Dermot Ahern’s Letter Regarding February 18 Election In Armenia

DERMOT AHERN’S LETTER REGARDING FEBRUARY 18 ELECTION IN ARMENIA

Dear Colleagues,

Attached find 2013 Armenian presidential election observer of OSCE
and former Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Ireland
Dermot Ahern’s letter to Armenian Bar Association Chairman Garo
Ghazarian regarding the fraud he witnessed during the February 18
election, particularly in Precinct 26/1, in which a landslide for
Raffi Hovannisian was converted into a victory for the incumbent.

Raffi Hovannisian Headquarters

Dear Garo Ghazarian, Chairman of the Armenian Bar Association

March 5, 2013

You might remember that we spoke at length on the plane from Yerevan
to Paris, just after the presidential election. I indicated to you
that I felt uneasy about what happened in the polling station and in
the TEC that I observed on the day of the election.

To recap, I and my German colleague Hedda Haars observed six polling
stations during the day and as instructed by the OSCE core team,
we finished observing the election in PEC 26/1 Yeghvard Elementary
School No 3. From what we saw, from 7 PM to the close at 8 PM,
everything was done correctly.

The presiding officer and team proceeded to count the votes. Again,
everything was done in accordance with the instructions. The presiding
officer showed to everyone, including ourselves, our interpreter,
our driver as well as a proxy on behalf of the incumbent, every vote
once he had taken it from the envelope.

Immediately, it transpired that Raffi was hovering up the votes. This
caused some surprise with the local participants. Indeed, it became
somewhat embarrassing in that virtually every vote was for Raffi.

Every odd time, a vote came out for the incumbent, there was a slight
laugh from some of the locals. On and on, it continued with Raffi
getting virtually all of the votes. The proxy for the incumbent was
tallying in a very methodical way and I could see clearly from his
tally that Raffi was way ahead. In fact, he actually ran out of paper,
Raffi got so many votes over the incumbent. At about 9:15 PM. I sent a
text to my principal to say that with 30 percent of the votes counted
Raffi was at least 3 to 1 ahead.

During this time and up until when we left, a number of invalid votes
were declared. For instance, one vote was declared invalid because the
voter had voted for everyone, except the incumbent. Another vote was
invalid because the voter voted for somebody who previously contested
an election, but not this one. A number of other votes were declared
invalid because they did not have the correct mark or indeed no mark
at all. I estimated that there were more than 10 during our time
there between 8 PM and 10 PM when we left for the TEC.

By the time we left, we both agreed that with approximately 35% of
the vote counted, Raffi was ahead by at least 3 to 1. We proceeded to
the TEC 26 in Yeghvard and introduced ourselves to the TEC team. The
conditions of the location for tabulation at this location were far
from ideal. It consisted of two rooms separated by a corridor which
meant that I stayed in the room where the chair and deputy chair met
with the PEC teams as they came in with their results. My colleague
Hedda stayed in the other room where a secretary entered the results
from the various protocols.

I was given very little cooperation by the TEC team in that they did
not offer any information to me as to the PEC teams coming in with
their protocols. The lack of space made it particularly difficult
for me to see anything. I had to ask for information, any time I
wanted it. My interpreter and driver indicated to me that the team
were somewhat uneasy about our presence.

When the results came in from number 26/1, I particularly was
interested and asked for the result. This wasn’t forthcoming, but my
interpreter got to see the protocol and indicated that the incumbent
had beaten Raffi by 382 to 302 approximately. I was astonished by
this apparent turnaround since we left the count. I tried to get more
information, to no avail.

However, my interpreter then told me that he noticed on the protocol
that there were zero invalid votes. I was completely taken aback
by this, and I asked my interpreter to let the chair know about
my astonishment.

Between then and when we finally finished the tabulation observation at
approximately 3:30 AM, I was given little or no cooperation. I finally
asked if I could see the final written result and the chair refused. I
met up with my colleague Hedda who had expressed satisfaction with
what she had seen in the other room, in that the results were properly
put onto the computer. I suggested that she might ask the chairman
herself for a copy of the protocol. But again he declined waving his
hands in the air. We asked if they would be publishing the result
and his reply was in the morning. We immediately left. We filled out
the necessary form for the OSCE, having kept in constant contact with
them during the night.

