parlement, dix parlementaires coupables d’avoir parle.

Aram Harutyunyan Urges All Candidates To Withdraw From The President

ARAM HARUTYUNYAN URGES ALL CANDIDATES TO WITHDRAW FROM THE PRESIDENTIAL RACE
Sona Hakobyan

“Radiolur”
18:23 21.01.2013

President of the National Accord Party, presidential candidate Aram
Harutyunyan’s campaign will be mostly restricted to the free air time
provided by Public Television and the Public Radio of Armenia.

According to him, it’s not the election platform that will play a
role. It’s first of all necessary to have political will.

The minimum Aram Harutyunayan expects is to leave only Serzh Sargsyan’s
name on the ballot. The maximum expectation is the withdrawal of
Serzh Sargsyan from the race and the of new elections.

Aram Harutyunyan said he will withdraw from the competition 10 days
prior to the voting day and urges all others to follow his example.

Baku: Armenian Leadership Should See Psychiatrist – Turkish Mp

ARMENIAN LEADERSHIP SHOULD SEE PSYCHIATRIST – TURKISH MP

News.Az
Mon 21 January 2013 10:50 GMT | 10:50 Local Time

Armenian leadership should calm down and see a doctor – apparently
something is wrong with the psyche.

The statement came from Turkish MP from the ruling Justice and
Development Party, Mustafa Kabakci, commenting on Armenian President
Serzh Sargsyan’s statement in an interview with “Freedom” that
“Turkey’s reluctance to look into the eyes of history and at the same
time a manifestation of the pro-European ambitions cannot so easily
get away”.

“Rather than dealing with a century ago, the Armenian leadership should
look at their recent history. Crimes of Armenia against Azerbaijan
are a well-known fact. There are still living witnesses of Khojaly
genocide, they have something to say to Sargsyan, and I do not think
he will be able to respond,” said Kabakci.

“Turkey is a great country and Sargsyan should not even try to scare
us with his delusional statements. We have repeatedly stated that the
issue of the so-called “genocide” should be the subject of discussions
of historians, not politicians.

Armenian politicians and lobby by any means want to put this question
in the political sphere. Turkey has always stood against injustice
and is trying to deal with it, whether in the Caucasus, the Middle
East or elsewhere,” said Kabakci.

According to the declaration, he has only one immovable property: a
building and a structure of an area of 96 square meters in
Stepanakert.
As regards movable property, the incumbent president has a vehicle, a
Mitsubishi Montero.
In addition to immovable and movable property, Serzh Sargsyan declared
precious property worth over 8 million AMD.
Thus, it is said in the declaration that S. Sargsyan has antiques such
as sculptures, statuettes, etc. dated to the 18-20 centuries. He also
has a collection of paintings (by painters Khanjian, Sarian, Hakobian,
Gyurjian, Bashinjaghian, Minas, Y. Kochar, Kojoyan, and Abeghian), as
well as 32 paintings of contemporary painters.

Grimy Gatto (VI) Strikes Again

BY GAREN YEGPARIAN
A Blown Opportunity

January 12 marked the date of the California Democratic Party’s 43rd
Assembly District Election Meeting. At this and 79 similar meetings
held during that weekend, six men and six women were elected to
represent each of California’s assembly districts at state conventions
in 2013 and 2014. In addition, one executive board member was elected
from each district who will be more actively engaged in the party’s
ongoing affairs.

Over the last decade, Armenian participation in this biennial election
has increased, in large part due to the ANCA’s efforts. More Armenians
have gotten elected to office each time, working towards the day when
our community will be represented in proportion to its growing size
and participation in civic life within the borders of the 43rd
Assembly District, which includes Burbank, parts of the Crescenta
Valley, Glendale, and parts of Hollywood.

Seven of us from ANCA circles (yes, for full disclosure I was a
candidate to serve as a delegate from the 43rd) cooperated and worked
to turn out our friends to vote. There were other Armenian candidates
as well with whom some of us coordinated efforts at the last minute.
There were at least two other slates of candidates. The largest was a
full complement of twelve fielded by Assemblymember Mike Gatto. We
reached out to Gatto to cooperate but were rebuffed. This was yet
another effort to improve the strained relations between this elected
official and our community. It constitutes the missed opportunity on
Gatto’s part.

The matter referenced by the author

So far, so good, right? It all seems like normal, if not optimal,
behaviors in the context of an election. But beyond this, it gets
ugly.

Gatto’s minions had come prepared. His modus operandi is to always
attack viciously, and this time, I was a specific target. You can see
for yourself, in the accompanying picture, what they were
distributing. You can also see how misleading the whole attack is. The
handout refers to `good’ Democrats. But Mike Gatto is far from being
such a person. He has engaged in all kinds of shenanigans, as I’ve
chronicled, all very unbecoming of a Democrat.

Among those misbehaviors is subtle voter suppression (see `Solution
Seeking Problem’ in the November 19, 2011 Asbarez) , something his
cohort did again at this delegate election. Led by a top Gatto aide,
35 Armenians who had come to vote were `challenged’, i.e. their right
to vote questioned. You might think this is legitimate, especially
since a few of them turned out to be registered as `No party
preference’ and had evidently forgotten that status. But this course
of action takes on a decidedly more questionable hue when I am told
that one of those rejected, upon later verification, turns out to have
been a Democrat. That individual is planning to file a complaint with
the Democratic Party. It all becomes crystal-clear when one of the
people challenged by the aide turns out to be a board member of the
California Armenia American Democrats (CAAD), someone the aide knows
is serving in that position, especially since the aide is a member of
CAAD. The point of challenging so many people, it becomes obvious, is
not sincere concern, but intimidation and harassment, probably in the
hopes of discouraging them from voting. This is the disrespect with
which Gatto and his fellow travelers treat Armenians. Oh, and guess
what, on the Gatto slate, there was one Armenian, one of his
employees, no less. That’s one out of twelve, just over 8% in a
district that is well over 25% Armenian.

