must be a traitor, an Alawite, or a ‘White Turk'” (a secularist).
Turks have lived with this constricting reality for several years now; the
rest of the world learned of it last summer when Erdogan sought to crush
peaceful protests in Istanbul’s Gezi Park, and accused his critics of
harboring various bizarre foreign agendas.
Turkey is no police state, but criticizing the government, Erdogan, or the
AKP is becoming more dangerous all the time. Last year, the state
jailed40
journalists, making it the world’s leading jailer of the press for the
second year in a row. Turkish journalists feel that the vise is steadily
closing. After we spoke, Yavuz Baydar sent me the following email: “As we
communicate, access to the video portal Vimeo is banned in Turkey. More
censor assaults to Internet is to be expected, since it is the only free
domain left under the circumstances. This horrible déjà vu never ends.”
This is the kind of message one used to get from the Middle East before the
Arab Spring. It’s a vivid reminder that Turkey’s democratic transition is
both incomplete and subject to serious reversal. Erdogan rules through the
kind of tyranny-of-the-majority which populist leaders use to dominate
democratic states with weak checks and balances. That rule, in turn,
depends on winning electoral majorities, as he has done. The prime minister
was able to depict the vast crowds in Gezi Park as urban elitists. He will
continue using this rhetoric unless and until the public deals him an
electoral blow.
And that may happen. Erdogan’s constitutional tenure as prime minister is
ending, and he hopes to be elected president later this year. Before then,
on March 30, Turkey is holding nationwide municipal elections, which are
widely seen as a referendum on Erdogan’s leadership. The AKP controls the
government of both Ankara and Istanbul. Until Dec. 17, says Sinan Ulgen,
“both races were going to be won easily by the AKP.” Now both, and
especially Ankara, are seen as open. In short, Turks have a chance to
decide how much they care about an independent judiciary, a free press, and
autonomous institutions. That is how democracies renew themselves.

STRONG SHOW OF SUPPORT AT YET ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL PRELATE’S NEW YEAR AND
CHRISTMAS DINNER