I’ve been practicing politician here in Ireland for 32 years,
contesting and winning every election I personally fought in. I was
director of elections board at national and local level for my party.

I have never witnessed anything like this. From my experience, I
know a trend, when I see one, and something very strange happened to
overturn the result, after we left the count in PEC 26/1.

As I stated to you, I feel that full re-examination of this count
should take place. I could not understand then and still now how
invalid votes can become valid.

If you require any further information please do not hesitate to
contact me.

"Black Sabbath" Guitarist Tony Iommi Does Not Exclude Lonely Planet

“BLACK SABBATH” GUITARIST TONY IOMMI DOES NOT EXCLUDE LONELY PLANET WIN IN “EUROVISION 2013”

11:47, 11 March, 2013

YEREVAN, MARCH 11, ARMENPRESS: Black Sabbath legendary guitarist Tony
Iommi – whose song was selected as Armenia’s Eurovision Song Contest
entry – last night admitted: “I’ve plenty more where that one came
from.” As Armenpress reports citing British Birmingham Mail, Iommi
said he was gobsmacked when the Armenians chose Lonely Planet – a song
he wrote more than five years ago – as their Eurovision contender,
but now he has high hopes for the track. Among other things he noted:
“I was as shocked as anybody when they came knocking. They got in
touch with me because of the charity work we’ve been doing out there,
building a new music school to replace one wrecked by an earthquake.

They asked if I’d got any spare songs.

Well, I write loads of songs and they just get put away. They lie
on a shelf because either they’re not suitable for Sabbath or for
another project, and never see the light of day.

I searched out Lonely Planet – it’s a bit of a power ballad – and
sent it off.

The legendary guitarist posted in his official web site on March 3:
“Well here’s something different, one of my demo ideas has been chosen
as the Armenian entry for the Eurovision Song Contest.” The lyrics
is by Vardan Zadoyan. The song will be introduced in the semi-final
on May 16th in Malmo, Sweden.

Turquie : Des Reformes Pour Mettre Fin Au Harcelement Des Journalist

Detention provisoire illimitee : toujours autant d’abus

L’Ecrivain Disgracie Oblige De Quitter L’Azerbaidjan ?

public concernant son roman.

Nota CVAN : Dans ” Wag the Dog ” (“Remuer le chien”), film americain

David Nahoum passes away -Kolkata India.

Nahoum’s loses its man behind the till

OUR BUREAU

David Nahoum; (top, above) the notice outside the shop announcing his
death on Thursday. Picture by Sanjoy Ghosh The famous fudge and fruit
cake will be back on the shelves after a day but David Nahoum, the
familiar face behind the cash till at the landmark Nahoum & Sons in
New Market, won’t.

David, who was to turn 86 in April, passed away on Thursday morning at
Fortis Hospitals, his last visit to the shop being in a wheelchair
around a month ago.

David had been admitted to Fortis with chronic renal failure on
February 9. He died of cardiac and respiratory failure resulting from
his condition, a hospital official said.

`I got a call from the hospital, saying he was no more. He was a
father figure to all of us at the shop. I had worked with him for
around 34 years and his death is a big shock for me,’ Jagadish Halder,
the manager of Nahoum’s, told Metro.

Nahoum’s kept its shutters down for the day but the sense of loss
wasn’t restricted to the family and those who worked for David.

Nahoum’s loyalist Dona Ganguly said: `May his soul rest in peace. The
cakes are so special! In fact, yesterday we had some Nahoum’s fruit
cake with tea. Sourav and I both love it. Come December, Nahoum’s
cakes are a must in our house.’

Andrea Raberts of the Do-Re-Mi music store opposite Nahoum’s saw the
notice announcing David’s death when she arrived at New Market at
10am.

`He was such a good-hearted man. He always helped the poor,’ said
Andrea. `I called him `Uncle’ and will really miss him a lot. Had
there been no Nahoum’s, there wouldn’t be New Market today,’ added
store owner S. Hafiz.

David’s younger brother, 76-year-old Isaac Nahoum, performed his last
rites at the Jewish cemetery in Narkeldanga in the afternoon.

`Mr Isaac had been at the hospital throughout. Other family members
and members of the staff paid their last respects before the funeral,’
manager Halder said.

Isaac is expected to take charge at the 111-year-old confectionery
that his late brother had been running for many years.

