Paul Ignatius

WASHINGTON – The Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus announced last month
that the next Arleigh Burke-class destroyers (DDG) will be named USS
Paul Ignatius and USS Daniel Inouye.

`As secretary of the Navy it is my privilege to name these ships to
honor a respected naval leader and a true American hero.’ Mabus said.
`For decades to come, the future USS Paul Ignatius and USS Daniel
Inouye will represent the United States and enable the building of
partnerships and projection of power around the world.’

The future USS Paul Ignatius (DDG 117) honors Paul Ignatius who served
as secretary of the Navy 1967-1969 and as assistant secretary of
defense under President Lyndon Johnson. The future USS Daniel Inouye
(DDG 118) is named to honor former Sen. Daniel Inouye, D-Hawaii.
Inouye was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in Tuscany,
Italy, during World War II and later became a U.S. senator. USS Paul
Ignatius and USS Daniel Inouye will be the first naval ships to bear
these names.

Arleigh Burke-class destroyers conduct a variety of operations from
peacetime presence and crisis management to sea control and power
projection. They are capable of fighting air, surface and subsurface
battles simultaneously and contain a myriad of offensive and defensive
weapons designed to support maritime warfare.

European experts: EU must intensify in Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement

7 June 2013, 19:39 (GMT+05:00)

Azerbaijan, Baku, June 7 / Trend, I. Izzet /

The European Union pays more attention to the Transnistrian conflict,
than the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, expert from the European Policy
Centre Amanda Paul said at the panel “The Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict: A
Call to the EU” within the “EU-Azerbaijan: security and integration”
conference today.

She said that the EU must pay more attention to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

“Why does the EU pay more attention to the Transnistrian conflict? she
asked. “The reason is that this conflict is on the EU’s borders and
several countries are looking to settle it. Moreover, the
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is a threat to the whole region and the
countries beyond it, as well as to energy and transport corridors. As
opposed to previous years, today, there is no progress in the
conflict’s settlement. The EU sees itself in the conflict settlement
as a supporting force, rather than a major player.”
Latvian Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,
Viktors Makarovs stressed that the EU can do much work in the
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement, because the organization has
considerable potential for this.

“The EU must intensify its activity in the South Caucasus,” he said.
“Its presence in the region must be expanded. The EU has a lot of
experience and potential. Though it can not assume a leading role in
the conflict’s settlement, the main issue is a shift in the conflict
settlement. The Madrid principles must be taken into account. The
requirements of international law must be used as a basis.”

As a friend of Azerbaijan, Latvia wants to expand its relations with
the EU and supports the integration of Azerbaijan into the
organization, Makarovs said.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988
when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian
armed forces have occupied 20 per cent of Azerbaijan since 1992,
including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The
co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group – Russia, France and the U.S. – are
currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council’s four
resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the
surrounding regions.

KERRY, NALBANDIAN HOLD JOINT PRESS CONFERENCE

US Secretary of State John Kerry met Armenian Foreign Minister Edward
Nalbandian in Washington.

John Kerry said at the joint press briefing ahead of their meeting
that “One of the issues, obviously, that we all really want to try to
see resolved one day is the frozen conflict of Upper-Karabakh.”

Kerry added that “It is critical that all the parties, I mean the
Azerbaijanis, but also Turkey, Russia, Iran, others, try to find a way
to help break the impasse that has kept this struggle alive and always
potentially dangerous.”

Edward Nalbandian for his part said “Both countries have a good
interaction in the international arena and are sharing the same
vision, that it is important to continue efforts to find exclusively
peaceful solution to the Upper-Karabakh conflict peacefully, and that
the relations between Armenia and Turkey should be normalized without
preconditions.”

Sharmazanov: In Azerbaijan, freedom of press is utopia, while in
Armenia it is reality

17:02 07/06/2013 » POLITICS

Commenting on the recent remarks by Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan,
the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry spokesman has said that the chasm
between the development of Azerbaijan and Armenia is huge.

Deputy Speaker of Armenian National Assembly Eduard Sharmazanov has
responded to the Azerbaijani official’s comment.

`Certainly, the chasm between the development of Azerbaijan and
Armenia is becoming deeper because Azerbaijan officially encourages
racism and xenophobia, while Armenia encourages tolerance. The
Azerbaijani authorities officially advocate war, while Armenia
advocates peace. In Azerbaijan, freedom of press is utopia, while in
Armenia it is a reality. Azerbaijan swiftly moves towards
dictatorship, with cult of personality playing pivotal role, while
political pluralism develops in Armenia.

Obviously, with such kind of `development,’ Azerbaijan’s fiasco is
inevitable,’ said the Deputy Speaker.