– HAKOB & HILDA BAGHDASSARIAN SPONSOR CHAMLIAN GYM
WITH $250,000 DONATION

– GENEROUS DONATIONS BY THE CAROLAN AND KHACHATURIAN FAMILIES

– EDDIE & TALIN AMROYAN ONCE AGAIN HOSTED THE DINNER

On Monday, January 6, 2014, “Bagramian” Hall in Montebello was abuzz
with Christmas cheer as six hundred Prelacy sponsors and supporters had
gathered to celebrate the Birth and Theophany of our Lord Jesus Christ at
the “Prelate’s New Year and Christmas Dinner”.
Presided over by H.E. Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, Prelate, the
annual dinner has become a beloved tradition within the community, bringing
together members of the extended Prelacy family for an evening of festivity
filled with warmth, love, and good cheer.
Among the dignitaries and honored guests in attendance were Consul
General of Lebanon the Honorable Johnny Ibrahim, Deputy Consul General of
Armenia the Honorable Artak Galstyan, Catholicosate Central Executive
members Khajag Dikijian and Vahe Yacoubian, ARF Central Committee Chair Dr.
Viken Hovsepian and member Dr. Viken Yacoubian, representatives of ARS,
Homenetmen, Hamazkayin, ANC, parishes, schools, Prelacy committees, Forest
Lawn, and Glendale Memorial Hospital.
The event is the undertaking of the Religious and Executive Councils
and is organized by the Prelacy Ladies Auxiliary. This year’s dinner was
hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Eddie and Talin Amroyan, who also hosted the event
last year.
Master of Ceremonies Rev. Fr. Vazken Atmajian announced the start of
the official program with the entrance of the clergy procession.
The Prelate and clergy members entered the dimmed hall, illuminated
only by the glow of candlelight, as the beautiful sound of Christmas hymns
filled the serene atmosphere. Rev. Fr. Boghos Tinkjian read the Gospel
reading from Luke on the Birth of Jesus Christ, after which the traditional
wine and bread ceremony (tatakh) took place.
Prior to blessing the tables, the Prelate presented the evening’s
mementos, a decoration with the symbol of “faith, hope, and love”, donated
by Mr. and Mrs. Harout and Christina Jabarian. His Eminence blessed the
mementos, and through them the homes of the attendees, and also blessed the
food.
On behalf of the Ladies Auxiliary, Mrs. Maral Tarpinian welcomed the
guests and conveyed wishes for a happy New Year.
Guests then watched the video message of His Holiness Aram I. His
Holiness first conveyed New Year and Christmas well wishes to the Prelate
and guests and commended the devoted service of His Eminence, Councils, and
volunteers to our church and nation. He then spoke of the New Year and
Christmas season as a time for introspection both in our individual and
collective lives, and a time for renewal given that the earthly mission of
Christ was the restoration and renewal of mankind. His Holiness also
reflected on the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, advising “for
reassessment and renewal to become the guiding principals of our lives and
for preparations for the Armenian Genocide centennial to acquire an
important place on the agenda of our church and community in the course of
this year”.
His Holiness took the opportunity to share a few thoughts with the
youth. First, he stressed that life is a gift from God and it must be
sustained by spiritual and moral values and with a clear vision, otherwise
it becomes a life with no meaning and importance. Therefore, we must make
our life a purpose-driven life by articulating in our actions those values,
principles, and ideals which constitute our Armenian Christian identity,
said His Holiness. Second, the Pontiff spoke of the pivotal importance of
youth participation in our church and community, stating “our youth don’t
belong at the periphery of our life. They are all to participate actively
in the life of our church and community and should assume an important role
in all spheres and at all levels of our church and community life.”
On behalf of the Executive Council, Chairlady Mrs. Rima Boghossian
greeted the guests and gave a brief overview of the Prelacy’s scope of
endeavors. Noting that His Holiness Aram I proclaimed 2014 “The Year of
Armenian Elders”, Mrs. Boghossian invited all to give due recognition and
honor to our elders. In conclusion she wished for all to embark on a new
year of service with renewed spirits and efforts, wished for goodness for
the Armenian nation, and especially for peace in Syria.
The representatives of the Lebanese and Armenian nations were then
invited to deliver their remarks.
Consul General of Lebanon Johnny Ibrahim first congratulated the
Prelate and the Prelacy family, wishing for a blessed New Year, Nativity and
Theophany for the Armenian people. He noted that the Birth and Theophany of
Jesus Christ symbolizes renewal, and is an invitation to cleanse our hearts
and souls and start anew with renewed spirits, love and harmony. He also
thanked the Prelate for his leadership and wished for many more years of
friendship and collaboration between the Lebanese and Armenian communities.
Deputy Consul General of Armenia Artak Galstyan conveyed his well wishes for
the New Year and Christmas, wishing that the season is a time for spiritual
renewal and a time to look to the future with renewed hopes and faith.
Fr. Vazken then acknowledged special guests in attendance, among
them Archbishop Vatche Hovsepian, and brought to the guests’ attention that
on their tables was a prayer dedicated to Armenian mothers, sponsored by
Mrs. Kohar Sulahian.
During dinner, guests enjoyed a cultural program of instrumental
music by the “Donagan” Band, songs by Gevorg Tchakmanyan, Vahakn Hovents
accompanied on the piano by Armenouhi Terteryan, and a performance by
students of Lilia Dance Studio. Throughout the evening guests also enjoyed
a slideshow of the Prelacy’s endeavors in the past year.
The program concluded with the Prelate’s message.
His Eminence began by thanking God for granting another year and
opportunity for the Prelacy family to come together to exchange
felicitations to one another on the Birth and Theophany of our Lord. He
wished for the New Year to be filled with an abundance of health, happiness,
and prosperity for all, and for the Christmas message and promise of love
and hope to remain the guiding light of our lives, and an inspiration to
live in His holy example. The Prelate then presented some highlights from
the previous year, including Sunday School activities, new pastor
assignments, new publications, participation in the historic Bishop’s Synod
in Etchmiadzin, among others.
The Prelate thanked the members of the various Prelacy committees
for their service and the sponsors for their contributions to the
realization of the Prelacy’s endeavors. He expressed gratitude to the
evening’s hosts Mr. and Mrs. Eddie and Talin Amroyan for their generous
sponsorship for the second year, to Mrs. Tina Carolan, the Carolan Family
Foundation, and the Khachaturian Family for their continued benevolence, and
to Forest Lawn for their donation to establish the Prelacy Good Samaritan
Fund. The Prelate also commended the members of Prelacy Schools for their
commitment to the intellectual and emotional development of our youth, and
thanked school sponsors, specifically the Dream Fund, for their generous
support. Speaking of school sponsors, the Prelate announced that he had
special news to share. The hall erupted in applause as His Eminence
announced that Prelacy and community benefactors Mr. and Mrs. Hakob and
Hilda Baghdassarian had undertaken the sponsorship of Chamlian School’s new
gym with a donation of $250,000. (See full text of Prelate’s message
separately).
In conclusion, the Prelate commended the service of the Religious
and Executive Councils and all affiliated bodies, and wished for the
endeavors of the coming year to proceed smoothly guided by the Christmas
tidings of love, harmony, and goodwill.
The joyful and memorable evening came to a close with the Prelate’s
benediction and the Cilician and Pontifical anthems.

