TALKING GREEN: PM TELLS DIASPORA ENVIRONMENTALISTS HIS GOVERNMENT HEARS THEIR CONCERNS
By Gohar Abrahamyan

The Armenian prime minister said during his Monday meeting with
Armenian-American environmental activists in the United States that
he is “ready to discuss the issues they are concerned about and find
solutions that would satisfy them”. Armenia-based environmentalists,
however, are not excited by this promise neither are they optimistic
about it.

Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan, who is in the US on a working visit,
on Monday visited the Western Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church,
where environmental activists were rallying and shared their concerns
with the premier over the exploitation of mines in Armenia.

Seeing the protest, the head of the government approached the
activists who were America-based members of Civil Initiative for Teghut
Protection. Sargsyan said that the green movement is yielding results
in Armenia and that the state structures take into consideration the
opinions voiced by the movement.

“We are following your movement with great attention, are aware of your
concerns, moreover, we have numerous meetings with its representatives
and the government is assisting that movement of yours. I am convinced
that this dialogue is beneficial to our people, our state,” he said.

For the past few years various green organizations and activists have
been raising serious environmental issues Armenia is challenged with,
in particular related to the development of mining industry and the
potential damage it might cause nature.

According to data by Healthcare Services Research and Development
Center, there are 670 mines in Armenia – 400 among them are functional
and 30 are iron ore mines, and 15 tailings dams.

President of Ecolur NGO Inga Zarafyan told ArmeniaNow that they have
repeatedly submitted suggestions on these issues to the current
premier, the cabinet members in general and even turned to the
president of Armenia, but no essential solutions have been found.

“The situation in Armenia today is extremely dangerous, only during
the first week of December numerous new mining projects have been
submitted that the public is unaware of,” says Zarafyan adding that
if anything is to change it can be only be achieved by public pressure.

Conspicuous Consumption: Armenians Lining Up For New Years Loans

CONSPICUOUS CONSUMPTION: ARMENIANS LINING UP FOR NEW YEARS LOANS
Grisha Balasanyan

11:53, December 11, 2012

For the past month, long lines have been forming outside banks and
credit unions located in the regions outside ofYerevan.

You’d think they’re giving away free money or something.

But that’s not it. You see, the holidays are around the corner and
people are in need of loans in order to celebrate in traditional
Armenian style; i.e., tables sagging under the weight of trays of
food and drink.

Now, the banks and credit unions won’t loan money for such personal
expenses so residents have to apply for agricultural loans.

One woman from the Amberd village in Armavir told me that she has
been taking out “holiday” loans for the past three years under such
conditions. She uses the family cache of gold as collateral.

The woman confesses that her husband is too ashamed to show his face
at the bank anymore.

“I have three young children at home. New Year’s has become a time
for begging. Last year, my ten year-old son never left his bed. He
was embarrassed when his friends cam over the house. Our holiday
table wasn’t all that presentable.”

The village woman was already thinking about how she would pay back
the 300,000 AMD loan.

“After getting the loan, I’ll enter the house with a smile on my face
in order to make the kids happy. But what’s going on in my heart,
only I know,” says the tearful woman as she gets in line at the bank.

Amberd Mayor Manvel Babayan says that 90% of the village is in debt.

“I can’t say whether people take out loans to celebrate New Years or
for some other reason. But the vast majority has applied for loans.”

Stats from the Central Bank also point to an increase in loans come
the holidays.

>>From November 5-11, banks in Armenia allocated some 27.7 billion
AMD ($41.3 million) in loans. During the following week that amount
increased to 31.1 billion AMD ($36.4 million).

>>From November 19-25, loans inched up to 31.3 billion AMD ($43.2
million). The amount shot up to 41.8 billion AMD ($68.5 million)
during November 26 to December 2).

In the conditions of unemployment, homelessness and poverty dominating
in Gyumri, the situation of single mothers having small children is
more complicated.

According to Shirak Center NGO press service, the organization
continues visiting the people and providing assistance sent by
American-based philanthropist Elvis Madatyan.

The NGO’s observations show that the single mothers earn for living
by working in the houses of different people, even keeping animals
in remote villages.

In the regular video single mother-of-two Zoya Simonyan is telling

Military Expert: Mistakes Committed By Individual Military Officials

MILITARY EXPERT: MISTAKES COMMITTED BY INDIVIDUAL MILITARY OFFICIALS MUST NOT BE USED AS A PRETEXT FOR GENERAL CRITICISM OF THE ARMY

arminfo
Tuesday, December 11, 14:14

Mistakes committed by individual military officials must not be used
as a pretext for general criticism of the army, military expert David
Jamalyan told journalists on Tuesday.

Jamalyan meant the recent scandals in the army, one of them concerning
buffalo meat supplies to some military units and resulting in the
dismissal of Deputy Chief of the General Staff Arshaluys Paityan.

“At the same time we must not forget that we also have healthy forces
and personalities, who are committed to improve the image of the army.

Each incident happening in the army requires a deep and unbiased
inquiry. We do need criticism but it must not be turned into anti-army
hysteria,” Jamalyan said.

New York’s Christian Leaders Hosted In Armenian Cathedral

NEW YORK’S CHRISTIAN LEADERS HOSTED IN ARMENIAN CATHEDRAL

Published: Tuesday December 11, 2012

Participants in the ecumenical gathering at St. Vartan.

NEW YORK – Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, Primate of the Diocese of the
Armenian Church of America (Eastern), hosted an ecumenical gathering at
the Diocesan Center in honor of the elevation of Archbishop Timothy
Dolan, the Roman Catholic Archbishop of New York, to the rank of
Cardinal.

Leaders of the Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and Oriental Orthodox
churches came together at St. Vartan Armenian Cathedral on November 30
for a prayer service, followed by a reception to honor Cardinal Dolan.

