LE PARTI AU POUVOIR CONFIANT DANS SON AVENIR ELECTORAL

POLITIQUE

Apple’s Armenian Keyboard Becomes Free For All

APPLE’S ARMENIAN KEYBOARD BECOMES FREE FOR ALL

YEREVAN, September 29. / ARKA /. Armenian education and science
minister Armen Ashotyan reported today through his Facebook page that
Armenian-language keyboard on Apple devices has become free.

Back in early 2013 Ashotyan used Facebook to ask Apple CEO Tim Cook
to develop Armenian keyboard for the iPad.

Ashotyan wrote that Apple’s mobile devices were becoming very
widespread in Armenia both among Armenians in Armenia proper and those
living in other countries, however, the iPad, used by teachers and
students did not enable them to work and communicate in the Armenian
language, because the operating system lacked Armenian keyboard.

According to Ashotyan, the ministry of education and science held
talks with the developers of the Apple’s first Armenian keyboard to
make it free.

“I want to announce that HayTar (Armenian letters) application is
now free for all users, “Ashotyan wrote in his page.

The minister said that from now on Armenian users may enjoy
communication in the network in their language. He also stressed that
not a penny was used to advance this initiative.

HayTar application was created specifically by Armenian developers
for Apple’s operating systems.

As for Android operating system it provides a free ability to write
texts in the Armenian language. -0–

MFA Mum On Future Of Turkey-Armenia Protocols After Sargsyan’s Remar

MFA MUM ON FUTURE OF TURKEY-ARMENIA PROTOCOLS AFTER SARGSYAN’S REMARKS AT UN

NEWS | 30.09.14 | 10:31

Official Yerevan does not make further comments regarding the possible
withdrawal of the Turkey-Armenia protocols from the National Assembly
following President Serzh Sargsyan’s allowing such a possibility in
his speech at the United Nations.

Addressing the 69th session of the UN General Assembly in New York on
September 24, Sargsyan said that “official Yerevan is seriously
considering the issue of recalling the Armenian-Turkish Protocols from
the parliament.”

“Armenia has never conditioned the normalization of the bilateral
relations with Turkey by recognition of the Armenian Genocide. In
fact, Armenia was the party that initiated such a process which
culminated in the signing of the Zurich Protocols in 2009. However,
those Protocols have been shelved for years now awaiting ratification
in the Turkish Parliament,” the Armenian leader declared.

“Ankara declares publicly that it will ratify those Protocols only if
Armenians cede Nagorno- Karabakh, independent Artsakh, to Azerbaijan.

In Armenia and Artsakh ordinary people often just retort to such
preconditions: “To hell with you ratification.” This vernacular phrase
concentrates the age-old struggle of the entire nation, and it
unequivocally explains to those who attempt to bargain the others’
homeland that the motherland is sacrosanct, and they had better stay
away from us with their bargain. It is in these circumstances that
currently the official Yerevan is seriously considering the issue of
recalling the Armenian-Turkish Protocols from the parliament,”
Sargsyan added.

During a joint press conference with the visiting UNDP Administrator,
Under-Secretary-General Helen Clark in Yerevan, on Monday, in the
context of President Sargsyan’s remarks at the UN, Armenian Foreign
Minister Edward Nalbandian was asked whether there were approximate
dates for the recalling of the Turkey-Armenia protocols from the
Parliament.

“If there was such a decision, the President of the Republic would
probably say about it. But the President said what he said and as of
now I have nothing to add,” the top Armenian diplomat said.

Ed. Sharmazanov didn’t want to comment on the appointment of Surik Khachatryan

16:20 | September 27,2014 | Politics

The NA vice President Eduard Sharmazanov is not going to discuss the
personnel decisions of the Government and in particular, why Surik
Khachatryan was reappointed Syunik Governor.

He thinks that the work of all the governors must be under control,
and whether Surik Khachatryan’s issue was discussed at the HHK council
session, he doesn’t know as he wasn’t in the country. The observation,
that Surik Khachatryan’s name is connected with criminal cases and in
particular with the murder of Avetik Budaghyan, Mr. Sharmazanov
answered, “Ask the courts all the questions on the criminal cases. I
am not a lawyer or advocate, or prosecutor. The court, as I know,
didn’t give an accusatory verdict. Of course there may be different
perceptions in the society, that’s why I said that I am not going to
discuss the personnel decisions of the Government.”

Nebraska to host international conference on Armenian Genocide

Nebraska to host international conference on Armenian Genocide

Bedross Der Matossian interviewed on centennial and beyond.