PRELATE CELEBRATES CHRISTMAS DIVINE LITURGY
AT ST. MARY’S CHURCH IN GLENDALE

On Monday, January 6, 2014, the Glorious Birth and Theophany of our
Lord Jesus Christ was celebrated with great ceremony in Prelacy Churches
with Divine Liturgy and the blessing of water symbolizing the Baptism of our
Lord.
H.E. Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, Prelate, conducted services
and delivered his Christmas message at St. Mary’s Church in Glendale.
Parish Pastors assisted at the altar. H.E. Archbishop Yeprem Tabakian also
participated in the service.
The Prelate began his message with the words of the angels’ praise,
“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men”,
saying, the earth and the heavens rejoiced for our Savior was born. Our
Savior became incarnate for mankind, and it is our duty to heed His
commandments and will. Our Prince, born in the most humble circumstances,
came to this world to give us an example of humility and love by which to
live our lives.
The Prelate noted that the Baptism of Christ in the River Jordan by
John the Baptist was yet another demonstration of Christ’s obedience to
God’s will which He demonstrated throughout His earthly life. The Cross
used in the ceremony symbolizes Christ’s Crucifixion and ultimately His
triumph over death, stated the Prelate, and those who drink from the blessed
water are cleansed and humble themselves to God’s will. His Eminence also
prayed for peace in Syria and for the protection of our community and
innocent civilians.
At the conclusion of Divine Liturgy the Prelate conducted the
blessing of water, with Alan Hamparchian serving as Godfather of the Cross.
The water was distributed to the faithful to take to their homes and loved
ones.
On Tuesday, January 7, memorial day was observed with requiem
service and the blessing of the four corners of the world service at Forest
Lawn Hollywood Hills and Glendale. The Prelate presided over the service at
the Hollywood Hills location.

and humility that we are to follow.
At the conclusion of Divine Liturgy Holy Communion was offered,
after which the Jrakalooyts service began. Faithful lit their candles from
the flame of a candle brought from the holy altar as the Church echoed with

Homenetmen has announced a partnership with Google

Working smarter and not harder, through Google Apps

LOS ANGELES-On Jan. 1, Homenetmen announced the first ever
Google-backed initiative by an Armenian non-profit organization
by signing a Google Volunteer Assistance Agreement. This project
will provide Homenetmen a suite of tools that will improve its
operational efficiency. Google will provide coaching for Homenetmen
for a successful rollout. The project will begin on January 7, 2014
and the training will last for 3 months.

The Homenetmen USA Western and Eastern Regions will be the initial
hubs for this project. The Armenian General Athletic Union and Scouts,
referred to as Homenetmen, is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization with
over 25,000 members worldwide in five continents. Homenetmen currently
has 104 Chapters of which 18 chapters, with over 6,800 members, are
in the Western USA Region and 10 chapters, with over 2,000 members,
are in the Eastern USA Region.