The day after the election, a posting appeared on a local (to the
district) blog known best for it’s being a front operation for Mike
Gatto. It vilifies, usually without grounds, people and groups who are
on Gatto’s enemies list. This posting denigrated the ANCA, likening
the organization to the Lyndon Larouche supporters within the
Democratic Party (a group that is looked upon with great disdain) and
effectively claiming the ANCA is anti-Semitic. It is obvious to me
that this was a `hit’ in response to the seven of us `daring’ to run
for the delegate positions against his candidates, since, of course,
we should all be sniveling underlings to his magnificence…

But it gets worse. On the same day, many people in the community
received an e-mail from Lori Adams, president of the Burbank Teachers
Association. This e-mail was addressed to Gatto, and revealed that
Gatto had threatened the leader of the slate she was on. As a result,
this person felt obliged to not attend the election. For a change, the
LATimes, (`Head of Burbank teachers union clashes with Assemblyman
Mike Gatto,’) along with its local affiliate, The Burbank Leader,
reported on Assemblymember Mike Gatto’s misdeeds, although only
on-line, and not in print, as of this writing. They have tended not to
expose his improprieties as thoroughly as they might.

Gatto’s slate won. But he’s probably concerned that he may not be able
to pull of the same feat in two years. Given his patterns of behavior,
including not reaching for the hand extended in cooperation in this
case as so many times in the past, he will probably continue to
antagonize his constituents instead of being decent and magnanimous in
victory; instead of being a leader; instead of working for the
betterment of the close to half a million people in the district he is
supposed to represent.

You might consider reaching out to Mike and telling him how
objectionable you find all this. Here’s his contact info:

`If you met Hrant Dink , what would you tell him?’. `Agos’ made a special video

15:17, 19 January, 2013

YEREVAN, JANUARY 19, ARMENPRESS: Armenian weekly published in
`Istanbul’ has made a video and published in the official web site of
`Agos’. `If you met Hrant Dink, what would you tell him?’ this is the
question of the video. As reports Armenpress, the video contains the
positions of Turkish citizens and their words addressed to Hrant Dink.
Armenpress reports a few of them.

`Already 6 years passed. The one who murdered you has been sentenced
but those who are the real responsible for your death have been
awarded’…

`You are me, I am you. What happened to you may happen with any of us.
All we the same.’

`Hrant, you are a great pain in our hearts. Losing you we felt us
orphans. I wouldn’t have changed with anything else just seeing you
for one more time.’

`Hrant, now I am thinking if then you used to live in your body, now
you are in the hearts of millions of people.’

`Dear Hrant, I know, you had your ideal. You dreamed of a Turkey full
of fraternity, equality and freedom. You are the symbol of
coexistence.’

`Will it be possible to live like brother Hrant?’

`We were silent before you. With you we started to speak about the
Genocide and we will even after you.’

Baku legalizes attacks on aircraft

Baku legalizes attacks on aircraft

2013-01-19 12:45:14

Azerbaijan’s cabinet on Friday issued document on use of airspace,
which allows official Baku to shoot down civilian aircraft deemed to
violate Azeri airspace, reported APA news agency.

The document, the use of which is obviously intended to thwart plans
to open the airport in Stepanakert, allow the government of Azerbaijan
to declare certain areas `banned zones and limited zones,’ hence
allowing the government to randomly shoot down aircraft it deems in
violation of Azeri airspace.

`If the aircraft does not obey orders to land and there is no exact
information about innocent passengers onboard, the legislation permits
the government to shoot down the aircraft,’ reported APA.

Armenia fired back by saying that its Air Force will ensure the safety
of Stepanakert Airport.

Armenia’s Defense Minister Seyran Ohanian told reporters Friday ‘The
Armenian Air Force will run the operation and flights of civil
aircraft,’ and will be ready to defend and ensure the safety of
flights.

Stepanakert airport was built in 1974 and was mostly used to
accommodate flights from Yerevan and Baku. In 1992 the airport ceased
operations. In 2008 work began on the construction of a new passenger
terminal resembling stretched wings of an eagle. In the course of this
period the runway was also expanded, by leveling several adjacent
hills and completely modernized the facility.

Since official Stepanakert’s announcement of its intention to open the
newly rebuilt Stepanakert airport, Baku has threatened to down
civilian planes. International mediators have urged a diplomatic
solution to the issue.

Baku’s cabinet decision Friday signals that Azerbaijan and its
authorities are unwilling to work under international norms and are
determined to cause harm to civilians at their random discretion.

On a lighter note, the Artsakh Public Television and the Voice of
Artsakh Musical Society have produced a skit, which was entirely shot
at the Stepanakert airport.

After airing the segment, the television station was flooded with
calls from viewers who wanted to know whether the airport has, in
fact, become operational.

Turkish official confesses to Armenian church being turned into mosque
four times

Culture and Tourism Director Hakan Doganay of Turkey’s Kars Province
informed that the latter’s Saint Arakelots (Apostles) Armenian Church,
which is at the focus of tourists, was turned into a mosque four times
all through history.

But not mentioning `Armenian’ or `Armenia,’ Doganay stressed that the
aforesaid church, which was built in 937 by the Armenian Bagratuni
Dynasty and devoted to the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ, is
currently used as a domed mosque, T24.com website of Turkey reports.

To note, there were rumors, after the last restoration at the church,
that it could become either a church or a museum. But, eventually, it
was turned into a mosque, even though there are engraved crosses and
the images of the apostles on the walls of the church.