David was not only the face of Nahoum’s but also the leader of
Calcutta’s dwindling Jewish community. He headed all major Jewish
organisations, including two schools, one for boys and the other for
girls, two synagogues and charitable organisations. Without his
hand-written notes, visitors could not enter Magen David Synagogue and
Beth El Synagogue.

The caretakers of the century-old David Magen Synagogue, where David
would conduct Saturday prayers, didn’t know their `Saheb’ had passed
away until afternoon. `Is it so? We don’t have any such information
yet. I last saw Saheb here in September during the festival. I have
known him since I was 12 years old… He was a very good man,’ said
Nrushionha Swaian.

The confectionery business, Nahoum & Sons Private Limited, was started
by David’s grandfather, Nahoum Israel Mordecai, a Baghdadi Jew, in
1902 and the shop shifted to its present location in 1916. Before
that, Nahoum’s used to sell baked goods and cheese door-to-door.

The shop had started small but began expanding along with the
market. Nahoum’s factory, which filmmaker and actor Anjan Dutt calls a
`tourist attraction like Park Street’, is at 1 Hartford Lane behind
New Market in a building owned by the family.

David was born into a large family of many siblings, of whom only two
brothers and a sister have survived. He went to La Martiniere and was
not interested in the shop but took over the reins after the death of
his brother Solomon and then Norman.

David refused to expand, diversify or give his shop a makeover, quite
unlike other such landmarks in the city. Nahoum’s stuck to fish
pantras, cheese samosas and walnut brownies, and continued to flourish
unlike the neighbouring M.X. D’Gama’s.

The wooden cash till and the wooden-framed glass cases for the display
of its goodies, including specialities such as the baklava, almond,
coconut and cheese samosas, date babas, khalla bread and caca rings,
have also survived the ravages of change.

Like his brothers, David was always single and cherished the simple
pleasures of life. He loved the outdoors and in his youth would go
hunting wild boar with his Anglo-Indian friends. But he only ate
kosher food and his cooks accompanied him. He was fond of pets too,
especially dogs.

Nahoum & Sons was established by Nahoum Israel Mordecai

Started off as a small outlet in 1902 in front of Hogg Market (the
flower stretch); moved to F-20, New Market, in 1916

Top treats include its Rich Fruit Cake, chocolate fudge, brownie,
macaroons & jam tarts

Garage Find: Bellport NY Man Finds Arthur Pinajian Artwork Appraised At $30-M

Works by an obscure Armenian-American abstract impressionist
discovered in a Long Island, NY garage have been appraised at $30-M.

Thomas Schultz discovered thousands of paintings, drawings and
journals by Arthur Pinajian after he bought a cottage in Bellport in Y
2007.

`The smallest house in Bellport Village and maybe one of the most
important, most significant art finds in art history is an interesting
paradox,’ Mr. Schultz said. ‘It’s my understanding that if the works
were sold in the retail market it can fetch up to $30-M in retail
prices, but that could take 20, 30 years to do.’

Armenian lobby and Iranian State Propaganda Attack Azerbaijan-Israel

Armenian lobby and Iranian State Propaganda Attack Azerbaijan-Israel
Burgeoning Relations

2013-03-09 By Marketers Media

Armenian lobby groups such as ANCA building on pervasive and
deep-rooted Turcophobia, anti-Azerbaijanism and anti-Semitism, join
forces with mullahs of Iran, attack expanding strategic partnership
between Azerbaijan and Israel.

Iran’s state-run radio published a critical report about Azerbaijan’s
Ambassador to the United States, Elin Suleymanov, speaking at a panel
during the AIPAC 2013 Annual Conference on March 3, 2013.

Official Tehran’s anti-Semitic diatribe attempted to drive wedge
between the Azerbaijani and Jewish people and between Azerbaijan and
Israel. Clearly, the Iranian leadership is concerned over the growing
and successful partnership Azerbaijan has developed with the United
States and Israel.

Azerbaijan, which is home to one of the largest Jewish communities in
the Muslim world, currently provides up to 40% of Israel’s energy
demand and the Ambassador stated more cooperation between Israel and
Azerbaijan would further deepen relations between the two countries.