LINCOLN – On the occasion of the Centennial of the Armenian Genocide,
the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) is hosting a two-day
conference on March 19-20, 2015, entitled “Crossing the Centennial:
The Historiography of the Armenian Genocide Re-Evaluated” that will
examine the latest developments in the historiography of the Armenian
Genocide.

The conference, organized by Prof. Bedross Der Matossian from the
Department of History at UNL, is co-sponsored by the Harris Center for
Judaic Studies, the National Association of Armenian Studies and
Research (NAASR) in Belmont, MA, and the Society for Armenian Studies
(SAS) in cooperation with the Department of History, the Human Rights
and Humanitarian Affairs Program, and the Institute of Ethnic Studies
at UNL.

Twenty-two scholars from Armenia, Cambodia, Canada, Holland, Hungary,
Israel and the United States representing 17 different academic
institutions are going to take part in the conference. Some of the
participants include, Hilmar Kaiser, Stefan Ihrig, Benny Morris,
Joceline Chabot, Richard Hovannisian, Michelle Tusan, and Keith
Watenpaugh.

The conference will focus on four themes that had been previously
under-researched but which in recent years have gained more scholarly
attention and analytical depth. These themes are Humanitarianism and
Humanitarian Intervention in the Armenian Genocide, Women and Children
in the Armenian Genocide, Comparative Dimensions of the Armenian
Genocide, and the Impact of the Armenian Genocide. Specific papers
focus on Armenian property issues in French Mandated Cilicia
(1918-23), gendered violence and Genocide’s opponents inside the
Ottoman Empire.

“In the past couple of years there has been substantial interest with
the Armenian Genocide in Academia,” Der Matossian told the Armenian
Reporter. “As we are approaching the centennial many academic
conferences are being organized across the United States. In terms of
publications, university presses are also interested to publish new
work on the Armenian Genocide. We will see new books by such scholars
as Ronald Grigor Suny, Benny Morris and Dror Zeevi, Stefan Ihrig, and
Michelle Tusan.

“What is unique about the UNL conference is that it is organized
mostly by the efforts of Harris Center for Judiac studies with the
co-sponsorship of NAASR and SAS,” Der Matossian continued. “We do not
have an Armenian chair, nor an Armenian program here but the interest
about the Armenian genocide is increasing. I myself teach a seminar on
Crimes Against Humanity at the History Department in which we
concentrate a lot on the Armenian Genocide along with the other
genocides of the 20th century.”

When asked if he thinks this interest in the Armenian Genocide studies
will continue post-centennial, Der Matossian responded: “Of course the
Anniversary is an important occasion to commemorate the Armenian
Genocide. And I think that all Armenians are working hard towards that
goal both on the academic and political fronts.

“I am a bit concerned that the international interest might taper off
after the centennial. The current turmoil in the Middle East and the
significant role that Turkey plays in the region will discourage some
major countries to tackle with the issue. Though the political
dimension of the Armenian genocide is important, I think that
concentrating on academia is equally important. As an educator I would
like to see that the Armenian Genocide be taught at different
universities here in the U.S. I would like to see that more young
scholars get involved in researching the Armenian Genocide not only
from the perspective of Armenian history, but in the context of global
waves of mass violence that inflicted societies in the 20th centuries.
More support needs to be given to scholars who do research on the
Armenian Genocide, regardless of their background.

“From the perspective of a historian the centennial is just three
numbers: one and two zeros. For me personally nothing is going to
change. Armenians will continue with their recognition efforts. The
debates in Turkey about the Armenian Genocide will continue and
hopefully it would not only be limited to a couple of universities and
a tight circle of leftist intellectuals in Istanbul writing for Taraf
or Radikal.

The regional situation in the Middle East will dictate the future with
regard to the attitude of different regional or global powers to the
Armenian Genocide. We might even see more morally bankrupt
authoritarian regimes in the Middle East “recognizing” the Armenian
genocide which itself is an insult to the memory of the victims.

“In one sentence things will continue to be the same as they were
during the 99th anniversary,” Der Matossian concluded.

Bedross Der Matossian is Assistant Professor of History at University
of Nebraska-Lincoln. He is the author of Shattered Dreams of
Revolution: From Liberty to Violence in the Late Ottoman Period
(Stanford, California : Stanford University Press, 2014).