“As a complex global organization we need to help our staff and our
large network of volunteers to work together more effectively and
track progress on programs and projects in multiple countries and
chapters. With Google Apps, our organization will work smarter, not
harder,” said Karnig Megerdichian, Chairman of the Homenetmen Central
Executive Board. “Our member database is not in scope; Google will
not touch, store, or edit the member database. The Google tools are a
productivity suite to help Homenetmen work more efficiently. We are
not storing any Homenetmen member information on Google’s servers,”
he added.

In Sept 2011 Homenetmen’s General Assembly Meeting formally
announced its strategic planning process. Among many aspects of its
strategic planning are process automation and business intelligence
improvements. Google will be providing a suite of tools to help
Homenetmen achieve the above goals.

“Besides internal operational efficiencies, with the help of Google
Apps we will engage our supporters on our new website and will
determine our most effective communication ads through AdWords. We
will also use Google Analytics to monitor and track the effectiveness
of social media” noted Viggen Davidian, the Central Board strategic
planning liaison.

Currently five million businesses pay $50 per user per year in
order to use Google Apps for their businesses. Google is not only
providing the Apps to Homenetmen for free, but is providing three of
its employees to spend up to 8 hours per week coaching Homenetmen,
for over 12 weeks. “Google will conduct workflow shadowing and train
100 Homenetmen staff and officers on core Google Apps across various
Homenetmen chapters and will also provide one-on-one extensive
coaching on additional Google tools (AdWords, Analytics, YouTube)
for three Homenetmen IT specialists” added Vicken Apelian, Homenetmen
Central IT Committee Chair.

“This relationship will have a transformational impact and is a
key process for Homenetmen’s culture change from a pure volunteer
organization into an efficiently managed global organization,” said
Armen Abrahamian, the Chairman of the Homenetmen Strategic Planning
Committee.

Homenetmen is an organization with global reach. Founded in 1918,
its mission is to prepare exemplary citizens by providing physical
and health education through sports and scouting.

Kurdish Woman Militant Makes Anti-Armenian Statement

KURDISH WOMAN MILITANT MAKES ANTI-ARMENIAN STATEMENT

January 09, 2014 | 15:09

Kurdistan Communities Union (KCK) Executive Council Co-President Bese
Hozat made a statement that sows enmity toward Armenians and Greeks,
and this statement surprised the Armenians of Turkey.

In an interview with the Kurdish Firat news agency, and speaking
about the parallel state which Islamic opinion leader Fethullah
Gulen’s movement has established in Turkey, Hozat also reflected on
the Armenians, Greeks, and Jews.

She noted that, aside from the official state, there also are parallel
states in Turkey.

“The Jewish lobby, the nationalist Armenians and Greeks are such
parallel states. Such parallel states are in touch with one another
and have interests from each other.

“Parallel states do not have formal and constitutional rights. It
seems they do not have troops either, but they have an organized and
a strong structure,” the Kurdish woman militant said.

Bese Hozat also claimed that these parallel states hinder the
establishment of democracy in Turkey.

Nearly 1.5 Million Armenians Have Deposits Amounting To $1-1.5 Billi

NEARLY 1.5 MILLION ARMENIANS HAVE DEPOSITS AMOUNTING TO $1-1.5 BILLION

January 09, 2014 | 12:58

YEREVAN. – Nearly 1.5 million Armenians have bank deposits amounting
to $1- 1.5 billion, sociologist Aharon Adibekyan said during the
Thursday press conference.

He believes that after introduction of a cumulative pension system,
this amount will increase.

“We are gradually going to a market democracy. It becomes unnecessary
that our tables were traditional,” Adbekyan said.

Sociologist also expressed surprise at the fact that environmentalists
have not raised protest against imports of smoked crocodiles. Now
the country is in a state of post-holiday stress.

“The main reason for this is the uncertainty for all, as it is unknown
how the things will go. This is what throws us into a panic. Another
cause of stress is the fact that about half of Armenian families have
spent their savings to New Year celebrations,” he added.