Also attending the afternoon gathering was Rabbi Arthur Schneier,
the Founder and President of the Appeal of Conscience Foundation.

“To our dear brother, Cardinal Dolan, I want to say, as I have said
before, that I hope you will always consider this Diocesan Center
as your home-as it is a home for all of us gathered here today,”
Archbishop Barsamian said in welcoming remarks. “And in feeling at
home here, I pray that we also feel part of the same family: bound
together by shared hopes-both temporal and eternal; a shared mission;
and a shared sense of gratitude for God’s blessings.”

Archbishop Barsamian also welcomed Metropolitan Tikhon, the Primate
of the Orthodox Church in America and Metropolitan of All America
and Canada, who was elected to this position on November 13.

Cardinal Edward Egan, the former Roman Catholic Archbishop of New
York, delivered the invocation. He thanked Archbishop Barsamian for
organizing the day’s program and congratulated Cardinal Dolan on his
elevation. Archbishop Dolan was elevated to the College of Cardinals
by Pope Benedict XVI in February 2012.

Cardinal Dolan expressed his gratitude to Archbishop Barsamian for
the warm reception, and recalled how in the fall of 2009 the Eastern
Diocese hosted a similar gathering to mark Dolan’s installation as the
10th Roman Catholic Archbishop of New York. “You have been a source
of hospitality and warmth from the beginning,” Cardinal Dolan said.

He said that it is important to maintain the bonds of friendship
shared by the various churches in New York, especially in a culture
that sometimes characterizes religion as a source of violence. “Now
more than ever we need the unity and fraternity that we have here in
New York,” he said, adding that together the churches can stand up
to injustice and seek peace.

Archbishop Demetrios, Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church in America,
spoke about the life of St. Andrew the Apostle, whose feast day was
observed on November 30. “This is a great day to celebrate,” he said,
adding, “We are glad to be with our beloved brothers on this occasion.”

He congratulated Cardinal Dolan on his elevation and commended his
tenacity and his readiness to defend the Christian faith. “It is
important that we have leaders with a determination to change the
world,” Archbishop Demetrios said.

Referring to the crises in the Middle East-including civil war in
Syria, and ongoing conflicts in Egypt, Lebanon, and Israel-he added
that ecumenical gatherings “increase our awareness of our need for
each other and our tremendous potential to work together.”

Metropolitan Mor Cyril Aphrem Karim, leader of the Syriac Orthodox
Church of the Eastern United States, remarked on Cardinal Dolan’s
many achievements in a short period and his commitment to serving
his flock. “At a time when faith has diminished in public quarters,
it is important to bring faith to the public sphere,” he said.

He also spoke of the suffering in Syria, and called on religious
leaders to pray and to advocate for peace in the region.

Rabbi Schneier reflected on the importance of living one’s faith
through good works. “You serve not only your church, but you serve
all of God’s children,” he said to Cardinal Dolan.

He went on to speak on the blessings of living in a land of freedom,
and stressed the need to fight for human rights in parts of the world
where freedoms are more precarious. “The United Nations has to take a
stand on the protection of Christian minorities in the Middle East,”
he said, adding that the world must not remain “silent in the face
of suffering.”

Metropolitan Tikhon presented Russian Orthodox icons to Cardinal Dolan
and to Archbishop Barsamian. “We offer you our prayers, and on behalf
of the Orthodox Church we look forward to working with you,” he said.

Archbishop Barsamian presented Cardinal Dolan with a mother-of-pearl
Bible, carved in Jerusalem. “Our beloved Archbishop of New York
represents the very best spirit of this great city: its cosmopolitan
outlook, its compassion for the poor and afflicted, its aspiration
to beauty, its appreciation for the everyday virtues of family and
community,” Archbishop Barsamian said. “As a New Yorker, Cardinal
Dolan is strongly committed to his own tradition; but also as a New
Yorker, he is a loving supporter-a cheerleader, even-of the many
noble traditions that have made this country strong, great, and good.”

At the conclusion of the afternoon meeting, Metropolitan Philip, the
Antioch Orthodox Church’s Archbishop of New York and Metropolitan of
All North America, delivered a benediction.

Also in attendance were Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio and Bishop William
Murphy of the Roman Catholic Archdioceses of Brooklyn and Long
Island, respectively; Archbishop Mor Titus Yeldho of the Syriac
Orthodox Church; Bishop Michael of the Orthodox Church in America;
and Bishop Nicholas of the Antiochian Orthodox Church. Fr. Moises
Bogdady represented Bishop David of the Coptic Orthodox Archdiocese
of North America; Fr. Kess Mahitama represented Archbishop Abune
Zekarias of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church; and Fr. Thomas Garabedian
represented Bishop Mikael Mouradian of the Armenian Catholic Eparchy
of the United States and Canada.

In addition to Archbishop Barsamian, representing the Eastern Diocese
at Friday’s event were Archbishop Vicken Aykazian, the Diocese’s
Ecumenical Director; Archbishop Yeghishe Gizirian; Very Rev. Fr.

Simeon Odabashian, Diocesan Vicar; Very Rev. Fr. Mamigon Kiledjian,
Dean of St. Vartan Armenian Cathedral; Very Rev. Fr. Daniel Findikyan,
Director of the Diocese’s Zohrab Center; and the Rev. Fr. Mardiros
Chevian, Dean of St. Nersess Armenian Seminary. Bishop Armash
Nalbandian, Primate of Damascus, who is visiting New York, also took
part in the gathering.

The club, which played seventeen games so far in the current season,
won its last nine matches and has a total of 33 points.

Der Zakarian’s team is unbeaten for the past two months.

Before FC Nantes, 49-year-old Michel Der Zakarian used to manage FC