Ervand Kochar exhibition opens at Cafesjian

Ervand Kochar exhibition opens at Cafesjian

Published: Saturday September 27, 2014

Rebellion by Kochar.

YEREVAN – The Cafesjian Center for the Arts (CCA) announces the
opening of a landmark exhibition Kochar: Challenging the Time
dedicated to the 115th birthday anniversary of the Armenian celebrated
artist Ervand Kochar.

Organized in partnership with the Ervand Kochar Museum as part of
CCA’s Museum Networking program, the exhibition brings together a
brilliant selection of works, including masterpieces from Kochar’s
Paris and Yerevan periods.

Featuring thirty works from the Ervand Kochar Museum and private
collections, Kochar: Challenging the Time offers a unique opportunity
to experience the development of Kochar’s ideological and aesthetic
world through paintings, graphic works, sculptures and his
groundbreaking form of plastic art “Painting in Space”. The exhibition
focuses on Kochar’s evolving artistic vision, demonstrating how the
artist’s imagery went through a constant process of metamorphosis.

Arriving in Paris in 1923 at the age of 24, from the very first
months, Kochar firmly launched his career in the complex and
attractive artistic environment of the city, exhibiting together with
the leading artists of the era. Within a short period of time his art
was regarded as “deeply cognitive and unmatched in terms of
execution”, “innovative”, “avant-garde and the most audacious”. His
return to Yerevan in 1936 was a dramatic breakthrough for the artist’s
life and creative development, as in a totalitarian regime Kochar’s
progressive and innovative art was regarded as “anti-Soviet and
anti-revolutionary”. However, Kochar’s genius asserted itself in a new
manifestation of expression, reflected in a gesture of liberation of
his national identity. Kochar, who in his native land became the
symbol of avant-garde art, the new and freedom, reestablished the
spirit of national identity and struggle, animated in his monumental
sculptures Davit of Sassoun and Vardan Mamikonyan. Kochar’s work
challenged the ideals of his epoch expressed in a new vision of
freedom of time and space.

The exhibition Kochar: Challenging the Time is yet another step to
disclose Kochar’s creative genius as one of the greatest artists of
the 20th century of modern art.

The exhibition will last till December 14, 2014. The admission is free.

Sculpture Garden educational program

introduced their selected works with pantomime. As a gesture of
acknowledgment the families gifted each other their created works.

“As a socially responsible operator, Beeline continuously implements
programs that make life better. I believe that in the scope of this
program together with the Cafesjian Center for the Arts we will be

children but also to their parents, making this summer unforgettable
and interesting.” – stated Tatev Ayrumyan, Public Relations Manager of
Beeline Armenia.

“Summer Sculpture Garden gives a new creative stimulus to program
participants, who not only get better acquainted with the selected
artists and their artworks, but also have an opportunity to reproduce,
introduce and gift their unique reproductions to fellow participant
families. We thank Beeline for its continuous support to our
educational programs” – stated Mr. Vahagn Marabyan, the Acting

PanARMENIAN.Net – The President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the
Council of Europe (PACE) Anne Brasseur refuted Azerbaijani media
reports claiming that during the press conference in Baku she proposed
to “hold meeting of Azerbaijani and Armenian communities of Nagorno
Karabakh in Baku despite Armenia’s non-constructive position.”

According to Panorama.am, a representative of the PACE President’s
office said that the “Assembly should not interfere in the activities
of the OSCE Minsk Group, but can help the parliamentary delegations of
Azerbaijan and Armenia build confidence and develop dialogue.”

However, the press release “summarizing the conclusions of Brasseur’s
visit to Azerbaijan” didn’t contain a word about a meeting “between
the Armenian and Azeri communities of Nagorno Karabakh.”

Hristea: EU is definitely interested in Armenian goods

21:10, 26.09.2014

YEREVAN. – EU Ambassador does not think that at the moment we need to
speak about the influence of restrictive measures imposed against
Russia on Armenia’s economy.

Ambassador Trian Hristea said EU is definitely interested in Armenian
goods, and this is due to this interest that EU created such
mechanisms as GSP+ that are contributing to development of trade and
economic relations between Armenia and EU.

Asked about this year’s reduction in Armenia’s exports by 4.9 percent,
the EU diplomat said it is normal to have fluctuations from month to
month, year to year. “I will refrain at this stage to make assessment
based on that figure. The most important thing for now is that Armenia
should make use of instruments proposed by EU. And may be to come back
to analysis of percentage when we have picture of real trends,” he
said after the opening of the third training of EU in Armenia club.
