Depuis 1915, l’histoire de l’Armenie et des Armeniens est devenue
indissociable de la memoire. Celle-ci a refonde l’identite armenienne
en diaspora. Près de cent ans après le genocide, le Centre national du
livre a demande a des historiens, des essayistes et des journalistes
de faire le point a travers differents prismes sur le rôle et le
destin de la diaspora armenienne.

Qu’en est-il, aujourd’hui, de l’Armenie et des Armeniens, de leur
perseverance a travers les siècles et de leur dispersion a travers
les continents ? Qu’en est-il, aujourd’hui, de l’armenite qui renvoie
a un peuple, a une langue, a une culture, a une foi, a une terre,
a des migrations, a une litterature et a des arts ? Comment se sont
faites les differentes reconstructions après l’abîme de 1915 ?

Le Centre national du livre accueille aujourd’hui Peter Balakian,
Krikor Beledian et Marc Nichanian, pour une table ronde evoquant
ces questions.

US ANALYST: AZERBAIJAN SHOULD HAVE AN EXCELLENT CHANCE TO REPRESENT ITSELF IN THE SECURITY COUNCIL

“Azerbaijan should have an excellent chance to represent itself in
the Security Council”, Thomas Ambrosio, US analyst on South Caucasus
issues, an Associate Professor of political science at the North
Dakota State University, said in an interview with APA’s Washington,
DC correspondent.

He believes, Azerbaijan’s chances seem pretty good, with Moscow
backing Azerbaijan’s candidacy.

“Armenian-American organizations appear to be fighting it and it will
be interesting what Washington does”, he mentioned.

According to the analyst, assuming one of the rotating seats in the
UN Security Council is more important symbolically than politically.

“In reality, most decisions by the UN SC are taken by the five
permanent members and then presented to the 10 rotating members.

Nonetheless, the prominence of the body can only help to enhance the
prominence of Azerbaijan on the world stage”, he said, adding, it may
also have a more substantive benefit for Azerbaijan: “Sitting on the
Security Council may allow Baku to help set the agenda of the Security
Council and place the Nagorno-Karabakh issue on the world’s agenda”.

Yerevan /Mediamax/. Armenian Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan stated
today that the treaty on establishing a free economic zone between
CIS member countries creates “a unique opportunity” for the economy
and business subjects of Armenia.

“First of all, we’ll have an opportunity to trade with the CIS
countries to have signed the treaty without any customs”, stated
the PM.

According to him, joint rules of licensing and coding are currently
being worked out as well and none of the countries will consequently
be able to set unilateral restrictions for business subjects of the
other countries.

Tigran Sargsyan noted that the document will contribute to the
improvement of Armenian economic regime as the number of existing
restrictions reflected in the bilateral treaties signed before will
decrease to almost 600.

KEVORKIAN’S ESTATE, MASS. MUSEUM FEUD OVER ARTWORK

BOSTON (AP) – The Massachusetts-based Armenian Library and Museum
of America is refusing to surrender 17 paintings by assisted-suicide
advocate Dr. Jack Kevorkian.

The paintings were among 140 of Kevorkian’s personal effects set for
auction by his estate next week in New York City.

Kevorkian was of Armenian descent. He died in June in suburban Detroit.

The Watertown museum has sued the Kevorkian estate’s attorney in
Middlesex County Court, arguing Kevorkian and his sister publicly
declared he had donated the works to it.

But Birmingham, Mich., attorney Mayer Morganroth on Wednesday said
the claims are “absurd” because neither he nor Kevorkian signed any
document donating the paintings. He says he’s filed a motion to move
the lawsuit to federal court.

The museum says it’ll keep the Kevorkian paintings until the matter
is resolved.

CRUSHING AND SCREENING SYSTEM IN SOTK MINE IN ARMENIA OPERATES IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE LEGISLATION – “GEOPROMINING GOLD”

YEREVAN, October 19. /ARKA/. Crushing and screening system in Sotk
mine is already installed and is operating in accordance with the
requirements of Armenian legislation, the company’s department for
press and public relations told ARKA News Agency.

Armenian ecologists organized an action of protest near the President’s
Office on Wednesday in Armenia, announcing about illegality of
installation of crushing and screening system in Sotk mine located
near Lake Sevan by the company GeoProMining Gold.

The company informs that according to the regulation of Armenian law
“ïn examination of the impact on the environment”, in the mining
industry expertise will envisage the following activities: ore mining
and ore processing.

“Under the current draft, LLC GeoProMining Gold implements ore mining
works in Sotk mine. Installation of crushing equipment in the section
gabbro (part of the mine) of Sotk mine is not a separate kind of
planned activity, which is subject to a separate examination of impact
on the environment, and is one of the processes of ore mining works”,
states the press-release.

The company also noted that fragmentation of rocks and mines is
envisaged by the project and the need for destruction and shredding
the mountain massif with the purpose of further shipping and is
applied from the beginning of the mine development.