In a commentary entitled `The land of no anti-Semitism’ about
Azerbaijan the day before the conference the influential Israeli
newspaper Haaretz noted: “There is no anti-Semitism here and there
never has been.’ This sentence was repeated to me over and over during
my stay this week on the shore of the Caspian Sea. Jews, non-Jews,
government officials, dissidents, local residents and Israeli
diplomats and rabbis. Not only was this the constant refrain but I
don’t remember ever being in a country where I felt so comfortable
being identified as an Israeli. And Azerbaijan, in case you were not
aware, is 95 percent Muslim, of the Shi’ite variety.’

The Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) Executive Director
Aram Hamparian joined the Iranian attack on Azerbaijan by harshly
criticizing Azerbaijani Ambassador speaking at the AIPAC annual event
and for expressing support for Israel and the Jewish community.

Ironically, in the best tradition of paranoia-driven conspiracy
theories, both Armenian and Iranian statements are based on a poorly
translated unchecked press-report rather than actual participation in
the event or official statements.

While Armenia’s own close relationship and shady dealings with Tehran,
including Armenian actions to bypass international sanctions on Iran
are well known and documented, the attempts by the American Armenian
lobby groups to demonize Azerbaijan for being Israel’s friend and
attempts to isolate Israel in the region are contrary to advancing the
U.S. national interests in Eurasia. Which is business as usual for
Armenian lobby groups, which care only about their own narrow
interests, and betray U.S. interests and taxpayers.

Over the years, the Armenian government and nationalist circles have
been on the record expressing and fanning anti-Semitic statements.
Beginning in mid-May 2008, pro-government print media and state-run
Public Television have made outlandish anti-Semitic and anti-Masonic
accusations against former president and current opposition leader
Levon Ter-Petrossian (LTP). Most of the accusations appear to be
harsher versions of previous allegations that surfaced right before
and after Armenia’s disputed February presidential election. The
small, pro-government Armenian Jewish community has expressed deep
concern over the attacks, given the fact that anti-Semitic rhetoric
has not been an issue in Armenia before, wrote then US Embassy in
Armenia Charge d’Affaires Joseph Pennington in a US cable dated Jun.
18, 2008.

The Armenian lobby should stop playing an always destructive and
obstructive role, and truly help Armenia by adhering to the United
Nations Security Council resolutions which demand immediate withdrawal
of Armenia’s occupying forces from Azerbaijan’s Nagorno-Karabakh
region and all other currently occupied Azerbaijani districts.
Furthermore, the Armenian lobby should put its pressure on Yerevan
government to stop the destruction of Azerbaijani cultural heritage,
such only two remaining mosques (of 269 existing in 19th century) in
today’s Armenia. Not content with physical destruction, the Armenian
government re-names these mosques as `Persian’ in an effort to
whitewash its policy of cultural genocide against Azerbaijanis, Kurds
and Turks.

ANCA to AIPAC: ditch Azerbaijan

ANCA to AIPAC: ditch Azerbaijan

Published: Saturday March 09, 2013

The Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA), giving voice to the
Armenian American community’s growing alarm over anti-Armenian tirades
by Azerbaijani leaders and diplomats, officially registered a protest
today with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC)
regarding remarks made by Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to the United States
Elin Suleymanov, at the organization’s recently concluded annual
conference.

According to news reports, Azerbaijani Ambassador Suleymanov, during a
breakout session at the AIPAC Policy conference titled “New Allies:
Israel and the Caucasus Region,” threatened supporters of Israel not
to “fall under the influence of pro-Armenian lobby groups.”

In the March 7th ANCA letter, Executive Director Aram Hamparian
explained that: “Strengthening the relationship between the United
States and Israel need not involve support for dictatorial regimes.
Nor should supporting Israel require providing a platform for those,
like Ambassador Suleymanov, who engage in the very sort of hateful,
conspiratorial rants that have, for far too long, been used to
demonize Israel and her supporters worldwide.”

Hamparian specifically asked AIPAC to “reevaluate the moral and
practical dimensions of your organization’s association with
Azerbaijan’s war-mongering President, Ilham Aliyev, a dictator who,
echoing the venomous Holocaust-era rants of Adolf Hitler against Jews,
has announced openly that, “all the Armenians of the world” are his
enemies.” He added that Aliyev, by saying that “Armenia as a country
is of no value… it is actually a colony, an outpost run from abroad,
a territory artificially created on ancient Azerbaijani lands,” was
“attacking Armenia’s very right to exist in language chillingly
similar to those who seek to destroy Israel.”
