Serzh Sargsyan

YEREVAN, JANUARY 26, ARMENPRESS. The Azerbaijani authorities are full
of hatred towards the Armenians and they keep initiating provocations
on the border. As reports “Armenpress” presidential candidate Serzh
Sargsyan stated this during his visit to the Tavush Province on
January 26 in the frames of the election campaign.

Among other things Serzh Sargsyan noted: “Our soldiers are allocated
in a distance of few km from Ijevan taking care about the security of
our country and state.’

Notwithstanding the President recalled that 40 percent of the Tavush
Province communities are situated near the border and five of them are
right on the line of fire. Therefore the issue of raising the level of
security of the population is in the centre of watchful attention of
the authorities.

According to the presidential candidate the homeland strongly needs
the people of Tavush, who are stuck to the soil.

Beloved Armenian singers gave concert for the people of Ijevan.

The election campaign launched on January 21 and will last until
February 16. The deadline of submitting resignations to the Central
Electoral Commission of the Republic of Armenia is 18:00 o’clock,
February 8. The electronic votes will launch at 08:00 o’clock on
February 9 and last until 20:00 o’clock February 13. The votes will
kick off on February 18 at 08:00 and will last until 20:00 o’clock.

Turks’ enthusiasm about EU membership waning

January 26, 2013 – 13:32 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – Domestic support for Turkey’s European Union
membership is losing its momentum, as two thirds of Turks say they’ve
lost their appetite for the EU bid and believe Ankara should abandon
its pursuit of full membership, a recent study has shown, according to
Hurriyet Daily News.

The survey demonstrated that while one third of those surveyed agreed
Turkey should persevere with the goal of becoming an EU member,
two-thirds of the public lean closer to the view that Turkey should
not become a full member.

TNS-Turkey undertook the survey on behalf of the Center for Economy
and Foreign Policy Research (EDAM) with the participation of 1,509
people aged 18 and above whom represented a cross-section of the
country’s urban and rural populations.

Twenty percent of respondents support the idea that Turkey should
abandon its work toward a full membership and formulate a new
relationship with the EU based on common interests.

Nevertheless, over 50 percent of the public still view a partnership
with the EU in a positive.

MOSCOW. – Head of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR)
Vladimir Zhirinovsky stated about the threats, which hide in the
allegedly `peaceful NATO camps’ intended for the refugees in the
Turkish provinces located near the border with Syria.

He believes that the NATO camps in reality train people for civil war
under the motto of protecting the refugees.

`They train fighters under the claims of assisting refugees, which
will be used on the border close to Syria for shaking the Syrian
President Bashar al-Assad’s regime and cause tension,’ the LDPR
website quotes its leader.

The party leader also emphasized that installation of those camps in
Turkey may damage not only Damascus, but also later Istanbul as well.
One day, if the NATO and the U.S. desire, they may take the side of
the Kurds and the Armenians by blaming Turkey for pressing the Kurds
and raising the Armenian Question.

ISTANBUL. – There are no arrests so far in connection with the
attacks, ever since December 2012, against the elderly Armenian women
in Istanbul’s densely-Armenian-populated Samatya district. Istanbul’s
Agos Armenian weekly’s Armenian section editor Sarkis Seropyan told
this to Armenian News-NEWS.am.

He noted that they submitted inquiries to the law enforcement
agencies, and the latter’s investigation concluded that these
misdemeanors were not planned actions against Armenians, but rather
random cases of burglary. Seropyan added, however, that the majority
of the people have suspicions and concerns that these actions were
directed against the Armenians.

The Agos editor informed that, at present, the Armenians living in
Samatya district are concerned and the elderly are afraid to go out
alone. Also, he noted that the situation in Samatya is somewhat tense,
and the police are patrolling the district.

Sarkis Seropyan added that they will be unrelenting in this matter and
everything must be done to arrest the criminals.

YEREVAN. – According to the data that Hayatsk daily has, the
experienced elite of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA)
believes that RPA presidential candidate, incumbent President Serzh
Sargsyan has but two `headaches’ with respect to the forthcoming
presidential election.

`First: What to do so that the people turn out to vote? There is a
peril that, in the climate of widespread apathy, [solely] 20-25
percent of the voters will turn out.

[But] the second headache is more serious. Is it possible that,
according to tradition, the local princelings could again draw
[fictitious] numbers and Sargsyan’s votes exceed 80 percent, which
will be a disgrace?

In all likelihood, it will be `instructed’ at the last moment to make
sure that it [that is, the votes] does not exceed 65 percent. But, in
this case, how can votes be added for [opposition Heritage Party
Chairman, presidential candidate] Raffi [Hovannisian], [opposition
Freedom Party Chairman, presidential contender Hrant] Bagratyan, [and
opposition National Self-Determination Union Chairman, presidential
candidate Paruyr] Hayrikyan?

It is a complicated but a solvable matter,’ Hayatsk writes.