According to the Armenian law “On the provision of (Concession) subsoil
for study and industrial production aiming at exploitation of mineral
resources” “then: the law “On Concession”), special license for mining
gives the licensor an exclusive right for implementation of extraction
of minerals, and LLC GeoProMining Gold has a license for Sotk mine.

In particular, the licensor has a right of access to the site of the
subsoil and implementation of all necessary works envisaged by the
project required for industrial production and study of minerals,
construction works for the implementation of mining production of
necessary buildings, facilities, communication lines, installation
of equipment, transportation, mine processing, extracted in mining
production and disposal of extracted minerals.

In April 2011 at the request of the Government of Armenia, Ministry of
Energy and Natural Resources has formed a commission were transferred
to Gavar Aarhus center.

GPM GOLD is developing Sotk gold mine and owns Ararat gold recovery
plant .It is part of Russian GeoProMining group of companies.

GeoProMining acquired 100% of Sterlite Gold Ltd from international
Vedanta Resources in 2007 September. Sterlite Gold Ltd was the only
owner of AGRC that was later renamed GPM GOLD.

TURKISH MAYOR CAN’T RECEIVE TREATMENT ABROAD OVER TRAVEL BAN

PanARMENIAN.Net – The mayor of Sur Municipality in the eastern province
of Diyarbakýr is suffering from a serious disease and was advised by
doctors to receive medical care abroad. But Sur Mayor Abdullah Demirbaþ
is not allowed to leave Turkey due to the Kurdish Communities Union
(KCK) case, Hurriyet Daily News reported.

Demirbaþ, who is very popular for multilingual municipal services, is
on trial in the case against the alleged urban wing of the outlawed
Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). He was arrested Dec. 24, 2009 and
convicted due to the accusations. His previous illness has worsened
because of prison conditions.

After Dicle University Medical Faculty released a report saying,
“Abdullah Demirbaþ has critical conditions,” the court released him
pending trial on April 5, 2010.

Istanbul University Medical Hospital, Capa Medical Faculty and
Diyarbakýr Training and Research Hospital diagnosed his disease as
“hereditary vein thrombosis” and warned that without treatment, it
could grow worse every day. The universities suggested that Demirbaþ
should receive treatment abroad, but he cannot seek treatment because
of his travel ban.

“I have applied to the court four times, but our applications have
been denied regarding the suspicion of attempt to escape. In order
to suspend the travel ban, President Abdullah Gul or Prime Minister
Recep Tayyip Erdoðan or Minister of Justice Sadullah Ergin could use
initiative for this case,” Demirbaþ told the Hurriyet Daily News on
Oct. 17.

The mayor also noted that the court might decide in his favor.

A new campaign called “Freedom to Demirbaþ” has been launched on
social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook urging officials to
lift the ban. The mayor said the social media campaign has been very
successful so far.

“The head of the local administration of the Council of Europe and
the head of Turkish Parliament’s Human Rights Commission called me
on the issue,” Demirbaþ said.

MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING SIGNED BETWEEN VIVACELL-MTS AND FOUR ARMENIAN EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS

Touching on the settlement of Nagorno Karabakh conflict, French
leader said that his country was near Armenia in the settlement of
Nagorno Karabakh conflict through negotiations: “Be sure that France
unfalteringly stands by your side to conquer the challenges that your
country faces first of all, on the road toward the resolution of the
Nagorno Karabakh conflict through negotiations”.

Sarkozy especially touched on his visit to the so-called “Armenian
genocide” monument in Armenia: “My state visit first and foremost

STATUS QUO IN KARABAKH CANNOT CONTINUE FOR LONG TIME – US OFFICIAL

BAKU. – U.S. as a mediator in Karabakh peace process within the
framework of the OSCE Minsk Group is ready to continue steps aimed
at peaceful resolution of the conflict, US Deputy Secretary of State
William Burns told journalists in Baku.

“The U.S. is loyal to do best for strengthening and renewal the process
carried out by OSCE Minsk Group at the highest level – presidential
level,” APA news agency quotes the official.

He also stressed that there is no military solution to the conflict
adding that the existing status quo cannot continue for a long time.

“That’s why the U.S. approaches to this issue as an urgent case,”
he added.

Burns stressed that the Karabakh conflict was one of the key topics
discussed during his meeting with Azerbaijani leader.

SCHOOL DAMAGED BY RECENT EARTHQUAKE IN ARMENIAN GARNI

GARNI. – Walls of the school were damaged as a result of the recent
earthquake occurred in Garni village of Armenian Kotayk Region.

As a result of the earthquake, the ceiling of the first floor of
school Fantan village was cracked as well, Armenian Ministry of
Emergency Situations informed on Monday. Administration of the region
is informed of the incident.

The earthquake measuring 3.5 magnitude occurred 10 km to west from
Garni village on October 14.
